Inget klöver utan matematik : En studie av matematik i yrkesutbildning och yrkesliv / No clover without mathematics : A study of mathematics in vocational education and professional life

Muhrman, Karolina January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the thesis is to increase understanding of aspects that affect the relationship between vocational education students’ knowledge and knowledge needed in professional life. This is examining through different actors' perspectives on the professional needs of mathematics skills, mathematics teaching in vocational programs and the design of the national curriculum Gy11. The study is conducted in the upper secondary natural resources management program with focus on agricultural education and the agricultural profession. The empirical material consists of qualitative interviews with professional farmers, vocational teachers, mathematics teachers and students. The results of the empirical study have been analyzed in relation to the curriculum Gy11. Bernstein's curriculum theoretical perspective, and particularly the concepts educational codes and discourses, is used for the analysis, in some parts along with D'Ambrosio’s ethno mathematical perspective. The results show that good math skills are essential for the farming profession but in some cases there is a discursive gap between school mathematics teaching and the need for mathematical skills in professional life. Although the subject plan for mathematics is focusing on mathematics related to the profession students are trained for, the mathematics teaching is largely tied to a textbook with tasks unrelated to the students’ future profession. The organization of the teaching is controlled by a variety of frame factors that can concern time, group compositions and schedule, but also the teachers' view of knowledge. The national tests represent a significant frame factor which in many cases controls the teaching to a higher degree than what the content of the subject plan does. The weak connection to the students' professional orientation makes them unmotivated to learn mathematics because they have trouble seeing how they can use their knowledge in their future profession. Students also have difficulties in recontextualizing their mathematical skills from the school context in the professional life context, which among other things can reduce their employability.

Cykler och loopar i Salongen : En studie av återkoppling i frisörklassrummet / Cycles and loops in the salon : A qualitative study of the role of feedback in the hairdressing classroom

Öhman, Anna January 2015 (has links)
The interest in this empirical study aims at assessment, more precisely feedback as part of ordinary activities within hairdressing education. The study investigates feedback practices related to assessment of knowing during production, with focus on communication between student and teacher. Communication is regarded as interactively constructed and is investigated through a multimodal social semiotic perspective which implies studying verbal as well as nonverbal resources in meaning making. Speech and body movements are not subordinate to each other and are studied as contributing in communication on their own terms. Video observations were used to investigate feedback practices in the hairdressing classroom, during a couple of lessons when last year’s students received customers for various treatments. From one hour recording, a selection was made showing communication between student and teacher with joint focus of attention during production. The selection is based on the assumption of feedback as interactively constructed and represented in a multimodal way. The analysis of the feedback practice shows a multifaceted result, since each interaction between a student and a teacher is unique. Nevertheless, a recurrent pattern of feedback construction could be discerned. Three important functions of feedback were distinguished, that of control, instruction and evaluation. Furthermore, these functions interact in temporal processes of cycles and loops. The core of feedback practice is found within the loop, where questions and wonders from the student are brought into a joint investigation.

Historia för yrkesprogrammen : Innehåll och betydelse i policy och praktik / History for Vocational Education and Training : Content and Meaning in Policy and Practice

Ledman, Kristina January 2015 (has links)
This thesis offers critical perspectives on a history syllabus for vocational education and training (VET) tracks in Swedish upper secondary schools and adds to our knowledge and understanding of the educative function of history education for the individual and for society. The overall aim of this thesis is to critically investigate discourses that are voiced in different fields about the construction and reproduction of the history curriculum in VET tracks. A general question addressed is how vertical (critical and theoretical) and horizontal knowledge is articulated by the discourses in terms of the meaning of history in a VET context. The following four research questions were the focus of the four different studies in this thesis: How were non-vocational subjects discussed on a policy level during the post-war period, and what meanings were ascribed to history education? What aspects of history as a field of knowledge are recontextualised into a pedagogic discourse for the VET curriculum? How do teachers perceive the history syllabus? What do the students express concerning the history syllabus and history education? The results of these studies are reported in separate papers, and the aggregated results are analysed in this thesis. The data consisted of government bills and committee reports, material from the National Agency of Education archives, and interview data gathered through interviews with 5 teachers and 46 students. The major theoretical inspiration comes from Basil Bernstein whose theories of classification and framing, pedagogic discourse, pedagogic code, and vertical and horizontal discourses are used in the analysis. With the aid of these concepts, the content and meaning of history education for VET are connected to macro levels of education, and the way in which education reproduces social order when certain forms of knowledge are distributed to different groups in society is discussed. Three major conclusions are drawn. First, history as a pedagogic discourse comes forward as versatile and contradictory when the results from the studies are aggregated. There is, however, a shared understanding that the meaning of history in VET is to educate the students to become democratic and active citizens. Secondly, the investigated discourses ascribe history education with the potential to distribute critical and powerful knowledge. The students see a value for history education in their future as citizens and for giving them access the public conversation of society. A final conclusion is that the pedagogic code, embedded in the history curriculum, can be interpreted in two different ways. The emphasis on competencies and the focus on the last two hundred years can be interpreted as (A) an expression of a wish for immediate utility and thus an instrumental view of education or (B) the recontextualisation of scientific theories, concepts, and practices into a pedagogic discourse as a means to give students access to disciplinary (powerful) knowledge.

Lära för framtiden : Transfer i teknisk yrkesutbildning / Learning for the Future : Transfer in Technical Vocational Education

Kilbrink, Nina January 2013 (has links)
This thesis concerns transfer in relation to teaching and learning with technical content and technical vocational education. Transfer of learning is fundamental, since no one can predict the future, and education cannot possibly cover all content that pupils will need in the future. What you learn in different contexts needs to be useful in new unknown contexts, where technology may have developed or the problems to solve might be different.   The aim of this thesis is to study experiences of transfer in order to deepen the understanding of transfer and factors for transfer. A further aim is to contribute with knowledge about how theory and practice are handled and experienced in relation to learning with technical content and to learning in different arenas. The theoretical framework is the phenomenology of the life-word and the lived and experienced world is put in focus. Therefore, pupils, teachers and supervisors in technical vocational education in Swedish upper secondary school have been interviewed about their experiences of teaching and learning, and their narratives have been analysed. One of the studies in the thesis also concerns how theoretical and practical tasks are handled and experienced in technology education in Swedish compulsory school.  The results show that different experiences from different learning arenas are important for the students’ learning during the education, but also that the teachers and the supervisors have an important role in connecting those experiences and creating possibilities for students to reflect on the experiences. According to the results in this thesis, teacher education could emphasise 1) the importance of helping students reflect upon and make connections between experiences made in different arenas and 2) the importance of interweaving theory and practice in education. Learning can thereby go beyond the learning situation and also be useful in future unknown situations, with new technical developments. / <p></p><p><strong></strong> </p>

Språkliga vidder i praktiska ämnen : Språkliga dimensioner inom det Industritekniska programmet på gymnasiet / Linguistic expanses in practical subjects : Linguistic dimensions within the Industrial-technical programme at uppersecondary school

Sebastian, Room January 2022 (has links)
This thesis examines what the linguistic dimensions consists of within the upper secondaryshool’s Industrial Engineering programme, with a focus on the Swedish language. The surveywas conducted using the help of interviews where six vocational teachers within theprogramme have been asked questions regarding the language and how it relates to theprogramme-wide subjects and courses. What kind of position is the language considered tohave within the education and how is it used in a workshop eniviroment when it comes toteaching? The study is linked to theories about literacy and what teacher’s strategies based onthis look like when it comes to how the language is used in the education and the futureprofession. The interviews show that the language within the Industrial Technical programmehas an important function when it comes to both teaching and the coming connection to thefuture profession. The practicality of the programme includes requirements for a linguisticcompetence based on the professional language and terminology of the profession.

Rova, Josefine January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study was to investigate vocational teachers experience in work environment education at care and nursing high schools in Sweden. The study was conducted through nine semi-structured interviews and a thematic content analysis was performed. The result showed that vocational teachers in nursing high schoolsexperience a combination of complexity and freedom of choice. They teach based on their own knowledge and experience. The content and materials are their own choosing, and they experience challenges in achieving a nationally standardized work environment education. They struggle to make the subject interesting and relevant for the students. It also appears that they experience it demanding to carry out work environment education that prepares the students for all types of work environment risk factors that exist in a healthcare profession. The findings suggest a need of greater collaboration with other professions and the business community. To change the work environment in the healthcare sector the vocational teachers imply a need of a greater commitment from management, the municipality, and the society at large.

Mellan samtid och tradition : folkhögskolans identitet i kursutbudets yrkesinriktning / Contemporary and Traditional : the identity of the Swedish folk high school as expressed in its vocational orientation

Landström, Inger January 2004 (has links)
In this thesis the vocational orientation of the courses offered - as an expression of the folk high school's self-identity- is analysed. The point of departure was that what the folk high school do, is a way to show what it wants to be and, therefore, reflects what it is. Focus is on how the folk high school meets with contemporary tasks and demands in different areas of society. The research objects are, the folk high school as type of school (a total of 147 schools) and a sample of ten individual schools with different ownership. The study is about what the offered courses reveal about the folk high school's reflections and conclusions as regards its future activities in relation to its history and contemporary society. The theoretical framework of the thesis is built on the sociologist Anthony Giddens 'Theory of Structuration' and the concepts of structure and agency. Reflections about the surrounding world and the contributions the schools' want to make in society is assumed to result in a more or less conscious strategy for the future, the folk high school's course politics as it is expressed in action. The identity has been interpreted in vocational roles as they appear in course contents. The word 'vocation' is used in almost the same sense as Giddens defines 'work'. Self-identity was analysed from three different kinds of texts and with one question for each. In the first perspective focus is on official investigations and political decisions, in the period 1970-2000. What role in society is imposed upon the folk high school in contemporary educational policies? In the second perspective all courses offered at all folk high schools in 1972 and 2000 are studied, in order to present a picture of the overall pattern of vocational orientation. In the third perspective the course politics of the ten selected folk high schools are investigated, from the start of the respective schools, and in relation to what each school thinks it 'is'- with different owners and in its particular geographical situation. One overriding conclusion is that the characteristics that make the identity of the folk high school seem unclear and paradoxical are the very same that constitute the self-identity of the folk high school as being complex and multifaceted. The self-identity seems paradoxical when the vocational orientation presents itself as both preserving traditions and answering to today's needs. In other words, the school 'does what it has always done' (is conservative) and at the same time 'captures new needs and tasks' (is flexible). The folk high school's role and uniqueness in what they actually do can be understood as what I have called 'contemporaneous civic functionaries'. Their profiles emerge when flexibility is based on history. I want to designate 'existential rationality' to the motivating mechanism that seems to at the same time force changes and lean on own experiences. Expressing contemporary self-identity is grounded in the individual tradition as motivationbased values, cultural and geographic conditions.
