Moving from Theory to Practice: Integrating Mobile Devices in Elementary Reading Instruction

Technology integration continues to be a professional development concern, especially in elementary schools. It remains unclear why there is a difference between how teachers talk about using technology and how they apply it in teaching reading. The purpose of this study was to explore professional development options that would help teachers connect theory to practice by studying their decision-making process. The conceptual framework was based on elements of the knowing-doing gap and reflective practices. The research questions explored (a) the decision-making process, (b) reflective practices used during decision-making, (c) professional development that facilitates closing the knowing-doing gap, and (d) recommendations from participants to improve upon professional development. In a case study design, 10 K-4 teachers participated in one 60-minute interview, one follow-up interview, and one 45-minute focus group. With the use of typological analysis, transcripts were coded for initial and emerging themes. Results indicated that integrating mobile devices was highly dependent upon teachers being self-directed learners. Teachers relied on informal collegial interactions when deciding to use mobile devices. Continuous professional development that addresses adult learning styles was recommended by the teachers to support technology adoption. Improvements to reading instruction lead to positive social change by increasing student achievement, thereby preparing students to be world citizens in a competitive global market.

近年來,許多企業希望透過不同領域的專家彼此合作,為組織解決日益複雜的難題。然而,跨專業團隊的合作過程充滿挑戰,過去文獻多專注於如何提升知識分享的效果,卻忽略了許多關鍵新知識必須由跨界團隊合作探索而來。在面對陌生情境下,這樣的探索尤其重要,例如:開發新產品、啟用新製程,但我們至今仍對跨專業社群如何合作探索的過程所知甚少。 為了探究這個議題,本研究採用民族誌的方式,追蹤半導體晶圓廠工程師如何在複雜的生產系統中解決跨專業的維修難題。過程中,工作者常常必須面臨因果錯綜複雜、責任歸屬不清、跨界溝通不良所導致的合作困境。研究發現要解決這樣的困境,工作者必須運用疆界物件引發三種工作實務:解讀現象背後的因果、改變合作關係、整合跨界知識,才能找出問題核心並對症下藥。 根據本研究發現,如果我們能了解工作者在特定情境中的學習過程,便可提升既有的知識管理與疆界物件理論。在實務議題上,本研究的發現也能幫助現有員工培訓與跨專業溝通方式。 / Recently, more and more companies are gathering different types of specialist in order to solve increasingly complex problems. But the efforts paid in the process of cooperation are challenging for enterprises. Previous researchers had focused on the transfer and share of cross-disciplinary knowledge. However, they neglected the fact that some critical knowledge must be learned by collaborative exploring in terms of particular situation. To understand this issue, an ethnography study was used to examine the process of trouble shooting undertaken by engineers who encountered complex problems in the fabrication of semiconductor wafers. This thesis addressed three primary challenges faced by engineers. First, the nature of the problem may not be defined appropriately at the beginning. Second, responsibility may not be clearly attributed by cross specialist team who is in charge of investigation. Third, without comprehensive contexts of the practice, communication between engineers is problematic itself. To overcome the problem, engineers must be able to go beyond standard operating procedures so that they can find a new path of solution. This thesis argues that the use of boundary objects is an effective trigger of problem solving. The use of a boundary object is then described as a means of decoding the contexts behind the objects, reforming the relationship of cooperation, and integrating knowledge systemically. These findings suggest that theories of knowledge management and boundary objects could be improved organically by considering what people do and how people learn in practice. Furthermore, these findings bring us practical implications of employee training and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

”DET BLIR MER KOPPLAT TILL VERKLIGHETEN” : Drama som pedagogiskt verktyg

Syftet med detta examensarbete var att undersöka användandet av drama som pedagogiskt verktyg i gymnasieskolans undervisning och elevers attityder till det. För att ta reda på detta användes en enkätundersökning bestående av kvalitativa och kvantitativa frågor på en gymnasieskola i Mellansverige. Resultatet från undersökningen visar att drama som pedagogiskt verktyg upplevs ha flera olika effekter för eleverna, både pedagogiskt som individuellt. Slutsatsen är således att drama inte bara är ett verktyg förbehållet läraren för att skapa en lustfylld undervisning utan drama är också ett betydelsefullt redskap som elever kan använda för sin sociala och emotionella utveckling.

Multimedial instruktionsmetodik : en fallstudie kring multimedia i undervisningen

Multimedia är ett hett omdebatterat ämne både i och utanför skolan. Vad är det bra för och hur kan man använda det i undervisningen? Den frågan kan man finna svaret på i detta arbete genom att läsa detta arbete.Vi ger bakgrundsmaterial i form av en kvantitativ attitydundersökning kring lärare och IT.Syftet med detta arbete är att bidra till skolutveckling genom att lyfta fram didaktiska metoder inom multimedial instruktionsmetodik. Vidare kommer vi att försöka få ett svar på hur de förhåller sig till att använda sig av multimediala hjälpmedel i sin undervisning.Undersökningens metod har varit kvalitativa intervjuer med 11 informanter. Dessa kommer både från högskola och gymnasieskola. Informanterna kommer från olika pedagogiska yrken så som högskoleadjunkt, yrkeslärare, lektor och kärnämneslärare.I våra teoretiska utgångspunkter klargörs diskursen för detta examensarbete. Under inlärning beskrivs olika utvecklingspsykologiska teorier. Där beskrivs bland annat multimedia principen och lärstilar .Ur resultatet framkommer att användning av multimedia ser olika ut och att instruktionsanvändandet stämmer överens med våra teoretiska utgångspunkter.Vidare diskuteras mer generella aspekter av multimedial inlärning samt hur undervisning kan organiseras och genomföras med olika presentationshjälpmedel. Genom att använda multimedia i undervisningen får man variation, som gynnar helhetsbilden kring olika lärstilar.Multimedial instruktionsmetodik handlar om hur och varför man kan och bör använda multimediala hjälpmedel för att förbättra undervisningen. Vi belyser teorier som understödjer ett multimedialt användande inom undervisning. Vår fallstudie undersöker lärares användning och ger lärande exempel på multimedial instruktionsmetodik. Under diskussionen framkommer fler intressanta lärande exempel. Här finns också hänvisningar till tänkbara multimediala inspirationskällor. En sammanställning för fortsatt forskning inom området finns att tillgå i form av en bilaga.Slutligen ges förslag till framtida forskning inom området för detta examensarbete.

經商環境對已開發國家銀行跨國併購新興國家銀行之績效影響 / The affect of the ease of doing business to the developed country mergers the EME

隨著新興國家金融管制的鬆綁,國際間銀行業併購的標的已逐漸由美國、歐洲等已開發國家延伸至拉丁美洲、東南亞等新興國家。本論文以事件研究法對2005年到2014年,已開發國家銀行跨國併購新興國家金融產業的併購活動,共49個樣本進行分析,藉由迴歸分析的結果去觀察目標國家的經商環境對於併購績效的影響。 本研究的立論在於,過去文獻表示銀行跨國併購的主要動機之一為追隨客戶,而如今許多銀行的客戶為了降低勞動成本,紛紛前往新興國家設廠,而新興國家相較於已開發國家的其中一個特點為,其經商環境尚未發展健全,不如已開發國家穩定,故目標國的經商環境好壞很可能是影響主併銀行客戶決定是否進入或擴大投資的因素,進而成為影響主併銀行跨國併購的成敗因素之一。 而本論文的結果可分為三個層級。第一層是各別經商環境指標對主併銀行宣告效果的影響;第二層逐漸收斂為企業創立、企業擴建與企業經營三組指標對主併銀行宣告效果的影響;第三層則收斂為綜合性經商環境指標對主併銀行宣告效果的影響。在第一層級中發現:目標國家開辦企業程序的便利簡潔度、取得信貸的流程明確度與能否有效執行合約等排名,在事件窗口(-1,+1)呈現顯著負相關,亦即此三項經商環境指標排名越高(數字越小)對主併銀行的宣告效果有正面影響。在第二層級中則觀察到企業擴建層面的指標對主併銀行宣告效果的解釋力是最大的、其次是企業創立,最後為企業經營。在第三層面中發現收斂後的綜合經商環境指標確實對銀行的宣告效果1%的顯著水準,亦即當主併銀行選擇經商環境較佳的目標國家進行跨國併購時,市場的反應會較為正面。 / Prompted by financial liberalization and the expansion into emerging market economies (EME) by corporate customers, international banks increasingly penetrated EME. This research uses 49 cross-border M&A samples between 2005 and 2014 in which the acquiring banks is in developed countries and the targets is the financial industry of emerging countries. Using event study methods, the study establish whether the business environment of target countries explain returns to shareholders in acquiring banks from cross-border M&A. From the past study, we observe that one of the main motivations for the banks to cross-border M&A is following customers to new markets. Recently, in order to reduce labor costs, the customers of bank have more FDI in emerging countries. However, the feature of emerging countries is that the business environment is not as stable and clear as the developed countries. Therefore, the business environment will affect the customers of banks decide whether to enter or expand investment in EME and further affect the acquiring banks. The results of this research can be divided into three levels. (1) in the individual business environment indicators level, the study find when the target countries are easier starting a business, getting credit or enforcing contracts, the CAR of acquiring banks will significant negative in event window (-1, +1); (2) in the group of business environment indicators level, the study observe the explanatory power of the business expansion group is larger than the group of start-up and operations; (3) the composite business environment indicator have significant negative affect to the CAR of acquiring banks.

Three essays on the sectoral aspects of economic policy / Trois essais sur les aspects sectoriels de la politique économique

L’objectif sous-jacent aux trois chapitres qui composent cette thèse, est une meilleure compréhension de l’incidence des politiques publiques dont les impacts diffèrent entre secteurs hétérogènes. Nous déclinons cette analyse à trois types de politiques publiques au cœur de la macro-économie contemporaine : (i) une politique environnementale (ii) une politique d’aide au développement et (iii) une politique de déficits jumeaux. A travers ces trois chapitres, nous soutenons que les impacts sectoriels des politiques jouent un rôle crucial dans l’évaluation des politiques et dans la détermination de la politique optimale. Le premier chapitre se concentre sur la taxe sur la pollution. Il fournit un modèle théorique qui explique pourquoi il existe une relation négative entre le revenu des ménages et leur soutien pour la taxe sur la pollution. Dans le deuxième chapitre, j’étudie les impacts macroéconomiques d’une politique d’aide au développement et je considère deux secteurs: secteur des biens échangeables (T-secteur) et le secteur des biens non-échangeables (N-secteur). Je considère deux types d’aide étrangère: (i) une aide distribuée par des transferts forfaitaires aux ménages et (ii) une aide destinée à financer les investissements publics. J'étudie l'impact de la libéralisation du marché des capitaux sur la forme optimale et la performance de l'aide au développement. Le troisième chapitre est centré sur les déficits jumeaux : un déficit de la balance courante induit par un déficit de l'équilibre budgétaire. L'analyse économétrique du papier montre que les pays ayant adopté une négociation salariée centralisée présentent des déficits jumeaux plus faibles que les autres. Ce chapitre fournit aussi un modèle théorique pour expliquer ces résultats empiriques. / In this dissertation, I study the implications of policies with heterogeneous sectoral impacts in three separate research fields of macroeconomics: (i) environmental policy, (ii) foreign aid and (iii) the political economy of the twin deficits. Through the three chapters of this thesis, it is argued that, in all these three contexts, the sectoral impacts of policies play important roles in the policy evaluation and in the determination of optimal policy. In the first chapter, the policy of concern is the pollution tax. The paper provides a theoretical model to explain why in top income percentiles, there can be a negative relationship between household's income and their support for pollution tax. In the second chapter, I study the macroeconomic impacts of foreign aid and I consider two sectors: tradable sector (T-sector) and non-tradable sector (N-sector). I consider two forms of foreign aid: (i) aid which is transferred to the households and (ii) aid which is used to finance public investment. I investigate the impact of the liberalization of capital market on the optimal form and on the performance of foreign aid. In the third chapter, I consider the same sectors as in the second chapter : T-sector and N-sector. The focus of this chapter is rather on the political economy of the twin deficits: a deficit in current account induced by a deficit in fiscal balance. Econometric analysis of the paper finds evidence that wage centralization, in a cross-section of industrialized economies, is significantly associated with lower deficits in current account and budget balance. The paper provides a political economy framework to explain this empirical finding.

The vindication of Christ : a critique of Gustavo Guitierrez, James Cone and Jurgen Moltmann

The problem of universal oppression has caused Gutierrez, Cone and Moltmann to advocate that God is orchestrating an historical programme of liberation from socio-economic, racial and political suffering. They feel that God's liberating actions can be seen in the Abrahamic promise, the exodus and the Christ-event. Moltmann, especially, has emphasized both the trinitarian identification with human pain and the influence of the freedom of the future upon the suffering of the present. According to our theologians, Jesus Christ identified with us, and died the death of a substitutionary victim. Through the resurrection, Jesus Christ overcame the problem of suffering and death, and inaugurated the New Age. The cross and resurrection were the focal point of God's liberating activity. Liberation, or freedom, from sin and suffering is now possible, at least proleptically. We are to understand the atonement as having been liberative rather than forensic or legal, although judgement is not ignored. Both the perpetrators of injustice and their victims are called upon to identify with, and struggle for, freedom, with the help of the liberating Christ. We agree with our theologians that God has historically indicated his desire for justice and freedom. The magnitude of evil and suffering still existing, however, forces us to abandon the idea that God is progressively liberating history. Nevertheless, we affirm the idea that the Trinity has absorbed human suffering into its own story through the incarnate Son. Jesus identified with suffering in a four-fold way, namely: its existence, the judgement of it, the overcoming of it, and the need to oppose it. This comprehensive identification gives Christ the right to demand the doing of justice, because the greatest injustice in history has happened to him. The atonement was forensic, rendering all people accountable to Christ; but it was also liberative, validating the struggle against oppression. Furthermore, at his second coming, Christ will be vindicated in whatever judgement he will exact upon the perpetrators of injustice or oppression. Role aktivní politiky zaměstnanosti při podpoře začínajících podnikatelů / The role of the active politics of employment in the course of the support of beginning entrepreneurs

The unemployment is an important economic as well as social problem which has a negative influence on not only the unemployed and their family but also our society. The society is trying to face up to the unemployment through a lot of ways. Measures of the active politics of employment are one of the possibilities of an increase in the employment rate. One of the tools of the active politics of employment is a contribution toward the creation of a socially efficient self-employment job. The purpose of this thesis was to conduct a survey of problems of the tools of the active politics of employment related to a support of beginning entrepreneurs. The first partial aim was to analyse the beginning entrepreneurs supported by these tools in South Bohemia. The second partial aim was to get a feedback from the beginning entrepreneurs supported by these tools of the active politics of employment in the Pisek District in the years 2007 through 2011 about how this support from the Employment Office helped them at the start of a business. The research part first included a secondary analysis of data related to the provision of the contribution toward the creation of the socially efficient self-employment job in South Bohemia. Then the data from the respondents who had received the given contribution were gathered through the qualitative research. The research included 11 participants who concluded a contract concerning the support given to the beginning entrepreneurs in the Pisek District after 2007. The findings result in the fact that some unemployed people can assert themselves at the market only if they start a business. All respondents agreed that this contribution had helped them at the start of their business even though the amount had not been large enough for many of them. The findings of the thesis bring information on the contribution toward the creation of the socially efficient self-employment job and the analysis of the information within South Bohemia. The findings can become a base for other researches related to the tools of the active politics of employment and they can also be used as a feedback for the Employment Office of the Czech Republic.

"Min pil tränger djupt in i hans hals" : En systemisk-funktionell grammatisk analys ur ett genusperspektiv av Suzanne Collins ungdomsroman Hungerspelen (2012)

Syftet med undersökningen är att studera hur grammatiska konstruktioner av Katniss, Gale, Prim, Cinna, Rue, Peeta, och Haymitch i Suzanne Collins ungdomsroman Hungerspelen (2012) kan bidra till karaktärernas görande av manligt eller kvinnligt genus. Frågeställningen som ska besvaras är på vilket sätt framställs Katniss och de sex andra utvalda karaktärerna grammatiskt utifrån den systemisk-funktionella grammatikens transitivitetssystem processer och deltagare? Och på vilket sätt kan framställningen tolkas ur ett genusperspektiv? Genom att analysera sex utvalda delar ur boken med systemisk-funktionell grammatiks transitivitetssystem och se till processer och deltagare gjordes en grammatisk analys. Analysen tolkades sedan utifrån ett genusperspektiv gällande vilka föreställningar det finns kring manligt och kvinnligt beteende. Resultaten visar att de grammatiska konstruktionerna av Katniss och Peeta kan tolkas som görande av både manligt och kvinnligt genus, Gales och Haymitchs konstruktioner som görande av manligt genus och Cinnas, Rues och Prims grammatiska realiserande som görande av kvinnligt genus. Tillsammans visar resultaten på att karaktärernas grammatiska konstruktioner bidrar till görandet av manligt eller kvinnligt genus som inte behöver avspegla deras ”naturliga kön”. / The aim of this thesis is to study how grammatical constructions of the characters Katniss, Gale, Prim, Cinna, Rue, Peeta and Haytmich, from Suzanne Collins The Hunger Games (2012), contribute to their doing of gender. The thesis set to explore this using two research questions: How is Katniss and the six other characters presented grammatically and accordingly to systemic functional grammars transitivity system’s processes and participants? And, how can the grammatical analysis be interpreted from a gender perspective? By analysing six selected excerpts from the book with systemic functional grammars transitivity system’s processes and participants a grammatical analysis was done. The grammatical analysis was then interpreted from a gender perspective regarding the conceptions of what is considered as a doing of male or female gender behaviour. The result show that the grammatical constructions of Katniss and Peeta can be understood as a doing of both male and female gender. Futhermore, Gale’s and Haymitch’s constructions can be understood as a doing of male gender and Cinna’s, Rue’s and Prim’s constructions as a doing of female gender. Together these results show that the grammatical constructions in The Hunger Games (2012) affect the characters’ doing of gender and that their doing of gender does not have to reflect their sex.

A escola do urbano no campo do município de Catalão/GO : ensino de geografia nas especificidades do lugar

Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa de Minas Gerais / O estudo analisa o ensino de Geografia na Comunidade Morro Agudo (Cisterna) no município de Catalão/GO, onde se localiza a Escola Municipal Maria Bárbara Sucena. O educandário é resultado da nucleação nos anos de 1990, de várias escolas isoladas que funcionavam nas comunidades rurais da região. Após a nucleação, essas escolas foram reunidas em uma sede, com isso muitos alunos passaram a se deslocar por longas distâncias para lá estudar. A Comunidade Morro Agudo (Cisterna) se destaca na produção de alho; os anos de 1990 foram o auge e o declínio dessa cultura na região. Formada por pequenas propriedades, principalmente habitadas por descendentes de portugueses, conta também com a Vila Sucena, onde moram trabalhadores migrantes nordestinos que trabalham nas propriedades rurais do entorno da escola, singularizando o lugar e proporcionando especificidades às relações sociais e ao sentido de escola rural. A diversidade sócio-cultural do lugar chega à escola gerando tensões de várias ordens. No processo ensino-aprendizagem, a escola lida com as diversidades e, entre leis e diretrizes, realiza um ensino de Geografia que nem sempre é capaz de valorizar o conhecimento acumulado no lugar. Na análise desses desencontros é que surgiram os apontamentos metodológicos para um ensino de Geografia na escola do campo. O estudo também considera os “resíduos”, aquilo que não se reduz ao programado, o que não é cooptado. No lugar, são analisadas as políticas públicas implementadas pelo Estado para as escolas do campo no Brasil. Analisa-se como as políticas para o ensino no campo chegam até as escolas, como os diversos programas se efetivam e também o papel do livro didático. Problematiza-se esses mecanismos, principalmente se atendem à realidade e às necessidades do lugar; valoriza-se as representações sociais trazidas por professores e alunos a partir de suas vivências, saberes e fazeres cotidianos. / This study makes an approach to the Morro Agudo Community (Cisterna) located in Catalão city(GO) rural area where stands the Maria Bárbara Sucena Municipal School. This school center is a result of getting together several small and isolated schools, which worked, scattered in many rural communities in the region. After this centralization in a single school, many students had to move along inconvenient distance to get their classes. Morro Agudo Community (Cisterna) was outstanding at garlic cultivation throughout the 1990`s when eventually this activity came to a decline. The region is constituted by properties of small tract of land. The landowners come from a Portuguese background and there are, in addit ion, migrant workers from the northeast region of Brazil. These northeasterners work for these local landowners, and that brings an additional meaning to the social relations in the region and to the rural schooling. The social and cultural diversity of the region has a feedback at the school arising tensions in many ways. In the teaching and learning process the school deals with this diversity, combined with rules and goals that, in the end, delivers a geography teaching not able to value the local knowledge accumulated in the region by its own inhabitants. New methodological approaches to rural school communities emerged out of the analysis of these unmet expectations. Furthermore, this study takes into consideration some “residues”, that means not all events are fit into programs; there are unintended consequences in an open process. All these are object of deep review in this doctoral dissertation. In this community, an analysis of the public policies implemented by Federal and municipal governments to rural schools communities in Brazil was conducted. The way in which public policies toward rural communities are implemented at the schools was reviewed; the goals they pursue and the role played by textbooks are also object of analysis. This study questions the relevance of this tools, mainly if they meet the real needs of the local people. The social representations of teachers and students are considered carefully based on their everyday lives and experiences. / Tese (Doutorado)
