Peeking Out: A Textual Analysis of Heteronormative Images in Prime-Time Television

Smith, D. Renee 01 December 2009 (has links)
This dissertation traces lesbian portrayals on network television from the 1960s through the 1990s. A focus on episodic dramas and situation comedies reveals a concise representation of the mediated lesbian image. Building on existing research on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender images on television, this work focuses exclusively on the lesbian image broadcast free of charge over the air during prime-time on commercial networks in the United States. Using a postmodern feminist framework, this textual analysis examines the images and texts portraying lesbian characters in episodic dramas and situation comedies. Furthermore, applying a semiotic lens to the analysis dissects the voice and actions of lesbian characters illustrating the ways production techniques and narrative scripting work together to represent a lesbian image on television.

Telling the Open Secret: Toward a New Discourse with the U.S. Military’s Don’t Ask Don’t Tell Policy

Reichert, Andrew D. 2010 August 1900 (has links)
This qualitative dissertation in Counseling Psychology considers the open secret, an under-researched phrase describing an interesting phenomenon that is experienced by some, but not all, LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) people when their sexual orientation is known or suspected by family members, friends, and/or coworkers, but not discussed. A review of the literature notes how the essence of the open secret appears to be about knowledge that is not acknowledged, while it may also create a space of grace, allowing people to coexist, where they might not otherwise be able to do so easily. Participants (N = 11) were either current or past members of the U.S. military who served before or during the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy. Interviews were analyzed using James Paul Gee’s linguistic approach to narrative, from which three major findings emerged: (a) sexual and homophobic harassment, whereby historically homophobic attitudes within the military drive the need for secrecy surrounding LGBT sexuality; (b) acceptance and support, whereby the open secret seems to create a space of grace; and (c) empowerment and honesty, whereby LGBT people seem to have a new sense of honesty that empowers them toward a new sense of agency. Discussion includes examination of how the three findings may relate to the open versus secret parts of the open secret, as well as how the open secret and the Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy may represent a gestalt attempt at balance that may now be moving toward a gestalt dynamic of completion, suggesting the possibility of a new Discourse of openness and honesty for LGBT people that appears to be on a proleptic edge of possibility.

The Experiences of Legally Married Same-Sex Couples in California

Falvey, Erin Christine 01 January 2011 (has links)
With the aim of increasing practitioner competence, this dissertation provides marriage and family therapists and mental health service providers with insight into the experiences of legally married same-sex couples. Specifically, the inquiry's objective was to elicit narratives of strength and agency from these couples who navigated the oppressive circumstances of an anti-gay amendment campaign situated within the debate over the extension of marriage rights to same-sex couples. Fourteen couples were interviewed in order to respond to the dissertation's overriding question: How do the lesbian and gay couples and families who are among those who were legally married in California before the passage of Proposition 8 narrate their experiences of their marriages? Through portraiture (Lawrence-Lightfoot & Davis, 1997), a method of inquiry situated within a postmodern, social constructionist framework, a narrative was produced which evolved through five emergent themes: 1) Our Commitments Have Rich Histories -- the symbolic and legal ways in which these couples commemorated and brought definition to their commitments, in the absence of a nationally-sanctioned and collectively-recognized state of legal marriage; 2) Not a Simple Matter: The Complexities of Language Choice -- their contextual language choices, which reflected the absence of representative and collectively-recognized language options for their relationships after their legal marriages; 3) The Battle Metaphor -- the couples' experiences of California's political debate over the extension of marriage rights to same-sex couples; 4) Support Shaped Lived Experiences -- the impact of support from friends, family, and community; and lastly, 5) Legal Marriage Shaped Individual, Relational, and Social Identities -- individual, relational and social shifts that occurred for the couples through the experience of being legally married. A follow-up focus group further validated the theme Support Shaped Lived Experiences, and examined more deeply the tensions that occurred when important persons were silent about and/or did not recognize the legitimacy of the couples' legal marriages, and/or the discriminatory context in which their legal marriages were situated. In addition to its contribution of the experiences of legally married same-sex couples to the family therapy literature, the dissertation concludes with important implications for affirmative therapeutic practice, research, education, training, advocacy, and social policy.

Ämnesintegrerad sex- och samlevnad i bildämnet. : En studie ur ett normkritiskt perspektiv. / Interdisciplinary sex education in art. : A study through a critical perspective.

Persson, Annette January 2013 (has links)

The present study aimed to analyze the national policy of integral attention to the health of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite and transsexual-LGBT population, in the scope of basic attention, as a guarantee of the right to health and expression of social justice. This is an investigative, descriptive and analytical study. The qualitative approach was used for the treatment of the results, from the speeches of the research subjects. With this aim the theory of the comprehensive and technical sociology of the speech of the collective subject of the professionals of the health teams and of the LGBT population was taken as base. To do so, interviews were conducted with health professionals and workshops with the LGBT population, in the cities of Campo Grande-MT, João Pessoa-PB and Vitória-ES. The analysis of the reports allowed to identify the indicative themes of invisibility and prejudice to the LGBT population. It also made it possible to infer the fragility of basic care professionals in the act of caring for people. In addition, the lack of knowledge and lack of implementation of the national LGBT policy was evidenced. It was verified that the health care is neither equitable nor integral, lacking to be inclusive and sensitive to the differences in the Family Health Units. This work defends integrality as a value to be adopted in professional practices. This completeness must be expressed in the way individual and institutional subjects should respond to the needs and expectations of users seeking health services. The guarantee of rights is only effective in the daily struggles of the individuals involved. Permanent education should be adopted as a strategy for qualifying management, care, training and social participation practices within the Unified Health System.

Menezes, Moisés Santos de 16 February 2017 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / Homophobic violence is a complex and quite common phenomenon in contemporary society. Such reality is constantly fueled by the processes of revictimization, underreporting and impunity in dealing with homophobia. All this context is frequently present during the professional care of the LGBT population in the various organs of protection and promotion of their human and sexual rights. The present situation becomes a challenge for the Social Service because it is a profession that seeks the viability of Rights for all its users, being the demands of sexual diversity and gender problematic that permeate all social spaces needing a humanized service capable of enabling and not revitalizing these subjects. In order to better understand this context, the present study aims to analyze the perceptions of Social Service professionals regarding the care of the professional category in cases of homophobic violence against the LGBT population in Sergipe. The research was carried out with 10 (ten) social workers who attended LGBT victims of cases of homophobic violence in the various public policies in Sergipe. The data were collected through a semi-structured interview script, and analyzed through the content analysis technique. Among the main results, it has been shown that Social Service professionals are not prepared and able to meet the demands of sexual and gender diversity, due to several factors such as: 1) the absence and / or lack of debates about this issue in their process Of academic and professional formation 2) presence of prejudice and discrimination strongly presented in the discourses of these subjects 3) disengagement or lack of accountability of the Brazilian State in dealing with homophobia among others. To the detriment of this context, the attention of social service professionals to the demands of the LGBT population has been more focused on the field of revictimization than on the viability of their human and sexual rights, a scenario that reinforces a conservative and fundamentalist tendency of the professional category, Contradictory to its Ethical-Political Project. Therefore, this research made it clear an urgent need to discuss themes on sexual and gender diversity within Social Work, as well as to carry out new studies on the subject matter in this area, as well as to promote prevention and awareness-raising activities for social workers in Relation to the confrontation of homophobic violence as one of the expressions of the social issue to which everyone is entitled to fight.
