(Re)make stone Minerals are separated and melted out of the ground at a tremendous rate. They are transformed to be everywhere in our everyday lives, in the buildings around you, in the food you eat, in the supplements and medicines you take and in the smartphone in your hand. For every mineral based artifact you see, there's an even bigger hole in the ground. I have mined the minerals from our surroundings: Manure, dyes, stainless steel, makeup, insulation, deodorant, pesticides, porcelain, preservatives, salt, anti-lump agents, concrete, silicon and more. I want to build a relationship and get to know, go from static products and materials and start mixing, burning, dissolving and merging. Let it react and become stone again. I hope my project can contribute to a broader understanding, new questions and discussions about what the minerals we have around us once were, are and can be.

Mitt kandidatarbete är en teknikstudie där jag grottat ner mig i keramikens geologiska ursprung. I arbetet har jag utgått ifrån magmatiska och metamorfa bergarter som granit och gnejs. De innehåller kvarts, fältspat och glimmer i perfekta proportioner för att redan vara färdiga keramiska glasyrer. Jag har sedan provat att tillsätta lermineralet kaolin för att göra egna stengodsleror utifrån två äldre recept på parian och porslin. Genom att själv krossa och mala sten vill jag synliggöra alla moment som kan ingå i framställningen av lera samt medvetandegöra den fysiska närheten till materialet. / My work is a technique study with focus on the geological origin of ceramics. I have examined magmatic and metamorphic rocks such as granites and gneiss. They consist of minerals like quartz, feldspar and mica in perfect proportions to already be a “ready-made” ceramic glaze, if grinded down to powder. With an ancient Chinese recipe of how to make porcelain I’ve tried to make my own clay version using granite and gneiss, adding the clay mineral kaolin. Using a technique where I crush and grind the stones into powder by hand, my wish is to visibility all of the different parts that takes place in the making of clay and bring to awareness how physically close we often aren't, but could be, to the origin of the material. / <p>Opponent: Jelena Rundqvist</p>

This dissertation investigates how a symmetrical approach to archaeology can be applied to identify the properties and effects of the non-living, abiotic materials. And to reconfigure the relationship between humans and non-human objects, bridging the divide between what has been termed ‘cultural’ and ‘natural’ and thus placed in different ontological realms. This is examined by studying the practices surrounding “boulder graves”, from the Late Bronze Age - Early Iron Age (approx. 1000 – 0 BC) in Kättsta, Ärentuna parish in Uppland, Sweden. The boulders tend to be studied from an anthropocentric point of view, in which they are seen primarily as passive objects, interpreted only for what they represent. The objective of this research, however, is to gain new insights into the agency of boulders, and how they contributed to the practices carried out adjacent to them. The dissertation is based on a case study where a thematic analysis is performed, focusing on the properties and characteristics of boulders, their affordances, the distribution of finds and their interrelations, and the effects their relations generated. The results show that the boulders themselves contributed in human-stone relations and were vital in the formation of the grave-like features they became part of. It is argued that a symmetrical, non-anthropocentric approach to these features will broaden our view on materialities in the past, affording ontological as well as ecological implications.

Konst och kartläggning kring 1970 : Modell, diagram och karta i konstens landskap / Art and Mapping around the year of 1970 : Maps, Models, and Diagrams in the Artistic LandscapeUggla, Karolina January 2015 (has links)
The years around 1970 saw the emergence of an artistic fascination with maps and mapping. In the present thesis this fascination is conceptualised as a mapping impulse, acknowledging how the discourses of art and mapping, respectively, intertwine and merge. The aim of the study is to analyse this mapping impulse and to identify recurring themes and concepts in artworks and texts on art where maps and mapping processes are used as a visual expression and method. In order to demonstrate how the scope of the thesis is shaped by later interpretations of art from around 1970, three exhibition publications from three decades are examined to illustrate how boundaries between the discourses of art and of mapping are renegotiated from the late 1960s up until the 2010s. The representing line of the map is analysed via the concepts of diagrams, maps, and models, such as the re-appearance of Claude Shannon’s and Warren Weaver’s Communication Model in the Swedish late 1960s, Öyvind Fahlström’s World Map (1972), and Sten Eklund’s paintings on glass from 1968 where he transfers ideas from Wittgenstein’s Tractatus into visual representations. The procedural aspects of encounters between the discourses of art and of mapping from around 1970 are analysed in Hans Haacke’s Gallery-Goers’ Birthplace and Residence Profile Pt. 1 and Sten Eklund’s Kullahusets hemlighet (The Secret of Kullahuset). The latter work is interpreted in the light of the role of the mapping, surveying individual, and in a figurative sense, the individual in the system. Here, the concept of alienation is used, as the work delineates the mapping subject who itself is being subject to mapping. In this thesis the mapping impulse is identified as a way to deal with territory and truth in Western art around 1970. The map as a sign system and a practice is representative of a recent stage where art in various ways deal with a world undergoing rapid change. The mapping impulse circa 1970 can be identified as a visual regime of cartographic reason, characterized by legibility, clarity and lucidity. This also suggests alternative interpretations of the impact of the linguistic turn in the art of the 1960s and early 1970s, revealing a more ambiguous relationship between text and image.

How can we live and work with craft as people in an age of global climate crisis? What must we change in order to work empathically and in harmony with our surrounding world? While not in need to actively ensure our survival, it is easy for us to forget to stay humble to our own needs, thus taking our lives and our surroundings for granted. We forget our bodies and we forget the bodies of others, animals and objects alike. We forget that we need each other in order to become. This text is a complementary exploration in how awareness of the soul, body and Spirit may help bring back a balance that we've lost in town based cultures of the west. I am looking for balance as I twist fibre into thread and into rope and as I suspend rock- and human bodies into temporary sculptures. I look for inspiration in phenomenologist thought, alchemy, shamanism and daoism, as well as in the active making of craft and art. My work centers around telling stories, crafting and material exploration as well as bodily awareness and performance. In the work, body and material are synonymous concepts drifting in and out of each other, enabling and shaping each other, becoming together. I am looking to meet my surroundings not always on my own terms, but by changing, adapting and compromising myself. This helps bring an awareness that unites me with the bodies around me, placing me not above but amidst constant becomings.

I mitt projekt utvecklar jag konstnärliga designmetoder för att studera, samla in och berätta om kvinnohistoria och interiörhistoria, inspirerat av feministiska och queerteoretiska perspektiv på temporalitet, identitet, historia, material och berättande. Mitt examensarbete utgår från min 90-åriga mormors berättelser om sina barndomsminnen av hennes två mormödrar ‘Momma’ och ‘Mormor’ och hur det var att spendera somrarna på deras gård, Fridhem. I formgivning av bordet Fridhem, tavlan Systrar på gungbräda i trädgården, installationen Flytande fragment och installationen av dessa under Konstfacks Vårutställning 2021 tillsammans med ljudverket Minnen från Momma och Mormors Fridhem, manifesterar jag studierna och berättelsen.

This paper deals with village history around millstone quarry Eastern Utsjö in Malung, Sweden, in the hope of finding deposits that could date the quarry, in that the quarry in the current situation is dated only by the millstone fragments outside the resort. My purpose was to conduct a discussion on the quarry alone can be dated by deposits outside the resort. I have used FMIS RAÄ:s fornsök and a lot of literature to identify village history. The results showed that it is not possible to date the millstone quarry from village history, but through deposits outside the resort of Malung, which have been found around Mälardalen, Sweden through archaeological excavations, and derived from the millstone quarry Eastern Utsjö, can put an age on the quarry.

What factors are influencing domestic purchasers in their purchase of imported low-involvement products due to the products' country-of-origin? : - A case study of a natural stones importerLogardt, Ulrika January 2014 (has links)
The author has applied an abductive research design and performed a case study which includes a survey and e-mail interviews of workers within the construction industry. The purpose of the survey and the interviews is to investigate what factors may be the most influential for individuals in establishing their apprehension of natural stones. The research has been made on commission of the case firm which is a natural stones importer located in Sweden and the survey is based on the 17-point CETSCALE originally created by Shimp and Sharma in 1987. The survey was sent to workers with different occupations (architects, contractors and purchasers) within the construction industry who encounter natural stones in their work. Therefore, the theoretical purpose of this study is to contribute to increase the knowledge of country-of-origin effects of imported low-involvement products. The research gap this study aims to fill is to outline what factors are influencing consumers' purchasing behavior on purchasing low-involvement products. The practical purpose of this study is to provide the case firm with more knowledge of the phenomenon of negative COO-effects. Theories on ethnocentrism have been included since ethnocentric tendencies among customers have been considered by previous researchers as one of the contributing factors of fostering negative country-of-origin perceptions. The case firm can implement this knowledge in creating a more effective marketing strategy and thereby develop their operation domestically as they wish to do. Empirical findings of this study demonstrate that cognitive influence is the factor with the largest influence on country-of-origin effects while factors such as familiarity and environmental concerns are less influencing. The author recommends future researchers to further investigate this phenomenon, especially to investigate its connection to cognitive- and other psychosocial factors in order to gain a more solid understanding for why problems related to this phenomenon arise and how they may be encountered. Since Corporate Social Responsibility was demonstrated to be the most influencing factor in consumers’ purchasing decisions of this study, it is suggested to future researchers to investigate the phenomenon of country-of-origin in relation to ethical- and moral standards of individuals.
