Behaviour problems in the classroom : a model for teachers to assist learners with unmet emotional needsWeeks, Franscina Hester 11 1900 (has links)
Tbis study has as primary objective the development of an appropriate model to assist
'
teachers, in South Africa, to be able to understand and assist learners with behaviour
problems. The need for the study has its genesis within the current difficulties teachers
experience in dealing with behaviour problems in the classroom and the fact that increasing
numbers of children are involved. A key facet of the research is its accent on the unmet
emotional needs of learners that function as a behavioural determinant. The study is
analytical descriptive in nature and as such is based on two fundamental dimensions:- to
acquire a sound theoretical understanding of the concepts, causative 'factors and underlying
behaviour problems and the most appropriate means to deal therewith and substantiating
the insights acquired by means of interviews with teachers, school principals, and other
significant role players. An earnest attempt was made to analyse behaviour problems in
terms of the various theoretical frameworks presented within contemporary literature. The
ecological systems model was found to be the most appropriate for the development of the
. referenced model. This stands in sharp contrast to the traditional medical model which in
many instances still forms the basis of current theory and practice.
Learners with emotional problems experience behaviour problems which serve as barriers
to effective learning. Little attention however, has been attributed to putting appropriate
systems in place to assist these learners. A key consideration embodied within the new
Education Policy (NCS DOCUMENT 1997:1 0) is the issue of meeting the needs of all
learners so that they are able to actualise their potential - this includes their emotional
needs. The findings of this study need to be seen within the light of meeting this objective.
In order to address the unmet emotional needs of learner, teachers must attend to the
cognitive mind maps which embody internalized feelings and cognition. A model for
understanding the cognitive maps has been developed as part of this study and serves as
introduction to the model developed to assist learners wi~h behaviour problems.
The study provides a new perspective directed at understanding instead of managing
behaviour problems. / Educational Studies / D. Ed. (Special Needs Education)

Psycho-educational intervention to improve the behaviour of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorderClark, Mavis 11 1900 (has links)
Much has been said and written over recent years about Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity
Disorder. There is a certain amount of confusion as to what exactly the condition
constitutes and controversy continues to rage regarding treatment.
A significant number of children appear to be affected. Previously, parents and teachers
·were blamed for failing to discipline effectively. Often, the difficulties remained
undiagnosed and untreated. Thanks to the wisdom of so many experts who have
generously shared their knowledge and considerable expertise, there is an increased
awareness of ADHD. Although there is no cure, there are ways to manage the difficulties.
However, early diagnosis and intervention is critical. Since many different symptoms are
associated with the disorder, a multi-modal treatment plan has been found to lead to a
better outcome.
For the purpose of this study, a multi-modal programme was planned to address the
needs of a small group of children with ADHD and their parents. The intention was to
empower the parents, within a supportive group environment, by providing them with
knowledge about the disorder and guidelines for managing the difficult behaviour. In
addition, an attempt was made to change the negative behaviour patterns of the children
through the medium of story-telling. It was hoped that by reducing the levels of parental
stress, parents would be more competent to cope with their educational demands, so that
their children could be guided more positively towards adulthood.
The results of the programme were positive. Teachers and parents reported better
behaviour by the children. The parents' stress levels were reduced. The parents
expressed greater understanding about the disorder and a hopefulness that they could
better manage their children. They felt they had benefitted from the advice given by other
parents who were facing similar challenges. However, they felt that a short-term
programme was insufficient to address all their needs and they expressed a need for ongoing
support. In view of the chronicity of the disorder and the constantly changing needs
of the child on his journey towards adulthood, cognisance was taken of the fact that longterm
intervention is essential. / Psychology of Education / D.Ed. (Psychology of Education)

Selbstverständnis der ostdeutschen Frau in der Brüderbewegung in Mission und Gesellschaft / The self-conception of the East-German woman in the Brethren Movement in mission and societyLindorfer, Cordula 06 1900 (has links)
This empirical and theological research investigates the self-conception of the east-german
women in the Brethren Movement, in order to discover by which role model they predominantly
orientated themselves. Therefore women were interviewed, who are – on one hand – socialised
in the Brethren Movement, and on the other hand have partly realized the GDR role model
through working in a typically male business and/or in a leading position. It was possible to describe
in that study three contrasting typologies. On that foundation, thesis and conclusions were
drawn for the development of identity and the operation of the church.
This project wants to make a contribution to the investigation of the –almost untouched academically
– field of the women in the Brethren Movement. At the same time it should serve as an
historical example in how the church dealt with changing role models.
Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / M. Th. (Missiology)

: The Swedish self-image during the NATO-process 2022–2023 as an example of democratic propagandaSarsour, Amer January 2023 (has links)
The primary purpose of this thesis is to analyze the rhetorical transformations of the Swedish self-image during the NATO process, particularly through the lens of democratic propaganda as described by the French philosopher and sociologist Jacques Ellul. It explores how this image is constructed and communicated in Swedish media, with a specific focus on the public service broadcaster Sveriges Television (SVT). The research methodology employed in this thesis is a thematic-oriented close reading approach. The analysis concentrates on passages that primarily discuss the image of Sweden, examining them within the framework of Jacques Ellul's theory of democratic propaganda. The study explores the characteristics of democratic propaganda, its mechanisms, and manifestations. Of particular interest are aspects related to how democratic propaganda can help the state reinforce collective myths about the ideals of democracy as reflected in the analyzed material. Rather than using a specific rhetorical analysis method such as topic analysis or cluster analysis, the study is guided by the questions motivated by the theory itself.

Charismen Entdecken: Eine praktisch-theologische Untersuchung in der Evangelischen Landeskirche in Baden / Discovering Chrismata : a practical theological inquiry in the United Lutheran Church of BadenBaumert, Manfred Otto Willi 03 1900 (has links)
Summary and key words in German and English / Every church faces the challenge of procuring capable workers for the multifaceted task of ministry. For
several decades now official denominational statements and the discipline of Practical Theology have
been calling for a new understanding of giftedness in ecclesial service. As yet little fundamental research
has been done in this area. This dissertation seeks to make a contribution both empirically and
theologically. It marks the first time in the German–speaking world of Practical Theology that the issue
of how one discovers charisms is addressed academically. The specific field of research is located in the
Protestant Regional Church of Baden in southwest Germany. Nevertheless the findings can be applied
more broadly since the research is based on thorough exegetical and systematic–theological analysis and
has been verified empirically.
There has been a quest for the charisms of the Spirit since the beginning of the twentieth century and
even more so now in the face of the societal challenges of postmodernity. In the discussion of the
different theological positionens arise as result that charisms have to be seen with an triune approach. In
addtion, besindes the fact that charisms have a habitual meaning, they first of all have a relational
dimension. The empirical research involved online–interviewings of pastors, plus interviews of church
members. One of the major findings was that the views of pastors on how church members receive gifts
is determined by their theological understanding of the charisms. Pastors discover gifts, not according to
Pauline criteria, but largely according to emotional aspects, as proved by this research. It became
apparent that protestant pastors are of the opinion that New Testament charisms are not first received at
baptism, but already at birth. Another interesting finding is that members of both protestant main stream
churches and pentacostal-charismatic churches hold the same believes about how to receive charisms.
The only difference is their repertoire of gifts. This dissertation focuses on developing guidelines for the
discovery of charisms within the congregation as the local body of the Church.
Practical Theology / Thesis (D. Th. (Practical Theology))

Guidelines for parents, teachers and professionals in the handling of rebellious childrenMathye, Lethabo Violet 11 1900 (has links)
Rebelliousness is the act of defying lawful authority or a resistant way of relating to authority.
It is seen by many as a normal way of development.
The development of rebellious behavior actually starts in childhood and progresses through
to adulthood.
The study focuses on the manner in which the family and school handle the rebellious child and the negative effects that these have on the child's development. These problems may manifest in truancy, delinquency, negativism, runaway, antisocial behavior, alcohol and substance abuse and gang involvement.
The results of the study prove that the environment in which the adolescent lives, contribute greatly to the development and the maintenance of rebellious
behavior.
Guidelines were written for parents, teachers and psychologists regarding the handling of the
rebellious child. / Psychology of Education / M.Ed. (Guidance and Counselling)
