The aim of the study is to investigate the relationship between text and picture in two works by Sven Nordqvist, with the focus on how the action is propelled. The two works are compared in order to bring out any differences in the relationship and what significance this can have for the interpretation. The study also considers the theory of conceptual worlds to examine how the books can promote pupils’ literary understanding. The method of analysis is based on Rhedin’s (2001) theoretical concepts and elements of Nikolajeva’s (2000) terminology. The study demonstrates a difference in the works, in that the first one has an even balance in the amount of text and pictures. It is obvious that text and picture interact and together carry the narrative forward, while simultaneously leaving some freedom of interpretation to the reader. In the other work, the pictures dominate in terms of both space and content, and it is chiefly the pictures that carry the narrative forward. In the second work there is also an unclear relationship between text and picture, which gives the reader further scope for interpretation. The pictures in the two works and the scope for interpretation make them suitable for the development of reading comprehension, through the construction of conceptual worlds.

Children and pre-school teachers daily meet pictures in picture books, usually during planned reading sessions. The purpose of this study is to provide a picture of what strategies pre-school teachers have about the use of images in childrens literature to stimulate childrens language development. This study is a qualitative interview where I have chosen to focus on the pre-school teachers views on pictures and how they use them. This study shows that language development is a large area in which the picture is an important part. All pre-school teachers use the pictures to stimulate childrens language development. Three out of four pedagouges interviewed said that they deliberately discuss the pictures in the picture books with the children. / Bilder i barnböcker möter barn och pedagoger dagligen i förskolan, vanligen vid planerade lässtunder. Syftet med denna studie är att ge en bild av vilka strategier pedagogerna har kring användandet av bilderna i barnlitteraturen för att stimulera barns språkutveckling. Denna studie är en kvalitativ intervjustudie där jag har valt att fokusera på pedagogernas syn på bilder samt deras användande av bilderna. Denna studie visar att språkutveckling är ett stort område där bilden är en viktig del. Samtliga pedagoger använder sig av bilder för att stimulera barns språkutveckling. Tre av fyra intervjuade pedagoger svarade att de medvetet för diskussioner om bilderna i barnböckerna tillsammans med barnen.

Mitt examensarbete består av en gestaltande del och en skriftlig. Den gestaltande delen är ett utforskande i hur jag i text och bild kan gestalta känslan separationsångest. Förlusten av en annan person, en tidigare förmåga eller till och med sig själv. I det här projektet undersöker jag delvis vem jag är i förhållande till mitt skapande efter att ha genomgått en utmattning. Det har också varit viktigt att låta projektet få vara ett sökande med hjälp av handen. För att släppa kontrollen och samtidigt hitta tillit till min egen förmåga igen. I den skiftliga delen berättar jag om min arbetsprocess i både text och bild. Jag går igenom olika faser, insikter, kompromisser, vändningar och beslut i kronologisk ordning. Liksom den gestaltande delen av mitt examensarbete är även den skriftliga delen ett visuellt narrativ där bilderna ges stort utrymme.

How is death presented in picture books? Does it matter how the characters in picture books react to grief and death? This study analyses four picture books with the intention of establishing which norms and core values are consistently reflected. The aim is to determine whether the reactions of characters to grief and death in illustrated literature are consistent with previous research findings in this field about Children’s reactions to sorrow and death. Illustrated literature is a fundamental feature of early year’s development at preschool. It plays a critical role in assisting children with visualization of “normal” reactions and emotions triggered by everyday life. Carefully selected illustrated literature can therefore be used to explain difficult situations such as death and grief processing. Children are able to identify with the characters presented and take guidance and influence from the illustrated reactions presented to Grief. The theoretical basis of the essay is John Bowlbys attachment theory on Children’s reactions to the loss of a connected person and its inherent normcritical perspective on gender. The method used is a targeted qualitative content analysis based on pre-defined themes and categories. The results show that the Children’s reactions to sorrow and death are indeed consistent with those recorded and presented previously when examining common reactions in children to mourning. The study also shows a deviation in the literature in question from social stereotypes on male and female behavior. Breaking these norms may mean that the behaviors presented in the books will eventually be normalized by the children.

The purpose of this study is to discover and analyse the gender stereotypes presented in a selection of books where the characters are gender neutral animals or figures, based on the fact that as a reader you cannot distinguish by the cover or the icon text if the characters are of the male or female sex. The books have been analysed with a qualitative image and text analysis from a gender perspective. The analysis has focused on highlighting the norms presented in the books with a focus on gender roles and the gender markers that can be linked to stereotypical behaviors of girls and boys respectively. The analyses show that the books contain both confirmatory and breaking representations of the characters in both text and image, regarding the prevailing gender stereotypes. / Syftet för denna studie är att upptäcka och analysera de könstereotyper som framställs i ett urval av böcker där karaktärerna är könsneutrala djur eller figurer, i den mån att man som läsare inte kan urskilja via omslaget eller ikonotexten om karaktärerna är av det manliga eller kvinnliga könet. Böckerna har analyserats med en kvalitativ bild och textanalys utifrån ett genusperspektiv. Analysen har fokuserat på att synliggöra de normer som framställs i böckerna med fokus på könsroller och de genusmarkörer som kan kopplas till stereotypa beteenden hos flickor respektive pojkar. Analyserna visar att böckerna innehåller både bekräftande och brytande framställningar hos karaktärerna i både text och bild, gällande de rådande könssterotyperna.

Aldrig ensam: bilderbok till VR Jag har utforskat bilderboken och försökt utveckla en ny berättarform som bjuder in läsaren till en djupare dimension på samma gång som den ger bilderboken en chans att komma till “liv” på ett fysiskt vis. Jag har gjort detta genom att återskapa en barnbok, som jag illustrerat och skrivit tillsammans med Dr. Heather Briscoe, till en VR upplevelse. Genom att hämta mina akvarell-illustrationer ur bilderboken utforskar jag kontrasten mellan det analoga tvådimensionella och det digitala tredimensionella genom temat “Relation till naturen”. Berättelsen handlar om stunder ur ett barns liv och familjebanden som introducerar naturens kretslopp genom tidlös visdom. / Never Alone: Picture Book into VR I have studied the picture book and tried to develop a new narrative form that invites the reader to enter a deeper dimension while also giving the picture book a chance to come to “life” in a physical way. I have done this by recreating a children’s book, which I illustrated and wrote in collaboration with Dr. Heather Briscoe, into a VR experience. By bringing in my watercolour illustrations from the picture book, I explore the contrast between the analogue two-dimensional and the digital three-dimensional through the theme “Relationship to nature”. The narrative is about moments from a child’s life and the family ties that introduce nature’s cycles through timeless wisdom.

Uppsatsen är en kvalitativ studie av bilderböcker, från 1970-talet och 2000-talet. I början av uppsatsen presenteras en historisk tillbakablick i bilderbokens historia för att skapa förståelse för hur bilderboken är uppbyggd och vad den innehåller idag. Studien behandlar olika teman i bilderböcker, förskola, döden, skilsmässa och invandring. Med fokus på ett visst tema från 1970-talet, sedan har denna jämförts med en bok från 2000-talet som analyserats med samma utgångspunkter. Inspirerade av en tidigare studie har vi utgått från följande frågor för vår analys: hur samspelar text och bild i bilderboken? Hur beskriver bilden händelsen i boken? Stämmer skildringen i boken överens med sin tid samt vad finns det för skillnader respektive likheter i våra utvalda bilderböcker inom särskilda teman, i jämförelse 1970-tal samt 2000-tal? I resultat och analys presenteras böckerna, vad de handlar om, en deskriptiv analys av vardera bok och en jämförande analys. Sedan skrivs en sammanfattande analys, då de båda tidsepokerna, 1970-tal och 2000-tal jämförs. Det vi generellt har sett är att 1970-talets bilderböcker präglas av det socialrealistiska samhället och är mer av faktakaraktär. 2000-talets bilderböcker är individualistiska, vi får höra barnens egna tankar och känslor i dessa, något tyngre ämnen inom bilderboksvärlden. Trots att dessa är lite tyngre ser vi mycket humor i böckerna, likaså blinkningar till de vuxna läsarna. I slutdiskussionen behandlas att det idag inte skrivs mycket bilderböcker på teman som exempelvis alkoholism. Sedan tas också upp huruvida bilderboken har låg status i samhället och vad detta kan innebära för framtidens barn.

Denna studie analyserar fyra bilderböcker: Den långa, långa resan av Ilon Wikland och Rose Lagercrantz (1995), Tänk dig att fly av Pimm van Hest (2018), Flykten av Francesca Sanna (2016) samt Dagen då kriget kom av Nicola Davis (2018). Bilderböckerna skildrar barn som faller offer för krig och deras resa till fredligare länder. Studiens syfte är att undersöka skildringen av krig i bilderböcker och hur dessa kan tillämpas i svenskundervisningen i grundskolans senare år samt i gymnasiet. Studien visar att bilderböckerna i hög grad använder samma tekniker för att skildra krig: färger, stilfigurer och relationen mellan text och illustrationer. Trots teknikernas likheter används de på mycket olika sätt i bilderböckerna, vilket skapar stora skillnader i berättandet. Dessa skillnader skulle med fördel kunna belysas i svenskundervisningen för att i enlighet med internationell forskning stärka elevers språkliga utveckling.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to investigate how gender stereotypes appear in Swedish picture books. The investigation consists of literature studies and the method used is a text –and picture analysis. By using this method, it allows us to interpret both text and pictures in the books. It is carried through by consultation of Yvonne Hirdmans theory of how men and women are two different things and that man in this relation constitutes the norm. We will compare three picture books from 1973 with three picture books from 1993, to see if stereotypes are of the same kind or if any differences appear. We will also examine how the picture books reflect the contemporary sex equality in the society of 1973 and 1993. Do men and women follow stereotypes in the form of different looks, characteristics, feelings and activities? The result indicates that gender stereotypes still appear in picture books. Through the analysis, it appears that girls to a grater extend are described as more girlish in the picture books from 1973, than in 1993. It also appears that the male characters don’t depart from the gender stereotype norm. / Uppsatsnivå: C

The aim of this Master’s thesis is to investigate how contemporary Swedish picture-books describe ethnicity. The analysis is based upon eight books that were published during the period 1996 to 2006. The thesis is based upon a qualitative content analysis and a model of analysis that has been constructed with inspiration from Maria Nikolajeva and Pil Dahlerup and their conceptions of analyzing literature. The study’s theoretical framework is primarily based on the sociology of literature and the perspective of the society in literature. We also introduce the conception ethnicity and its connection with nationalism, race, culture, norm, “us and them” and stereotyping. The results show that contemporary Swedish picture-books describe ethnicity stereotyped on the basis of Swedish norms. The picture-books in the study separate the ethnical Swedish from ethical foreign by emphasizing contrasts between the two. These contrasts cause a negative distance between the Swedish and foreign and emphasises the concept of “us and them”. / Uppsatsnivå: D
