Biel, Evelina, Lundqvist, Mathilda January 2022 (has links)
Studies have shown the importance of intrinsic motivation and Self Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci & Ryan, 2000) when it comes to promoting sport participation and well-being. The amount of intrinsic motivation experienced by an individual can be estimated using the factors Need Satisfaction and Need Frustration and also be influenced by the surrounding people through Need Support and Need Thwarting. This study aimed to investigate whether a correlation between the experience of Need Satisfaction/-Frustration and Need Support/-Thwarting in Swedish badminton players and their intention to continue with badminton in the future existed. 133 active Swedish badminton players participated in the study, age 15 to 66 and older. The intention to continue playing badminton indicated a statistically significant positive correlation with the variables Need Support and Need Satisfaction. No correlation was found between the intention to continue playing badminton and the variables Need Thwarting and Need Frustration. The higher the age, more years as an active badminton player and more years with their current coach, the higher was also the intention to continue with badminton in the future. Need Support and Need Satisfaction can therefore be important areas of interest within sport clubs to promote long-term sport participation, in badminton as well as other sports.

Arbetsmotivation och arbetsprestation i en tid präglad av digitalt arbete : En kvalitativ undersökning ur medarbetarens perspektiv / Work motivation and work performance in a time characterized by digital work : A qualitative survey from the employee's perspective

Erikstedt, Sabina, Lindqvist, Matilda, Scrieciu, Ruxandra January 2022 (has links)
Research questions: What internal motivational factors can positively affect work performance in digital work, from the employee's perspective? Purpose: The purpose of the study is to account for the motivational factors that, from the employee's perspective, affect work motivation and work performance in the increasingly common digital work environment. Method: The study was based on a qualitative method with an abductive approach where seven semi-structured interviews were conducted. To analyze the empirical data, a thematic analysis was used. Conclusion: It can be stated that the digital work environment has not affected work motivation and work performance significantly as large parts of the results are in line with previous studies on motivation research. The study showed that the motivating factors that, according to employees, positively effect work performance in digital work are recognition and personal development.

Exploring experiences of co-worker trust, relatedness and vitality in a Music Therapy well-being intervention in a South African bank

Brand, Adriaan Cornelius January 2013 (has links)
A qualitative research project was conducted to explore experiences of co-worker trust, relatedness and vitality through a short-term Music Therapy intervention designed to promote well-being. Thirteen adults who work at a branch of a South African bank in the Cape Winelands in the Western Cape Province of South Africa participated in the study. Six Music Therapy sessions were conducted in work time. Focus groups were conducted before and after the intervention. Data were generated by means of transcription of the focus groups, and thick description of selected Music Therapy session video clips. Data were analysed by means of content analysis through data-driven, open coding, followed by two levels of categorisation and theme extraction (Ansdell & Pavlicevic, 2001; Gibbs, 2007; Graneham & Lundman, 2004; Hsieh & Shannon, 2005; Punch, 1998). Findings suggest that participants experienced meaningful shifts in experience on all three of the identified focus construct dimensions, as well as on the dimensions of individual competence and autonomy. Further emerging questions were explored regarding the transferability of gains made in the Music Therapy space to the work context. It was proposed that increased experiences of autonomy, competence, and vitality in the therapy space supported the development of trust and enriched relatedness across both work and therapy contexts. Trust and relatedness gains were proposed to be longer-lasting. A progression of relatedness development phases was proposed, through which participants may have been able to achieve notable outcomes pertaining to improved communication, decreased conflict, increased cooperation and interpersonal support. / Dissertation (MMus)--University of Pretoria, 2013. / gm2014 / Music / unrestricted

The digital coach : A systematic literature review on digitalcoaching in physical activity.

Nilsson, Zandra January 2021 (has links)
This is a literature review with aim of analyzing research on digital coaching based on Self-Determination theory. The literature review is based on 15 articles and uses the Self-determination theory (SDT) as an analytical framework for motivational factors as it’s a theory about human motivation, development and well-being. The theory has shown a positive effect on healthy lifestyle habits because the inner motivation has proven to be important for sustainable results. Physical activity contributes to many positive benefits for health and research shows a positive correlation between digital health interventions and commitment to physical activity. Training with a digital coach is flexible but we need to know more to know how digital coaches can motivate their clients at a distance. The design for this study is a systematic literature review with the aim of answering the study's research questions by analyzing and compiling previous research, which creates an overview of the research situation. Results shows that the more support the client receives from a digital coach, the more positive effects on physical activity. The various coaching platforms that have been studied are apps, web-based platform, telephone/SMS and video coaching and regardless of the platform, a positive result emerges. It’s important that the coach strengthens the client's autonomy, competence and relatedness through a collaboration where the client is involved in their goals and plans to feel that the activity and goal is self-chosen, within the client's area of competence and feels social belonging.

The Roles of Coaches, Peers, and Parents in High School Athletes' Motivational Processes: A Mixed-Methods Study

Chu, Tsz Lun 08 1900 (has links)
Grounded in self-determination theory and achievement goal theory, the purpose of this mixed-methods study was to examine the underlying motivational processes from social environments created by coaches, peers, and parents to motivational outcomes in high school athletes, with an emphasis on the relative influence of social agents in basic psychological needs (i.e., autonomy, competence, and relatedness). The quantitative part of this study tested a hierarchical model of high school sport motivation in a final sample of 311 student athletes (204 boys, 107 girls) using structural equation modeling: social factors (coach-, peer-, and parent-created motivational climates) -> psychological mediators (need satisfaction and frustration) -> types of motivation (autonomous motivation, controlled motivation, and amotivation) -> consequences (subjective vitality, athlete burnout, and intention to drop out). Invariance across gender and across team type (varsity vs. non-varsity) was also tested. Adequate model fits were achieved in separate "brighter side" and "darker side" models across the overall sample, gender, and team type. The follow-up qualitative part of this study explored "how" beyond "what" coaches, peers, and parents contribute to the social environments, need frustration, and negative motivational outcomes in sport in a subsample of 37 student athletes (24 boys, 13 girls) who reported high amotivation/burnout and higher than average dropout intentions in the quantitative survey. Content analysis and observation were conducted to interpret the focus group interview data among athletes across gender and team type. The results of both quantitative and qualitative parts were integrated and compared to summarize the roles of coaches, peers, and parents in the "brighter and darker sides" of athletic experience in high school athletes.

The effects of the forced telework : A study of how employees experience that the forced telework affects their motivation

Mattsson, Hilda, Bohlin, Linnéa, Björkqvist, Jonthan January 2021 (has links)
Även teorier kring distansarbetet presenteras där kommunikation och work life balance behandlas. / Background: Companies are becoming increasingly dependent on their employees, as the organization's value-creating process largely takes place through them. It is thus important to motivate, retain and develop the company's employees. Previous studies on how motivation is affected by teleworking differ, where some believe that telework has a positive effect on motivation while others believe the opposite. Before the Covid-19 pandemic, teleworking took place on a more voluntary level, but as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, many companies have had to implement it. Purpose and research question: The purpose of the study is to increase the understanding of how employees feel that motivation is affected by the forced distance work. The study's research question is "How do employees who before the Covid-19 pandemic did not work remotely and employees who before the Covid-19 pandemic worked part-time remotely feel that motivation has been affected by the forced telework?" Literature review: The literature review presents theories about the concept of motivation, where internal and external motivation as well as amotivation are treated. Theories about telework are also presented where communication and work life balance are treated. Method: The researchers in the present study have used a qualitative method. To collect the empirical material, the researchers used semi-structured interviews. Four respondents who before the Covid-19 pandemic did not work remotely and four respondents who before the Covid-19 pandemic worked part-time remotely were interviewed. Conclusion: It has emerged that the impact of forced telework on motivation is independent of whether the employee has a habit of telework or not. It is rather clear that it is how well the employee's individual needs are met that determines how motivation is affected by the forced distance work.

Gender differences in gratifications from fitness app use and implications for health interventions

Klenk, Saskia, Reifegerste, Doreen, Renatus, Rebecca 29 October 2019 (has links)
Previous research has shown gender differences in the motivations to be physically active, in mobile phone gratifications, and social media usage, but so far these areas have not been studied together. Based on the uses and gratification approach and self-determination theory, we aimed to identify gender-specific gratifications and determinants of fitness app usage in combination with fitness-related Facebook groups. Results of an online survey (N = 171) and of a mobile experience sampling method (N = 31) revealed that the app Runtastic was primarily used for achieving goals and to improve enjoyment for physical activity, with men and older participants sharing results with others in Facebook groups more often than women and younger participants. Conclusions regarding genderspecific targeting strategies and user-centered design and content of mHealth features are presented.

Physical activity promotion in children using a novel smartphone game: a pilot randomized controlled trial

Lapusniak, Sam 16 March 2022 (has links)
Background: Regular physical activity (PA) is critical for children’s health and wellbeing. Despite the numerous health benefits, most Canadian children do not meet the Canadian PA guidelines. The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic and social restrictions added new challenges to meeting the PA guidelines. Mobile health (mHealth) technology can be leveraged to promote PA among children. Combining gamification with mHealth interventions has the potential to further improve program effectiveness. Thus, “Draco” was developed as a virtual pet smartphone app to increase PA in children using self-determination theory as a framework to promote intrinsic motivation for PA. Objective: The primary objective is to evaluate the satisfaction and acceptability of the Draco app after four weeks. Secondary objectives include evaluating the preliminary effectiveness of the Draco app to improve average daily steps, average daily MVPA, perceived autonomy for PA, perceived competence for PA, and perceived relatedness to the app. Methods: 43 Canadian children, aged 8-14 years old, not meeting the Canadian PA guidelines of 60min of MVPA per day were randomly allocated to an intervention or control group. Participants in the control group used a step-tracking app for four weeks. Intervention participants were instructed to use the Draco app. Participants completed a baseline and follow-up questionnaire. PA outcomes were tracked using a Fitbit provided to each participant. Intrinsic PA motivation was assessed using an adapted version of the Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI). Intrinsic motivation was assessed using the satisfaction subscale. Exit interviews were completed to determine app acceptability. Results: Participants demonstrated high levels of satisfaction and acceptability with the Draco app 2.83 (1.29). Intervention participants increased their average daily steps by 909 (1701). The control group increased their steps by 46 (1507). The Draco app had a small effect on promoting steps, MVPA, relatedness and small effects at increasing autonomy and competence. Conclusion: Participants demonstrated high levels of satisfaction and acceptability with the app. Participants in the intervention group showed greater increases in PA with small effect sizes. Preliminary evidence highlights the importance of tailoring game design to the users. Technical limitations impacted recruitment and user experiences. Additional development time should be taken to stabilize the app and add new game features for a definitive RCT. / Graduate

Academic self-concept, academic motivation, perceived support and academic performance of immigrant learners in South African schools

Ashley, Jesse 07 1900 (has links)
Several children immigrate to South Africa every year and it has been shown that some migrant children experience challenges in their host countries. These challenges have been documented to affect their academic performance in school. A total number of 164 immigrant learners from Gauteng schools, in grade 11 and 12 participated in the study. The study first, determined the positive correlation between academic motivation, academic self-concept and perceived support and academic performance. Second, the study established whether academic motivation, academic self-concept and perceived support would predict academic performance. Third, the study determined whether academic self-concept would mediate the relationship between academic motivation and academic performance. Correlation, regression and mediation analyses were used to address the aims of the study. There was a positive relationship between academic motivation, academic self-concept, perceived support and academic performance. Only academic self-concept predicted academic performance. Academic self-concept significantly mediated the relationship between academic motivation and academic performance. The results from the study demonstrate the importance of psychological factors informing immigrant learners’ academic performance in school. / Psychology / M.A. (Psychology)

Special Educators' Perceptions on Effective Preparation and Practice for Student Success

Liese, Anne Brackney 01 January 2018 (has links)
Alternative school settings are success prospects for students at risk of school failure. However, research on the daily experiences of the special educators in alternate school settings tasked with educating the at-risk population, is limited. The purpose of this phenomenological study was (a) to recognize the perceptions of special educators concerning their preparation to advance the success of SEN students who are at risk of school failure; (b) to determine how to improve special educator preparation programs in alternative school settings. Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory, focused on student success provided the study's framework. Twelve semistructured interviews were conducted to examine special educators' perceptions on preparation and practice for student success. Data were analyzed through block coding, code comparison and thematic searches. The study's results included accounts of special educators' perceptions and challenges related to preparation and practice for student success in alternate school settings. Emergent themes included applying classroom structure and technology, as well as individualized student instruction. Participants cited a need for rich teacher/student relationships to advance student success. Included are inferences regarding the development of teacher/student relationships. Also included are suggestions for educational leaders to consider while preparing preparatory methods for special educators who teach within the alternative school setting such as administrator knowledge of what special educators require to teach in the alternate classroom. This study may lead to social change by providing information on special educator preparation coursework meant to develop student success for the alternative school student population.
