Philanthropic Motivation : A Study of CSR in the Workplace

In the present study, the topic under scrutiny is how Philanthropic Corporate Social Responsibility plays a role within the workplace. This study is being presented due to the fact that CSR is often researched with the frame of reference of marketing, whereas the managerial perspective is not often considered. The research question addressed will take a managerial perspective on CSR and examine if implementing Philanthropic CSR only affects extrinsic factors, or if it also has an intrinsic effect on employee motivation. In this research, the questions undergoing discussion to support the study are 1) To what extent does CSR motivate employees? 2) What involvement level of CSR is required for employee motivation? 3) What level does CSR fit into on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs? This thesis focuses mainly on connecting Philanthropic CSR to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. Other supporting theories that will be used include: Herzberg’s Motivation Hygiene Theory, McGregor’s X and Y Theory, Self-Determination Theory, and Motivational Crowding Theory. To conduct the research needed, the authors have conducted a deductive study through a comparative design, obtaining qualitative data by the means of semi structured skype interviews. These interviews focus on American for-profit companies that have CSR in their strategy but focus on profit. The data collected has then been analyzed through a thematic approach. The information obtained suggests that Philanthropic CSR plays a role within the workplace, however, it is not seen as an incentive by employees. Moreover, an employee must be personally involved within the company’s CSR program to fully feel the effects that the program has to offer. This is due to the emotional investments made while participating in the said philanthropy. The conclusion found from this study is that Philanthropic CSR does have an intrinsic effect on employees because of the ‘feel good feeling’ they benefit from when they do participate in the Philanthropic CSR. However, to fully understand the effects of the motivational aspects, further research must be conducted.

The diploma thesis is dedicated to the countess and philanthropist S. V. Panina. It focuses mainly on her life and philanthropic activities. The first chapter contains the biography of S. V. Panina. The second chapter is devoted to the philanthropic activities of countess. The first part of this chapter elaborates on her project, which was implemented in pre-revolutionary St. Petersburg, namely the Ligovsky people's house. The second subchapter is devoted to the activities of S. V. Panina in Czechoslovakia. First, the operation and financing of the Russian people's house, called Russian Fireplace, is elaborated here. Subsequently, this part deals with the activities of S. V. Panina in the Executive Committee for the Organization of the Russian Culture Days in Czechoslovakia. The third subchapter focuses on the countess' charitable activities in the United States, where she left from Czechoslovakia. The last fourth part of the chapter is devoted to the countess' individual charitable activities.

The Effects of Social Information, Social Norms and Social Identity on Giving

Indiana University - Purdue University - Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This philanthropic studies thesis aims to “increase the understanding of philanthropy, improve its practice, and enhance philanthropic participation” (Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University Overview) by studying the effects of social information, social norms and social identity on giving. It connects philanthropic studies research with theoretical developments in motivations for giving in economics, nonprofit management, nonprofit marketing, consumer behavior, and social psychology. It utilizes personal observations as well as quantitative methods including experiments and surveys on multiple samples including donors, undergraduate students and samples of the U.S. population. It generates actionable and efficacious knowledge to improve the practice of philanthropy. It contributes to the formation and growth of the young field called philanthropic studies - in theory, in methodology and in practice. This thesis includes five chapters. Chapter I will explain how the research question, philosophy and methodology are selected. This discussion will be for the entire thesis. Specific research questions, hypotheses, research designs, findings and implications will be explained in the subsequent chapters. Chapter II demonstrates the immediate and long-term effects of social information on donations and its boundary conditions in existing nonprofit donors in two field experiments. Chapter III shows that the psychological mechanism through which social information influences subsequent giving is perceived descriptive social norms in one field survey of donors and one laboratory experiment on undergraduate students. Chapter IV investigates how social identity congruency moderates the effect of social information on donations. It reports three field experiments on donors and samples of the general U.S. population and two laboratory experiments on undergraduate students. It shows that donors give more money to a public radio station if told that a previous donor with a similar identity also made a large contribution. This effect is more likely to occur when donors have high collective identity esteem and when attention is focused on others. Each chapter provides original fundraising techniques developed from these studies. Chapter V concludes with a discussion of the theoretical, methodological and practical contributions of this thesis and suggests directions for future research in philanthropic studies, and philanthropic psychology in particular.

Perfil da oferta de serviços hospitalares e sua utilização nos hospitais filantrópicos em Piracicaba: uma análise do período de 2000 a 2004

The data was obtained by structured questionnaires and personal interviews made with hospital administrators, SES-SP Regional Director, and the Municipal Health Secretary of Piracicaba. The supply hospital services was measured by bed numbers, diversity and quantity of available biomedical equipment and Human Resources, and its utilization was measured by internments, surgeries and diagnosis tests, besides the indicators occupation rate and average length of stay. The characterization of financing sources was obtained by the hospital income distribution among SUS, private health care plans and other resources. These two philanthropic hospitals of the city are the only ones to serve SUS patients and in the regional area composed of 26 cities with a population of 1.377.753 inhabitants, there is only one small Municipal Hospital. 56% of the inhabitants in the city are covered by some private health plan, an average superior to Brazil’s average and São Paulo State average, denoting a strong presence of private financing. The results show that the supply hospital services in these establishments had little evolution in the period, with the increase of SUS beds and decrease of beds used by private health care plans and limited biomedical equipment growth. The analysis of average length of stay indicator by financier detailed by diagnostic groups of CID 10 revealed important differences that could limit the SUS services utilization. In the analysis period, the hospital services served besides Piracicaba, other 242 cities of different country states. For the interviewed people, even though the Municipal District showed small increase in bed and supply equipment, there still is a lack to serve the existing demand. The excess of cardiologic services was mentioned, mainly due to the transference of some cardiac procedures to University Hospitals, which should reduce the use od this service by the SUS in the Region. The interviewed people are aware of the presence of trend towards outpatient care and de-hospitalization movement due to incorporation of new technologies and medical procedures, cut in cost and the expansion of day-hospital services in the city.The selection of the most important indicators made by interviewers people was composed by the occupation rate, hospital infection rate, average length of stay and the number of surgeries made. There are two vacancy control centers, the Regional Health Direction DIR XV and the Municipal District, this last one being responsible for the urgent internment authorization of other cities at the Piracicaba hospitals. / A dissertação versou sobre a análise da oferta de serviços hospitalares e sua utilização nos hospitais filantrópicos no Município de Piracicaba no período de 2000 a 2004. Os métodos de coleta de dados utilizados foram por meio de questionários estruturados e de entrevistas com os administradores dos hospitais, da diretora responsável pela Direção Regional da SES-SP e do Secretário Municipal de Saúde de Piracicaba. A oferta de serviços hospitalares foi medida por meio do número de leitos, diversidade e quantidade de métodos diagnósticos disponíveis e recursos humanos, e sua utilização foi medida por meio das internações, cirurgias e exames de diagnóstico além dos indicadores taxa de ocupação e tempo médio de permanência. A caracterização das fontes de financiamento foi obtida pela distribuição das receitas dos hospitais entre o SUS, Planos de Saúde e outras fontes. Os dois hospitais filantrópicos do município são os únicos a fazerem atendimento SUS, e na área da Direção Regional, composta de 26 municípios com uma população de 1.377.753 habitantes, há apenas um único hospital municipal de pequeno porte. O município tem uma cobertura de 56% de habitantes vinculados a algum plano de saúde, media superior à do Brasil e do Estado de São Paulo, denotando forte presença do financiamento privado. Os resultados mostraram que a oferta de serviços hospitalares nesses estabelecimentos teve pequena evolução no período, com aumento de leitos SUS e redução de leitos utilizados por planos de saúde/particulares e limitado incremento de equipamentos. A análise do indicador tempo médio de permanência por financiador, detalhado por grupos de diagnósticos da CID 10, revelou diferenças importantes que podem limitar a utilização dos serviços pelo SUS. No período de análise, a prestação de serviços hospitalares atendeu além de Piracicaba outros 242 municípios de diversos estados do país. Na visão dos entrevistados apesar do município ter apresentado tímido incremento na oferta de leitos e equipamentos, ainda há carência para atender a demanda existente. O excesso de oferta de serviços de cardiologia foi mencionado, mormente devido a transferência de alguns procedimentos cardíacos para hospitais universitários, o que deve reduzir a utilização desse serviço pelo SUS no município. É percebida pelos entrevistados a presença dos movimentos de ambulatorização e desospitalização devido a incorporação de novas tecnologias e procedimentos médicos, à redução de custos e à expansão de serviços de hospital-dia no município. A seleção de indicadores mais importantes pelos entrevistados foi composta pela taxa de ocupação, taxa de infecção hospitalar, tempo de permanência e o número de cirurgias realizadas. Existem duas centrais de regulação de vagas, a da direção regional de saúde DIR XV e a do município, sendo esta última a responsável pelas autorizações de internação de urgência de outros municípios nos hospitais da cidade.

Cette recherche porte sur la présence d'une fondation philanthropique dans l'émergence des nouvelles sciences et technologies dans un pays non hégémonique : le cas de la Fondation Mexique – Etats-Unis pour la Science (FUMEC) dans l'émergence des micro et nanotechnologies au Mexique. Ce travail de recherche part d'une série d'observations des dynamiques du développement de ces technologies émergentes dans ce pays. Lors de ces observations, il a été noté une forte présence de la FUMEC dans ces processus et ceci a attiré l'attention de cette recherche sur les fonctions accomplies par cette fondation. Cette thèse questionne la modélisation des relations des acteurs traditionnellement pris en compte dans les processus des changements technologiques (Etat, université et industrie), car les organismes philanthropiques ont été négligés dans les études sur les changements technologiques. Ce travail propose donc d'élargir l'éventail des acteurs à prendre en compte dans les modèles théoriques de ces études ; il s'agit de prendre en compte les organismes philanthropiques et non gouvernementaux comme des acteurs centraux. Tout au long de ce texte, la thèse montre l'importance de la place et de l'action de la FUMEC dans l'installation des infrastructures, la création de réseaux scientifiques, la formation des ressources humaines, le transfert des connaissances, la commercialisation et la dissémination de la technologie des micro-systèmes au Mexique. L'analyse des fonctions et des actions des organismes philanthropiques dans ces processus ne confirme pas seulement l'importance de tels organismes dans les changements technologiques, mais il signale également leur influence sur les politiques scientifique et technologique dans les pays non hégémoniques / This doctoral thesis deals with the presence of a philanthropic foundation in the emergence of new sciences and technologies in a non-hegemonic country. The case of the United States – Mexico Foundation for Science (FUMEC) in the emergence of micro and nanotechnology in Mexico. This research work, part of a series of observations on the development dynamics of these emerging technologies in this country. During these observations, it has been pointed out a strong presence of the FUMEC in this has attracted the attention of this research on the functions performed by the foundation in these processes. This doctoral thesis questions the modeling of relations actors, traditionally taken into account in the processes of technological change (State, University and Industry), as philanthropic organizations have not been considered in the studies of technological change. This research proposed to extend the range of actors to take into account in theoretical models in these studies. In other words, this thesis proposes to take into account the non-governmental and philanthropic organizations as central players in technological changes. Throughout the text, this work shows the importance of the position and action of the FUMEC in the installation of infrastructure, creation of scientific networks, human resources training, knowledge transfer, commercialization and dissemination of microsystems technology in Mexico. The analysis of the philanthropic organizations functions and actions in these processes not only confirms the importance of these organisms, but also highlights the influence of these organisms in scientific and technological policies in non-hegemonic countries / Esta investigación de la tesis de doctorado trata sobre la presencia de una fundación filantrópica en la emergencia de nuevas ciencias y tecnologías en un país no hegemónico: el caso de la Fundación México – Estados Unidos por la Ciencia(FUMEC) en la emergencia de las micro y Nanotecnologías en México. Este trabajo de investigación, parte de una serie de observaciones de las dinámicas del desarrollo de estas tecnologías emergentes en este país. Durante estasobservaciones, ha sido señalada una fuerte presencia de la FUMEC y esto ha llamado la atención de esta investigación sobre las funciones desempeñadas por esta fundación en estos procesos. Esta tesis doctoral cuestiona la modelización de las relaciones de los actores tradicionalmente tomados en cuenta en los procesos de cambios tecnológicos (Estado, Universidad e Industria), ya que los organismos filantrópicos no han sido considerados. Este trabajo de investigación propone entonces ampliar el abanico de actores a tomar en cuenta en los modelos teóricos en estos estudios. En otras palabras, propone tomar en cuenta los organismos filantrópicos y no gubernamentales como actores centrales en los cambios tecnológicos. A lo largo del texto, la tesis muestra la importancia de la posición y de la acción de la FUMEC en la instalación de infraestructuras, la creación de redes científicas, la formación de recursos humanos, la transferencia de conocimientos, la comercialización y la diseminación de la tecnología de los microsistemas en México. El análisis de las funciones y de las acciones de los organismos filantrópicos en estos procesos no confirma solamente la importancia de este tipo de organismos, sino que también resalta la influencia de estos organismos en las políticas científica y tecnológica en los países no hegemónicos

Le point de vue des personnes touchées par le cancer quant aux interactions entre les équipes spécialisées en cancérologie et les organismes du tiers secteur

Les personnes touchées par le cancer (PTC) présentent des besoins de nature diverse. Les résultats de plusieurs études démontrent que la réponse à ces besoins n’est pas optimale et que des actions coordonnées et concertées entre les équipes spécialisées en cancérologie et les organismes du tiers secteur favoriseraient une complémentarité des soins et services offerts aux PTC et, ainsi, une meilleure réponse à leurs besoins. Dans ce contexte, cette étude s’intéresse au point de vue des PTC quant aux interactions entre les équipes spécialisées en cancérologie et les organismes du tiers secteur. Cette étude qualitative descriptive et interprétative a été réalisée auprès de dix femmes et un homme, touchés par le cancer. Les données ont été recueillies à l’aide d’entretiens individuels semi-dirigés. Les résultats obtenus à la suite de l’analyse thématique des données démontrent que les PTC perçoivent peu ou pas d’interactions entre les équipes spécialisées en cancérologie et les organismes du tiers secteur. L’insuffisance d’actions coordonnées, les informations offertes de manière passive ou informelle par les équipes spécialisées en cancérologie ainsi que les contraintes liées à l’accessibilité des services du tiers secteur expliquent l’invisibilité des interactions entre les secteurs, aux yeux des PTC. Des actions coordonnées entre les équipes spécialisées en cancérologie et les organismes du tiers secteur, des références personnalisées réalisées en fonction des besoins singuliers des PTC et un accompagnement personnalisé par un professionnel ou une autre PTC, sont souhaitées par les PTC. / People affected by cancer (PAC) have a variety of needs. The results of several studies show that the response to these needs is not optimal and that coordinated and concerted actions between specialized cancer teams and third-sector organizations would promote complementary care and services for PAC and thus better meet their needs. This study looks at the perspective of people affected by cancer regarding interactions between cancer teams and third sector organizations. This qualitative descriptive and interpretive study was conducted among ten women and one man affected by cancer. Data were collected using semi-structured individual interviews. The results obtained from the thematic analysis of data collected in individual interviews show that PAC perceive little or no interaction between cancer teams and organizations in the third sector. Insufficiency of coordinated action, information offered passively or informally by specialized cancer teams and constraints related to the accessibility of third sector services explain invisibleness of interactions between sectors in the eyes of PAC. Coordinated actions between specialized cancer teams and organizations in the third sector, personalized references made according to the unique needs of PAC, materialized by the presence of a "central" person or a pivotal nurse as well as support for professional navigation or another PAC, are desired by the PAC.

The Dilemmas of Bringing Your Culture With You: The Career Advancement Challenges of African-American Women Foundation Executives

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Grounded in leadership, cultural, communication, and gender studies, this dissertation investigates the challenges African-American women executives in the philanthropic foundation sector faced as they strive to have their culture legitimated within the culture of the workplace. Through the use of case study methodology, I examined the experiences of participants by conducting oral history interviews that traced their critical path to leadership. I also incorporated my own experiences in the field to further explore the connections between race, gender, and leadership styles in philanthropic organizations. The interviews and my own auto-ethnographic research explored the possible consequences of black executive women in the foundation world not being able to share aspects of their cultural lives in workplace networks and the impact of the critical exclusion of who they really are as whole human beings on the quality of their careers. An analysis of data collected from the interviews revealed key factors critical to the success of study participants. First was the presence of familial or close adults actively engaged in philanthropic activity during the participants’ formative years. Second was a strong influence of a faith tradition. Additionally, the date revealed that participants’ involvement in outside leadership roles, often tied to their racial and gender identities, were not capitalized on by employers. This study achieved several key outcomes. First, it afforded participants an opportunity to develop the personal satisfaction of expanding the body of knowledge related to leadership development within the philanthropic foundation sector. Additionally, by sharing their stories, these individuals were able to develop or strengthen mentorship relationships. Lastly, this study has the potential of being of significant benefit to the greater philanthropic foundation sector, since it worked towards the expansion of the body of knowledge specific to the issues of gender and cultural differences within the foundation sector.

The Praxis of Civil Society: Associational Life, the Politics of Civility, and Public Affairs in the Weimar Republic

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This dissertation analyzes the efforts to develop a pluralistic political culture and democratic practices of governance through the training of democratic leaders in Germany's first school of public affairs, the German School of Politics. The investigation of the thought-leaders that formed this school illustrates two main points. First, through the prism of the School, I detail the efforts to develop a conception of civil society that, by being grounded in civility, could retie social bonds and counter the brutalization of politics characteristic of the post-World War One years. By providing practical knowledge, courses in public affairs could not only free Germans from the blinders of ideologies, but also instill in them an ethos that would help viewing the political enemy as an opponent with an equal right to participate in the political process. Secondly, I point to the limits of trans-national philanthropy in supporting the development of civil society in young democracies. By analyzing the relationship between U.S. foundations and the School, I focus on the asymmetry that existed between American ideals of democracy and the realities of the German political system. This study thus focuses on the dynamics between the actions of institutions and organizations, and the broader social behaviors that constitute public life.

Challenges and potentials of channeling local philanthropy towards development and aocial justice and the role of waqf (Islamic and Arab-civic endowments) in building community foundations

Diese Arbeit bietet eine solide theoretische Grundlage zu Philanthropie und religiös motivierten Spendenaktivitäten und deren Einfluss auf Wohltätigkeitstrends, Entwicklungszusammenarbeit und einer auf dem Gedanken der sozialen Gerechtigkeit beruhenden Philanthropie. Untersucht werden dafür die Strukturen religiös motivierte Spenden, für die in der islamischen Tradition die Begriffe „zakat“, „Waqf“ oder im Plural auch „awqaf-“ oder „Sadaqa“ verwendet werden, der christliche Begriff dafür lautet „tithes“ oder „ushour“. Aufbauend auf diesem theoretischen Rahmenwerk analysiert die qualitative und quantitative Feldstudie auf nationaler Ebene, wie die ägyptische Öffentlichkeit Philanthropie, soziale Gerechtigkeit, Menschenrechte, Spenden, Freiwilligenarbeit und andere Konzepte des zivilgesellschaftlichen Engagements wahrnimmt. Um eine umfassende und repräsentative Datengrundlage zu erhalten, wurden 2000 Haushalte, 200 zivilgesellschaftliche Organisationen erfasst, sowie Spender, Empfänger, religiöse Wohltäter und andere Akteure interviewt. Die so gewonnen Erkenntnisse lassen aussagekräftige Aufschlüsse über philanthropische Trends zu. Erstmals wird so auch eine finanzielle Einschätzung und Bewertung der Aktivitäten im lokalen Wohltätigkeitsbereich möglich, die sich auf mehr als eine Billion US-Dollar beziffern lassen. Die Erhebung weist nach, dass gemessen an den Pro-Kopf-Aufwendungen die privaten Spendenaktivitäten weitaus wichtiger sind als auswärtige wirtschaftliche Hilfe für Ägypten. Das wiederum lässt Rückschlüsse zu, welche Bedeutung lokale Wohltätigkeit erlangen kann, wenn sie richtig gesteuert wird und nicht wie bislang oft im Teufelskreis von ad-hoc-Spenden oder Hilfen von Privatperson an Privatperson gefangen ist. Die Studie stellt außerdem eine Verbindung her zwischen lokalen Wohltätigkeits-Mechanismen, die meist auf religiösen und kulturellen Werten beruhen, und modernen Strukturen, wie etwa Gemeinde-Stiftungen oder Gemeinde-„waqf“, innerhalb derer die Spenden eine nachhaltige Veränderung bewirken können. Daher bietet diese Arbeit also eine umfassende wissenschaftliche Grundlage, die nicht nur ein besseres Verständnis, sondern auch den nachhaltiger Aus- und Aufbau lokaler Wohltätigkeitsstrukturen in Ägypten ermöglicht. Zentral ist dabei vor allem die Rolle lokaler, individueller Spenden, die beispielsweise für Stiftungen auf der Gemeindeebene eingesetzt, wesentlich zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung beitragen könnten – und das nicht nur in Ägypten, sondern in der gesamten arabischen Region. Der Wissenschaftlerin und einem engagierten Vorstand ist es auf dieser Grundlage gelungen, die Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) zu gründen, die nicht nur ein Modell für eine Bürgerstiftung ist, sondern auch das tradierte Konzept der „waqf“ als praktikable und verbürgte Wohlstätigkeitsstruktur sinnvoll weiterentwickelt. / This work provides a solid theoretical base on philanthropy, religious giving (Islamic zakat, ‘ushour, Waqf -plural: awqaf-, Sadaqa and Christian tithes or ‘ushour), and their implications on giving trends, development work, social justice philanthropy. The field study (quantitative and qualitative) that supports the theoretical framework reflects at a national level the Egyptian public’s perceptions on philanthropy, social justice, human rights, giving and volunteering and other concepts that determine the peoples’ civic engagement. The statistics cover 2000 households, 200 Civil Society Organizations distributed all over Egypt and interviews donors, recipients, religious people and other stakeholders. The numbers reflect philanthropic trends and for the first time provide a monetary estimate of local philanthropy of over USD 1 Billion annually. The survey proves that the per capita share of philanthropy outweighs the per capita share of foreign economic assistance to Egypt, which implies the significance of local giving if properly channeled, and not as it is actually consumed in the vicious circle of ad-hoc, person to person charity. In addition, the study relates local giving mechanisms derived from religion and culture to modern actual structures, like community foundations or community waqf that could bring about sustainable change in the communities. In sum, the work provides a comprehensive scientific base to help understand- and build on local philanthropy in Egypt. It explores the role that local individual giving could play in achieving sustainable development and building a new wave of community foundations not only in Egypt but in the Arab region at large. As a tangible result of this thesis, an innovative model that revives the concept of waqf and builds on the study’s results was created by the researcher and a dedicated board of trustees who succeeded in establishing Waqfeyat al Maadi Community Foundation (WMCF) that not only introduces the community foundation model to Egypt, but revives and modernizes the waqf as a practical authentic philanthropic structure.
