A Material Framework for Product Design

Asbjørn Sörensen, Charlotte January 2018 (has links)
A new paradigm is slowly making its way into society, affecting our material practice as designers. Materials selection in design and product development has for a long time been dominated by a purely technical approach, mainly focusing on properties and performance. With the increasing evidence of climate change, waste and pollution, environmental effects, we are slowly realizing that unsustainable consumption of materials is no longer an alternative. Previous studies of material practices, both within design educations and the design profession, has primarily dealt with the development of material related methods. This thesis has focused on gaining an in-depth understanding of material practices within design processes, in order to develop a pedagogical framework that facilitates the development of reflective material practices in design education. There are four primary aims of the research presented in this licentiate thesis: (1) ascertain obstacles in the traditional ways of teaching materials to design students, (2) to bridge the differences in language, research culture and pedagogic approaches in design education, (3) to investigate current professional material practices in industrial design, and (4) to develop a new material framework for teaching reflective material practices for design students. During the project, the material framework has been tested and evaluated in two mandatory material courses with first and second year bachelor students from Product Design education over a period of four academic years. A comparative case study was conducted with five design consultancies. The qualitative interviews were transcribed and analysed using category zooming. The outcomes of this research are: (1) a new pedagogic framework for teaching materials to Product Design students in higher education, and (2) insights into professional practices of selecting and designing with materials. The pedagogic model A Material Framework for Product Design is designed to facilitate the development of reflective material practices in design education. The Framework consist of four levels: (1) a pedagogical foundation based on Experiential Learning theory that provide a framework for how to approach teaching and learning, (2) designing and structuring learning activities, (3) creating learning environments that facilitate learning activities, and (4) defining learning objectives, assessment of learning outcomes and detecting signs of learning. The main insights from the study of professional practices suggest: (1) that risk management has a major influence on the material selection process, (2) that negotiations of project boundaries in the ‘fuzzy’ pre-design phase has crucial influence on the risk management aspect of the material criteria activities, and (3) a lack of awareness, that design briefs usually outline material criteria expressed as sensorial characteristics, which are later translated by engineering into final material criteria used for the material selection process. The findings implies that design students would benefit from developing reflective material practices in design education.

[pt] CAMINHANDO NA BUSCA POR ENTENDIMENTOS: PEDRAS, TROPEÇOS E RECOMEÇOS / [en] FOLLOWING THE PATH OF EXPLORATORY PRACTICE: OBSTACLES, STUMBLES AND NEW BEGINNINGS

TAINA SILVA BARBOSA 04 June 2013 (has links)
[en] This research aims at presenting understandings generated from some stumbles on my Exploratory Practice path. It is important to mention that I had to deal with some obstacles when I tried to put into practice the theory I had studied about Exploratory Practice. I carried out the exploratory work during 2008 in two different classes (8th year of Middle School and 2nd year of High School) at a private school in the south zone of Rio de Janeiro. Using my students’ and my own classroom puzzles expressed as a starting point, I designed some potentially exploitable pedagogic activities (PEPAs), which had language learning objectives but whose main purpose was to fundamentally help us understand the quality of our classroom lives. The discourse produced during this work for understanding was analyzed to unearth my students beliefs about their experience as foreign language learners. Although the word stumbles, used in the title and in the beginning of the present abstract, carries a negative connotation, my intention is by no means to consider the activities presented here as mistakes or flaws. On the contrary, my ultimate goal is to reflect upon examples of real activities that, even though did not happen as expected, were able to generate several understandings about my students, myself as a professional, the institution and our educational context. With this dissertation, I intend to motivate other teacherresearchers, who might not have obtained a satisfactory outcome following the path of Exploratory Practice, to keep on this track despite the occasional obstacles they may find.

Designing an instructional leadership framework for underperforming secondary schools in the Free State Province

Thejane, Emmanuel Ntele 08 1900 (has links)
The challenge facing principals currently is to revisit their role to improve external examination results in the Republic of South Africa. Almost all schools in the Free State, in particular those in rural areas such as the Thabo Mofutsanyana Education District; the Xhariep Education District; part of the Motheo Education District (e.g. Botshabelo and Thaba-Nchu) and most urban areas, such as the Lejweleputswa Education District and the Fezile Dabi Education District, have schools which have had poor examination results for the past 20 years. To answer the challenges currently facing principals in the Free State, this research used a qualitative research framework and methodology to articulate research questions and arrive at constructive and instructive models to reveal and close the gaps between performing and underperforming secondary schools in the province. A particular group of principals was chosen, influenced by the performance and underperformance of their schools in the various education districts in the province. Research findings from unstructured interviews with doctoral candidates, and research on China, Finland and Singapore’s education systems with special reference to instructional leadership were conducted. The doctoral candidates’ ideas were confirmed by practical unstructured interviews with Sekgutlong and Beacon high school principals who visited Singapore with the MEC of the Free State Department of Education. In plenary and parallel encounters with principals of secondary schools in the Free State, it emerged that rote learning is prevalent in the Free State secondary schools. Therefore, was resolved by the majority of the principals that critical postmodern instructional leadership should be recommended as an instructional methodology to usher in critical thinking, innovation, creativity and self-reliance in Free State education. In addition, this will close the gap between performing and underperforming secondary schools. Finally, grounded postmodern instructional leadership as a leadership strategy will assist a contemporary secondary school learner’s generation to cope with the academic requirements of tertiary education. / Teaching in reading comprehension strategies and genres in the lower grades : How explicit is it and should it be?

Andersson, Jenny January 2017 (has links)
This master thesis focuses on teaching in reading comprehension strategies and genre knowledge. The study is based on research that shows that education in these areas is important for students' development of reading comprehension. Reading comprehension in itself is the basis for future knowledge acquisition and further studies. The purpose of this study is to investigate how teachers, active in the range from pre-school classes to third grade classes, works explicitly with reading comprehension strategies and genre knowledge.  The research is based on a web-questionnaire survey of all teachers for current grades in the subjects Swedish, Mathematics, Social studies and Science/Technology. It is limited to investigating a municipality in southern Sweden.  The results are coherent in such a way that the majority of teachers asked consider themselves to educate explicitly in reading comprehension strategies. Slightly fewer participants consider themselves to educate explicitly in genre knowledge. Also, based on the answers given by the participants, it turns out that both reading comprehension strategies and genre skills are less taught in this municipality compare to what is recommended according to science.

It was accomplished based on a research about the new set, relative to the scholar organization, created by the changes introduced with the implantation of Cycle Regime with Ongoing Progression at elementary education in public schools from São Paulo. The initial hypothesis was that the this implantation would modify, meaningfully, the school time organization, what would generate a direct impact with the cultural capital and habitus of the teachers. The research took place in 2003 in two public schools from São Paulo state net subordinated to the same Teaching Board. It was made through interviews to two teachers in each school who worked at the second cycle of elementary school, 5th to 8th grades, at a total of four, and to the pedagogic coordinators that were working at this duty since the implantation of the reform. It was also performed the collection and analysis of school documents which expressed the school time organization. This job used the Pierre Bourdieu theoretical corpus as reference, mainly the cultural capital, arbitrary cultural dominant, strategies and habitus, to verify the resulting impact of the reform quoted at the consolidated docent practices. It was testified that the initial hypothesis, concerning the school time, was not proved. Nevertheless, the direct impact on the teacher s cultural capital and habitus regarding to meritocracy, which prizes and settles an ideal student pattern, the pedagogic authority reduction on behalf of ongoing progression that makes impossible the power of the decision about the retention or approval of the pupils, and the valorization and defense of the transmission of scholar contents without which school becomes devoid of its leading duty, was evidenced. Finally the adoption of strategies such as the defense of the Grade Board strengthening and the reduction of the cycles duration from four two years aiming at overcoming these impacts and its effects that are considered damaging, by the docents, to public schools and the pupils future.

The objective is to analyze the distinguished device of the organization of Teaching Practice in the Institute of Education of Rio de Janeiro in the scope of the formation of a new pedagogic culture: the slogan "reform of the primary teaching through the reform of teachers training"; the Institute of Education of Rio de Janeiro; the Primary School of the Institute of Education, analyzed as a device of the teaching reform for its double configuration as a primary municipal school and as a locus of experimentation, demonstration and practice of the School of Teachers; the Programs of primary education of the Federal District published in 1934 and 1937; and, finally, the device which organize the practice of the future teachers during the periods of Teaching Practice. The documental body was defined in the core of the tensions established between the main actors in the conduction of the narrative: Anísio Teixeira, due to the fact that the Institute of Education of Rio de Janeiro was idealized and created in the scope of the reform carried out by him in the Federal District; and Lourenço Filho, the main actor in this process of implementation of the reform of the training of primary teachers. The core documentation of this work is formed, mainly, by four collections of textual sources: the documents of the Archives Lourenço Filho and Anísio Teixeira of the Center of Research and Documentation of Contemporary History of Brazil of the Getúlio Vargas Foundation (CPDOC/FGV); the documents of the Archive of the Superior Institute of Education of Rio de Janeiro; and the journal Archives of the Institute of Education / Este trabalho tem como objeto de estudo a Prática de Ensino na formação de professores primários, compreendendo ser esse o eixo ao redor do qual se organiza o principal dispositivo de renovação da formação de professores do Distrito Federal no período de 1932 a 1937: o Instituto de Educação do Rio de Janeiro.

And this affinity, the need of the meeting between the human being and the nature can be demonstrated in vary artistic records, as pictures, tapestries, wares, sculptures, and other artistic manifestations (and even in people´s own names, of streets, neighbors or cities) and in the core of many religions and philosophies. The second moment of the thesis tried to answer the following question formulated by the tutores to focus better the study objects: Which phase of the scholar education would be pertinent in this study that seeks pioneer examples that owned educative green yards in the city of São Paulo? Actually, if we wish to know about the pioneers built in the city of São Paulo, the right is the famous phrase: begin by the beginning . In other words, the ideal is to focus the research in the scholar yards of the Infant Education, for being the first scholar yard of the life of a child after his or her contact with their´s family yards. And in this way we start to lapidate yard-gardens of paulistanos´ Kindergartens! Research that detailed, raised data and facts known and unpublished about gardens (Landscaping Art) & children (History of Culture, in the case the Infantile) & Kindergarten (Education). Interdisciplinary extension contemplated in the Stricto Sensu`s course profile in Education, Art and History of Culture in which this thesis is inserted. Invisible yards, these and our pioneer paulistanos. Still little is known about them, historically, architecturally. Except lot of works about its Pedagogy based in the Froebel System theory that amalgamated the examples identified and selected. Therefore, we call them invisible Yards, because we need to transform them visible again. Because they were capable to connect garden and infant education and natural environment. And also can be rescued to renew the actual scholar yards, starting by the firsts: of Infant Education. These discoveries are made with emphasis in a last moment, with the deeper study about the garden of the Kindergarten attached to the Escola Normal Caetano de Campos: Histories of a caetanista Kindergarten student, Architecture and Landscaping. Followed by a serie of reflexions of the own graduate student in the reading of projects in this areas. Possible analyses if understood in two big concepts: of Micro-History of Cultural History (Peter Burke) and of Method of the Theory Based on Data , de Glaser and Strauss.

Prats i Fernández, Miquel Àngel 13 July 2004 (has links)
The central objective of my thesis has been, in the first place, to describe and to analyse what happens when ICT is incorporated into a formative presence model of higher education; secondly, to observe the didactic interaction process during the progressive incorporation of the ICT into higher education; thirdly, to explain the process of construction of a web learning platform, consequently, to be the motor of change and improvement from the practice of the didactic process with the support of the ICT into higher education.Given the nature of this kind of research, we have come closer, methodologically, to emergent or multiparadigmatic approach. This research is based in the evaluation, description and analysis of the observed sample and it deepens into a new didactic scene in higher education based on the "Bimodalidad presencial". By this term, we mean a set of interactions between a multimethodologic diversity of dynamic activities in the class-room plus an extension of distance learning, through the use of the ICT.
