Previous issue date: 2017-09-26 / Fundação São Paulo - FUNDASP / This dissertation is part of the research on History and Description of the Portuguese
Language of the Postgraduate Studies Program in Portuguese Language of the Pontifical
Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC-SP), which is divided into three chapters and
analyzes the work Paulicéia Desvairada by Mário Raul de Morais Andrade, Mário de
Andrade, one of the most important writers of Brazilian Modernism. We note that Mario
incorporates the artistic, philosophical and aesthetic tendencies of his time in his works and
that Paulicéia Desvairada has the contradictions of Modernism, particularly with regard to
the pronominal placement, but it is still an innovative work on the Brazilian scene. The
methodological procedure is the theoretical-descriptive-analytical and in the theoretical
apparatus, we use Fausto (2003), (2006), Brito (1959) and Pinto (1978), (1981) and (1988)
as a way of understanding the historical, literary and linguistic moment. The relevance of
the research is justified, since there are few linguistic studies about Mário de Andrade. The
results attest that Paulicéia Desvairada is a central work of Brazilian modernism / Esta dissertação insere-se na linha de pesquisa História e Descrição da Língua Portuguesa,
importantes escritores do Modernismo brasileiro.
procedimento metodológico é o teórico-descritivo-analítico e no aparato teórico, utilizamos

"I've been guilty of provocation but it's also just common sense marketing" : En studie av framställningen av genus och sexualitet inom reklamkampanjer i form av modefotografiTedengren Brenner, Tova, Pastrana, Jesper January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this essay is to analyze the portrayal of gender and sexuality within fashion photography through a representational study of men and women in select Gucci fashion campaigns, Fall/Winter 1996 and Spring/Summer 2003. In doing so we also find specifics as to how artistic expression can manifest itself in the form of sexist advertising, this being through the sexualisation of fashion photography. The study commences with an introduction, explanation of its purpose, and a descriptive background of the Gucci fashion house and it’s then creative director Tom Ford, the material used and the public criticism it has received as sexist portrayal of women. The frame of the study takes form through the theoretical approaches of gender theory and postfeminism focusing on the structural order of gender, gender roles and the use of feminine pleasure within advertising. Moreover we base our study on the concept of previous research on male pleasure alongside its female counterpart as well as the male concept of power. The analysis is performed through the methodical approach of Roland Barthes semiotic analysis including the use of denotation, connotation and myth as well as a multimodal analysis with a chosen set of semiotic resources; these are primarily focused on terms such as gaze, actions, positioning and camera angles. The material in question is divided into three pictures from each fashion house, totaling a set of six pictures each analyzed individually and ultimately discussed as a whole. Our findings result in a significantly more diverse interpretation than the single result expressed by public, governmental and editorial outcry; implying that the campaigns analysed can, through the use of semiotic and multimodal analysis carry significantly different meaning depending on what pictures are being analyzed as well how it is analyzed and interpreted. As such our results imply significantly less sexist and more conceptually diverse campaigns than what they, and Gucci under Tom Ford, have been known for. Moreover we found that the portrayal of fashion photography can be used as a tool for masking sexual violations through the pretext of artistic expression.

This study explores the possibilities of rewriting the text of a complex novel as a film
script. Film is an important contemporary artform but the actuality of the thematic
content of contemporary Afrikaans novels is not well represented in current films. In
this study an adaptation of the novel, The long silence of Mario Salviati by Etienne
van Heerden (2000) ,t o a script is made in an attempt to provide the Afrikaans
scriptwriter with a workable method. The theme which features prominently in the
adaptation is the experience of identity in the post-colonial and/or post-apartheid era
in South Africa.
Theoretical reflection on the problem of adaptation is essential before the chosen
novel can be turned into a script, since the scriptwriter has to make certain
adjustments during the process of adaptation. The adaptation of a novel to a script
implies the translation of a written, descriptive text into a visual text. When a
complex novel such as The long silence of Mario Salviati is rewritten as a script, a
detailed analysis of the novel must be undertaken in order to identify the relevant
ideological content, the important themes and underlying meanings which should be
retained in the film script. In order to find appropriate visual images for the thematic
content of the novel, contributions of semiotics to film studies are studied and
implemented in the process of visualisation.
The chosen theme for the script of The long silence of Mario Salviati is "Identity,
hybridity and liminality in the Tallejare community". This theme features
prominently in many narratives about post-colonial and post-apartheid issues;
therefore theoretical reflections on the concepts of liminality and hibridity are
included in the study.
There are two main sections in the dissertation. In the first section aspects of
scriptwriting are analysed and discussed in order to develop a workable method for
scriptwriters. The study entertains the hope that more contemporary Afrikaans novels
will be adapted for the big screen or television by the film industry. This is necessary
to ensure that the experience of South African identity is represented adequately in
the Afrikaans film industry.
The second section of the dissertation contains the film script, which is an adaptation
of the novel The long silence of Mario Salviati by Etienne van Heerden. The script
forms an integral part of the study as well as of the dissertation. / Thesis (M.A. (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

Previous issue date: 2018-09-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This work introduces Pope Francis ministry in a different light, an approach which has not been usually adopted, so far: Ignatian spirituality. From the start, it narrates Jorge Mario Bergoglio’s spiritual and intellectual backgrounds, which were firstly incorporated from his own family and further developed when he joined in the Society of Jesus. His trajectory as a clergyman highlights his struggles with his fellow brothers in his religious congregation, where he experienced both setbacks and advancements, especially, when we consider the Latin America historical context at the time, during which Argentina, where he was born and raised, was under a military dictatorship. Nevertheless, in spite of all the political tensions, his decisions always go in the direction of pastoral work and spiritual discernment. Following that, this work highlights the Second Vatican Council major influence over the Church new policies in our contemporary cultural scenario, a context full of challenges which were long felt in the successive Church crisis. This was an important aspect for Pope Benedict XVI resignation, which is also assessed in this work, a resignation that was followed by the conclave ending up in the election of the first Jesuit Pope. The circumstances for his choice and the facts triggered by the new Bishop of Rome, beginning with his decision to be called “Francis” and advancing to the traits of his Petrine ministry, are taken into account, especially in the light of Ignatian spirituality, when references to time, places and people are underlined. Nevertheless, it is a work that introduces Pope Francis inner language in the context of his outspoken life / Este trabalho apresenta o ministério do Papa Francisco sob um enfoque com poucos precedentes, até então: a espiritualidade inaciana.

Technoethics and Sensemaking: Risk Assessment and Knowledge Management of Ethical Hacking in a Sociotechnical SocietyAbu-Shaqra, Baha 17 April 2020 (has links)
Cyber attacks by domestic and foreign threat actors are increasing in frequency and sophistication. Cyber adversaries exploit a cybersecurity skill/knowledge gap and an open society, undermining the information security/privacy of citizens and businesses and eroding trust in governments, thus threatening social and political stability. The use of open digital hacking technologies in ethical hacking in higher education and within broader society raises ethical, technical, social, and political challenges for liberal democracies. Programs teaching ethical hacking in higher education are steadily growing but there is a concern that teaching students hacking skills increases crime risk to society by drawing students toward criminal acts. A cybersecurity skill gap undermines the security/viability of business and government institutions. The thesis presents an examination of opportunities and risks involved in using AI powered intelligence gathering/surveillance technologies in ethical hacking teaching practices in Canada. Taking a qualitative exploratory case study approach, technoethical inquiry theory (Bunge-Luppicini) and Weick’s sensemaking model were applied as a sociotechnical theory (STEI-KW) to explore ethical hacking teaching practices in two Canadian universities. In-depth interviews with ethical hacking university experts, industry practitioners, and policy experts, and a document review were conducted. Findings pointed to a skill/knowledge gap in ethical hacking literature regarding the meanings, ethics, values, skills/knowledge, roles and responsibilities, and practices of ethical hacking and ethical hackers which underlies an identity and legitimacy crisis for professional ethical hacking practitioners; and a Teaching vs Practice cybersecurity skill gap in ethical hacking curricula. Two main S&T innovation risk mitigation initiatives were explored: An OSINT Analyst cybersecurity role and associated body of knowledge foundation framework as an interdisciplinary research area, and a networked centre of excellence of ethical hacking communities of practice as a knowledge management and governance/policy innovation approach focusing on the systematization and standardization of an ethical hacking body of knowledge.

A Productive Misunderstanding? Architecture Theory and French Philosophy 1965 to 1990Berankova, Jana January 2023 (has links)
In this dissertation, I investigate connections between French philosophy and the theory of architecture from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s. In the mid-1960s, many architects became acutely aware of the crisis of modern architecture embodied in the failings of social housing, the routinized corporate modernism of the postwar period, and the commodification of design. They questioned the principles of the Modern Movement and emphasized the “arbitrary” nature of the relationship between form and function while turning to French structuralism, semiology, and post-structuralism for potential answers. My period of study spans from the the period of political uprisings of the 1960s to the advent of digital design in the early 1990s.To date, little in-depth research has been done on the close relation between French philosophy and architecture in this period and its role in foreshadowing postmodern developments.
My dissertation addresses this gap by presenting case studies of the theoretical work of six different architects: Aldo Rossi, Alan Colquhoun, Mario Gandelsonas and Diana Agrest, Bernard Tschumi, and Peter Eisenman. These case studies share a common thread: a preoccupation with structuralist and poststructuralist concerns with language. However, concepts such as “structure,” “event,” and “meaning” often have different meanings for each of these architects. Thus, my project could be described as a history and criticism of architectural theory—one that focuses specifically on the dissonances and contradictions present within the theoretical writings of these architects, while examining the polemics and discussions between them. I consider their built work only to the extent that it helps to elucidate or challenge theoretical concepts.
Thus, in my case study on Aldo Rossi’s writings, I interrogate the analogy between the structuralist concern for articulating discrete and finite linguistic units and the latter’s notion of “type” and urban morphology. In the chapter on Alan Colquhoun, I discuss the influence that the work of Roland Barthes, Claude Lévi-Strauss, and Ferdinand de Saussure had on his reflections about “meaning” and “convention” in architecture. In the case study on the work of Diana Agrest and Mario Gandelsonas, I examine the extent to which their understanding of “theory” and of “ideology” is indebted to the work of Louis Althusser and trace the influence of Roland Barthes, whose seminar on S/Z they attended in Paris before moving to New York in 1971. Likewise, I analyze the role that thinkers such as Henri Lefebvre, Roland Barthes, and the Tel Quel circle in the late 1970s, and Jacques Derrida in the early 1980s had on Bernard Tschumi’s writings on the “polysemy of meaning” and on the “event.” Finally, I examine Peter Eisenman’s collaboration with Jacques Derrida in the 1980s questioning Eisenman’s eclectic appropriation of Derrida’s philosophical concepts.
Besides elucidating this significant period of architecture in which many of the fundamental principles of modern architecture were overturned, in the conclusion of this study, I discuss briefly the “post-critical turn” in the architectural scholarship of the past two decades with the hope of challenging its basic assumptions. My hope is to contribute, through its critical reevaluation, to theory’s renewal.

No
