Věčné jinošství Jiřího Karáska ze Lvovic / The Eternal Boyhood of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic

Kolařík, Karel January 2012 (has links)
The thesis attempts to describe the life and work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic through an analysis of his lifestyle, i.e. the way in which he organized, embellished and individualized his life. Karásek sought to shape his existence as an artwork, in accordance with the inspirational concepts of the contemporary and antecedent thinkers and artists (e.g. Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater and Maurice Maeterlinck). He accented its integrity and orientation towards beauty. In accord with his aesthetic vision (and his literary work) Karásek conditioned beauty with sadness and pain and attempted to emphasize melancholic beauty, unity in disunion. For that purpose he would accentuate particularly the disintegrative, critical elements, evoking the impression of unsuccessful, self-destructive endeavor to reach life's high ideal. This corresponded with his tragic concept of the artist immolating himself for his Art. I approach Karásek's lifestyle through the use of the terms youth and (eternal) boyhood, which Karásek himself employed as symbols of mournfully beautiful existence in his literary work. I define a youth - in accordance with the romantic and symbolist interpretation - as a person at odds with reality (contemporary truths, customs and rules), a solitary, unique being, trying to construct a new world - only...

Bottex-Ferragne, Ariane 08 1900 (has links)
The Reclus de Molliens, an early 13th century French poet, is the author of two moralizing, religious and didactic texts known as Miserere and Carité. Despite its wide circulation, as well as its significant influence over subsequent generations of authors and readers, this work has been largely neglected by modern critics: the most recent monograph on Miserere and Carité was indeed published over one hundred thirty years ago (Van Hamel, 1885). The following dissertation aims at filling this gap in research by updating the basic data regarding the circulation and literary legacy of this medieval best-seller. Moreover, it provides a reflection surrounding the poetics of this work, which draws on its status as a part of a forgotten literary canon. The fact that Miserere and Carité were so widely read, and therefore constituted models and poetic benchmarks for a wide audience, makes them ideal case studies to rethink the vitality and the codes of moralizing poetry, based on the actual criteria and reading practices of the medieval audience. The historical documentation pertaining to the Reclus de Molliens reveals that the versification system adopted in Miserere and Carité, known as the Helinandian stanza (8aabaabbbabba), plays a vital role in the reception of his works. As will be demonstrated, works that are composed using this type of verse follow a consistent set of poetic rules (part 1). This means that they constitute a legitimate poetic system, with its own “horizon of expectations” and reading conventions (part 2). These implicit rules, which seem to have impacted the reception of Miserere and Carité, also contribute to the construction of meaning by adding a dramatic impact to their moralizing content (part 3). Once the analysis of Miserere and Carité is thus imbricated in the analysis its “formal family”, it will then be possible to define a poetics of the moralizing text written in Helinandian stanza, guided and framed by this successful poet.

Parazitické hlasy a protetická já: Detekce post-lyrického subjektu v dílech současné digitální literatury / Parasitic Voices and Prosthetic Selves: Detecting the Post-Lyrical Subject in the Works of Contemporary Digital Literature

Suchánek, Tomáš January 2021 (has links)
This diploma thesis explores subjectivity in the domain of so-called digital writing, that is, in texts of largely experimental nature generated by computer algorithms (or with their assistance). In order to do so, the thesis briefly covers the history of digital writing, its mediatic specificities, poetics as well as various theoretical and philosophical conceptualizations. Most importantly, it undertakes an analysis of a post-lyrical subject, a concept devised by Janez Strehovec, that is common to all cases of generative writing under focus. For its comparative analysis, the thesis deals with the recent works from contemporary creators who approach algorithmic textuality from variegated perspectives, incl. Nick Montfort, Allison Parish, Stephanie Strickland, Li Zilles, and Jörg Piringer. Texts generated by programs are conceived of as expressing a new, parasitic and prosthetic, genus of cyber-textual subjectivity that defies the traditional lyric and expands its pool "by other means," as Marjorie Perloff would say. Such a tendency results in conceptually as well as formally complex literary corpus "infected" by - to further exploit the suggested metaphor - parasitic voices and prosthetic selves. Unlike in generic lyric, the post- lyrical subject surpasses the confines of poetry as genre; it is...

We don't listen to the song of the world anymore

Ulriksson, Tanja January 2022 (has links)
In this paper I am asking the question about the European human values and their effect on philosophy and thought through three different philosophers. What I want to examine is how we can get past thinking human subjects as constituted by the hierarchical and often oppositional differences that were installed by means of a normalizing universal with colonial roots. The essay begins with Nietzsche’s geneological account of how and when European philosophy began to disassemble itself from within, focusing on his idea of the need for a new man. Then I turn to Frantz Fanon and the decolonization of European thought and power, as one based on violence and hiererachy. Édouard Glissants poetics of Relation is then essential for thinking man today in the entangled, constantly changing world that we live in.

An Oblique Blackness: Reading Racial Formation in the Aesthetics of George Elliott Clarke, Dionne Brand, and Wayde Compton

Haynes, Jeremy D. 10 1900 (has links)

This thesis examines how the poetics of George Elliott Clarke, Dionne Brand and Wayde Compton articulate unique aesthetic voices that are representative of a range of ethnic communities that collectively make-up blackness in Canada. Despite the different backgrounds, geographies, and ethnicities of these authors, blackness in Canada is regularly viewed as a homogeneous community that is most closely tied to the cultural histories of the American South and the Atlantic slave trade. Black Canadians have historically been excluded from the official narratives of the nation, disassociating blackness from Canadian-ness. Epithets such as “African-Canadian” are indicative of the way race distances citizenship and belonging. Each of these authors expresses an aesthetic through their poetics that is representative of the unique combination of social, political, cultural, and ethnic interactions that can be collectively described as racial formation. While each of these authors orients her or his own ethnic community in relation to the nation in different ways, their focus on collapsing the distance between citizenship and belonging can be read as a base for forming community from which collective resistance to the racial violence of exclusion can be grounded.
/ Master of English

Jia, Arilys 08 1900 (has links)
This master’s thesis is the first step in a poetic and narratological study of the textual form commonly referred to as “choose-your-own-adventure books”, which invites readers to identify with its diegetic universe’s protagonist and to engage in the building of the narrative as it is read. How does narration become the site of a unified multiplicity of narratives––an oxymoron, to say the least––whose virtualities depend on the decisions of a reader-character in order to be actualized? How can we characterize the singular poetics of these texts through the prism of this fundamental plurality? The first part of the thesis is dedicated to the establishing of methodological foundations that can provide a manner of taxonomy for interactive fiction. Espen Aarseth's cybertextual approach constitutes this main basis and allows for the relation of choose-your-own-adventure books with the digital form of hyperfiction, to which it is often compared due to a common hypertextual functioning. The choose-your-own-adventure genre is then examined in the light of the narrative concept of multiversality, revealing that while choose-your-own-adventure books are not perfect examples of multiversal narrative, their thematisation or poetisation of the plurality of possible realities reaches a point where it is possible to speak of multiversal effects or, at least, of a multiversal teleology. The second part of the thesis examines each of the three works making up the main corpus, La nuit je suis Buffy Summers (2007) by Chloé Delaume, Nils Jacket contre l’Agent X (2007) by JFM and La Salamandre (2000) by Emmanuel Aquin, and each’s specific way of exploiting multiversality and the concept of possible or virtual realities. This thesis is thus intended as a narratological entry into a more in-depth poetic study of a liminal genre, neither quite narrative nor quite game, that has not yet been the object of any systematic examination. In so doing, it also aims to challenge the often hasty or rudimentary application to choose-your-own-adventure books of theoretical frameworks developed for more established fictional forms, which then prove unfit to represent the full poetic range of the genre.

Arquitectura blanca. Mito, poética, ciencia. El color blanco en la arquitectura contemporánea

Marco, Paolo de 01 February 2021 (has links)
[EN] Today it is possible to observe a global diffusion of white color in the panorama of contemporary architecture. The issues linked to the use of this particular color, penetrate with deep roots in ancient times, in culture, in history. To find the reasons for the use of white, this research proposes a holistic point of view, analyzing the myth, the poetics and the science of white in architecture. The three keys to reading the phenomenon of white lead to different reasons to explain its use. Reading keys that are separated exclusively to obtain a more orderly study of the theme, but that in the complexity of architecture act in an inseparable way. The thesis studies and analyzes the scenario of contemporary architecture starting from color, being aware that this represents only one parameter among the many that realize the shape and space of architecture. From the works of the past, from the treatises and from the theories, today arrives a narration of continuous alternations - of epochs of revival, but also of rebirths and vanguards -, a true myth in which the white color, In spite of everything, it endures with constancy until it is established in the present memory. As we approach today's times, the outlines of this myth become clearer and more precise, and historical and cultural issues are combined with the innovated needs of contemporary architectural practice. Various architects use white for their works and to materialize certain and different ideas. This defines a poetics of white, or in other words, an essentially subjective form of thinking and building architecture. To analyze these individual and specific instances, the analysis of architectural works is accompanied by a series of dialogues on white that enrich the theme with the direct experience of architects. Although color is a very subjective phenomenon by its nature, the use of white in architecture is supported by science and, in particular, by some physical and chemical advantages. The construction of white is possible thanks to various techniques that expand and extend its long construction tradition thanks to the renewed efficiency of ancient methods, but also with new technologies and materials. The study focuses in particular on the analysis of Spanish, Portuguese and Italian architectural culture, but the research is not limited to these geographical areas, extending in considering a global horizon for white architecture. The analysis of works of white architecture published in scientific journals of international importance, provides a statistical and objective data of the global condition of the issue. The definition of the contemporary tendency to use white dates back to the second half of the twentieth century, when some works embrace the values of myth and renew it in a contemporary way. Despite this, the global diffusion of white in architecture is due to its capacity to represent different and multiple ideals. It is therefore deduced that white is not the color of homogenization, but on the contrary it is a common factor in many contemporary experiences. / Marco, PD. (2020). Arquitectura blanca. EXPANDED CHOREOGRAPHY : Shifting the agency of movement in The Artificial Nature Project and 69 positions

Invartsen, Mette January 2016 (has links)
Through two books and a series of video documentations of live performances Mette Ingvartsen makes choreography into a territory of physical, artistic and social experimentation. The Artificial Nature Series focusses on how relations between human and non-human agency can be explored and reconfigured through choreography. By investigating and creating a ‘nonhuman theater’ questions regarding material agency, ecology, natural disasters, the Anthropocene and non-subjective performativity are posed. The resulting reflections are closely related to the poetic principles utilized to create the performances, while also drawing connections to territories outside theater. By contrast, 69 positions inscribes itself into a history of human performance with afocus on nudity, sexuality and how the body historically has been a site for political struggles. By creating a guided tour through sexual performances – from the naked protest actions of the 1960’s, through an archive ofpersonal performances into a reflection on contemporary sexual practice – this solo work rethinks audience participation and proposes a notion of soft and social choreography. The contrasting performative strategiesarticulate a twofold notion of expanded choreography: on the one hand movement is extended beyond the human body by including the agency of nonhuman performers, and on the other hand, movement is expanded into animaginary and virtual space thanks to ‘language choreography’. /
LINKS

https://vimeo.com/164552586

https://vimeo.com/164558381

La ville de Rebus : polarités urbaines dans les romans d'Ian Rankin (1987-2007) / Rebus's City : urban polarities in the novels of Ian Rankin (1987-2007)

Dujarric, Florence 07 December 2013 (has links)
The aim of the present study is to analyse the representations of the city to be found in Ian Rankin’s crime fiction series of which Inspector Rebus is the protagonist. Polarization being one of the structuring principles of the author’s writing, our work focuses on several pairs of antagonist notions in turn. The first one is the opposition between “high” and “low” (or “popular”) literature, the latter category being often associated with crime fiction. New categorizations of contemporary Scottish crime fiction are thus put to the test so as to assess its role and place within the landscape of Scottish literary and artistic life.Next the way Rankin’s novels map Edinburgh as a topography both real and imaginary is explored. As John Rebus endlessly paces the streets of the city, a literary geography gradually emerges and takes shape from one novel to the next, thus determining a network of focal points and potential trajectories which are depicted in the maps to be found in the annexes. This does not preclude the use of a more urban-generic type of space, which seems to have been modelled on representations of the city deriving from movies. In time, Rebus’ Edinburgh can be seen as a character in its own right, one fraught with ambiguities stemming from the Gothic novel tradition. This Gothic filiation is visible in the aesthetic of the city, while the polarity between surface representations and subterranean depths, full of twists and turns, calls into question the very possibility of mapping the city as it gradually discloses its past and unconscious memories.
