This thesis aims to identify what is innovative in the recently created Museum of Tomorrow (MT) as a science museum, specifically as a contemporary proposal for scientific dissemination. The research is structured as follows. In the theoretical section we consider changes in the approaches on the relationship between science and public, pointing to the current tendency to consider the public as a prominent actor in the activities of scientific dissemination. Next, we consider the historical transformations of the museums of science and the attempts to classify them in specific types of museums, a review that points to the strengthening of the concept of education for the general public. The following section, on the context of the public communication of science and museums in Brazil, reveals efforts to institutionalize this research field, its educational role, as well as the identification of scientific interests and needs of the population revealed by the various researches carried out. The subsequent description of the Museum of Tomorrow and the analysis of its museological proposal show its great repercussion, as well as its emphasis on the promotion of meetings between social actors (people and organizations) in an environment that contributes to discussions, raising ideas and projects for the future of humanity that will subsidize decisions contributing to minimize the consequences of the Anthropocene. The main empirical focus of the thesis - the interviews with the MT idealizers, as well as education managers - reveals what they consider as innovation in the MT and as its proposal of public communication in science. In the perspective of the idealizers, the various inspirations that gave origin to the museum and their appreciation of the educational role of the museum seeking behavioural changes - of the visitor and of the public in general towards the environment - are highlighted. In the speeches of education managers, proposals, actions and challenges related to communication with the multiplicity of publics stand out, as well as their efforts aimed at attracting and valuing the participation of members of the surrounding neighbourhood, a region of historical tradition and specific social and cultural needs.

Impacts of Driving Patterns on Well-to-wheel Performance of Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles

Raykin, Leonid 27 November 2013 (has links)
The well-to-wheel (WTW) environmental performance of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) is sensitive to driving patterns, which vary within and across regions. This thesis develops and applies a novel approach for estimating specific regional driving patterns. The approach employs a macroscopic traffic assignment model linked with a vehicle motion model to construct driving cycles, which is done for a wide range of driving patterns. For each driving cycle, the tank-to-wheel energy use of two PHEVs and comparable non-plug-in alternatives is estimated. These estimates are then employed within a WTW analysis to investigate implications of driving patterns on the energy use and greenhouse gas emission of PHEVs, and the WTW performance of PHEVs relative to non-plug-in alternatives for various electricity generation scenarios. The results of the WTW analysis demonstrate that driving patterns and the electricity generation supply interact to substantially impact the WTW performance of PHEVs.

Dynamic Speed Adaptation for Curves using Machine Learning / Dynamisk hastighetsanpassning för kurvor med maskininlärning

Narmack, Kirilll January 2018 (has links)
The vehicles of tomorrow will be more sophisticated, intelligent and safe than the vehicles of today. The future is leaning towards fully autonomous vehicles. This degree project provides a data driven solution for a speed adaptation system that can be used to compute a vehicle speed for curves, suitable for the underlying driving style of the driver, road properties and weather conditions. A speed adaptation system for curves aims to compute a vehicle speed suitable for curves that can be used in Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) or in Autonomous Driving (AD) applications. This degree project was carried out at Volvo Car Corporation. Literature in the field of speed adaptation systems and factors affecting the vehicle speed in curves was reviewed. Naturalistic driving data was both collected by driving and extracted from Volvo's data base and further processed. A novel speed adaptation system for curves was invented, implemented and evaluated. This speed adaptation system is able to compute a vehicle speed suitable for the underlying driving style of the driver, road properties and weather conditions. Two different artificial neural networks and two mathematical models were used to compute the desired vehicle speed in curves. These methods were compared and evaluated.
