No. of bitstreams: 1 tesejares.pdf: 8776360 bytes, checksum: d45e6fec7d909bdeb4e41690fb626131 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2012-07-03 / Distance education has been gaining attention in recent years due to the capacity of expansion of under graduation education and also to including a group of people who otherwise could not hold a degree. The objective of this research was to identify variables that influence the process of permanence of Administration Business students, comparing results of distance education to presential education, and taking the State University of Maranhão (Uema) as a case to be studied. As the main theoretical framework of this study, we chose the Student Integration Model of Tinto (1975), considered the first academically recognized proposal for determining the variables that interfere in the process of evasion and retention of students in an undergraduate course. One component of the model captured the interest of comparing the two modalities (presential and distance one) in a special way: social integration, as a result from interactions among students and professors, who are generally poorly explored in empirical studies. The method defined for the study was descriptive with a qualitative basis. The submission of all the variables observed in the literature to an analysis of judges resulted in the definition of three main dimensions and 60 components, namely: (1) Profile of the student, (2) Being in network; and Conditions for permanence. These variables formed the framework for analysis of categorical content, resulting from the application of multiple data collection instruments (two questionnaires and an in-depth interview) that were used in triangulation with secondary data obtained in the actual Enade (2009). As a theoretical contribution of this thesis, it is noted three possibility of integration of three philosophical views: Cognitivism, Constructivism and Connectivism that are interrelated in the management of academic degree courses by the uniqueness of education envisioned by the blended learning as the future trend for higher education. Other contributions are presented in relation to components: individual attributes, work and training, family background, schooling, previous use of ICTs, professors and students interaction, personal commitment and institutional and academic integration.

City Principles: The Application of the Four Visual Characteristics on Helena, Mt

Cullen, Cienna 01 January 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The larger architectural context of cities must be understood in order to effectively design buildings. If a building ignores its surroundings, it will not hold up to time and will adversely affect the city in which it stands. This can be seen in multiple of disarrayed cities and their commercial-driven building inventory. So, what makes a good city stand out, and how can this be applied to buildings? There are the four basic principles designers and planners seemed to have forgotten. The first is the layout of basic city components and their influence on current and future identity. The second is the aesthetic principles of scale and proportion. Choosing appropriate material permanence to your location is also important because it enhances or subtracts from the city’s identity. And finally, the experience of the observer must be impactful. If these principles are applied correctly and harmoniously, they can effectively heal the conflicting issues of transportation, pedestrian access, social venues, historic reverence and much more. But most importantly, they can be applied to buildings. Buildings can individually initiate the healing of an urban fabric if they are cognizant to their surroundings. Therefore in this thesis, I want to apply these four basic principles in the rehabilitation of a malfunctioning junction in my hometown of Helena, Montana. By designing a singular building with a guiding master plan, I hope to stimulate a chain reaction. This transformation would take the current issues and interweave these principles into an effective solution that will not only revitalize the area but also become a tourist destination.

Exploring the sensitivity of Biometric Data: A Comparative Analysis of Theoretical and Human Perspectives

Jose, Dayona January 2024 (has links)
Biometric technology, leveraging distinctive physiological or behavioral traits for identification, has transformed authentication methods. This thesis explores biometric data sensitivity from theoretical and human perspectives. Theoretical analysis examines factors like uniqueness, permanence, and potential misuse, while empirical research surveys societal attitudes towards biometric sensitivity. Discrepancies between theoretical constructs and real-world perceptions underscore the complexity of this issue. Privacy, security, and trust emerge as central concerns, emphasizing the need for comprehensive approaches in biometric technology development and policy-making. The discussion interprets survey findings, highlighting implications for stakeholders. Future research could explore cultural influences on biometric perceptions, conduct longitudinal studies, and investigate innovative solutions to privacy and security concerns. Collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers is crucial for advancing biometric technology ethically and responsibly in an increasingly digital world.

La permanence de l'objet : une analyse de l'identité spatio-temporelle et intersubjective des objets / Object permanence : an analysis of objects' spatiotemporal and intersubjective identity

Gabaret, Jim 12 November 2018 (has links)
The understanding of the ordinary objects of our daily experience implies a definition of spatiotemporal and intersubjective levels of permanence. This is due to the fact that these objects, whose existence we defend against eliminativism and mereological nihilism, can be said to endure or perdure, at least in our experiences and our discourses about them. This existence in time and space and between subjects of experience cannot be defined by mere logical features. That is why we choose a contextualist approach of objects, and study perceptual situations where identifications and categorizations occur, especially at the early stages of objectification and objectivation which babies are able to achieve. The newborn and the young child indeed need to gain object permanence, a phenomenon first described by Gestalt psychologists like Michotte and Piaget's school of developmental psychology, and which has been even more accurately studied by cognitive psychologists such as Elizabeth Spelke, Dominique Baillargeon, Susan Carey or Susan Gelman. We defend the thesis that three types of object permanence can be distinguished (perceptual, social and logical-linguistic). Object transcendence can be described as an emergent feature of these stages. Babies acquire these levels of objectivity through normal and universal phases of development, even though different cultural environments can influence rhythms of maturation and the intentional behaviors relating to objects, which children develop. To access ordinary objects, infants need natural concepts (affordantial concepts and innate modular abilities - quite common among animals -, which are embodied and developed through social stimulations), experiential concepts (prototypical and essentialist tendencies, stimulated by joint attention and social phenomena that also occur in the animal world), and inherited lexical concepts. Nativism and constructivism work together and a realist, naturalist and emergentist approach of our cognitions of objects and their representations (understood only as a functional ability to register distal objects from proximal stimuli) enables us to overcome classical oppositions between direct and indirect realism, conceptualism and anti-conceptualism, as well as the continuity-thesis and the discontinuity-thesis between human and non-human beings.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Patricia Silva Gomes.pdf: 1071079 bytes, checksum: e406874e42c8d301fb8ad4a1b18b2083 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-03-18 / Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The main objective of this research is to present and analyze the process of population aging in Brazil and its consequences on the labor market and public employment policies. It was adopted the literature, and used as sources of empirical data the statistics provided by the United Nations (UN), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). First, it is concluded that in Brazil there are not specific labor public policies for the elderly. Although the guidelines for labor public policy (or employment) for the elderly in Brazil are set out in legal documents, outside the social security field, there is not government action aimed at changing the level of employment among older people, or actions that let his stay or return to the labor market. The labor public policies for older people can mitigate the negative effects of the considered population aging on the labor market, similar to what already occurs in OECD countries, and allow the permanence and rehabilitation of elderly in the Brazilian labor market. It also concludes that Brazil is experiencing the called demographic dividend (relative increase in the economically active population), i.e. the lowest dependency ratio. Therefore, this is the best time to implement the labor public policies suggested. Finally, the government and society must not allow this opportunity is missed / O objetivo principal deste trabalho é apresentar e analisar o processo de envelhecimento populacional no Brasil e as suas consequências no mercado de trabalho e nas políticas públicas de emprego.

A critical analysis of the debate between Derrida and Searle

Gardfors, Johan January 2009 (has links)

The essay seeks to clarify some of the decisive but often obscured issues in the famous debate between Jacques Derrida and Jonn F. Searle. The debate commenced in 1977 with the publication in Glyph of Derrida’s lecture Signature Event Context from -71, followed by Searle’s Reiterating the Differences. A Reply to Derrida and subsequently Derrida’s reply Limited Inc a b c … which encouraged Searle to renew his criticism. I situate the debate within a philosophical context where questions of the aim of philosophy and the nature of philosophical writing cannot be excluded from the specific topics that are being discussed. Starting from Derrida’s controversial reading of Austin, where a few key points of criticism are placed under scrutiny, I proceed to problems of writing and communication where special attention is paid to the concept of iterability and Searle’s remark that this has been confounded with permanence in Derrida’s exposition. The concept of ”writing” is examined as a crux in the understanding of the two philosophers. And iterability is then found to be derieved from the theorization of absence in relation to that very concept. Iterability designates an essential possibility of absence and implies the possibility of every mark to be grafted onto new contexts of significance. Thus it draws the consequences of a general repeatability, within which difference is underscored as the inevitable outcome. The last section of the essay relates to the phenomenological project of investigating the genesis of idealization and traces the emergence of iterability in Derrida’s further writings on Husserl, where repetition can be perceived of as constitutive for ideality and thus for identity. Bearing on this observation, the type/token-distinction, proposed by Searle to undo the problem of iterability, is subjected to further inquiry and linked to the process of idealization, within which iterability is revealed to have a temporal relevance that also affects the notion of permanence. The claim is then made that iterability should be understood as a fundamentally ambiguous phenomenon through its dual relation to identity and difference. Its utility is found to be hinged upon the status of the possible. Finally, the question of iterability as concept is posed, which entails its interdependence upon notions of dissemination and différance.

In order to have this permanence and continuety in rural activity, the qualification allows, while social construction, an interaction between the elements involved, namely, the environment and people. Qualify means not only prepare them to cope with new technologies, but, educate them, teach them how to search for knowledge, in order to improve their action in activity and the environment in which they live. For the remaining it is needed the use of the qualification of the young farmer, to aggregate value to their activities, clearly and with the knowledge. An instrument for this knowledge occurs, is the Rural Family House (Casa familiar Rural) a helper in the decision to remain, the theoretical knowledge taught in addition to the practice helps the young farmer to learn accordingly to his own reality. In this way, to continue their activity, it is necessary, to learn and chase the activity diversification. For this learning becomes a qualification, the young farmer needs to be always constantly novitiate, that is, be looking for knowledge that promotes the activity and prepares for the work in rural property. With the qualification, the permanence becomes an activity able to bring benefits for the young farmers and also for their families, as well as enhances the family agriculture, therefore, the sector is responsible for food security in the country, that is, the basic food consumed by Brazilians. Denoting with it, the family farming shows a capacity of generation of income, and represents 75% of hand-to-work used in the field. Therefore, for this analysis, family farming, the permanence of the young farmer in the field and its relationship with the qualification, reflects the reality of the process.
