The School-Based Family: Coaches and Teachers as Parental Figures for Orphans and Vulnerable Children in Ugandan SchoolsWarren, Angela 12 June 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to qualitatively examine the possible formation of surrogate families within Ugandan schools to provide a context for positive development experiences, especially for orphans who lack positive development opportunities provided by parents. The sample for this study consisted of 66 Ugandan Secondary School students from eight schools in the Mukono district of Uganda. This study found a potentially widespread family formation pattern between students and their teachers/coaches. More than 75% of students self-identified their teacher and/or coach as family. The results provide insight concerning why orphans and vulnerable children are forming surrogate families with staff members at school. Teachers and coaches were able to offer the students positive developmental assets and were therefore identified as family.

Reading First/Bay State Reading Initiative: Public vs. Private Implementation-Which Produces the Best Results?Di Leo, Marlene A 13 May 2011 (has links)
The dissertation is a study to determine which program, Reading First or Bay State Reading Initiative, will demonstrate the greatest gains in reading for students in grades K-3 using a 3-Tier Reading Model. The findings from this study are intended to provide pertinent information on which best practices work in increasing student achievement for reading. Education reform continues to be a hot topic at all levels within the United States. With the spending of billions of federals, state and local dollars, the persistent talk of accountability is ongoing. Since NCLB inception, the year 2014 when all students need to reach proficiency in statewide standardized tests in mathematics and reading, continues to be a threatening time period. With each state setting its own definition and determination of what proficiency is, it is measured by the Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). This AYP measurement will determine each school’s progress incrementally until it reaches 100% in 2014. 48% of all schools in Massachusetts failed to make their AYP in 2004. It is predicted that by 2014, 90% of schools in Massachusetts will not reach its APY obligation (MassPartners for Public Schools, 2005). With the pursuit of reaching AYP, the search is still on for what best practices work in increasing student achievement.
This study utilizes a mixed method research design; including quantitative analysis of the reading scores, a qualitative analysis of teacher and administrator perspective on the effectiveness vii of each program and a financial cost-effectiveness comparison of the two programs. The quantitative research design includes comparing DIBELS and GRADE results of two elementary schools for students in grades K – 3 each of which uses a different reading program. School A uses the Houghton Mifflin Reading Series for their core reading curriculum while School B uses Scott Foresman Reading Street. In addition to comparing the aggregate scores of each school to each other, a number of sub-groups will also be compared. These groups will include low income students (students who receive free and reduced lunch), students with limited English proficiency (LEP), and special education students. Mean comparisons will be utilized to identify which program produces the best results.
In order to identify strengthens and weaknesses of each approach a questionnaire will be utilize to obtain this information from teachers and the administrators who took part in implementing both programs.
In these times of tight budgets and difficult decisions on how to meet the needs of all students it is imperative that cost effectiveness is examined between the two programs. Which of these two programs will provide the greatest gain? How much will that gain cost? Which program will reap the best results for the least amount of money?

This study investigate how job coaches presents newcomers' employability and their vulnerable position in the Swedish labour market. Through a social constructivist approach and qualitative method, we have interviewed seven job coaches about their portrayal of new arrivals' employability. The study also examines how job coaches' reason and describes what obstacles and opportunities newcomers encounter in their establishing in the Swedish labour market. The study further investigates how job coaches' descriptions can be understood on the basis of critical theories of ‘othering’, prejudices and discrimination. The results show that job coaches represent newcomer's vulnerable situation and that they encounter several obstacles in their establishing in the Swedish labour market. Language skills in the Swedish language, lack of networks and the attitude of employers are three examples of obstacles that new arrivals encounter. The results also show that newcomers are offered supportive measures, such as language training and interview training. Finally, the study shows that job coaches descriptions of newcomer's employability can be understood as a kind of "othering" image of newcomers because they are presented as a "different" group in the labour market, in need of special efforts. We hope that this study contributes with understanding and knowledge of the situation of newcomers in the Swedish labour market.

En positiv diskrimineringsom ger effekt : En kvalitativ studie om tränarutbildaresupplevelse om genusmedvetenhet vidtränarutbildningar / Positive discrimination that has an effect. : A qualitative study of coach educators' experience ofgender awareness at coach education programs.Säker, Rasmus January 2023 (has links)
Football has long been male-dominated. Although the number of women practicing in football has increased, there are still very few women coaches in football. Sports norms tend to be male and whenthe majority of men are in leadership positions these norms tend to be reproduced. Therefore, it is important that women also enter these roles, such as the coaching position. The purpose of the study was to identify the perceptions and experiences of football coaches' educators of gender awareness in the coaching training UEFA B. A qualitative method is carried out to investigate phenomena, perceptions and experiences. In the study, six semi-structured interviews were conducted with three women and three men. The questions asked about leadership, gender, educational design and differences in leadership. The result showed that a gender awareness was visible in the reasoning of the coach trainers and the majority of shortcomings in gender equality were presented and proposals for further development of the area were mentioned. A certain nuanced norm criticism was not always visible which indicated that a conclusion could be drawn. The conclusion was that unions, associations, and men have a responsibility to increase gender equality efforts. An important aspect is that the coach development program's initiatives must be integrated into regular operations. Where an important partis that the initiative of the coachlift should be implemented in ordinary operations.

Motiveringstrategieë van sportafrigters binne Suid-Afrikaanse konteksLe Roux, Jacobus Gerhardus 30 November 2008 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / The main objective of this investigative study was to determine the motivational strategies of sport coaches within the South African context.
The theoretical investigation indicated that the setting of goals and feedback seem to be the two most popular methods used by sport coaches to motivate their athletes. Different motivational theories, as well as the possible role of these theories within the sporting realm, were addressed.
For the empirical investigation the motivational theories elucidated in the theoretical investigation, were used as point of departure . A factor analysis of the gathered data gave rise to the emergence of four motivational strategies, namely reward, winning, a cognitive approach and self-confidence. An ANOVA procedure led to the following findings: Sport coaches show meaningful differences in their accentuation of these motivational strategies based on types of sport, gender and whether they have received formal training in Sport Psychology or not. No meaningful differences were found when institutions, qualifications and experience as sport coach were considered as variables. / Psychology / M. Sc. (Psychology)

Coachande studievägledare - Vägledande coacherKarlsson, Christina, Holmer, Solvig January 2015 (has links)
