Dual-career couples’ perceptions of career barriersSeptember, Lynn January 2010 (has links)
Magister Commercii - MCom / Research indicates that approximately fifteen years ago there were over three (3) million dualcareer couples representing 20% of dual-worker couples. It is expected that the amount of dual-career couples will continue to increase, as most college students, both men and women, anticipate participating in a career as well as in a family (Spiker- Miller & Kees, 1995).Individuals and organizations are confronted with a hyper turbulent environment and individuals are also faced with a myriad of challenges and adversity in their work and personal lives. Due to the economy and the changing needs of individuals, today very few families reflect the configuration of a typical family (a husband who worked outside the home, a wife who fulfilled the duties of homemaker and child-carer), as both partners are normally employed. The dual-career couple phenomenon has added to the pressure of
managing multiple demands and has a considerable impact on the nature of people's careers(Greenberg & Baron, 2003). Dual-career couples‘ career advancement is largely affected by the career barriers they perceive to encounter. The perceptions of career barriers encountered differ from one couple to another based on factors such as: age, race and parental demand(children). Differences may also exist between partners in a dual-career relationship based on their gender. Most studies that have been conducted have looked at work-life balance of dual-career couples or have focused on the problems dual-career couples face solely from the woman‘s perspective. The aim of this study is to look at dual-career couples not only from female‘s perspective and to tap into their perceptions regarding career barriers encountered in the workplace. The findings could help organisations realize the importance of assisting dualcareer couples and how they could improve their career development. Dual-career couples therefore warrant attention as a special group seeing as the career salience, strategies and transitions of one partner inevitably affects those of the other, which could also have repercussions for their employers (Smith, 1997).A self-developed Demographic Questionnaire and the Career Barriers Inventory (Revised) was used to gather the data. The research was conducted within a large retail organisation.
The sample comprised of men and women, permanent and contract employees within the following departments: Human Resources, Marketing, Logistics, Finance, Group Merchandise Procurement (GMP), Buying, Sourcing, Audit, Planning and Group Services. The sampling procedure that was utilised was non-probability sampling. Statistical analyses involved descriptive statistics (Frequencies, Means and Standard deviations) and inferential statistics (T-Test and Analysis of variance).
The study revealed that the most highly rated career barriers which respondents perceived to experience or which affected their career advancement were multiple-role conflict, decisionmaking difficulties, sex discrimination and racial discrimination. Whilst, the career barriers which were rated the lowest by respondents included disapproval by significant others, disability/health concerns and discouraged from choosing non-traditional careers.Furthermore, the findings indicated that the perceptions of dual-career couples based on gender regarding career barriers in the workplace is partially accepted because there are statistically significant differences regarding the perceptions amongst females and males in
terms of lack of confidence as a career barrier. The hypothesis proposing that there are significant differences in the perceptions of dual-career couples who have and those who do not have children, is partially accepted, as there was a statistically significant difference regarding disapproval by significant others. The findings for the perceptions of dual-career couples based on race regarding career barriers in the workplace is partially supported because significant differences were found for the following career barriers: difficulties with network/socialisation, lack of confidence and race discrimination based on employees‘ race.Lastly, significant differences in the perceptions of dual-career couples based on age regarding career barriers in the workplace was rejected, as no significant differences regarding career barriers based on employees‘ age were found.Amongst others, a limitation of this study is evident. The study may lack generisability as the
sampling procedure used was non-probability sampling and only included those employees who were easily accessible. Additionally, a quantitative study was used by making use of questionnaires, but no observation or interviews were used. The present study also only focuses on the differences in perceptions of dual-career couples, based on biographical factors such as; gender, age, number of children (parental demands), race and age. Ideally all research should have a broad speck of people or participants, to ensure higher generalizability. In an effort to deal with the limitations of the current study, the following are recommended, future research should use a large proportionate stratified random sample as this would allow the findings to be reliably generalised to the population. A combination of both quantitative and qualitative methodology would help to develop detailed understanding of dual-career couple‘s and their differences in perceptions of career barriers. It is important for organisations to have continuous negotiations with employees in order to integrate the demands of the organisation and the career needs of its employees. Furthermore, they should respond to the shifting demographics by adopting voluntary policies such as alternative work schedules and child and elder care assistance to help workers meet family needs, which in turn will be beneficial to the organisation by attracting and retaining the best
talent.

Family supportive benefits and their effect on experienced work-family conflictMaitlen, Alison Anna 01 January 2002 (has links)
The goal of this study was to provide a link between the family-supportive benefits offered by an employer, and the work-family conflict experienced by that organization's employees. In order for employee outcomes such as job satisfaction to remain high, the work-family conflict experienced by the employee needs to remain low. One way to possibly lower the amount of work-family conflict experienced is to offer family-supportive benefits.

You can’t always get what you want, but does it matter? The relationship between prechild preferences and post-child actual labor division fit and well-beingShockley, Kristen M 29 June 2010 (has links)
Significant shifts in social ideology and legislation have brought about considerable changes in work and family dynamics in the Western world, and the male as breadwinner-wife as homemaker model is no longer the norm. However, despite increasingly gender egalitarian ideals, the division of labor among dual-earner couples tends to adopt a "neo traditional" once children are born, where women devote more time to family labor and men spend more time in paid employment
Although asymmetrical divisions of labor have clear workplace and societal consequences in terms of women's earnings, organizational advancement, and inequality, the effects on individual well-being are not well understood. The purpose of the present study was to apply the theoretical lens of person-environment fit to examine how misfit between dual-earner couples' pre-child division of labor preferences and post-child actual divisions of labor relate to affective (career, marital, and family satisfaction) and health-related (depression and physical health symptoms) well-being. Additionally, several conditions were posited to temper the strengths of these relationships (domain centrality, gender, voice in division of labor decision making, and satisfaction with the current division of labor).
Participants were 126 dual-earner couples with small children, and hypotheses were testing using polynomial regression analyses. The results suggested that congruence between an individual's own pre-child desires for the division of paid labor and the actual post-child division of paid labor relates to his/her own career and marital satisfaction, depression, and physical health symptoms. Congruence in the family domain is also important, as desire-division of family labor fit related to affective sentiments toward family and one's spouse. With the exception of career satisfaction, these relationships were curvilinear, such that deviations in either direction from perfect fit related to poorer well-being. On the other hand, there was little evidence for spousal effects, as dual-earner well-being did not relate the congruence between division of labor abilities and spousal demands. Finally, evidence of moderation was only found in a few cases, and none were consistent with prediction, highlighting the need for future research on the contextual conditions of P-E fit in the dual-earner context.

Miljöns roll i utvecklandet och bibehållandet av sydvästsvenska elitidrottares karriärer / The role of the environment in the development and maintenance of southwestern Swedish elite athletes’ careersAndersson, Alice, Nygren, Moa January 2020 (has links)
Elite sport is tied to high demands and the sport milieus are on a constant quest to get new top results and produce new talented athletes to achieve them. According to Systems Theory, no phenomena is to be understood without understanding the context in which it exists. Former research within the Holistic Ecological Approach have relied on this perspective to study how the environment can be formed to develop talented athletes. What has not been studies is elite athletes’ own perceptions of how the characteristics of the environment has contributed to their athletic career, and what characteristics of the environment they find important to be able to continue their elite career. This purpose of this thesis was therefore to investigate this by interviewing 10 elite athletes who compete with the world top athletes in their sport. Each of the participants lived in the south-west of Sweden and represented traditionally individual sports. The thesis concluded that the values of the family and the competition friendly culture of the childhood sports club had been important environmental characteristics in developing the career, together with interactions of key persons and key events. To continue their careers, the participants expressed the importance of a holistic wellbeing through the understanding from all parts of their environment, together with the possibility of equal sparring as most important.

The German Elite Sport Schools (ESS) have been established to support the “dual career“ of junior athletes by offering school education and optimal training conditions. However, present evaluations of ESS argue that the aimed dual efficacy is not achieved. This efficacy is mainly determined by analysing output-based criteria out of a shareholder-perspective, such as completed graduations or medals won. Thus, the structures and processes, on which a high output is based, are not taken into account nor the individual demands of junior athletes regarding the dual promotional system.
The present work is reacting on this situation by performing three empirical studies, which focus on the individual satisfaction of junior athletes in a holistic approach. At first, a Delphi-analysis was performed (N = 40) to identify 20 quality criteria of dual support at the ESS. These criteria were used to develop and validate a standardized questionnaire (AZ-EdS; N = 445) assessing the individual demands of junior athletes regarding the ESS. The questionnaire was used as a base to determine the athlete satisfaction with the ESS and, furthermore, to reveal the weak spots of that support system out of an athlete point of view (N = 445).
The results show, that the athletes judge the support system as overall positive. An elevated importance is ascribed to the structures and processes that are a precondition for the results. However, the results also show a high subjectivity of athlete ratings. Thus, the athlete opinions can be used to reveal weak spots concerning the ESS, but further analyses using objective facts are inevitable.

A quantitative study of girls´ experience of combine sports and studies in national sports education with a focus on footballCostow, Andrea, Libell, Fanny January 2022 (has links)
Sports combined with school have become a part of Swedish society. National Sport Education gives students at secondary school an opportunity to combine school and sports to prepare for both a post-athlete career and current elite sport career. The purpose of this study is to increase knowledge about the sports background of the girls and their motive to study National sport Education. At what extent do the girls feel they had the opportunity to combine sport and education but also how does the girls see their future in sports and if their perception of a sports career has changed during their education. All the data have been collected by a quantitative survey that we sent out to all 301 girls who are final year students at National Sport Education specialized in football in Sweden. 51 girls answered the survey. The results show that the girls overall are satisfied with their education at National Sports Education and thinks the arrangements are good. According to the girls’ thoughts, the goals and expectations of the Swedish Football Association are considered a few of them are achieved. What can be understood after this survey is that girls have great ambitions overall and want to invest more in their football career. Most girls want to continue playing football in some way after high school, with a combination of jobs or studies to have something to fall back on after completing their sports career.

Studentidrottares upplevelser: krav, barriärer, resurser och hantering i deras dubbla karriärer : En kvalitativ intervjustudie / Student-athletes' experiences: demands, barriers, resources and coping in dual careers : A qualitative interview studyTörnblom, Nellie January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to investigate student-athletes' experiences of having a dual career and what demands, barriers and resources they experience and how they manage the demands. The selection was eight student athletes divided into seven women and one man, aged 20-35. The present study had a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews, where the interview guide and the subsequent thematic analysis of the results were based on the Career Transition Model (Stambulova, 2003) and a holistic perspective based on the Holistic athletic career model (Wylleman, 2019). The analysis resulted in four main themes with associated sub-themes and sub-themes. It was the student-athletes' perceived demands, barriers, resources and the student-athletes' effective coping. The results show that the student-athletes experience both internal and external demands where there is a constant focus on high performance, which is perceived as stressful. Internal barriers as well as the external barriers, which are divided into limited time and negative consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic, interact in relation to the perceived resources. The internal assets consist of purposefulness, experience of the combination of studies and sports, and two identities instead of one. The external assets consists of financial support, increased flexibility with distance studies and benefiting from other students. The perceived coping, in turn, contains three different strategies that are used in different ways by the student-athletes to cope with their dual careers. The problem-focused coping involved careful planning to piece together the life puzzle, where the emotion-focused coping dealt with mental and physical recovery, where also avoidant coping was part of the experience.

The Swedish model of elite sports secondary schools consist of Riksidrottsgymnasium, RIG,and National Sports Education Programs, NIU, which offer a training program with specialized sports to student-athletes in order for them to combine sport and study. The underlying philosophy for the model is seen as creating “winners in the long run” in preparingstudent-athletes for a post-athletic career, as well as coping with current demands to optimise development in an elite sporting career. For young student-athletes to successfully combine elite sport and study, it is important tohave a holistic perspective. Previous research in “dual careers” is based on the holistic perspective that describes the importance of a balance between sport, school and private life. The studies point out that the student-athlete has a challenging life situation to manage andit is important for the young student-athlete to feel good to be able to perform both in sportand study. The various research studies are based on and emphasize the sport, the sportenvironments and coaches. They put focus on the importance of the education and theimportance of the holistic perspective of sport, school and private life but do not go into depthhow the teacher's teaching or the student's way of learning should be designed for best results. This discourse analysis is defined as “mathematics at an elite sport secondary school”. The research question which shapes the given discourse reads: “What are the didactic perspectives in the student-athlete's educational environment, especially in mathematics teaching, seen as discourse?” The math teachers and the student-athletes are put into focus and the study investigates how they describe the math education at the RIG-school. The study is based onthe didactic perspective/teaching perspective in the student-athlete's educational environment. Data for the study was collected through interviews with math teachers and a questionnairefor student-athletes, at a RIG-school with approximately 60 student-athletes, during thespring of 2019.In the results of the analysis, the norms of the discourse, highly valued positions and dilemmaappear as five themes: “the important math-subject”, “the good student-athlete”, “thedilemma of the student-athlete's absence”, “strategies for support” and “the ambiguity of theform of the mathematics education”. These findings point to the fact that an ideal image of a successful student-athlete is clearly presented, that the math-subject is valued important and difficult based on its tradition and that the specific study form for mathematics education for student-athletes lacks a clear form. The model that is applied for the mathematics education at the RIG-school can be describedas teacher-led classroom education supplemented with various adaptations to facilitate the student-athletes' self-studies. In this study the discursive analysis also point out the success factors, which are summarized as the student-athletes' high responsibility, motivation and ability to plan and carry out self studies as well as the math teachers' various adaptations and support to facilitate the student athletes' self-studies.

Studentidrottares upplevelser av att kombinera en elitidrottssatsning med högre akademisk utbildning : En kvalitativ studie / Student athletes' experiences of combining elite sports with higheracademic education : A qualitative studyNordborg, Julia January 2023 (has links)
Taking the step into a dual career through a National Sports University or Elite SportsFriendly University means that an elite athlete combines their sport with academic studies. The present study aimed to investigate student-athletes' experiences of having a dual careerand what demands, barriers and resources they experience and how they manage the demands. The qualitative study consisted of eight participants divided into seven women and one man, aged 20–35 (M=24.25) who practiced different sports. The student-athletes' experiences werecollected through semi-structured interviews with an interview guide based on The athletictransition model (Stambulova, 2003) and The holistic athletic career model (Wylleman,2019). The results are summarized through four main themes: student-athletes' perceiveddemands, barriers, resources and effective coping. The results showed that the student-athletesexperienced high internal demands from themselves where they want to succeed and performmaximally in everything they do, which is experienced as stressful. Furthermore, theyexperienced barriers in the form of external barriers, limited time and negative consequencesof the Covid-19 pandemic. Internal assets were determination, experience and external assetsin, among other things, financial support, taking advantage of other students and increasedflexibility with distance learning. Three coping strategies that helped the student-athletes dealwith this combination were problem-focused coping which involved planning,avoidant-coping and finally emotion-focused coping.

Mer än bara idrott : Studentgolfspelares upplevelser och hanteringar av olika scenarier i den dubbla karriären / More than just sports : Student golfer's experiences and coping strategies with scenarios in the dual careerÅkesson, Sebastian January 2023 (has links)
The purpose of the study was to examine studentgolfplayers experiences and coping with different scenarios in their dual career. The study was conducted with a qualitative method and the participants were one female and nine men 20-32 years old (M=25,00, SD=3,79). The interview-guide was semi-structured and developed with the dual career assistance (DCA) framework from Linnér (2021) and also previous research, for example Linnér et al (2021). The data collection was assembled through ten interviews and then analyzed using the thematic analysis small q. Based on the four core-challenges (as reffered to in research as type-scenarios) the result showed that the majority of participants in this study prioritize golf before studies and therefore studies are secondary. Furthermore, the result show that planning, structure and prioritizing were important in everyday life in the dual career to handle the scenarios and be successful. If the participants did not handle their planning, structure and priorities right, stress and bad results in both golf and studies could occur. As support the participants described a flexible school that was helpful and also a flexible and supportive environment around the studentgolfer. Moreover, keeping focus and doing one thing at a time was mentioned to handle the scenarios and it all lead to self-discipline that the participants stated as a crucial competence. The result was discussed related to previous research and the DCA framework and also implications and suggestions for future research were implemented.
