To feel good and perform well in sports during the menstrual cycle : a matter of knowledge and approach

Forss, AnnaClara, Lind, Mirella January 2019 (has links)
The aim of this study was to describe what female athletes do to feel and perform well in sports during their menstrual cycle. A qualitative method with open letters was used to collect data. The open letters were collected by the digital plattform www.enkät.se who ensured that the participants remained anonymous. Ten female athletes between 18–33 years old participated in the study and wrote the open letter which started with the sentence "I am now going to tell you what I do to feel and perform well in sports during my menstrual cycle…". The collected data was analyzed with a qualitative content analysis. Based on the analysis a main theme was created: Sports during the menstrual cycle - a matter of knowledge and approach, together with three sub-themes: Everyday routines of wellbeing, The female athletes’ performance requires empowerment and freedom of choice and The sports movement's responsibility to create the right conditions. The main theme together with the three sub-themes describes how the participants are dependent on themselves, coaches and social structures in order to feel and perform well. Common to all sub-themes is knowledge, which is the basis for being able to relate to the subject in a good way.

Güney-Frahm, Irem 02 May 2017 (has links)
This thesis deals with the question whether or not and to what extent microcredit programmes contribute to women’s empowerment. A qualitative analysis of the Turkish Grameen programme in Eskişehir, Western Anatolia, provides the empirical case study to address the question. The theoretical and methodological approaches to the concept of empowerment adapt and build on the capability approach, the sociological concept of ‘conduct of daily life’ and on the literature on gender and development and patriarchy in Turkey. In the empirical analysis, the study identifies three different approaches to women’s empowerment through microcredits that are compared, contrasted and discussed. In addition to the perspective of the participants themselves for whom empowerment is defined as an improved conduct of everday life, there is the author’s understanding of empowerment which is rooted in a perspective that is liberal-feminist yet critical of globalization. The third perspective is that of employees working for the microcredit institution who transmit their understanding of empowerment to the participating women. The results show that participants overall connect microcredits with positive experiences in spite of a number of problems that arise in the course of the programme. Moreover, employees see the programme very uncritically as women’s empowerment from their point of view consists primarily in enabling women to better provide for their families’ needs. From the author’s perspective, however, the results indicate a largely unchanged persistence of gender inequality marked by women’s marginalization on the labour market and in society as a whole.

This study is associated to a larger research project interested in understanding how morality and delicacy emerge and are dealt with in and through interaction. In the current study, we analyze recorded interactions at a Brazilian governmental toll free health helpline: Disque Saúde. The data analyzed consist specifically of calls made by females whose questions revolve around Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). The data was transcribed according to the conventions proposed by Jefferson (1984) and analyzed by means of Conversation Analysis (SACKS, 1992) and Membership Categorization Analysis (SACKS, 1992; KITZINGER, 2011) approaches. We analyze when and how the callers account for their actions, in particular, when they offer call takers justifications. We propose a new classification for the study of this phenomenon in sequentially relevant and non-sequentially relevant. Even though both types of justifications seem to be related to morality, they perform different actions in the interactions. Whereas the sequentially relevant justifications mostly account for: 1) the reason(s) for the call; 2) doubts; and 3) refusals to information offers made by the call takers, the non-sequentially relevant justifications account for: 1) callers’s means of contamination with HIV virus or exposure to risk factors of contamination; and 2) callers’ sexually related behavior. The nonsequentially relevantant justifications point to morality issues that cannot be explained by the sequential analysis proposed by conversational analytic methods; it also suggests “moral work” (DREW, 1998), as well as a negotiation of belonging to categories such as mother and wife, and the association with predicates which are usually associated to those categories. Our data indicate that the vulnerability of females to HIV is not only biological (as the infection of females by males is more probable than the opposite), but also social. Although AIDS has affected all social classes, the poorest females are those who have less conditions of changing the situations which put them at risk of contamination.

Digital gender divide and empowering women in the digital age : A critical approach in Iranian society

Hosami, Behshid January 2019 (has links)
Gender plays an important role in access to the ICTs and Internet. Even when both genders have almost equal access to the ICTs and online services, or similar literacy rates, women have a lower rate in technology related education, employment, income, and in social activities than men. This thesis focuses on the existing digital gender gap by identifying its key factors and trends and studying the role of Internet and ICTs in bridging this gap. In addition, to suggest improvements to empower women in the developing countries and especially in Iran. A qualitative research method was adopted and semi-structured interview with 5 Internet users who were purposely chosen, was conducted. The data were analyzed and interpreted with the help of Lichtman's 3C method. This research study has examined the possible gender digital divide among users of ICTs and Internet in Iran and by making use of the existed secondary data. The empirical findings are discussed and compared to the reviewed literature, which resulted to an arising framework for a better understanding of digital gap among women. This research gives an overview about the digital divide, with a focus specifically on the challenges women face in accessing the ICTs and Internet in this region. Current gender disparities and discrimination in Internet use are outlined and the obstacles hindering women’s access to the technology world are described. At the later stage, the research has a look at the potential opportunities for women’s participation in a global digital society along with a consideration of the initiatives that have been developed in order to mitigate the gender inequity in Iran.

KVINNLIGA PATIENTERS UPPLEVELSER AV FRÅGANOM VÅLD I NÄRA RELATIONER

Blank, Märit, Månson, Alma January 2019 (has links)
Background: Women that are victims of intimate partner violence seek care more often, but not all of them receive the care that they need. Caregivers can lack knowledge and preparedness to identify abused women. Undetected intimate partner violence can result in negative consequences for both the woman and society. Aim: To describe women’s experiences of being asked about violence in intimate partnership, how they want to be questioned and how they felt when they did not get the question. Method: An integrative literature review based on 10 qualitative articles from the databases PubMed and CINAHL. Results: The categories that emerged was; experiences of being questioned, experiences of different approaches, and experiences of not being asked. From these categories, subcategories were built that gathered patients’ thoughts and feelings. Most of the women appreciated being asked about intimate partner violence, but some felt scared when they got the question. Women who were not asked felt that they were not prioritized. Caregivers should define abuse, because the abuse could have been normalized. The caregivers’approach when questioning and the environment are significant if the women choose to admit they are exposed to violence. The question should be asked at different occasions. Conclusion: The question about intimate partner violence is appreciated, but it can also lead to a feeling of fear when answering the question. It is important that nurses dare to ask about violence exposure at different occasions and that the women are well treated in a safe environment. Women can experience that they are not prioritized if no one asks the question.

Women’s Participation in Peace Negotiations and the Inclusion of Gender Provisions

Tengbjer Jobarteh, Isolde January 2019 (has links)
Are peace agreements more likely to include gender provisions if women participate in the peace negotiations? The international community, national governments and civil societies around the world have assumed that women’s inclusion in peace negotiations result in higher quality peace agreements, where women’s interests are better taken into consideration. To date, there is a lack of empirical underpinning of the assumption. This study uses a twofold research design, combining statistical and qualitative methods to examine the interrelation between women’s descriptive and substantive representation in peace negotiations in the post-Cold War era. First, the statistical analysis suggests that peace agreements are more likely to include at least one gender provision referring to women’s rights and security if women participate in the negotiation. At the same time, the agreements are not more likely to address a higher number of different areas for increased rights and security measures for women. Second, the qualitative analysis examining the mechanisms shows that there is no guarantee that women will push for gender provisions, but that their particular experiences and interests in conflict, and the expectations from others give them strong reasons to do so. Important factors for women to successfully push for gender provisions have to do both with their individual will and personal ability, and external factors relating to the presence of traditional gender norms and the power balance between men and women in the country of conflict.

REPRODUCTIVE AUTONOMY: The Context of Pregnancy Intention, A Global to Local Approach

Feld, Hartley C. 01 January 2018 (has links)
Globally, in low and middle-income countries 4 out of every 10 pregnancies is reported to be unintended. Having an unintended pregnancy increases the risk of maternal and infant morbidity and mortality, preterm birth, low birth weight, and decreases rates of breast-feeding. The United States (U.S.) consistently has some of the highest rates of preterm birth, infant and maternal mortality of all high-income countries and 45% of all pregnancies in the U.S. are reported to be unintended. The etiology of these outcomes and their relationship to pregnancy intention are complex and multifactorial, but we know this disproportionately effects women living in poverty both in the U.S. and globally. When couples have the knowledge, access, and power to decide when and whether to become pregnant they are more likely to seek preconception care, thus increasing the likelihood of planned pregnancies leading to improved maternal and child health outcomes. Primary prevention strategies to improve maternal/child health outcomes in the U.S. include sexual and reproductive health considerations such as increasing access to birth control. Globally, strategies include expanding access, as well as focusing on the empowerment of women and improving gender social norms. Focusing on community level norms and individual empowerment can lead to greater reproductive autonomy, which in turn leads to an increase in the uptake of birth control and family planning. This broader consideration of multiple levels of power or autonomy is often lacking in approaches taken in the U.S. More information is needed about the social context and determinants of pregnancy intention in our communities, particularly of women living in poverty. The purposes of this dissertation were to 1) to describe reproductive autonomy and family planning challenges in a population of marginalized Ecuadorian women; 2) develop a conceptual framework of reproductive autonomy from the global literature; 3) to validate a shortened form of an interpersonal violence scale used in a study of low-income pregnant women in Kentucky; and finally 4) to investigate the association between pregnancy intention and individual, interpersonal and community factors of impoverished women living in Kentucky. The qualitative study of women in Ecuador identified barriers and facilitators to family planning in a low-resource community. The major themes that emerged were that women’s autonomy was limited by men, shame was ‘keeping women quiet’, systems failed women, and as women aged they were able to build resilience in spite of these challenges. Many reported reproductive coercion, gender-based violence, and regret. Those who could leave unsupportive partners and found social support were more effective at planning their pregnancies. Evidence supports these themes are relatively common in the global literature, particularly of women living in poverty. The comprehensive review of these findings was used to develop a conceptual framework of reproductive autonomy. The Socio-Ecological Model was used to organize the data based on individual, interpersonal or community level determinants of pregnancy intention and reproductive autonomy. This new conceptual model, called the Power and Reproductive Autonomy (PARA) model, was used as a guide to analyze multiple levels of data in a secondary analysis of pregnant women living in poverty in Kentucky. Prior to this secondary analysis study, a measure used in the parent study needed to be validated. A short form of the Women’s Experience with Battering (WEB) scale was found to be psychometrically valid to measure of the impact of intimate partner violence for this population. Findings from the secondary analysis included high rates of unintended pregnancy (66%), and women with unintended pregnancy were more likely to report exposure to interpersonal violence, poor social support, and anxiety at the bivariate level. At the community (county) level those with an unintended pregnancy were more likely to live in counties with fewer social associations, and in rural communities. None of the access, gender equity, income inequality, or violence variables were correlated to pregnancy intention. In the final multilevel model, controlling for demographic variables, only being unmarried and answering the question in English were significant predictors of unintended pregnancy. The rate of social associations in a county was marginally significant with pregnancy intention, in that the presence of social associations appeared to decrease the likelihood of unintended pregnancy. Operationalizing the PARA framework to examine predictors of unintended pregnancy in Kentucky proved to not yield expected results; county level variables related to access, gender equity, and violence were not found to be significantly correlated. Women answering the question in Spanish had significantly higher rates of planned pregnancy, which is a new finding. Having opportunities for social engagement also seemed to be a protective factor in preventing unintended pregnancies. Limitations of cross-sectional data also make it a challenge to capture cumulative life stressors which could contribute to poor reproductive autonomy. Future studies may yield a greater understanding of the social context of pregnancy intention if more interpersonal data related specifically to reproductive autonomy are in the model, such as reproductive coercion, relationship power, communication, and contraceptive decision making. Additionally, further examination of structures or systems that provide economic opportunities in the community is a promising area of reproductive autonomy and pregnancy intention research.

Contribution à l'identification des potentialités entrepreneuriales des femmes entrepreneures : Analyse des antécédents et des facteurs contextuels des créatrices d'entreprise Djiboutienne / Contribution to identifying the entrepreneurial potential of women entrepreneurs : Analysis of the antecedents and contextual factors of Djiboutian business creators

Mahamoud Rayaleh, Abdourahman 15 November 2017 (has links)
The primary aim of this thesis is to first identify and classify entrepreneurial traits so as to distinguish those surveyed on the basis of the perception they have of their entrepreneurial potentialities. Aside from this primary aim, the following work seeks to analyse personal and contextual factors likely to contribute to the acquisition and development of entrepreneurial traits of women entrepreneurs both within Djibouti and Africa at large. We have tried to compare entrepreneurial typologies of those who are entrepreneurs and those who are not. In view of achieving adequately the aims of this thesis, we first establish a synthesis of the main works regarding the paradigms of traits and facts of the entrepreneur so as to better reproduce Gasse’s conceptual model. In the second part of the work, the field work is focused on the exploitation of the findings of a survey conducted among 208 female entrepreneurs and 10 others who were not entrepreneurs. In this survey, a questionnaire, of 125 items excluding identifying factors and based on 17 dimensions distributed among 5 axes (motivations, aptitudes, attitudes, interests and behaviors), was used. Data processing is conducted according to the descriptive statistics techniques (basic sorting and cross sorting) and multi-dimensional ones (correlation analysis, principal component analysis, hierarchal classification, discriminative analysis). The study was strengthened by semi-structured interviews conducted among 10 female entrepreneurs. The results of the analysis confirmed that, unlike non-entrepreneurs, entrepreneurs have more capabilities and entrepreneurial skills. Moreover, results also indicate that entrepreneurial potentialities are mainly linked to the level of education and prior experience among young entrepreneurs and to a host of environmental factors (family circle, circle of friends, religious beliefs, and cultural context) as far as older entrepreneurs are concerned. Therefore, our study tends to show the importance of belonging to a family environment or having a circle of friends with a long-standing entrepreneurial tradition in the process of business creation. The results of these various methods of data processing reinforces the initial conceptual model and open perspectives on ways of assisting Africa’s women entrepreneurship often subjected to contextual burdens.

Sporrenstrand, Johanna January 2007 (has links)
<p>At the Women’s House in Örebro, a children’s project has started where the work method “Oasen” [Oasis] model has been developed by two children’s educationists. The aim of this study is, with the “Oasen” model as a starting point, to deepen the knowledge of (1) how to meet children’s central needs while staying at a Women’s House and (2) what the “Oasen” model may contribute to the children. The theoretical framework consists of a cognitive approach to the progress of children experiencing domestic violence and a presentation of conceptions concerning children’s needs. It was necessary to identify children’s essential needs while staying at a Women’s House, to be able to answer the aim of the study. A qualitative research method has been conducted with semistructured interviews as the method of data collection. The respondents consisted of the two children’s educationists working with the “Oasen” model. The study results in three different characteristic themes, in which the children’s needs can be supplied; the significance of the practical pedagogy, individual flexibility as a fundamental structure and striving of continuity. The “Oasen” model can meet several of the essential needs, such as; routines and continuity, safety, identification of further needs, individual treatment from a children’s perspective and above all; the need of making the children’s experience valid. On the contrary, the “Oasen” model cannot be considered meeting the needs of relation support. The conclusion drawn by this study shows a possible flow where the “Oasen” model may contribute to intensively making children’s experiences valid, which enables them to create the necessary conditions to process the violent experience and obtain an increased cognitive understanding.</p> / <p>Vid kvinnohuset i Örebro har ett barnprojekt startats där två barnpedagoger utvecklat en arbetsmetod som kallas Oasenmodellen.

Papperslöst motstånd : Om strategier och praktiker i post-välfärdens marginaler / Undocumented resistance : On strategies and practice in the margins of a post-welfare society

Matsdotter Henriksson, Moa January 2008 (has links)
<p>The post-modern western city is going through two central changes in the organization of paid labour. One is the switch from production of goods to production of services, and the other is the increasing rift between well-paid labour with permanent jobs, and temporarily employed workers with low wages. Both of these processes are rasified and gendered, and strike harder against women, young persons and people of emigrant background. The flexible capitalism creates an informalization of the economy, breaking with earlier regulations of the labour markets, in which workers also need to find informal strategies in their individual and collective struggles. In this paper, I search for these “new” experiences of living and working in late capitalist society, by doing open interviews with three women of Latin-American origin, working without official permission (without documents) in the informal economy of Stockholm. Analyzing their narratives, I look for the agency and resistance that, according to my theoretical perspective, is part of everyday life of all suppressed subjects. I come to the conclusion that irregular systems of recruitment and other forms of interdependency could be useful for other groups of precarious workers. The interviewed women also use strategies such as fantasizing about a reversed world or focusing their thoughts on the future, and deceiving or avoiding the power(full), to cope with their everyday work situations and the contradictory class mobility they experienced in the migration. However, these strategies often reproduce an acceptance of power more than a resistance to it, and show us how the capitalism works as an hegemonic ideology incorporated in us all.</p>
