Violences et justice dans les cours de récréation à l'école élémentaire / Violences and justice in the school playgrounds at primary school

Cette recherche interroge, dans une perspective pragmatique, la teneur des disputes entre pairs dans les cours de récréation à l'école élémentaire. Le régime de dispute en violence (Boltanski, 1990), caractérisé par des épreuves de force engageant exclusivement la force des personnes constitue le pivot de notre recherche. Comment et sous quelles conditions les interactions enfantines basculent-elles dans le régime de dispute en violence ou inversement sortent-elles de ce régime ? A l'aide d'une méthodologie fondée sur une approche ethnographique (observations et entretiens semi-scénarisés) et des questionnaires soumis aux écoliers, nous avons été en mesure de caractériser les formes émergentes de ce régime de dispute en violence, révélant ainsi une violence protéiforme ne se limitant pas au seul phénomène du harcèlement. Nous avons démontré que les écoliers recourent à des normes corporelles spécifiques et à des principes issus du monde domestique et du monde civique en vue de stabiliser l'ordre social en récréation et peuvent, sous certaines conditions, employer la violence comme un dispositif visant à contrecarrer les menaces pesant sur ces normes et principes. La compétence à s'extraire du régime de violence est apparue fortement corrélée aux dispositifs pédagogiques en place dans les écoles et à la grandeur que les élèves accordent aux enseignants ainsi qu'aux justifications et dispositifs que ces derniers emploient. La grandeur accordée à ces dispositifs et à la figure enseignante s'est enfin révélée, au fil de l'analyse comme étant étroitement imbriquée à la grandeur politique et civique que les enseignants accordent à l'écolier. / This sociological research deals with arguments among children in the school playground at primary school and follows a pragmatic sociological approach. The violent argument regime (Boltanski, 1990), is characterised by power struggles, that exclusively involves people strenght, without any principles. This violent argument regime is the centre of this research. How, and under which conditions peer interactions can get out of that regime? Using a methodology built on an ethnographic approach (observations and interviews based on scenarios) and on questionnaries to pupils, we've been able to characterise the emerging forms of the violent regime, and we showed the existence of a multifaceted violence at elementary school that can't be reduced merely to schoolbullying : this analysis's questionning the psychological approach of schoolbullying at school and discards the portraits of pupils who are either a persecutor or a victim : they can be both of them. Furthermore, pupils use physical norms and principles of justice that come from the domestic and the civic spheres in order to regulate the social order in the school playground and to get out of the violent regime. However, they can also, in the name of those principles, use violence as a device which enable them to stem the threats to those same principles. Moreover, the pupils ability to get out of the violence regime is linked to the teaching devices in the schools and to pupils perception of the teachers and the regulations that teachers use – or don't use. Some teaching devices could help pupils to get out of the violent argument regime and could restructure pupils principles and norms of justice.

The internal structure of consciousness

Our understanding of the physical world has evolved drastically over the last century and the microstructure described by subatomic physics has been found to be far stranger than we could previously have envisaged. However, our corresponding model of experience and its structure has remained largely untouched. The orthodox view conceives of our experience as made up of a number of different simpler experiences that are largely independent of one another. This traditional atomistic picture is deeply entrenched. But I argue that it is wrong. Our experience is extraordinarily rich and complex. In just a few seconds we may see, hear and smell a variety of things, feel the position and movement of our body, experience a blend of emotions, and undergo a series of conscious thoughts. This very familiar fact generates three puzzling questions. The first question concerns the way in which all these different things are experienced together. What we see, for example, is experienced alongside what we hear. Our visual experience does not occur in isolation from our auditory experience, sealed off and separate. It is fused together in some sense. It is co-conscious. We may then ask the Unity Question: What does the unity of consciousness consist in? The second question is the Counting Question: How many experiences does a unified region of consciousness involve? Should we think of our experience at a time as consisting in just one very rich experience, in a handful of sense-specific experiences, or in many very simple experiences? How should we go about counting experiences? Is there any principled way to do so?The third and final question, the Dependency Question, concerns the degree of autonomy of the various different aspects of our unified experience. For example, would one's visual experience be the same if one's emotional experience differed? Is the apparent colour of a sunset affected by the emotional state that we are in at the time? I offer a new answer to the Unity Question and argue that it has striking implications for the way that we address the Counting Question and the Dependency Question. In particular, it supports the view that our experience at a time consists in just one very rich experience in which all of the different aspects are heavily interdependent.

Lösungsoperatoren für Delaysysteme und Nutzung zur Stabilitätsanalyse

In diese Dissertation werden lineare retardierte Differentialgleichungen (DDEs) und deren Lösungsoperatoren untersucht. Wir stellen eine neue Methode vor, mit der die Lösungsoperatoren für autonome und nicht-autonome DDEs bestimmt werden. Die neue Methode basiert auf dem Pfadintegralformalismus, der aus der Quantenmechanik und von der Analyse stochastischer Differentialgleichungen bekannt ist. Es zeigt sich, dass die Lösung eines Delaysystems zum Zeitpunkt t durch die Integration aller möglicher Pfade von der Anfangsbedingung bis zur Zeit t gebildet werden kann. Die Pfade bestehen dabei aus verschiedenen Schritten unterschiedlicher Längen und Gewichte. Für skalare autonome DDEs können analytische Ausdrücke des Lösungsoperators in der Literatur gefunden werden, allerdings existieren keine für nicht-autonome oder höherdimensionale DDEs. Mithilfe der neuen Methode werden wir die Lösungsoperatoren der genannten DDEs aufstellen und zusätzlich auf Delaysysteme mit mehreren Delaytermen erweitern. Dabei bestätigen wir unsere Ergebnisse sowohl analytisch wie auch numerisch. Die gewonnenen Lösungsoperatoren verwenden wir anschließend zur Stabilitätsanalyse periodischer Delaysysteme. Es werden zwei neue Verfahren präsentiert, die mithilfe des Lösungsoperators den transformierten Monodromieoperator des Delaysystems nähern und daraus die Stabilität bestimmen können. Beide neue Verfahren sind spektrale Methoden für autonome sowie nicht-autonome Delaysysteme und haben keine Einschränkungen wie bei der bekannten Chebyshev-Kollokationsmethode oder der Chebyshev-Polynomentwicklung. Die beiden bisherigen Verfahren beschränken sich auf Delaysysteme mit rationalem Verhältnis zwischen Periode und Delay. Außerdem werden wir eine bereits bekannte Methode erweitern und zu einer spektralen Methode für periodische nicht-autonome Delaysysteme entwickeln. Wir bestätigen alle drei neue Verfahren numerisch. Damit werden in dieser Dissertation drei neue spektrale Verfahren zur Stabilitätsanalyse periodischer Delaysysteme vorgestellt. / In this thesis linear delay differential equations (DDEs) and its solutions operators are studied. We present a new method to calculate the solution operators for autonomous and non-autonomous DDEs. The new method is related to the path integral formalism, which is known from quantum mechanics and the analysis of stochastic differential equations. It will be shown that the solution of a time delay system at time t can be constructed by integrating over all paths from the initial condition to time t. The paths consist of several steps with different lengths and weights. Analytic expressions for the solution operator for scalar autonomous DDEs can be found in the literature but no results exist for non-autonomous or high dimensional DDEs. With the help of the new method we can calculate the solution operators for such DDEs and for time delay systems with several delay terms. We verify our results analytically and numerically. We use the obtained solution operators for the stability analysis of periodic time delay systems. Two new methods will be presented to approximate the transformed monodromy operator with the help of the solution operator and to get the stability. Both new methods are spectral methods for autonomous and non-autonomous delay systems and have no limitations like the known Chebyshev collocation method or Chebyshev polynomial expansion. Both previously known methods are limited to time delay systems with a rational relation between period and delay. Furthermore we will extend a known method to a spectral method for non-autonomous time delay systems. We verify all three new methods numerically. Hence, in this thesis three new spectral methods for the stability analysis of periodic time delay systems are presented.

An exploratory study using the predicate-argument structure to develop methodology for measuring semantic similarity of radiology sentences

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / The amount of information produced in the form of electronic free text in healthcare is increasing to levels incapable of being processed by humans for advancement of his/her professional practice. Information extraction (IE) is a sub-field of natural language processing with the goal of data reduction of unstructured free text. Pertinent to IE is an annotated corpus that frames how IE methods should create a logical expression necessary for processing meaning of text. Most annotation approaches seek to maximize meaning and knowledge by chunking sentences into phrases and mapping these phrases to a knowledge source to create a logical expression. However, these studies consistently have problems addressing semantics and none have addressed the issue of semantic similarity (or synonymy) to achieve data reduction. To achieve data reduction, a successful methodology for data reduction is dependent on a framework that can represent currently popular phrasal methods of IE but also fully represent the sentence. This study explores and reports on the benefits, problems, and requirements to using the predicate-argument statement (PAS) as the framework. A convenient sample from a prior study with ten synsets of 100 unique sentences from radiology reports deemed by domain experts to mean the same thing will be the text from which PAS structures are formed.

Frequency domain methods for the analysis of time delay systems

In this thesis a new frequency domain approach for the analysis of time delay systems is presented. After linearization of a nonlinear delay differential equation (DDE) with constant distributed delay around a constant or periodic reference solution the so-called Hill-Floquet method can be used for the analysis of the resulting linear DDE. In addition, systems with fast or slowly time-varying delays, systems with variable transport delays originating from a transport with variable velocity, and the corresponding spatially extended systems are presented, which can be also analyzed with the presented method. The newly introduced Hill-Floquet method is based on the Hill’s infinite determinant method and enables the transformation of a system with periodic coefficients to an autonomous system with constant coefficients. This makes the usage of a variety of existing methods for autonomous systems available for the analysis of periodic systems, which implies that the typical calculation of the monodromy matrix for the time evolution of the solution over the principle period is no longer required. In this thesis, the Chebyshev collocation method is used for the analysis of the autonomous systems. Specifically, in this case the periodic part of the solution is expanded in a Fourier series and the exponential behavior of the solution is approximated by the discrete values of the Fourier coefficients at the Chebyshev nodes, whereas in classical spectral or pseudo-spectral methods for the analysis of linear periodic DDEs the complete solution is expanded in terms of basis functions. In the last part of this thesis, new results for three applications with time delay effects are presented, which were analyzed with the presented methods. On the one hand, the occurrence of diffusion-driven instabilities in reaction-diffusion systems with delay is investigated. It is shown that wave instabilities are possible already for single-species reaction diffusion systems with distributed or time-varying delay. On the other hand, the stability of metal cutting vibrations at machine tools is analyzed. In particular, parallel orthogonal turning processes with multiple discrete delays and turning processes with a time-varying delay due to a spindle speed variation are studied. Finally, the stability of the synchronized solution in networks with heterogeneous coupling delays is studied. In particular, the eigenmode expansion for synchronized periodic orbits is derived, which includes an extension of the classical master stability function to networks with heterogeneous coupling delays. Dadurch können zur Analyse periodischer Systeme auch eine Vielzahl existierender Methoden für autonome Systeme genutzt werden und die Berechnung der Monodromie-Matrix für die Lösung des Systems über eine Periode entfällt. In dieser Arbeit wird zur Analyse des autonomen Systems die Tschebyscheff-Kollokationsmethode verwendet. Im Speziellen wird bei diesem Verfahren der periodische Teil der Lösung in einer Fourierreihe entwickelt und das exponentielle Verhalten durch die Werte der Fourierkoeffizienten an den Tschebyscheff Knoten approximiert, wohingegen bei klassischen spektralen Verfahren die komplette Lösung in bestimmten Basisfunktionen entwickelt wird. Im Anwendungsteil der Arbeit werden neue Ergebnisse für drei Beispielsysteme präsentiert, welche mit den vorgestellten Methoden analysiert wurden. Es wird gezeigt, dass Welleninstabilitäten schon bei Einkomponenten-Reaktionsdiffusionsgleichungen mit verteilter oder variabler Totzeit auftreten können. In einem zweiten Beispiel werden Schwingungen an Werkzeugmaschinen betrachtet, wobei speziell simultane Drehbearbeitungsprozesse und Prozesse mit Drehzahlvariationen genauer untersucht werden. Am Ende wird die Synchronisation in Netzwerken mit heterogenen Totzeiten in den Kopplungstermen untersucht, wobei die Zerlegung in Netzwerk-Eigenmoden für synchrone periodische Orbits hergeleitet wird und konkrete numerische Ergebnisse für ein Netzwerk aus Hodgkin-Huxley Neuronen gezeigt werden.:1. CoFramer : Ett diskussionsformat för djupa diskussioner på publika forum med låg Information Overload inspirerat av Philosophy for Children / CoFramer : A discussion format for deeper discussions on public forums with low information overload inspired by Philosophy for Children

Syftet med studien är att presentera ett designkoncept för publika diskussioner på nätet med målet att uppnå djupare diskussioner och minska mängden information overload. Arbetet använder metoden Concept Driven Interaction Design (CDID) som går ut på att skapa ett designkoncept utifrån flera olika teorier som appliceras genom interaktionsdesign. Ett designkoncept innehåller tre delar: ett namn, ett syfte och huvudprinciper. CDID innehåller sju steg som arbetet är utformat efter: 1.      Concept Generation – Summeras i en tabell som jämför diskussioner i forum (med flera antagande) och diskussioner med hjälp av metoden Philosophy for Children (P4C), samt annan teori. 2.      Concept Exploration – Åtta olika designaspekter identifieras utifrån jämförelsetabellen. 3.      Internal Concept Critique – Designaspekterna jämförs med två snarlika diskussionsformat. 4.      Design of Artifacts – Designkoncept version 1 skapas. 5.      External Design Critique – Intervjuer utförs för att undersöka intervjupersonerna generella erfarenheter av online diskussioner, testar antagandena från jämförelsetabellen och ge direkt feedback på första versionen av designkonceptet. 6.      Concept Revisited – Ändringar görs baserat på intervjumaterial och direkt feedback. 7.      Concept Contextualization – Designkonceptet kopplas tillbaka till litteraturen. The result of the study is a design concept named CoFramer. Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos in Systems with Time-Varying Delay

Systeme mit Zeitverzögerung sind dadurch charakterisiert, dass deren zukünftige Entwicklung durch den Zustand zum aktuellen Zeitpunkt nicht eindeutig festgelegt ist. Die Historie des Zustands muss in einem Zeitraum bekannt sein, dessen Länge Totzeit genannt wird und die Gedächtnislänge festlegt. In dieser Arbeit werden fundamentale Effekte untersucht, die sich ergeben, wenn die Totzeit zeitlich variiert wird. Im ersten Teil werden zwei Klassen periodischer Totzeitvariationen eingeführt. Da diese von den dynamischen Eigenschaften einer eindimensionalen iterierten Abbildung abgeleitet werden, die über die Totzeit definiert wird, werden die Klassen entsprechend der zugehörigen Dynamik konservativ oder dissipativ genannt. Systeme mit konservativer Totzeit können in Systeme mit konstanter Totzeit transformiert werden und besitzen gleiche charakteristische Eigenschaften. Dagegen weisen Systeme mit dissipativer Totzeit fundamentale Unterschiede z.B. in der Tangentialraumdynamik auf. Im zweiten Teil werden diese Ergebnisse auf Systeme angewendet, deren Totzeit im Vergleich zur internen Relaxationszeit des Systems groß ist. Es zeigt sich, dass ein durch dissipative Totzeitvariationen induzierter Mechanismus, genannt resonanter Dopplereffekt, unter anderem zu neuen Arten chaotischer Dynamik führt. Diese sind im Vergleich zur bekannten chaotischen Dynamik in Systemen mit konstanter Totzeit sehr niedrig-dimensional. Als Spezialfall wird das so genannte laminare Chaos betrachtet, dessen Zeitreihen durch nahezu konstante Phasen periodischer Dauer gekennzeichnet sind, deren Amplitude chaotisch variiert. Im dritten Teil dieser Arbeit wird auf der Basis experimenteller Daten und durch die Analyse einer nichtlinearen retardierten Langevin-Gleichung gezeigt, dass laminares Chaos robust gegenüber Störungen wie zum Beispiel Rauschen ist und experimentell realisiert werden kann. Es werden Methoden zur Zeitreihenanalyse entwickelt, um laminares Chaos in experimentellen Daten ohne Kenntnis des erzeugenden Systems zu detektieren. Mit diesen Methoden ist selbst dann eine Detektion möglich, wenn das Rauschen so stark ist, dass laminares Chaos mit bloßem Auge nur schwer erkennbar ist.:1. Introduction 2. Appendix / In systems with time-delay, the evolution of a system is not uniquely determined by the state at the current time. The history of the state must be known for a time period of finite duration, where the duration is called delay and determines the memory length of the system. In this work, fundamental effects arising from a temporal variation of the time-delay are investigated. In the first part, two classes of periodically time-varying delays are introduced. They are related to a specific dynamics of a one-dimensional iterated map that is defined by the time-varying delay. Referring to the related map dynamics the classes are called conservative or dissipative. Systems with conservative delay can be transformed into systems with constant delay, and thus have the same characteristic properties as constant delay systems. In contrast, there are fundamental differences, for instance, in the tangent space dynamics, between systems with dissipative delay and systems with constant delay. In the second part, these results are applied to systems with a delay that is considered large compared to the internal relaxation time of the system. It is shown that a mechanism induced by dissipative delays leads to new kinds of regular and chaotic dynamics. The dynamics caused by the so-called resonant Doppler effect is fundamentally different from the behavior known from systems with constant delay. For instance, the chaotic attractors in systems with dissipative delay are very low-dimensional compared to typical ones arising in systems with constant delay. An example of this new kind of low-dimensional dynamics is given by the so-called Laminar Chaos. It is characterized by nearly constant laminar phases of periodic duration, where the amplitude varies chaotically. In the third part of this work, it is shown that Laminar Chaos is a robust phenomenon, which survives perturbations such as noise and can be observed experimentally. Therefore experimental data is provided and a nonlinear delayed Langevin equation is analyzed. Using the robust features that characterize Laminar Chaos, methods for time series analysis are developed, which enable us to detect Laminar Chaos without the knowledge of the specific system that has generated the time series. By these methods Laminar Chaos can be detected even for comparably large noise strengths, where the characteristic properties are nearly invisible to the eye.:1. Introduction 2. Trots befintliga åtgärder har miljömålet en fortsatt negativ utveckling, för att bevara skogens biologiska och kulturella värden krävs förstärkta åtgärder och styrmedel. En kommunal nivå är viktig för implementeringen av miljömålet genom samhällsplanering. Syftet med studien är att skapa förståelse för hur Sunne och Karlstad kommun prioriterar och värderar skogen i deras samhällsplanering genom att genomföra en jämförande fallstudie och analysera utifrån en syntetisk top-down/bottom-up teoretisk implementeringsmodell och även granska likheter och skillnader mellan detaljplanerna. Uppsatsens frågeställningar följer: • Reflekteras de politiska argumenten angående miljömålet levande skogar genom implementeringsprocessen inom stadsplanering? • Finns ett tydligt arbete i planeringsprocessen i Sunne och Karlstad kommun som strävar efter att uppnå miljömålet levande skogar?  • Vilka prioriteringar inom samhällsplanering görs i förmån till skogen i Sunne och Karlstad kommun? Studiens resultat visar att implementeringsprocessen inom stadsplanering påverkas av de politiska argumenten angående miljömålet Levande skogar. Samarbetet mellan olika nivåer inom implementeringen som involverar organisationer och aktörer från ett beslutande av en policy till genomförandet på lokal nivå är viktigt för hur det sedan implementeras i samhällsplaneringen. Policyn för Levande skogar diskuteras inte specifikt i någon av detaljplanerna, men flera delar av planerna berör ändå detta policyområde. Det finns flera likheter och skillnader mellan detaljplanerna i Sunne och Karlstad kommun när det gäller arbetet med frågor kopplade till natur och skog. I Sunne kommun finns det en tydlig prioritering av att bevara skogen och dess naturvärden. I Karlstad kommun genomförs skogliga åtgärder för att utveckla trygghet, upplevelse, funktion och trivsel för människor, djur och växtlighet i tätortsnära skog enligt kommunen. / Through Agenda 2030, Sweden developed 16 environmental goals. One of these environmental goals that are currently not reached is the Living Forests goal. Despite existing measures, the goal has continued negative development. To preserve the forest's biological and cultural values, strengthened measures and instruments are required. The municipal level is essential for implementing the environmental objective through community planning. The case study's intent is to develop a deeper understanding of how the municipalities of Sunne and Karlstad prioritize and value the forest in their urban planning. Conducting a comparative case study and analysing based on a synthetic top-down/bottom-up theoretical implementation model and reviewing similarities and differences between the detailed plans. The case study's questions follow:  • Are the political arguments regarding the environmental goal of living forests reflected through the implementation process in urban planning? • Is the work evident in the planning process in Sunne and Karlstad municipalities that strive to achieve the environmental goal of living forests?  • What priorities in urban planning are made in favour of the forest in Sunne and Karlstad municipalities? The results show that the implementation process in urban planning is influenced by the political arguments regarding the environmental goal of Living Forests. The cooperation between different levels within the implementation that involves organizations and actors, from the decision of a policy to the implementation at the local level, is essential for how it implements in community planning. The Living Forests policy is not addressed in any of the detailed plans, but several parts of both plans still touch on this policy area. There are several similarities and differences between the detailed planning documents in both municipalities regarding the work with topics connected to nature and forests. Sunne municipality has a clear priority to preserve the forest and its natural values. In Karlstad municipality, forestry measures are carried out to develop safety, experience, function, and well-being for people, animals, and vegetation in forests close to urban areas, according to the municipality.

Die hier vorgelegte kumulative Dissertation befasst sich mit der Frage des emotionalen Sprachgebrauchs als Teil der öffentlichen politischen Kommunikation in abendländischen Demokratien. Durch die Anwendung etablierter Erkenntnisse und Ansätze aus den Bereichen der affektiven Neurowissenschaften und der Neurolinguistik zu emotionalem Sprachgebrauch, wird versucht neue Perspektiven und Analysetechniken für die Sozial- und Politikwissenschaften herauszuarbeiten, die sich mit der rhetorischen Gestaltung und Funktion öffentlicher politischer Kommunikation befassen. Im Rahmen dieser Bemühungen habe ich einen sequenziellen Mixed-Methods-Ansatz entwickelt, eine neopragmatische Diskursanalyse (NPDA), die auf der bestehenden Methodologie der Pragmatischen Soziologie der Kritik (PSC) basiert. Diese Methode ermöglicht es, die Argumentationsstrategien und -muster von Akteuren abzuleiten und ihre Verwendung von hochgradig erregender emotionaler Sprache (via HAEWWörterbuch) nachzuzeichnen. In zwei separaten Fallstudien habe ich diesen neu entwickelten Ansatz angewendet, um (1) die US-Präsidentschaftswahlkämpfe 2016 von Trump und Clinton zu analysieren sowie (2) öffentliche Reden britischer Parteiführer:innen der Conservative und der Labour Party von 1900 bis 2019. Ich habe festgestellt, dass emotionale Sprache in der gesamten untersuchten (politischen) Kommunikation vorkommt und dass sie hauptsächlich eine Highlighter-Funktion in den Argumentationen der Akteure einnimmt. Politische Kommunikation, als eine spezifische Ausformung menschlicher Kommunikation, scheint immer ‚emotional‘ zu sein. / This cumulative dissertation addresses the issues of emotive language use as part of public political communication in occidental democracies. By applying established findings and approaches from the fields of affective neuroscience and neurolinguistics on emotive language use, the here presented dissertation intends to offer new perspectives and analytical techniques for the social and political sciences, concerned with understanding the rhetorical design and function of public political communication. As part of these efforts, I developed a sequential mixed methods approach, a neopragmatist discourse analysis (NPDA), which is based on the existing methodology associated with the Pragmatic Sociology of Critique (PSC). This method allows for the deduction of actors’ argumentative strategies and patterns and to detect their use of highly arousing emotive language (via HAEW dictionary). In two separate case studies I applied this newly developed approach, analysing (1) the 2016 U.S. presidential election campaigns of Trump and Clinton as well as (2) public speeches of British party leaders from the Conservative and Labour Party from 1900 – 2019. I found that emotive language appeared throughout all analysed (political) communication and that it mainly served a highlighting function within actors’ argumentations. Political communication, as a specific form of human communication, seems to always be ‘emotional’.
