Use of Social Media and Online-based Tools in Academia

Pscheida, Daniela, Minet, Claudia, Herbst, Sabrina, Albrecht, Steffen, Köhler, Thomas 12 January 2016 (has links) (PDF)
The Science 2.0-Survey investigates the dissemination and use of online tools and social media applications among scientists of all disciplines at German universities (institutions of higher education) and research institutions (Leibniz, Helmholtz, Max Planck institutes). Results show that digital, online-based tools have found widespread use and acceptance in academia and must therefore be considered a central component of scientific working processes. Furthermore the data gathered also make it clear that certain usage patterns begin to emerge and stabilise as routines in everyday academic work. The most popular tools are the online encyclopedia Wikipedia (95% of all respondents use it professionally), mailing lists (78%), online archives/databases (75%) and content sharing/cloud services such as Dropbox or Slideshare (70%). Meanwhile, social bookmarking services remain largely untapped and unknown among scientists (only 5% professional usage). Online tools and social media applications are most commonly utilised in a research context. In addition to Wikipedia (67%), the top three tools used for research purposes are online archives/databases (63%), reference management software (49%) and content sharing/cloud services (43%). In teaching, learning management systems (32%) play a significant role, even though this mainly applies to universities. Video/photo communities (25%), online archives/databases (23%) and content sharing/cloud services (21%) are also used by scientists in the context of teaching. However, there seems to be some backlog in the fi eld of science communication. Scientists are rarely active in this area; 45 per cent of respondents say science communication is not part of their range of duties, while for another 40 per cent such activities comprise no more than 10 per cent of their daily workload. When active in the fi eld of science communication, scientists seem to favour classic online-based tools such as mailing lists (44%) or videoconferences/VoIP (35%), while typical Web 2.0 tools such as weblogs (10%) or microblogs (6%) are rarely used in this context. Social network sites (SNS) with a professional and/or academic orientation (30%), however, are relatively common for communication purposes in academia. The situation is similar for science administration practices where, although the use of online-based tools and social media applications is more common, no more than one-quarter of the scientists use a particular tool, while personal organizers/schedule managers (27%) dominate. The main factors cited by scientists as preventing them from using online-based tools and social media applications professionally are a lack of added value for their own work (30%), insufficient technical assistance (21%) and insufficient time to become familiar with the handling of the tools (15%). In particular, many scientists do not use microblogs (53%), discussion forums (41%) and weblogs (40%) professionally because they cannot see any added value in using them. With regard to the attitudes of scientists in relation to the use of online tools and social media applications, results show that they are aware of privacy issues and have relatively high concerns about the spread of and access to personal data on the Internet. However, scientists generally have few reservations about dealing with social media and show themselves to be open to new technological developments. This report documents the results of a Germany-wide online survey of a total of 2,084 scientists at German universities (1,419) and research institutions (665). The survey explores the usage of 18 online tools and social media applications for daily work in research, teaching, science administration and science communication. In addition to the frequency and context of use, the survey also documents reasons for the non-use of tools, as well as general attitudes towards the Internet and social media. The survey was conducted between 23 June 2014 and 20 July 2014 and is a joint project of the Leibniz Research Alliance „Science 2.0“, led by the Technische Universität Dresden’s Media Center.

Mentorskap as begeleidingshandeling

Dreyer, Johannes Machiel 10 1900 (has links)
In this dissertation mentoring as a form of guidance is researched. The origin of mentoring is investigated, a few characteristics of mentoring which have stood the test of time are discussed and prevailing practices promoting mentoring are compared with those of bygone eras. A diverse variety of approaches to mentoring are presented: in addition to the views of contemporary behavioural psychologists, vocationalists, educationists and teaching specialists, the classic interpretation of mentoring (as presented in the Odyssey and the Les Adventures de Telemaque (the works of Homer and Fenelon respectively) is also considered. In the last section a number of conclusions and recommendations are made regarding the aims, nature, characteristics and value of mentoring, factors affecting the outcome of mentoring and the skills and personal characteristics of mentors. The recommendations include guidelines for the effective handling of problematic issues regarding mentoring, such as the pragmatization and formalization thereof. / Educational Studies / M. Ed. Folkbildningsforskning som fält : från framväxt till konsolidering / Liberal Adult Education Research as a Field : from Emergence to Consolidation

Lundin, Anna January 2008 (has links)
This thesis is treating how Swedish liberal adult education research (folkbildningsforskning) has emerged and consolidated. The concepts of doxa, consecration, capital and field of Pierre Bourdieu are used to reconstruct liberal adult education research as a social field. The empirical material consists of texts and documents, structured chronologically between the years of 1954-2007. Central questions are: In which way can liberal adult education research be reconstructed as a field? How does it emerge? Which are the central values (doxa) that hold the field together and going, and where are the boundaries of the field? Who are the central agents of the field? How do they achieve recognition, and on which grounds? Which are the arenas that work as concecrating instances? The study indicates that the area establishes common concepts and references. A gradual expansion occurs. This involves increased opportunities, but also involves competition. Four different phases can be reconstructed as central: the emergence (1954-1979), the expansion (1980-1989), the institutionalisation (1990-1999) and the consolidation (2000-2007). Research summaries as well as organizations of special interests are contributing to the glow of the area. A number of strong positions are established as are a number of pretenders. These relate, in different ways, to the area and to broader perspectives and settings. The area is successfully handling and employing different kinds of challenges and opportunities. This is considered a sign of relative strength of the reconstructed field of liberal adult education research.

Gündogan, Göknur 10 December 2011 (has links)
Since the 1950’s, the conversion of industrial wastelands constitute an important phenomenon in Europe. Even if it is more known as a movement of urban redevelopment, it also holds a particular meaning for today’s cultural and artistic practices. These huge (vast) spaces that were abandoned by science and industries of the modern era start to become the places of alternative expressions which are convenient for exchanges between art, industry and science of contemporary times. Thus, these memorial places‐ through their particular characteristics incarnate the entity of the western contemporary societies. Starting by their facilities, the model of organization of work, and the industrial production approach that they reflect; their factories, laboratories and centers are at the crossroads of several artistic questions. The major objective of this thesis is to analyze the possibility of an interaction between art, science, and industry but also academia within the project of a particular cultural wasteland realized in Istanbul in Turkey by putting the emphasis on social –economicalechoes of such a conversion at urban level. Observing the unique example of Santralistanbul – an initiative of Bilgi University that gave life again to the ancient electricity power station of Silahtaraga‐, the point is to highlight theparticularities of the project and to focus principally on the activities concerning the domain of performing arts.

Exploration of the Socialization Process of Female Leaders in Counselor Education

Flowers, Lea Randle 22 May 2006 (has links)
Higher education literature, has several contributions that pertain to mentoring styles in academia, female faculty, gender and leadership, and recruitment and retention of women and minorities in academia. However, specific references that lend voice to the experiences of female counselor educators in the context of their career paths and patterns are scant(Hill, Leinbaugh, Bradley,& Hazler, 2005). This qualitative investigation explored the socialization process of 8 female leaders in counselor education from throughout the United States utilizing grounded theory methods. The primary theme of socialization was organized into three main categories, (a) childhood socialization, (b) anticipatory socialization (Van Mannen, 1976), and (c) organizational socialization (Van Mannen, 1976). Leaders' socialization experiences highlighted sub-themes of balancing work and family, satisfaction level of professional obligations and inequalities. The inequalities highlighted participants' experiences of exclusion in departments with counselor education and counseling psychology programs, as well as gender and race discrimination around issues such as salary, tenure and promotion. The results from this investigation provided a theoretical framework of the interrelated influences of their socialization process from childhood across the span of their careers to full professor and department chairs. Implications and recommendations for female doctoral students, counselor educators, professional development in higher education, mentoring relationships, supervision and leadership development are included.

A formação dos engenheiros militares: Azevedo Fortes, matemática e ensino da engenharia militar no século XVIII em Portugal e no Brasil / The military engineers backgraund: Azevedo Fortes, Mathematics and education of Military Engineering in XVIIIth century in Portugal and in Brazil

Ribeiro, Dulcyene Maria 20 August 2009 (has links)
This paper studies the historical construction, based on primary sources, of military engineers background in the first half of XVIIIth century in Portugal and in Brazil, according to the studied contents, focusing on algebra. The chosen subject is based on a scientific work that became a dissertation named as: A Obra: Lógica, Racional, Geométrica e Analítica (1744) of Manoel Fortes de Azevedo (1660-1749): a study of possible contributions for the education development between Portugal and Brazil, advised by professor Sergio Roberto Nobre and presented in 2003, at the Geoscience and Exact Sciences Institut, of UNESP, in Rio Claro. The search in files and details of sources were essential for this research. Therefore, this study looked for those sources, manuscripts of the public administration from portuguese crown as well as notes of lesson or theoretical documents, which mean, the students and professors production, printed papers or manuscripts. The contact with the sources allowed predicting the economic, political and cultural fields from the portuguese kingdom, in that period, during D. João V reign. In this context, military engineer professional activity, conditions of access to the profession and their institutional adequation, social ascension aspiration and their relationship with hierarchic superiors were studied. It was possible to better understand the military engineer backgraund, studying the students and professors who made part of Lisbon Military Academy. So, it was possible to predict how they would have taught the Lessons for the military engineer background in the Brazilian captainships, in order to identify the professors as well as the students who attended the classes. Finally, some texts that were used to prepare the military engineers of that time are presented, mainly the mathematical background, looking for understanding how the circumstances of their uses and their contents were produced.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Fernando Francisco Tsucana.pdf: 5935515 bytes, checksum: 999917d252c07890f737ed9d9ee43ce6 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014-04-29 / This research is focused on the relationship between theory and practice in the course of higher education of police officers given by the Academy of Police Sciences (ACIPOL) of Mozambique. Starting from the concern that the training offered by ACIPOL has been predominantly theoretical, methodological procedures used in teaching practice do not establish a connection with actual police practices; this study promotes, through supervised traineeship and pre-professionals practices, the relationship between the theoretical and practical skills training. Based on fundamentals of critical and reflective pedagogy , this study has used both quantitative and qualitative research tools to investigate a group of the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) officers in active, collecting their opinions and perceptions on issues affecting officer training offered by ACIPOL. As a result, this study raises the proposition that the courses should have a basic core training that is not simply structured around disciplines that finished passing along content, but be able to transform the current organization of scientific areas into learning axles, properly integrated and articulated with theoretical underpinnings and skills required for future professional role of learners.

Its main theme is the authoritarianism and the military discipline in the classroom. Theoretically supported by Michel Foucault s to Discipline and Punish: The Birth of the Prison my aim is to trace a historical panorama of the Military Police to understand this authoritarianism in the classroom. As a hypothesis, I put forward as a starting point for reasoning, the social-cultural evolution in which the responsible institution for the public order had to be inspired by human rights. When dealing with human rights and the dignity of the human being as regards the treatment of police officers as citizens, I have found out that there are evidences of equivocal authoritarianism in the formation of the military officer and I emphasize the idea of having a community police as a contribution to the solving of social conflicts. Consequently, I also propose the formation of officers at the military institutions and, simultaneously, at universities in order to promote the appearance of a hybrid formation of the police cadet adding to it the essence of the hierarchy and military discipline and that coming from the university. This movement will favour his maximum social inclusion, allowing him to solve his problems in a more democratic and humanistic way. Finally, I also take into consideration the curriculum of contemporaneity in which identity, the condition of the orther, diversity, subjectivity, signification and discourse, knowledge and power, knoweledge and culture are all interrelated in the formation of the officer of the Academilia de Polícia Militar do Barro Branco. I also point out thematic areas for implementation in the curriculum of the course in order to extinguish or minimize the authoritarianism in the classroom. Mediation and evaluation of the course are also pointed out as one of the most important aspects to improve the cadet s formation, transforming him into a responsible, democratic and autonomous officer / O presente trabalho apresenta o processo de formação do oficial da Polícia Militar do Estado de São Paulo da Academia de Polícia Militar do Barro Branco, trazendo como tema o autoritarismo e a disciplina militar em sala de aula.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Olga Regina Fregoni.pdf: 1107661 bytes, checksum: 96bedf2f9405cb04aa6ee9eb7040875c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-09-21 / This dissertation aims to demonstrate the subsisting rationalist principles and methods, which overcame the closure of the Escolas Modernas (Modern Schools) of São Paulo, starting a discussion with the Brazilian historiography which considers such experiments finished in 1919. In order to achieve this goal, we analyzed the set of scholastic attitudes present in the Academia de Comércio Saldanha , which was founded by the anarchist João Penteado, trying to recognize some continuity in the remaining of this experiment, between the years of 1920 and 1945. The temporal selection is justified by the encompassing period of intense debate about education issues in Brazil. To this analysis, we utilized the school journals, João Penteado s manuscripts and the scholastic administrative documentation which are current located at the Centro de Memória da Escola da Universidade de São Paulo (Memorial Center of the São Paulo University s School). We tried to link the anarchist proposal continuity to the resistance forms present in the liberating associations, understanding them as part of the ideal and culture of the anarchist period / Essa dissertação tem por objetivo demonstrar a permanência dos princípios e métodos racionalistas sobrevivendo ao fechamento das Escolas Modernas de São Paulo, estabelecendo uma discussão com a historiografia brasileira, que considera essa experiência encerrada em 1919.

As matemáticas puras e mistas e a Academia Real Militar do Rio de Janeiro: análise de paratextos de tratados, elementos e compêndios / Pure and mixed mathematics and the Royal Military Academy of Rio de Janeiro: Analysis of paratexts of treatises, elements and textbooks.

Barbosa, Elton Morais 03 October 2014 (has links)
This research deals with the analysis of paratexts of a few books originally written in French along with their translations into Portuguese, namely the Traité de Mécanique Élémentaire and the Tratado Elementar de Mechânica, by Francoeur; Élémens de Géometrie and Elementos de Geometria by LaCroix; and Traité dOptique and Óptica by Lacaille. Representing the so called mixed mathematics (in opposition to pure mathematics), these manuals, elementary compendia and treatises were employed by the students of the Royal Military Academy of Rio de Janeiro in the early 19th century. The aim of the work is to show how the process of translation of such corpus employed in the Royal Military Academy, as well as the political project in which it is inserted, present themselves in the adaptation process necessary for the editions in Portuguese. We do not rely in any didactic-pedagogical approaches, but on historiographical and epistemological analyses. Our particular methodological option was to focus on the paratexts of such books. In order to understand the distinction between pure and mixed mathematics, we largely employed contemporary dictionaries, statutes, programmatic texts and the French Encyclopedia. The research also tries to present the Royal Military Academy as a final expression of the Ancien Régime, the clientele networks involved in its creation and the agency of the translators of the books into Portuguese.
