The Century of Narcissistic Love : Space, writing and the consumption of the other in Århundradets kärlekssaga and Århundradets kärlekskrig

Guldbacke Lund, Linnéa January 2020 (has links)
This essay examines how the love relationship is made in Märta Tikkanens Århundradets kärlekssaga and Ebba Witt-Brattströms Århundradets kärlekskrig. The aim for this study is to analyze how place, and the consumption of “the other” interact in the writing of a love relationship. I explore how a narcissistic, collapsed subject functions and how it is made in the poems. I discuss how and if experience-based writing maintains a capitalistic and narcissistic lovesystem where the subject commits violence on itself and others by determining an abstract and physical place. The book Eros Agoni by Byung-Chul Han discusses the atopic otherness in the love relationship and how the liberalistic and consuming subject exploit the other and itself. I analyze this theory of the other and how the love relationships function in the poems. I also discuss how the others lack of space and how the consuming gaze is made in the writing. In the fixing of place there is an aspect of power where a consuming gaze exploits the other by doing, and writing it.    In parallel with the analysis, I also problematize myself and my own writing and the fears that exist in a collapsed, narcissistic, writing subject. I show how the writer violates text and analysis, and how the determination of place is an illusion of liberation in the capitalist system. I show how failed writing can become a way out of a capitalist society where the subject strives for perfection.

A teoria pulsional freudiana à luz da leitura de Green: uma alternativa ao biologismo mítico / Freuds drive theory in the light of Greens readings: an alternative to mythical biologism

Cano, Tatiana Monreal 15 May 2015 (has links)
Given the Freudian explanation for the phenomenon of compulsion to repeat based on the death drives thesis, conceived as a return to the inorganic state, one formulates the following question: would it be possible, on the one hand, to refuse the Freudian explanation guided by its mythical biologism, and on the other hand accept the thesis that the death drive is a disengagement force? To answer this question we find a vast amount of material on the work published by André Green throughout his career of more than forty years under the title \"work of the death drive\", later renamed \"work of the negative\". This thesis aims to systematize Greens reading and contributions to the Freudian drive theory, especially regarding the second drive dualism. It is divided into two parts. The first one is Green\'s analysis of the relationship between death drive and theory of narcissism on Freud\'s work; the second one is about his criticism of Freud\'s solipsism and the need to its overcome through contemporary theories around the notions of object and potential space. These will be complemented by a theory of the temporality of the psyche. The present work supports the thesis that Green accepts the Freudian concept of death drive as a disengagement force, but refuses the mythical biologism subjacent to the return to the inorganic states idea. Furthermore, if Green agrees with the Freudian explanation of the death drive as a disengagement force expressed in the negative narcissism he will refuse to conceive that the disengagement process will be established spontaneously or automatically. To him, this process should be thought through the articulation of instintual functioning and the objects response that in this case fails in establishing the principle of pleasure; in other words, the failure of the waiting installation establishes the compulsion to disengage and to disconnect. Insomuch, the deadly compulsion to repeat, instead of repeating the unconscious desire and therefore be referred to the intemporality of the unconscious and to the logic of hope is actually an anti-time. In this sense, present, past and future are reduced to the instant of total discharge of all tension, precluding any project. Given the above it follows that Greens theorization regarding the work of the negative, though averse to the Freudian thesis of the return to the inorganic state, accept however the thesis of death drive as a shutdown process provided that this is thought through the articulation of the intrapsychic and intersubjective dimensions. This implies thinking of the objects response and make it responsible for the failure in the installation of heterochrony in the psyche. It concludes that the work of Green offers an original alternative to the mythical biologism regarding the explanation of the death drive

[en] BEAUTY AND DEATH: A PSYCHOANALYTIC APPROACH ON AESTHETICS AND THE FEMININE SUBJECT / [pt] O BELO É A MORTE: UMA ABORDAGEM PSICANALÍTICA SOBRE A ESTÉTICA E O SUJEITO FEMININO

SERGIO AGUIAR DE MEDEIROS 26 July 2005 (has links)
[en] In order to build up the hypothesis that aesthetics is a strategy to alleviate anguish and to consubstantiate desire, the author seeks to set up a statute for the psychic system. In the field of the subject, aesthetics would be part of the primary narcissism, a moment when the formation of the Ego is witnessed by an image that lends materiality to the subject and to the presence of alterity. To design a perimeter for the void and to be able to see it is to bestow sense to existence and to restrain the anguish of death. Aesthetics would serve the cause of the desire. From scenes of manifest dreams to the image of the erotic object, desire can not dispense with the shape which will grant form to its illusion. It would be incumbent on aesthetics to present the configurations of the repressed and to redeem the creativity of the polymorphic infantile perversion. By means of works of art the author presents aesthetics as a relation between the subjects, mediated by anguish and desire. Investigating the sense of the quest for aesthetics regarded as beautiful, one analyses its role at the present time. Using as a focus the contemporaneous feminine subjectivity, the author points out its double relation with image. Whereas, on one hand, there is an aesthetic discourse expressed by the media making up a body intended for consumption, on the other hand there would be another, an aesthetic commandment stated by the feminine superego imposing the regard of the Other as compensation for or negation of castration. The author concludes his approach of what he named as Infirmities of Beauty by identifying two distinct groups, one made up by subjects who seek the death of the body as a strategy for the survival of the Ego. And another made up by those who adhere to the contemporaneous aesthetic message and are addicted to visibility.

The Artist and Her Muse: a Romantic Tragedy about a Mediocre and Narcissistic Painter Named Rachel Hoffman

Hoffman, Rachel Gavronsky 09 April 2004 (has links)
Imagine a theater. Build one in your mind. I do not care if it is the largest theater in the universe or if it is the size of a shoebox. The theater can be an elaborate construction with gilded cherubs and priceless jewels. If you would prefer the theater to be a minimal design, imagine it that way. Maybe the theater is made out of glass or crystal. You can be all alone in the theater or maybe you are seated next to an alien, a cave man, or a robot. As the curtain rises an enormous pipe organ is spewing out J.S. Bach’s Toccata and Fugue in D minor. The sound is colossal. The stage is designed to look like a filthy and bleak art studio. Sculptures that look like decaying flesh hang from the ceiling. Papers and dirty painting rags are scattered all over the floor. A roach crawls towards some moldy food in the wastebasket. A piece of beef jerky sits next to a pile of paint tubes and paintbrushes. Canvases are stacked against the wall. Dried paint is splattered everywhere. A woman enters stage left. As she begins to speak, the music fades… “My most recent paintings are meant to serve as gateways between daily life and an exotic utopian fantasy. These strange psychological spaces function as portals into a new frontier inhabited with the most stupendous creatures. Active volcanoes, carnivorous plants, terrible lizards, pink Chihuahuas, flesh-eating insects, unidentified flying objects, and a host of other amazing things coexist in this cruel tropical paradise. “Everything I do is a self-portrait and a disguise. I imagine the characters in my paintings to be mutant clones. The act of painting is like looking in the mirror. I like to spend most of my time doing one or the other. I am driven by an insatiable urge to see what I truly look like. I suffer from an unfulfilled desire to meet myself. I am frustrated with impressions and reflections. These confessions reveal my work as possibly the most disgusting display of narcissism in the entire history of art. “The act of painting is an absurd and self-indulgent enterprise. I paint with the ridiculous and frivolous purpose of delighting the eye. Nevertheless, my hope is that my paintings capture an important aspect of my utopian fantasy with their sumptuous surroundings embellished with rainbows, natural disasters, butterflies, exotic grasses and bizarre costumes. “My paintings can be read on many different levels from surface to deep allegory. The finished product is the result of hours upon hours of painting, pondering, and dreaming. Below the surface lies a nauseating abyss. “My work is a delicious feast for the aesthetic consumer. I am a villainous mad scientist with a hunger for immortality. My eyes are gluttonous fools. I am a mystery and a deception. Vermillion is my opulent fetish. Lemon yellow is my nemesis.” The music grows louder again. The woman begins to cackle. She then takes a deep breath and a deeper and more dramatic bow. She exits stage right--you find that you want to applaud--but unfortunately, this story is not over. I suggest that you get yourself a snack like some popcorn, chocolate, or gummy bears before reading any further. The curtain slowly and elegantly comes down.

The Jouissance of Reading Jeanette Winterson's Written on the Body

Heui-tsz Chang Unknown Date (has links)
Chapter One Introduction Chapter Two The Jouissance of Pursuing Love Chapter Three The Jouissance of Being Immortal in Fantasy Chapter Four The Bliss of Reading Written on the Body: A Writerly Text with Jouissance Chapter Five Coda / Abstract In this study of Jeanette Winterson’s Written on the Body I would like to explore jouissance in different forms and levels in the process of reading this novel. The emphasis will be laid upon three aspects: first, the jouissance of pursuing love; secondly, the jouissance of being immortal in fantasy; and thirdly, the jouissance of reading this novel. The thesis is divided into five parts. In the first chapter, the beginning section is devoted to a general introduction of Jeanette Winterson and her novels; in the ensuing section, I will picture the interrelationships between the three registers—the real, the imaginary, and the symbolic—and jouissance in Lacanian psychoanalysis, which will be adopted as the interpretative model to account for the theme of jouissance in the whole thesis. In the second chapter, I will stress on the narrator’s exalted love toward Louise and the construction of his/her ego. On the surface, it is odd that the narrator’s sublime love for Louise contradicts his/her decision—to leave Louise; however this paradox is reasonable, because love and loss is in fact symbiosis. A distance between the loving subject and the loved object is necessary in the case of romantic love; though painful, the loving subject enjoys itself in the act of endless pursuit for the loved object, which is actually an ideal ego of the subject’s self. The paradox of love in company with suffering explains the narrator’s addiction in love and the disappearance of Louise. In the third chapter, my interest is getting deeper: what does the narrator want to grub out of the ideal image of Louise, and why does the narrator have to live in the fantasy of ideal love and to be with an ideal lover? The principal cause that I will explore is the fear of being castrated and of the impotency of the symbolic. The subject has an essential desire to be integral and immortal (which is the concept of the real and is allied to jouissance), but there are forces from the reality (or the symbolic) to drain this desire. Therefore, fantasy becomes a protective talisman for the narrator (as well as for every subject) to forget its fragmentation and inability. In the fourth chapter, the interrelation between the text and the reader is the dominant consideration, and Roland Barthes’ theory of writerly text that engenders bliss (jouissance) will be the critical base. There is an interesting formula between the text/the reader and Louise/the narrator. The text for the reader is similar to Louise for the narrator: in both situations, the desired one seduces and slides from the probing other. Reading Written on the Body on the surface is painful and irritating; in a sense, the act of reading is ecstatic. The origin of the bliss of reading is the uncertain elements intentionally created by the author. The unfilled space in the text that entertains readers is characterized by its feature of endless generation—various possibilities are created, and the network of meanings extends. Therefore, to conclude the whole scheme of love and reading in the fifth chapter, I will point out that a space or a distance between the pursuing subject (the reader or the loving subject) and the pursued object (the text of the loved object) is inevitable because jouissance inherent in the human body is in its essence paradoxical.

Erotic Triangles and Sexual Politics: Feminism in THe French Lieutenant's Woman Revisited

Chiang, Yung-Nan Unknown Date (has links)
Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman~U1;'s feminism has been a point of contentions among feminist critics; most feminist critics argue that Fowles is not a feminist but a phallocratic wolf clothed in feminist clothes. This thesis intends to readdress the feminist issues in Fowles's novel by probing onto the multiple layers of triangular relationships and sexual politics among the characters. This thesis consists of four chapters. A theorectical base of this thesis, Chapter one is a discussion on the "the discourse of erotic triangle" posited repectively by Lacan and Levi-Strauss through the idea of incest taboo. Through French feminist Luce Irigaray's critigue and appropriation of Lacan and Levi-Strauss, this chapter lays bare the subordination of women in patriarchal society, psychological or social. Chapter Two is concentrated on what Irigaray calls the foundational structure of patriarchal society--"hom(m)osexual economy". The matrimonial alliance between Ernestina and Charles and the sexual escapade of Charles' gentlemen club are singled out to illustrate how women are exchanged as objects between men. Chapter Three focuses on the sexual politics in Charles' s love triangle with Ernestaina and Sarah. Chapter Four deals with radical feminism and Sarah's lesbianism with Millie and Christina. Irigaray's and Wittig' separatist politics are deployed to show how Sarah transgresses the patriarchally-defined boundary between the sexes, destroys the Victorians' mythologization of women as asexual--yet produtive--Madonna, and then forges an subjectivity independent of the male sex.

The Influence of Birth Order and Gender on Narcissism as it Relates to Career Development

Duffy, Clare 1978- 16 December 2013 (has links)
This study explored the relationship between self-development as evidenced in the domain of narcissism and the process of vocational development as evidenced in career values, planning, and decisiveness/self-efficacy. It was suggested that this relationship would be impacted by family birth order and gender. Heinz Kohut's theory of self-psychology was utilized to understand narcissism from both an adaptive and maladaptive, developmental perspective. A review of narcissism and self-development theories was included to provide a comparative and comprehensive approach. Literature indicated that the development of narcissism was influenced by birth order and gender. Additionally, a review of the literature suggested a connection between Kohut's theory of the self and narcissism and aspects of the career development process, such as planning, decision-making, and occupational values. The sample consisted of 346 undergraduate students. Structural Equation Modeling was performed to test causal hypotheses. The major findings of the current study were that superiority (a measure of grandiosity) predicts altruistic career values and career decisiveness. Superiority is a slightly better predictor of altruistic career values than decisiveness. Additionally, goal instability (idealizing) predicts altruistic career values and career decisiveness. Goal instability had a predictive value that was nearly three times stronger for decisiveness. The results indicated that birth order and gender were not moderator variables in examining the relationship between goal instability and superiority. This study provided insight into the relationship between narcissism and the vocational/career development processes. These relationships may be important for career counselors and other related professionals. These findings may encourage counselors to assess and understand a client's narcissistic tendencies and individual representations when assisting in the career development process. A client's values regarding career options, along with his/her associated self-efficacy and ability to make important decisions, appear to be factors to consider when counseling an individual through vocational/career development. Limitations of the study were addressed and directions for further research discussed.

Le Père "impuissant" et l'objet a "impossible" : impasses adolescentes dans le lien social actuel / The “powerless” father and the “impossible” object a : adolescent impasses in current social link

Druzhinenko-Silhan, Daria 22 September 2012 (has links)
This PhD thesis is dedicated to a study on adolescence in the current social link. We put into relation several psychoanalytical concepts in order to acknowledge the difficulties of passing through adolescence that we observed in the Clinic. The methodology of this research is based on the study “CoPsyEnfant”. We used children’s and adolescents’ drawings in order to find out which are the identification models used today by children and adolescents. Clinical interviews and projective tests were used to help us to understand the subjectivity processes and hardships of adolescent passage in the current social link. The analysis of three clinical cases demonstrated several possible paths while passing through adolescence. We conclude on the question of the failure of the adolescent subject. The difficulty to grow can be heard today as the lack of desire to become an adult, as the impossible construction of the link to the big Other. At the end of this thesis we mention the Narcissus myth and the desiring subject’s destiny within a society which does not give the time to the desire to appear.

In a special way, children and adolescents begin in the "technological adventure" saw electronic games, which start to intervene directly in the production in new ways of subjectivities. The high investments in the industry of electronic games show that, far away from an idiom, that is an activity that settled down in practically everyone, what allows us and he/she demands to think her as a relevant subject for the Humanities and, especially, for the Social Psychology. This research is accomplished with intention of contemplating concerning the uses of the new technologies in the production of the contemporary subjectivity, investigating, especially, the expressions of power raised by the game of life simulation "The Sims" and other implications for their users’ sociability. He/she intends to examine, through interviews on line and personal, that it forms the feelings of power, possibly raised by the referred game, they affect the adolescents’ relationships with their pairs, as well as their perceptions and capacity of discernment concerning the virtual world and of the real world. This use the theoretical-critical referencial of the School of Frankfurt and contemporary authors, to example of Turkle, Lasch and Severiano. The methodological strategies used in the empiric research involved three stages, to know: collects of initials data in forums on the game; application of questionnaires, sent by e-mail to the users, and accomplishment of interviews on line. The data were analyzed initially quantitatively, with the software EPInfo, and later we proceeded to a qualitative analysis of the most relevant positionings, in articulation with the first ones. Our data confirm attributable elements to the that Lasch (1983) denominated of "Culture of the narcissism", in the measure in that the category "power/control" received a strong adhesion of the researched youths. They also reveal nuances different from this culture type, especially in what it concerns to the category "sociability", once those young ones still demonstrate the need of the other in his/her concrete reality, preferring it to those of the virtual world.
