Práce s ilustrací v mateřské škole jako podpora porozumění předčítanému textu / Working with illustration in kindergarten as a support of reading comprehension

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of work with illustration in kindergarten as support to understanding a text that is read aloud. The aim is to design and verify methods of working with illustrations in kindergarten that support the understanding of a text that is read aloud to preschool children. In the theoretical part of the thesis, I deal with illustration, visual literacy, method of working with a book, understanding a text (read aloud) and the characteristics of preschool children with regard to the topic of the thesis. Subsequently, I apply this knowledge in the practical implementations. In the practical part, I propose and verify methods of working with illustration in kindergarten which should support the understanding of a text that is read aloud to preschool children. The thesis is focused on qualitative research in which I compared differences between research and experimental group sample. First, I tested the level of skill of all twenty children when working with illustrations and understanding of a text read aloud (both research and experimental group samples). The approaches that foundation phase grade 3 teachers use to promote effective literacy teaching : a case study

The changing role of literacy in primary education, with its emphasis on the acknowledgement of the learner’s values, beliefs, culture, background and language is the focus of this study. The research was concerned with understanding the literacy practices of Foundation Phase Grade 3 teachers who are able to intentionally promote and mediate literacy acquisition among their learners. A qualitative design was used to describe the approaches of effective literacy teachers. The research study discovered that while the teachers made use of a number of teaching methods that underpinned a de-contextualised and constructivist approach, a socio-cultural approach to literacy was lacking. The results call for a broadening of the definition of literacy; one that acknowledges the socio-cultural background of the learners in developing a literacy disposition that prepares learners for a changing world. / Educational Studies / M. Summaries in Afrikaans and English / The transformative mission of the White Paper on Education (1995: 19) states that the South African education system is moving towards a single, national, non-racial system where all people are offered equil opportunities. Demographic and other changes make particular demands on the education system. The HSRC (1987:54) claim that distance edcation is increasingly viewed as a possible solution for educational problems. The literature study aims to motivate, from an andragogic-didactical perspective, the use of two-dimensional silent images in study material. A literature study was also undertaken on the perception of silent images and the elements involved in the perception of depth, movement, size, colour, etc., from which certain didactic guidelines were deducted with a view to the design of silent images. The ability of distance education students to identify the elements above, was emperically researched. The validity of the didactic guidelines were verified in this phase. / Die transformatiewe missie van die Witskrif vir Onderwys (1995: 19) stel dit dat die Suid-Afrikaanse onderwysstelsel oorgaan na 'n "enkele nasionale, nie-rassige stelsel" waar daar gelyke geleenthede vir aile mense gebied word. Framing Education : Doing Comics Literacy in the Classroom

Interest in comics as Swedish school material has risen in the last few years and the publication of comics for children and adolescents has also increased. Meanwhile, although research around new literacies has taken an interest in combinations of image and text, there is still little research on comics as a literacy material, especially as part of school practices. With comics’ rise in popularity, and their quality as examples of new literacies, this points to the relevance of exploring how meaning making with comics is done in schools. The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge on how locally situated literacy practices are done, practices in which pupils and teachers make meaning with comics. The study combines literacy, comics and discursive psychology to investigate aspects of literacy not as individual, inner workings, but as part of participants’ social constructions, in line with New Literacy Studies. With this perspective, it is possible to investigate literary concepts such as narrative, and participants’ construction of story elements, through the way in which these aspects are utilized by participants to construct social action – what participants do with their utterances. To study this, video recordings have been made in one primary and one secondary school, in two different Swedish cities. The results of the study show constructions of a comics literacy, where participants engage with both visual and textual aspects of the material and negotiate focalization of narrative perspective and construction of narrative structure as well as narrative devices such as speech and thought bubbles. Furthermore, meaning making of comics literacy also includes the construction of discourses around comics as a specific type of story telling, either for material or literary reasons. The thesis discusses how participants construct classroom literature, and provides insight into how interaction around comics enables participants to construct and negotiate discourses around what comics literacy is and what it enables, as well as how to talk about, create, and read comics. / Intresset för serier som svenskt skolmaterial har stigit de senaste åren och publiceringen av serier för barn och ungdomar har också ökat. Även om forskning om new literacies har intresserat sig för kombinationer av bild och text så finns det fortfarande lite forskning på serier som literacymaterial, speciellt som en del av skolpraktik. Med det stigande intresset för serier och deras kvaliteter som exempel på new literacies, så pekar detta mot att det finns en relevans i att utforska hur meningsskapande med serier görs i skolan. Syftet med denna studie är att bidra med kunskap om hur lokalt situerad literacypraktik görs där elever och lärare skapar mening med serier. Studien kombinerar forskning om literacy, serier och diskursiv psykologi för att, i linje med New Literacy Studies, undersöka aspekter av literacy som en del av deltagarnas sociala konstruktioner – inte som ett individuellt, mentalt fenomen. Med detta perspektiv är det möjligt att undersöka litterära koncept som narrativ och deltagares konstruktion av berättelseinslag, genom det sätt på vilka dessa aspekter används av deltagare för att interagera – vad deltagare gör när de säger något. För att studera detta har videoobservationer använts i en lågstadieskola och en högstadieskola i två olika svenska städer. Resultaten från studien demonstrerar konstruktioner av serie-literacy där deltagarna engagerar sig i både text och bild i materialet, diskuterar berättandeperspektiv och konstruktioner av narrativ struktur, såväl som berättarverktyg, t.ex. prat- och tankebubblor. Därutöver inkluderar serie-literacy också deltagarnas skapande av seriediskurser där serier görs till en specifik typ av berättande, antingen på materiell eller litterär basis. Avhandlingen diskuterar hur deltagare konstruerar klassrumslitteratur, och studien erbjuder en insikt i hur interaktion runt serier möjliggör för deltagare att konstruera och förhandla diskurser om vad serieliteracy är och vad det erbjuder för möjligheter, såväl som hur deltagare kan prata om, skapa och läsa serier.

Den svenska skolans undervisning i det svenska språket har för avsikt att göra eleverna narrativt kompetenta, det vill säga, de ska kunna förstå och skapa berättande texter. Inom läroplanen finns dock en öppning för ett mer vidgat textbegrepp där det inkluderas visuell litteracitet, att eleverna exempelvis ska kunna förstå filmiska berättelser. Denna studies syfte är att undersöka på vilka sätt mellanstadieelever kan arbeta med en dokumentär filmberättelse om fyra skolbarn för att utveckla sina förmågor att skriva berättelser och vidga sina vyer av omvärlden. Begreppet narrativ fantasi, myntat av den amerikanska filosofen Martha C. Nussbaum, är framträdande i undersökningen. Med det menas en slags förmåga till inlevelse, att läsandet av olika texter vidgar läsarens förståelse för sin omvärld. Eleverna är uppmanade att välja karaktär och typ av berättelse. Genom både kvalitativ och kvantitativ textanalys visar deras berättelser på en varierad, men ändå utbredd narrativ fantasi. Denna förmåga är dock beroende av både visuell litteracitet, att förstå filmen, och narrativ kompetens, att skapa en egen berättelse.

Representative form and the visual ideograph : the Obama "Hope" poster

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / In this study, Janis Edwards and Carol Winkler’s method, based on Michael McGee’s ideograph, is applied to non-discursive forms in order to understand the extent to which these images can be understood as a representative form functioning ideographically. Artifacts for analysis include the 2008 Shepard Fairey Obama “PROGRESS” and “HOPE” images, related campaign graphics, and parodies, political and non-political, humorous and serious. Literature on visual rhetoric, the ideograph, and extensions of McGee’s ideograph to visual forms was reviewed. When the method was applied to the artifacts, the Obama “HOPE” image was found to be an example of a representative form. Additionally, the representative form was demonstrated to function ideographically in the parodied examples analyzed in this thesis. Opportunities for further study on the visual ideograph and additional artifacts were proposed.

The Shades of Styles : A human search for words communicating all aspects of styles.

This research is an investigative attempt on the concept of style´s development to potentially noticing our diverse human history on viewing the aspect of styles, starting (in the part one) by looking into the problem of the development of styles and its characteristic of representation in terms of its messages, realties, semiotics, and human collaboration. Leading towards the human search in seeing style more commonly neutral for a more meaningful dialog. The research shows then (in the part two) the potential to build a Digital Style Dictionary and A Digital Visual Compass: A Human-Centric Guide on The Aspect of Seeing Reality’s that can support identifying aspects of multiple realities (core reality, abstract reality, surreal reality and artificial reality) — where two cases (in the part three) of visual styles get analyzed, discussed, reframed, and presented (Transpace and Swisch). Fundamentally this paper looks to provoke a discussion on what we humans want the point to be in seeing styles. The complexity is as grand as our diversity, but still, this research highlights the hope to respectfully identify the distinctive shades of styles for the sake of a more significant human dialog and inclusion. The research´s grand ambition is knowingly bigger than what it itself can grasp to complete right now (2021) fully. It proposes an idea for the near future to shape a Digital Style Dictionary and a Digital Visual Compass that works for the common human aspect of seeing styles. This research is a first attempt towards shaping the fundamental frame towards a spectrum of the style´s, that we can respectfully continue to articulate for the sake to include better human communication on the aspect of seeing distinctiveness, not that style´s stands in a capital value program between something “high” or “low.” Instead, we can now start to collaborate in shaping and building these potential tools as A Digital Style Dictionary and A Digital Visual Compass in sharing a more human-centric spectrum of styles to push the human evolution of knowledge further.
