ideologias.
medida as versões acabam
por reconstruir, intensificar ou atenuar o preconceito
percebido na obra original. O
corpus de análise é constituído por The Merchant of
Venice, juntamente com três
traduções brasileiras, feitas por Carlos Alberto Nunes,
Cunha Medeiros/Oscar
Mendes, e Barbara Heliodora; Titus Andronicus, e as

translations deal with
Shakespeare`s black male characters: The Prince of Morocco
in The Merchant of
Venice, Aaron in Titus Andronicus and Othello. The study
is based on the
assumption that racial prejudice is an ideological
construct, mediated by language,
and that translation as a discursive mode may play an
important role in the
reproduction of ideology. The research was conducted in
three steps: (i)
identification of instances of racist discourse in the
source text; (ii) identification
in the target text of the translated instances of such
racist discourse; (iii) analysis
of these translations and the general effect they may have
on the different end
products, so as to verify whether the Brazilian versions
reconstruct, intensify or
mitigate the prejudice identified in the original work.
The plays examined were
The Merchant of Venice, and three Brazilian translations
by Carlos Alberto
Nunes, Cunha Medeiros/Oscar Mendes, and Barbara Heliodora;
Titus Andronicus,
in renderings by these same translators; and Othello, as
translated by Onestaldo de
Pennafort, Carlos Alberto Nunes, Cunha Medeiros/Oscar
Mendes, Péricles
Eugênio da Silva Ramos, Barbara Heliodora, Beatriz Viegas-

[en] I HAD A LOT OF PREJUDICE, RIGHT, EXU NO!: NARRATIVES OF RESISTANCE TO THE STIGMATIZATION OF RELIGIOUS PRACTICES OF AFRICAN MATRIX / [pt] EU TINHA MÓ PRECONCEITO, NÉ, EXU NÃO!: NARRATIVAS DE RESISTÊNCIA À ESTIGMATIZAÇÃO DAS PRÁTICAS RELIGIOSAS DE MATRIZ AFRICANACLARISSA FRANCA H DE C E SOUZA 16 August 2018 (has links)
[en] The present research aims to deepen the knowledge and social reflections regarding the resistance to stigmatization of religious practices of african matrix, from the narrative-interactive microanalysis of an interview between two people engaged in these practices. Sociointeractional Perspective of Discourse and Narrative Analysis ground the work, which is qualitative-interpretativist, with ethnographic inspiration. During the interview, the participants co-create a central narrative, whose content is the life story of the interviewee, based on small narrative episodes embedded, related to the religious context in which they are inserted. The interlocutors need to handle the tension of the stigma of religious practices of african matrix, that permeate all conversation, and they also have to resist it. The analysis of the social encounter suggests a link between this stigmatization and the racist macrodiscourses, which devalue blacknesses and oppress black people. In addition, the study of the interactional context points out that other stigmas, such as religion and social class, contribute to labeling religious practices of african matrix as deviant. The interlocutors resort to reflexivity in the act of narrating, which fulfills the function of resisting the derogatory stereotypes (savagery, wickedness, primitivism, ignorance) to which religious practices of african matrix have been related in common sense. as well as counteracting it to the values and beliefs that practitioners consider appropriate to their social identities. In this way, they distribute alternative discourses, with values and beliefs appropriate to the social identities they intend to perform.

[en] This work aims to highlight an epistemological and methodological repertoire that considers the existence of more than one historical and political place to produce knowledge. It also commits to the reorientation of the race relations research through counter-storytelling. Apply these narratives as the central element of analysis allows its use as essential data for the dissolution of power relations in society and qualifies them as survival strategies and means of resistance, as well as the revision of historical facts, contributing to building memory.

[en] LOOKING FOR NEW PATHS: BLACK WOMEN AND THEIR EXPERIENCES FROM THE PRISON SYSTEM OF RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] À PROCURA DE NOVOS CAMINHOS: MULHERES NEGRAS E SUAS EXPERIÊNCIAS A PARTIR DO SISTEMA PRISIONAL DO RIO DE JANEIROADRIANA SEVERO RODRIGUES 25 November 2010 (has links)
No Brasil
abordagens discriminatórias e violentas, ferindo a dignidade e violando direitos.
Neste contexto o presente estudo questiona as
expressões do racismo dentro do sistema prisional. O estudo contou com a
contribuição de 10 mulheres internas e egressas do sistema prisional do Rio de
Janeiro.
[en] This purpose of this work is to know if Brazilian black women experienced
a different treatment within prison as a consequence of their race. During the last
four years is possible to observe an expressive growth of crimes committed by
women in Brazil, which calls for the attention of the experts on the subject.
Futhermore, the Brazilian prisional system keeps structural deficiencies which
reinforce the institutional culture of violence by promoting discriminatory
practices and approaches that hurt the dignity and violate the rights. These
practices also occur within female prisions, and our hypothesis is that they can be
better observed from a ethnical and racial point of view. This reality reveals
another face of social inequality and racism that can accentuate becoming criminal
and vulnerabilities to the commission of a crime. In this context, the present work
discuss the expressions of racism within the prisional system. The study relied on
the contribution of ten women who are, or were, under the prisional system of Rio
de Janeiro. The work shows that the black population of the state of Rio de
Janeiro is more represented in prisons than in the general population of the state.
Eventhough, the interviewed women did not recognize racism expressions within
the prisons.

[en] The work consists in evaluating public policies to combat racism, more specifically those of a punitive character, and its effectiveness as a mechanism for promoting racial equality. Result of long political struggle by black militants, the criminalization of racism is, for them, an important normative framework to
combat racial discrimination. For others, the penal system, having racist support base, could not serve as a path to the emancipatory project of black men and women in Brazil. The limitations and possibilities of using the law to defend the identities of sound conformation appears as question needed to deal with this
tension. From the approximation of categories of analysis used by the Theory of Recognition and the Critical Criminology, aims to formulate a theoreticalpractical guide for articulating appropriate legal measures to demands for recognition.

[pt] A IMIGRAÇÃO NA UNIÃO EUROPEIA: UMA LEITURA CRÍTICA A PARTIR DO NEXO ENTRE SECURITIZAÇÃO, CIDADANIA E IDENTIDADE TRANSNACIONAL / [en] IMMIGRATION IN THE EUROPEAN UNION: A CRITICAL ANALYSIS ON THE RELATION BETWEEN SECURITIZATION, CITIZENSHIP AND TRANSNATIONAL IDENTITYSUZANA DE SOUZA LIMA VELASCO 12 March 2012 (has links)
[en] The dissertation analyzes the relationship between the securitization of immigration in the European Union (EU) and the increase of transnational movement within the continent, mainly since the 1990’s. The main purpose of the research is to examine how the EU has institutionalized the immigrant as an existential threat and how this process is related to the resistance of the nation-state as the locus of identity and condition to citizenship, even in the constitution of European citizenship. At the same time the EU has consolidated securitarian practices against the immigrant, reinforcing the exclusion already undertaken by its member states, it has suffered opposition from these same states, which, fearful of losing sovereignty, have also intensified the security measures on immigration. The study is based on Huysmans’ (2006) and Bigo’s (2002, 2007) framework on securitization and Balibar’s (2004a, 2004b, 2006) approach on transnational identity, as opposed to the idea of a postnational citizenship in Europe, sustained by authors like Habermas (1998, 2001, 2003). Besides an institutional emphasis, with the analysis of legislation and practices such as border controls and visa regulations, the research focuses on political discourses which identify the immigrant as a threat. Racism against Roma and muslims in the EU highlights how the status of nationality is not sufficient nowadays to not be considered an immigrant (Sayad, 1998, 2004), and how transnational mobility challenges the mythical purity of the modern nation-state’s identity.

[en] VIOLENCE IN THE POSTCOLOIAL CITY: IMAGINATIONS, MATERIALITIES AND EXPERIENCES OF VIOLENCE IN THE CITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] VIOLÊNCIA NA CIDADE PÓS-COLONIAL: IMAGINAÇÕES, MATERIALIDADES E EXPERIÊNCIAS DA VIOLÊNCIA NA CIDADE DO RIO DE JANEIRO22 June 2020 (has links)
[en] This thesis presents a decolonial interpretation on the ways in which violence
crosses imaginations, materialities and experiences in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It
argues that violence produces and reproduces representations, forms of urban
management and everyday experiences that coexist and intersect in Rio de Janeiro,
as a city that seeks to build itself as post-colonial in the everyday. To this end,
the thesis addresses the relationship between violence and the city through four
points of contact. First, the thesis presents the concept of city-violence, from
which an interpretation is built on the relationship between the material and
immaterial formation of the city of Rio de Janeiro and the violent dynamics of
racialization of the urban space in the historical-political context of a forged postcolonization.
Then, it works with the idea of the sensible city, in which it
discusses the extent to which certain processes of racialization of urban space, in
their many forms and manifestations, forged urban-aesthetic regimes that distribute
places and spaces for existence and circulation of bodies, perceptions, sensations,
objects and subjects in the city. In the third part of the thesis, it analyzes the
interpretations of violence that circulate, produce and inform the management of
urban space in the city of Rio de Janeiro, based on a critical mapping of the field of
knowledge and practices that forge meanings, representations and imaginations
about violence in/and the city. Specifically, the thesis addresses the ways in which
these interpretations produce limits, margins and silences on the relationship
between race, racism, coloniality and violence in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The
final chapter focuses on the imaginations, materialities and experiences of the war
in the city, discussing how the concept of militarization crosses representations
and experiences of the post-colonial city. This part also includes an interpretation
on the counter-knowledge about war in/and the city that is produced daily and
from which it is possible to glimpse insurgent intellectualities and counteraesthetics,
capable of pointing out new meanings and interpretations for the
relations between violence and the configurations of coloniality in the urban space.
By exploring the multiple connections between violence and the city of Rio de
Janeiro, this thesis aims at offering an original theoretical contribution to the field
of International Relations that studies the dynamics of violence within cities in
contexts of post-colonization, arguing for the necessity of building new epistemic
and decolonial possibilities to study the realtions between violence, the city and
(post-)coloniality.

[en] ENVIRONMENTAL RACISM AND 2030 AGENDA: AN ANALYSIS OF THE MUNICIPALITY OF RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] RACISMO AMBIENTAL E AGENDA 2030: UMA ANÁLISE SOBRE O MUNICÍPIO DO RIO DE JANEIRONINA BOUQVAR 18 April 2023 (has links)
mbembiana.
[en] While the impacts of human actions on the planet and climate change are
increasingly present in our daily lives, it is possible to perceive inequalities in the
distribution of the effects and damages caused by this unfriendly relationship
between human beings and nature, with certain segments being more vulnerable
and bearing the heaviest burden and losses. This is not occasional, often connecting
with issues and ills already structured in the dynamics of society and overlapping
with the legacy of marginalization and violence, in a way that perpetuate
inefficiencies and feedback into injustices to their affected groups and territories.
The specific focus given here is in the intersection between the debate on racism
and environmental justice, carried out from the conceptual perspective of
environmental racism, which also dialogues with discussions related to climate
justice and notions such as the Foucaultian biopolitic and the Mbembian
necropolitic. Due to the relevance of its debate and the occurrence of cases in the
global and local spheres, the text seeks to establish relations between the theme and
the influential Agenda for Sustainable Development, the 2030 Agenda, organized
by the UN, tracing and identifying capabilities and limitations for the latter in not
only promoting its coveted goals, but also its ability to connect and result in efforts
to mitigate environmental racism. As a target for analysis, the text investigates some
cases present in the city of Rio de Janeiro of environmental racism and how the
Agenda items, the so-called SDGs, apply.

[pt] MERITOCRACIA E JUSTIÇA SOCIAL: O DEBATE SOBRE AÇÕES AFIRMATIVAS NO BRASIL / [en] MERITOCRACY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE: THE DEBATE ON AFFIRMATIVE ACTION IN BRASILJONAS PEREIRA ARAUJO 30 March 2023 (has links)
e disputadas no Brasil. As principais concepções trabalhadas estiveram
i) princípios libertários, presentes na teoria nozickiana; e ii) princípios welfaristas,
[en] This thesis seeks to understand how different notions of social justice, in
particular those based on meritocratic parameters, are understood and disputed in
Brazil. The main concepts worked on were based on different political or
ideological grammars, such as: i) libertarian principles, present in Nozick s theory;
and ii) welfarist principles, present in Rawlsian theory. The study of the disputes
surrounding the implementation of Affirmative Action (AA) policies in Brazilian
higher education in the early 2000s, demonstrated that the conceptions of social
justice proposed until then were able to explain the main Brazilian debates. The
gravitational center of disagreements with the AA in this period was limited to
efforts to delegitimize racial based quotas. Despite the success of these programs
proven by countless researches in the last decade, like the work that GEMAA/IESPUERJ has carried out, we see today, 20 years after the institutionalization of AA in
Brazil, there are still no major agreements on the pertinence of policies based
exclusively on racial criteria. Finally, the thesis sought to understand this last issue
– the insistence of denying the recognition of Brazilian structural racism – carrying
out the exploratory analysis of an event – the controversy that arose around the
implementation of an exclusive trainee program for black people by the company
Magazine Luiza in 2020 –, with the aim of testing the hypothesis that the
delegitimization of AA with an exclusively racial basis has been a debate dominated
or influenced contemporaneously by arguments and actors linked to the extreme
right, which we managed to prove only provisionally, giving rise to the realization
of future investigations.
