The concept of sin in the theologies of Ellen G White and Leonardo Boff : a comparative study

Zvandasara, Nkosiyabo, 1961- 03 1900 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to compare the concept of sin in the theologies of Ellen G. White and Leonardo Boff. Chapter 1 examines Ellen G. White's concept of sin. White's historical and theological backgrounds coupled with her use of the "great controversy" motif provide a better grasp of her understanding of sin. White defines sin as the transgression of God's Law. She views sin to comprise at least two dimensions, namely, the individual and the social. White regards these two aspects of sin to have equal significance. White's detailed treatment of the sanctuary teaching also highlights the two dimensions of sin. In Chapter 2 Boff' s idea of sin is investigated. Boff' s historical background, which exposed him to the poor, influenced his perception of sin. Boff's theological background together with his familiarity with Karl Marx's social analysis prompted Boff to define sin as the negation of God's love in a human history bedevilled by class conflict. Boff views sin to have the individual and social dimensions. Yet, in terms of importance, Boff believes that the social dimension of sin is more consequential than the individual one. In Chapter 3 White's and Boff s views on sin are compared. From this comparison it is evident that both White and Boff recognize the bipolarity of sin. Both seem to agree that christians should take an active role in correcting social evils because love for God is manifested by how we relate to our neighbor. Boff devotes less space to the individual aspect of sin than White. Chapter 4 shows that White's theological tradition has a lot to learn from Boff and his tradition and also vice versa. An awareness of the current priestly ministry of Christ evident in White's theology could help Boff to bring some balance to his stance on the social and the individual dimension of sin. Boff' s use of Marx's social analysis should also help Seventh-day Adventists, the inheritors of White's theology, not to interpret White's theology of sin only along individualistic lines while overlooking its social dimension. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / D.Th. Конструкција идентитета у књижевном делу Растка Петровића / Konstrukcija identiteta u književnom delu Rastka Petrovića / The Identity Construction in Rastko Petrović’sLiterary Work

Stevanović Kristina 25 March 2015 (has links)

/
identifikacijske procese unutar subjekta.
strepnju i svest o konstitutivnoj ambivalenciji.
konstituenti njegovog identiteta (pol, rod, rasa, nacija, klasna, verska i
pripadanjem. Istovremeno, identitet sugeriše istost i podržava neki oblik
pluralitet u teorijskim pristupima i kritičkim praksama nužan, upravo zbog
2
rodni i narativni identitet, tačnije, modusi njihovih konstrukcija. U tom smislu,
paradigmu kulturološke i rodne liminalnosti.
Iscrpna anliza rodnog identiteta, odnosno maskuliniteta, ističe
„postajanja“ muškarcem izuzetno složen, obeležen protivurečnostima i strepnjom.
dijalog u kome pripadnici manjinskih/marginalnih kultura i subkultura postaju
ravnopravni sagovornici.
/
This thesis aims to determine the crucial points of identity formation in Rastko
Petrović’s poetics with the intention to verify the idea that Rastko Petrović’s work
anticipates the modern understanding of identity as a construct which emerges from the
discourse of power with its identificational processes within the subject. Rastko Petrović’s
oeuvre is an excellent example of the fact that identity represents a complex and dynamic
network of identity constituents that constantly intertwine, and, in the places where the
contacts happen, they form ambivalent subject positions from which the author narrates his
ontological fear and the awareness of the constitutive ambivalence. By including some of
the methodological premises from the field of cultural studies (such as marginalization,
transgression, liminality) into the research of Petrović’s authentic avant-garde poetic
strategies, the thesis shows that, while searching for his inner self, Petrović was epitomizing
his poetical self, thus forming a hybrid and liminal identity in the dynamic field of
antagonistic discourses that constantly intersect.
Therefore, we can say that the poetic, philosophical and aesthetic sources of
Petrović’s work are found in the idea that self (what is), as well as the constituents of his
identity (sex, gender, race, nation, class, religious beliefs, professional orientation…) are
understood as processing cathegories constantly exposed to changes. What is more, it can
be said that Rastko Petrović clears the path for the modern, antiessetialist interpretations of
self as flux (that which is a flow, which changes constantly) within the symbolic network, i.e.
discoursive practices. In this way, arises the possiblity of interpretation of the notion, or the
idea of identity, as strategic, or positional, meaning that in Petrović’s works identity is
always relationally constructed and strongly marked by non-belonging. At the same time,
identity means sameness and supports at least some kind of unity feebly fulfilling the
onthological void.
Methodological foundation of this thesis is found in the assumption that the plurality
in critical and theoretical approaches is necessary, precisely because of the complexity and
ambivalence of identity, the term whose scope and range are interdisciplinary positioned. At
the same time, the thesis examines various aspects of identity with the objective to
preserve and enhance the awareness about the interaction between the constituents of
4
identity and theoretical and critical practices that deal with it. Cultural, gender and narrative
identities or, more precisely, the modes of their constructions, form the central part of the
thesis. In this sense, this thesis shows that the poetics, but also the life of Rastko Petrović,
represent a paradigm of cultural and gender liminality, while the life on the constant move
proves to be crucial in the creation of identity which is formed as a hybrid one because of
many layers coming from various cultures. A detailed analysis of gender identity or, more
precisely, masculinity, stresses the subversive potential of Petrović’s work when juxtaposed
to patriarchal, logocentric, binary cultural matrix. Rastko Petrović expresses an awareness of
the ideological character of the gender role he was assigned with; therefore, the process of
“becoming” a man is a highly complex one, marked with contradictions and fear. A separate
cluster of questions that inevitably appear with introspection is found in language, since
writer is compelled to search for the proofs of his existence in the language and in the
notions which are also a product of discourse that does not approve of the alternative
masculinity.
The interpretation of narrative identity as ipseity, used in this work, as well as the
introduction and constitution of self as a meta-categorical Other, marked the importance of
cultural dialog which Rastko Petrović undoubtedly strived for. It is a dialog where the
members of minority cultures and subcultures are equal participants. At the same time, the
exchange of cultural gifts provides the potential for a privileged status of agens in creation
of one’s own culture, and also in active mapping of the world culture.

La vie des autres. Sophie Calle et Annie Ernaux, artistes hors-la-loi

Wroblewski, Ania 12 1900 (has links)
This dissertation analyzes how contemporary French artist Sophie Calle and contemporary French writer Annie Ernaux transgress the discursive, aesthetic, and social boundaries between public and private life. Taking a feminist perspective and drawing on theories of everyday life, this dissertation asks: what liberties are the female artist and writer permitted today? Where, how and by whom are the ethical limits of creative practice established? In light of often stereotypical literary and artistic representations of the female criminal, the first chapter examines the accusations of obscenity, shamelessness and indecency levelled against Calle and Ernaux by their critics. The following three chapters identify the diverse, innovative and subversive ways in which Calle and Ernaux question accepted perceptions of femininity in order to seize creative freedom: they assume the distinct and tactical positions of flâneuses, heart-broken women avenging their ex-lovers, and theorists manipulating the reception of their own works. Together, these four chapters trace the artwork’s resonance in the public sphere, insist on the fruitful relationship that exists between a work of art and its frame, and consider the ethos of the artist as well as that of art. Sophie Calle’s and Annie Ernaux’s practices suggest that in order to achieve creative autonomy, art and writing must function outside of the constraints of moral, ethical, social and even civil laws. By examining instances in which artists, writers, curators and publishing houses have been subject to lawsuits in France since 2010, the conclusion of this dissertation studies a recent increase in the litigation of art and outlines some of the limits of representation as defined by the law.

Le mur dans l'art contemporain : étude phénoménologique et géopolitique / The wall in contemporary art : phenomenological and geopolitical study

Ganivet, Élisa 25 June 2013 (has links)
In the 21st century our image of a globalized world seems a priori paradoxical to the heavy increase in barriers designed to create or maintain divisions. We will focus on the artistic interpretation resulting from this paradox in the context of geopolitics, history and social situation. How and why the Wall should make think the artists? In a first step, historical development broadly reports the features and contexts of our phenomenal object. Then, effective phenomenology mainly refers to the Berlin Wall; this for an eventual metaphor to the two others studied objects-walls: the one located in Israel and Palestine, the other located between Mexico and the United States. Understanding of the Real is qualified by the sovereignty of States, understanding of the Symbolic via territory and cultural identity, and the realm of the Imaginary by the relationship with others and with oneself. The confrontation to the border (limologie) related to the strategy of the wall (teichos), would reveal an imbalance of principles of universality. Eventually, globalization as an exchange of interests is the one that would promote the existence of the object-wall; and a hyperreal perception of the object would be more the result from artists foreign to the phenomenon.

La bande dessinée autobiographique francophone (1982-2013) : Transgression, hybridation, lyrisme / French autobiographical comics (1982-2013) : Transgression, hybridation, lyrism

Mao, Catherine 26 June 2014 (has links)
Born in USA during the 70's, autobiographical comics blossomed later in France : endowed with a strong self consciousness, it happened to be structured from a collective or editorial point of view in the 90's. This syncretic genre wasn't obvious a priori, because it seems to originate in itself a failure with other forms of the ninth art, especially adventures, science-fiction or entertainment, in other terms with what stands for comic strips purposes in most people mind. The writing of the self may provide spontaneously tools for an opening up : breaking, hybridization and lyrism appear to be three ways to enlarge the traditional area of comic strips. Searching for new creative balances, the author has studied the vexed topic of self-portrait. Usually considered as the art of character, comic strips enforce the art cartoonist to solve equations that first seem insoluble and to invent tricks that we owe to describe : self-portrait hybridizes with representation of the self, identity with otherness, reality with fiction. And that is because autobiographical comic strips introduces a whole change of paradigm in the order of representation and narration : from this point of view, autobiography offers a thread allowing to travel all over history and modernity of the ninth art.

Investigating consumer-brand relationships

Birk, Matthias Maximilian 04 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation consists of five articles concerned with different aspects of consumer-brand relationships. Article 1 looks at what makes consumers consider a brand in the first place, the precondition for a brand to establish a relationship with a consumer. Article 2 deals with sustaining consumer-relationships and the role of satisfaction in retaining customers. Article 3 looks at whether consumers stay with the brand in the case of a relationship problem, actively work to sustain the relationship or silently let it deteriorate. It shows that relationship norms constitute an important factor in how consumers react to such negative incidents in a relationship. Article 4 investigates the effect of negative brand information on consumers’ attitudes and article 5 develops communication strategies for companies to employ when negative brand incidents occur.

FORA DO JARDIM! UMA LEITURA PSICANALÍTICA DE GÊNESIS 3 / Outside the garden! A psychoanalytical reading of Genesis 3

Vergara, Elias Mayer 28 February 2005 (has links)

No. of bitstreams: 1 Elias Mayer Vergara.pdf: 1579647 bytes, checksum: f936462ff4df46e87fe2ac082592fe0e (MD5) Previous issue date: 2005-02-28 / Genesis 3 will be approached here as a Hebrew myth and will serve as a case study in which we seek to show that psychoanalysis offers a different view in the understanding of the polysemy that exists in myths. According to anthropology and psychology, myths carry the human archetypes. These are couched in symbolic language and open up the polysemy of the myths. In the myth of Genesis 3, sin and the fall are significants resultant from a monosemic hermeneutic that has dogmatically legitimated the existence of the priest and of the church. The symbolic element of the serpent representative of a divinity competes with the divinity Yahweh through a transgressive project which is victorious and liberates the human beings to go beyond the garden. It is outside of this logic that the first sexual relationship between Adam and Eve occurs. In this way they have the pleasure of completing each other and becoming creative Gods. In a new focus derived from a polissemic reading, Eve s transgression can supply the archetypal energy necessary for a prophetic vocation awakening the heroic self that exists in all mankind. It is in the interval between great powers that the human being exercises freedom and makes himself divine.

It proposes its objective as an approach of a socio-legal transgression phenomenon, focusing the subjective senses of this young man with criminal activity at the same time, using dialectical logic as a method of understanding reality. It is based on an objective and subjective research of the active and living process with the purpose of producing something new, trying to overcome knowledge committed to a critical and alternative psychology (Ozella, 2003b), as well as contributing to its analysis. Focusing on subjectivity, it approaches from a qualitative angle the constituent processes, taking into consideration the plasticity of the subjective phenomenon. It aims at a non-pathological view of human development, perceiving it as historical. The research took place in the historical and situational context of the city of Brasilia and looks towards a discussion of the forms of subjectivity in social life created by the differentiated story of this adolescent in conflict with the law, shaping the research as a case study . The interview, guided by the concept of conversation (González Rey, 2005a) is the principal instrument of data collection. In order to understand the subjective senses of this young man with a history of social and legal transgression, the study uses the approach of Qualitative Epistemology (González Rey, 2002). The interpretative processes produced three clusters of meanings: the social transgression impregnated in his life story; the strategies of subjective reconstruction and the process of assimilating what was learned. It analyzes social transgression as a fighting process emerging from the strange subject situated in human dregs as an activity interfacing with the production of meanings in the young man s life, and constituting the subjective configuration. Transgression marks the life story of this young man, connected by cultural constructions with deep transformations, subjective and objective, in his understanding of himself / Este estudo sob a abordagem da Psicologia Sócio-Histórica trabalha a problemática de um jovem identificado, jurídico e socialmente, como algoz e vítima da violência.

De la construction des identités féminines : Regards sur la littérature francophone de 1950 à nos jours / Construction of women's identities : Perspectives on French speaking literature from 1950 to nowadays

Barthelmebs-Raguin, Hélène 17 November 2012 (has links)
The study of different representations, whether at a social, body or linguistic level, leads us to question the very concept of identity in literature. That “portmanteau word” – “mot-valise” in the meaning set out by Jean Petitot-Cocorda – belongs to Patriarchy, which means that the notion of identity itself has been (culturally) constructed by men for men, and the very word identity belongs to the semantic and existentialist masculine world. When we try to define feminine/female identity, we are trapped by the language constructed by patriarchal culture: the notion of identity is relevant for the Masculine and cannot be autonomously applied to women, since it has not been thought out for them in the first place. Therefore we reach a deadlock, as it were, when seeking a fixed, universal identity of women. This thesis will explore the different prisms through which French-speaking female writers put women’s identities into words and set them into tension so as to rethink the very concept of identity. Such process started in the 1950s with the publication of Le Deuxième sexe (1949) by Simone de Beauvoir, which marked the beginning of anti-essentialist studies. In the panorama of the terminology used in Gender studies, our attention will focus on Women’s literature, which implies claiming the existence of specific women’s identities from a differentialist feminist viewpoint. Female writers belonging to that category tend to analyze how the Feminine is conveyed into words in the text, to embody it, through a peculiar aesthetic. Thus woman’s identity in literature is based on polysemy and plurality, leading to an “open” identity, inscribed “actively” in the text by women writers (themes, narrative structures, etc.) and “passively” (for example, through a feminine use of language, the presence of the female writer’s body in the text, etc.). We have to shift feminist perspectives in order to achieve a more comprehensive feminine definition, in which text and writer are indissociable. The female authors included in our corpus (Corinna S. Bille, Nina Bouraoui, Assia Djebar, Jacqueline Harpman, Anne Hébert, Alice Rivaz, Gabrielle Roy and Marguerite Yourcenar) strive to develop a real literary aesthetic which is at odds with a rule-complying social model. From that viewpoint, women are not reduced to their essence, that is to their biological sex. The Feminine, as it is considered by our authors, is the result of a process of reflection and self-exploration, involving traditional societal issues (as figured in the themes dealt with), as well as an innovative literary language, capable of going beyond the classical dichotomy between masculine and feminine. Therefore, the aim is no longer to take possession of the “language of the other”, but to find one’s own. Therefore, we are distant from the patriarchal archetype constructing, and pre-establishing, fixed identities for women’s existence and writing. As we will see, such identities are no longer inscribed in the tradition of the objects “women”: they try to forge a new object in their writing, and in so doing they end up redefining their genre. In order to make up for the lack of “identity landmarks”, they resort to specific feminine features (oral language, nature, sexuality, etc.) so as to reach a definition of a Whole. The aim is no longer to write like men or against men, but to write women out of the patriarchal language by introducing in their texts those feminine elements capable of building a multifaceted feminine identity.
