The Talk of the Town : Gossip and the Urban Communities of Eighteenth-Century Stockholm

Pettersson Schweitzer, Lina January 2024 (has links)
This thesis investigates gossip and rumours through a narrative lens in order to understand what kind of stories emanated from eighteenth-century Stockholm, and what these stories reveal about the moral values and concerns of the urban community. Using records from the consistory court and the lower courts of Stockholm, the thesis sheds some light on the stories which tend to go under the radar, and gives insights into the subtle facets of urban life, wherein gossip nurtured a culture of speculation and suspicion. By uncovering the narratives which preoccupied the urban population of Stockholm, some thematical patterns have emerged: people gossiped about sexual immorality, marital disorder, financial dishonesty, and perceived threats against the Lutheran faith. Typically, these stories seem to have emanated from the neighbourhood or the household. The study also shows that gossip and rumours told the stories of those who violated core moral values – stories that heavily relied on a repertoire of narrative tropes and figures to portray those who transgressed social and moral boundaries. These stories reveal a deep concern for – even fear of – the hidden threats in the urban fabric: immoral characters disguised as honest members of the community. As inversions of core values, these narrative stereotypes were perceived as dangerous threats to social order and unity, whose actions could have far-reaching implications for society at large. As such, these were symbolically charged and value-laden stories. Through highlighting the coercive aspects of these stories, this thesis also argues that gossip provided urban communities with an opportunity to voice collective concerns and protect community values by unmasking hidden threats, and control or stigmatise transgressors.

När kvinnan vinner : En filmanalys om maktrelationer / When the woman is the winner : A film analysis of power structures

Lemark, Cajsa January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to examine in which way power structures are played out in the 2022 movie The Menu (2022). Five categories of scenes with the main focus on the main character have been selected to be analyzed through a narrative movie analysis with focus on intersectionality regarding class and gender in relation to the theory of the final girl. Every scene is to be explained and then, together with the main narrative, analyzed through theories of marxism, Bourdieu’s capital theory and Clover’s final girl in focus. The study concludes that the power structures of class and gender is played out through the main character by her using her looks as a beautiful and young woman as well as her working class background in the service industry as an escort to her advantage in getting to know the male antagonist. By doing so she can, unlike the other guests which are all upper class, escape the safe death they all face. / The purpose of this media production is to be used as a base for discussion during seminars regarding honor related violence and oppression. Welcome to the end of the world : En analys av ljudbilden i True Detective: Night Country / Welcome to the end of the world : A analysis of the soundscape in True Detective: Night Country

Rohde Vittsell, Måns January 2024 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze and seek for a possible meaning and suggestion behind the soundscape in the first episode of True Detectives fourth season; Night Country. Four individual elements have been selected for deeper analysis and based upon those, six scenes where those elements are present were selected for the study. Each auditory element that was selected was then analyzed in depth looking at the more technical aspects of identifying and categorizing sound but also how it impacts the audience on an emotional and narrative level to explore, not only how the soundscape is established early on, but what effects this has on the viewers expectations and predictions for how the narrative could unfold. The results of this study points towards there being, for the first time in the series history, something paranormal happening in the world of the characters. Despite there being hints and suggestions that paranormal activity is part of the cinematic world of True Detective in the past, this has never been the case once the mysteries unfold but the soundscape in Night Country, as early as episode one, and the results of this study suggests that this is about to change. / The purpose of this media production is to be used as a base for discussion during seminars regarding honor related violence and oppression. Hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck av barn och unga : Socialtjänstens och förvaltningsrättens föreställningar om hedersproblematik i LVU mål / Honour Based Violence of Minors : Social services’ and administrative court’s view of honour based problems in lawsuits regarding law of mandatory care of minors

Gustafsson, Ida, Gustafsson, Kajsa January 2017 (has links)
The United Nation’s definition of honour based violence (HRV) in 1999 defines women’s exposure of violence related to honour. In Sweden, HRV was regarded as a social problem in the 1990’s, when women were murdered by their close family members. Loss of honour was explained as a reason for the killings. Ever since the beginning of debate in Swedish media, science has noticed the complexity of HRV. The aim of this study was to examine how Swedish social services and administrative courts constructed honour based violence (HRV) when law of mandatory care of minors is used in court cases. The lawsuits regarded both females and males, in the ages of 10-17 years old. We used a document analysis of thirteen court cases from 2016 regarding 2§ Law of mandatory care of minors (LVU), which is a paragraph of deficiencies in care of youths. We used the keyword Honour related violence when searching for court cases. We could determine that physical violence is constructed as legal issues when it’s explained in detail, fragmented and when the minor was regarded as believable to the administrative court. Psychological violence included the involvement of threats, threats of physical violence and threats of forced marriages, and was all seen as an integrated view on violence. Honour was constructed as an isolation of the youths, limiting their social and leisure time and the children were controlled by their guardians. According to social services and administrative courts, the control was not seen as age appropriate.

Hedersmordet på Fadime : hur det påverkade debatten om hedersrelaterat våld i Sverige

Tuvér, Alexandra January 2009 (has links)

To be both loved and exposed : A qualitative study of the tension between social workers' guidelines and practice with children and young people who are exposed to honour-related violence and oppression

Janbert Winbladh, Ebba, Ovesson, Jannike January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to investigate the guidelines, methods and strategies of social workers supporting children and young people who live with honour-related problems – in order to deepen the knowledge of tensions between the guidelines of social work and its practices. The result of the study has emerged from qualitative interviews with six social workers working with children and young people and three local authority documents containing guidelines and routines. The social workers were asked questions about their experiences of guidelines and routines and their current work situation. To analyse and understand the results a thematic method was used along with theories on discretion. The result shows that social workers use different assessment manuals in order to assess that a child/young person is exposed to honour-related problems, but their experience is that the manuals are not complete and adapted to children and young people who live with honour-related problems. Therefore, many social workers have a discretion, where they can take available methods and adapt them to the honour-related cases. The social workers have several different voluntary and family-oriented interventions to offer, but in honour-related cases the interventions are not optimal. The social workers experience difficulties with working with the families of children and young people with honour-related problems because they are not receptive to change, which was the first tension that could be identified. The overall experience of the interviewed social workers regarding honour-related cases shows that their work is complex in relation to laws, guidelines and methods. Thereby another tension was discovered in the result and analysis between forced interventions relating to the laws and guidelines and principles of the child's best interests. The social worker experiences are that it is difficult to motivate forced interventions as it does not always improve the situation of the child.

OSKULDSINTYGET : En kvalitativ studie om kvinnors sexuella begränsningar inom hedersrelaterat våld och förtryck / The Certificate of Virginity : A qualitative study of women's sexual limitations in honor-related violence and oppression

Eriksson, Fanny, Larsson Durgé, Amanda January 2021 (has links)
The honor-related problem in Sweden is today far from solved and a request for a virginity certificate or a virginity operation has become increasingly common in the society. The purpose: To investigate how women's sexuality is being limited in an honor-related context in Sweden from a professional perspective. The study intends to investigate the consequences for women and the society as the issuance of virginity certificates and the implementation of virginity operations are not yet punishable under Swedish law. Theory: The theoretical frame of reference is based on role theory and critical theory. Method: An empirical study with qualitative interviews compiled in a thematic text analysis with a hermeneutic view and with inspiration from an inductive approach. Results: Shows how the family hierarchy affects the woman, how professionals do not dare to tackle the problem, that there is a need for better collaboration and trust-building treatment from the professionals. There is a large dark figure around virginity certificates and virginity operations and that it is a dilemma for professionals. A broader knowledge is needed within and across professional boarders and as well for the woman and her family network. Conclusion: There are several factors that contribute to the woman's sexuality being limited and how virginity certificates and virginity operations lead to a continued oppression of women. There is a need for better collaboration from all of society's authorities and the society need to see virginity certificates and virginity operations as a social problem.
