A multi-period mean-variance formulation of tracking error for portfolio selection.

Yeison Andres Zabala 24 February 2016 (has links)
In this work, an optimal policy for portfolio selection based on mean-varian e analysis for the multi-period tracking error - ERM - was derived. ERM is understood as the difference between the capital raised by the selected portfolio and benchmark portfolio. Thus, the methodology discussed by Li-Ng in [24] for analytical solution was applied, generalizing the single period case introduced by Roll in [38]. Then, it was selected a portfolio from the Brazilian stock trading based on the correlation factor, and adopted as benchmark the index of the stock trading of São Paulo State IBOVESPA, and the basic interest rate SELIC as fixed income asset. Two cases were dealt: portfolio composed of risky assets only, case I, and portfolio with a risk-free asset - indexed to SELIC - and assets of the case I (case II).

Constructing low cost core-satellite portfolios with multiple risk constraints: practical applications to Robo advising in South Africa using active, passive and smart-beta strategies

Smith, Jacques 24 February 2021 (has links)
Risk and tracking error budgeting was originally adopted by large institutional investors, including pension funds, plan sponsors, foundations, and endowments. More recently, risk and tracking error budgeting have gained popularity among financial advisors, multi-managers, fund of funds managers, high net worth individuals as well as retail investors. These techniques contribute to the portfolio optimisation process by limiting the extent to which a portfolio can deviate from its benchmark with regards to risk and tracking error. This is an ambitious paper that attempts to determine the optimal strategy to practically implement risk and tracking error budgeting as a portfolio optimisation technique in South Africa. This study attempts to bridge the gap between active, passive, and smart-beta investment management styles by introducing a low-cost portfolio construction technique, for core-satellite portfolio management, which contributes to the risk and tracking error budgeting process. Core-satellite portfolios are designed to expose the portfolio to a low-cost primary “core” consisting of passive and enhanced index funds, thus systematic risk “beta”, limiting the tracking error of the portfolio. The secondary “satellite” component is allocated to active and smart-beta managers to exploit expected excess return “alpha”. The primary aim of this research is to construct a rule-based product range of core-satellite portfolios called “replica portfolios”. The product range builds on the foundation of the Association for Savings & Investments South Africa (ASISA) framework. The study identifies three “target portfolios” from ASISA's framework, namely (1) High Risk: SA General Equity, (2) Medium Risk: SA Multi-Asset High Equity and (3) Low Risk: SA Multi-Asset Low Equity. Through this framework, active managers from each category are shortlisted using a Sharpe and Information Ratio filter. A secondary filtering technique, namely Returns Based Style Analysis (RBSA) is used to determine the style, R-squared and alpha-generating ability of active managers versus the passive asset classes and style indices they seek to replicate. Applying Euler's theorem for homogenous functions, we decompose the risk of the coresatellite portfolio into the risk contributed by each of its components. The primary mandate of the core-satellite portfolios in the product range is to allocate risk and tracking error efficiently across several investment management styles and asset classes in order to maximise returns while remaining within the specified risk parameters. iii The results highlighted that active managers, after fees, predominantly failed to outperform their benchmarks and passive building blocks, as identified through RBSA over the sample period (October 2009 – September 2019). However, only a small number of active managers generated superior risk-adjusted returns and were included in the core-satellite range of products. This study recommends to investors that they exploit the “hot-hands effect” by investing in specialised, benchmark agnostic active managers who consistently produce superior risk-adjusted returns. By blending active, passive and smart-beta strategies, investors are exposed to less total risk, less risk per holding and a lower tracking error. The three coresatellite portfolios developed in this study generated absolute and risk-adjusted returns that are more significant than their active and passive counterparts. Fee arbitrage was derived through the range of core-satellite products, resulting in tangible alpha over the sample period. The study encourages investors to use smart-beta strategies alongside active and passive funds since it improves Sharpe and Information ratios while enhancing the original portfolio's characteristics.

Modelling management fees of mutual funds using multiple linearregression / Modellering av fonders förvaltningsavgift genom multilinjär regression

Hallberg, David, Renström, Erik January 2017 (has links)
This paper seeks to investigate whether management fees, set by mutual funds, rely on a set of explanatory variables. The study includes equity, bond, and money market funds, all investing in securities registered in Sweden. Results obtained from the project show that changes in assets under management, standard deviation, and tracking error, for a course of 5 years, can provide some explanation to what management fees mutual funds set. In turn, this raises many interesting questions on how capital flows and fund differentiation affects the fees. Also, a market analysis of the Swedish fund market shows that elements of monopolistic competition are present. Finally, because of the scope of this study, several suggestions on further research have been made.

Logistics Regression Model on Antenna Control Unit Autotracking Mode

Laird, Daniel T. 10 1900 (has links)
ITC/USA 2015 Conference Proceedings / The Fifty-First Annual International Telemetering Conference and Technical Exhibition / October 26-29, 2015 / Bally's Hotel & Convention Center, Las Vegas, NV / Over the past several years DoD imposed constraints on test deliverables, requiring objective measures of test results, i.e., statistically defensible test and evaluation (SDT&E) methods and results. These constraints force testers to employ statistical hypotheses, analyses and modeling to assess test results objectively, i.e., based on statistical metrics, analytical methods, probability of confidence complemented by, rather than solely on expertise, which is too subjective. In this and companion papers we discuss methods of objectifying testing. We employ an earth coordinate model and statistical modeling of telemetry (TM) tracking antenna employing time-space position information (TSPI) and derived statistical measures for tracking-error and auto-tracking mode. Test data were statistically analyzed via analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) which revealed that the antenna control unit (ACU) under test (AUT) does not track statistically identically, nor as practically or efficiently in C-band while receiving data carriers in both S- and C-bands. The conclusions of this paper add support to that hypothesis. In this third of three papers we use data from a range test, but make no reference to the systems under test as the purpose of this paper is to present an example of tools useful for employing a SDT&E methodology.

Evaluating the Performance of Leveraged and Inverse Exchange-Traded Funds in Taiwanese Stock Market

Unknown Date (has links)
Using Leveraged and Inverse Exchange-Traded Funds (LETF) listed in the Taiwan Stock Exchange, this thesis evaluates the performance of these LETFs based on the methodology proposed by Charupat and Miu (2014). The traditional approach of performance evaluation of ETFs is to regress the fund’s net asset value (NAV) returns on the underlying index’s returns. However, such an approach fails to account for important factors, such as compounding and financing effects, that affect the NAV of the LETFs, and unavoidably leads to serious estimation biases. This is the first thesis which evaluates the performance of LETFs listed in the Taiwan Stock Exchange. By considering compounded effect and financing effect in the regression model, the proposed method is more precise and appropriate in disentangling factors that affect the performance of the LETFs. Our empirical evidence shows how compounding effect, financing costs, and management factors influence LETFs’ tracking errors. Most of all, the three LETFs tracking the SSE180 index have the best tracking ability of the underlying asset return, while the LETFs tracking the FTSE TWSE Taiwan 50 index have the best management performance among all LETFs examined in this these.

Unknown Date (has links)

Ethical Index : What is the price of a good conscience?

Tuvinger, Patrik, Sobka, Tomas January 2016 (has links)
Aim:The purpose of this study is to investigate whether an investor will have to s acrifice their expectations of return by investing in a responsible way. Theory: The thesis is based on the efficient market hypothesis through the modern portfolio theory to make it possible to test whether the investor will have to sacrifice return after taking into account of the risk. To measure the risk-adjusted return we used Sharpe ratio, the Modigliani-Modigliani (M2), Jensen's alpha, which later on is the basis for the study's results and conclusion. Method: The study is a quantitative survey with a deductive approach where the selected theories determined what data is collected. Based on these theories we construct a hypothesis that this study later intended to test. Data was collected from Bloomberg. Conclusion: The study shows that several ethical indexes have a higher return while at the same time showing a higher risk-adjusted return. This higher risk-adjusted return is not statistically significant except for a few of the measured markets. The study also shows that the ethical indexes generally have a lower 𝛽, which can be interpreted as a lower systematic risk. Meanwhile the tracking error / active risk is higher and the screened indexes therefore should not be compared with say, index funds. When taken into account the longer period active risk levels match actively managed funds. As in previous studies, this study did not show any significant difference in risk-adjusted returns but a higher risk.

Optimal Portfolio Re-Balancing on Fixed Periods using a Cost/Risk Adaptation Model and Stochastic Optimization.

Ehn, Max, Jämte, Marcus January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis we investigate the problem of portfolio re-balancing for fixed periods using a cost/risk adaptation model and stochastic optimization. The cost/risk adaptation model takes theory of optimal liquidity costs and risk preference to build a universe in which we try to find better strategies than conventional ones. The results are focused on the comparison between the conventional execution strategies versus our developed model. We have found that our model outperforms the conventional methods for all assets that has been evaluated, and especially for investors whom value exposure to the markets higher.

FEES IN SUSTAINABLE MUTUAL FUNDS : The relationship between the return on sustainable mutual funds and the total expense ratio in the U.S. and Sweden

Cheraghi, Jonas, Sundqvist, Adam January 2022 (has links)
This thesis investigates the relationship between the total expense ratio and the 5-year performance to last month for sustainable mutual funds registered in Sweden and the United States. The increasing amount of mutual funds and the shift towards sustainability in the society gives cause to study the relationship between the total expense ratio and the performance of sustainable mutual funds rather than conventional mutual funds. The analysis was conducted by testing the relationships through different regression models for both the Swedish and the U.S. market. A simple regression model was conducted for both markets to study the relation that the total expense ratio has to the 5-year performance to last month. To further analyse the relation between the two variables, a multiple regression model was conducted for both markets to further analyse the significant relationship between the total expense ratio and the 5-year performance to last month. The data was collected via Eikon and included mutual funds registered in Sweden and the U.S., each mutual fund collected was retrieved together with an ESG score which was the definitive factor whether the mutual fund could be considered as sustainable or not. The results gathered from the simple regression model for the Swedish market was found to have no significant relationship and the explanatory degree for the regression model was very low. The results regarding the simple regression model for the U.S. market are however found to be significant but with a low degree of explanation as well. Hence the result from this study indicates that there is no significant relationship between the total expense ratio and the 5-year performance to last month for the Swedish market when conducting a simple regression model, while the U.S. market has a low significant relationship between the variables. However, a multiple regression model for the Swedish market containing additional control variables presents a significant relationship between the total expense ratio and the 5-year performance to last month. The same results were found for the U.S. market when conducting a multiple regression model. The results for the Swedish simple regression model align with previous studies conducted within this area, where previous studies have found there to be no significant relationship between the total expense ratio and the performance of mutual funds, hence same results are applicable to sustainable mutual funds. However, this study did in fact also display significant relationships for the multiple regression model for the Swedish market as well as for both regression models for the U.S. market. Which indicates that the total expense ratio to some extents have an explanatory relationship between the total expense ratio and the 5-year performance to last month for sustainable mutual funds in both the Swedish market and the U.S. market.

The analysis of Market Risk VaR management :the case of financial holding company

Chou, Jacky Unknown Date (has links)
