Obraz Jana Husa v české raněnovověké literatuře / The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature

Hejdová, Tereza January 2014 (has links)
The work The Image of Jan Hus in the Early Modern Czech Literature tries to map different ways of description of this Czech preacher in selected literary texts from 15th to 18th century, to capture the changes which his image underwent. The chosen authors come from different countries and use different languages, represent different environments, social classes and opinion groups, they also have different education and religion. Individual literary works were assessedby means of comparing the key episodes that are either repeated in the texts, or the author intentionally did not use them. To understand the image of Jan Hus as a whole, also contemporary iconography was taken into account , which in some cases has been taken from other literary texts than those which were compared, so that the image of Hus whereas complete as possible. The comparison of the texts and iconography showed, how accurate the observation of the described scheme was and how the image of Jan Hus was gradually changing. The combination of written and iconographic material from specific time intervals allowed us to observe the gradual change of conceptions of the personality of Jan Hus and events connected with him, because the authors represent the opinion of their ethnic group and time. The image of Jan Hus is therefore very...

Skladování obilí ve starověkém Egyptě (2600-1650 př.n.l.).Typologie a socioekonomické implikace / Grain Storage in Ancient Egypt (2600-1650 BC). Typology and socio-economic implications

Bardoňová, Martina January 2019 (has links)
In recent years, research on the field of ancient Egyptian economy in its earliest historical forms has grown quickly. Despite previous efforts in the last decades, the nature of the ancient Egyptian economic system has not yet been satisfactorily defined. Ancient Egypt had, like the majority of preindustrial societies, a pre-eminently agrarian economy. Amongst the agricultural products acquired from the Egyptian land, cereals stood out due to their economic significance. Grain and cereal-based products, such as bread and beer, were used as a medium of exchange and a basis for wages. The aforementioned importance of cereals must have made their management and storage a matter of priority. The storage of food staples is always of utmost importance as it is a key component of food distribution, which is an important means of executing power and accomplishing the goals by specific actors in a system (Paulette 2013: 106). Despite the significance of grain storage for the understanding of socio-economic and power relations in a given society, no comprehensive macro-study on grain storage in ancient Egypt has been undertaken. Thus, the main goal of this work is to obtain a new multi-faceted picture of grain storage in ancient Egypt. More precisely, the study focuses on an extensive historical span...

Commedia del Conflitto

Neuber, Michael 17 April 2018 (has links)
By asking how the human body becomes a crucial resource of visual communication in protest, this research advances scholarship in two main ways. First, I theorize the role of the body in terms of its appearances and actions, and in relation to collective action. Despite some scholarship attending to performative politics, this inquiry addresses several gaps in the theorizing about social movements such as the visual and embodied aspects of protest. Second, to anchor my theorization of the socially and physically situated body, I develop a methodology for researching corporality in association with protest interaction dynamics. I identify and conceptualize the body as a medium of visualization, which I call the pictorial body. Linking the pictorial body concept to the interface between scripts, narratives, and genres (SNG complex) lends the analyses to accounts of visual and dramaturgical theory. Empirically, I use original video data of the 2008 Anti-Castor protest campaign in Germany's Wendland. Findings show that the pictorial body is a primary carrier of symbolism in protest micro-dramas - short dramatic interaction episodes between challengers, targets, and third parties. As the most proximate medium, corporeal mobilizing experience - the call for action - can be treated as an outcome of protest action rather than only as a precondition. I argue that the embodied nature of micro-dramas during protest directly connects actors to movement narratives and master frames by making physically manifest in both space and time what is otherwise a rhetorical conflict. The embodiment of normatively framed constellations of antagonist characters is essential to this. More specifically, a conflictual relationship was crafted primarily by the composition of pictorial bodies in images of border violations, in which the attack and defense of the body connects to the emotionalizing constructs of dignity and decency.

Guitar Practices and Representations in Madrid and Andalusia from 1883 to 1922

Trancart, Vinciane 25 October 2014 (has links)
During the transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth centuries, when the question of national identity is continuing to develop in Spain, the guitar is repeatedly mentioned as the “national instrument”. This platitude ultimately proves to be a paradoxical symbol of an identity that is still under debate during this period. While stereotypical descriptions caricature the reality by oversimplifying it, on the contrary, guitar practices diversify during the Restoration, because of technical changes in the instrument and the evolution of folk, classical and flamenco music. The composition in 1920 by Manuel de Falla of the first piece for solo guitar (Homenaje a Debussy) and the organization of the First Contest of the Cante Jondo in Granada in 1922 testify to the gradual recognition of the instrument. Yet the proliferation of printed matter, favored by the freedom of the press law (1883), gives rise to numerous literary and visual representations of the guitar that do not accurately reflect these changes. They mostly bring out its popular, Andalusian and even flamenco character, and its ability to impregnate the imagination. Published in periodicals in Madrid or Andalusia, these works influence the reception of the instrument: it is both appreciated by an increasingly wide audience, disregarded for being absent from museums and institutions, and rejected by social and moral standards because of its presence in decried places. Yet, even when this stereotype is disputed, the guitar takes on an original symbolic dimension, rooted in everyday life, which manifests itself through the emotions it provokes.

Merseburger, Maria 10 January 2018 (has links)
The thesis presents an art historical methodology that assesses clothing and its pictorial representations in order to interpret how material culture relates to social construction. Using as an example an impressive patronage project of the Tornabuoni family – a newly rich family of merchants in the circle of the Medici – reveals the possibilities as well as the limitations of symbolic communication through dress in early modern Florence. In addition to outward style, these subtle symbols helped to establish and renegotiate their bearer’s position in the shifting hierarchy of an uncertain political climate. By closely examining Tornabuoni commissions, the thesis demonstrates how clothing is a critical means of understanding social motivations and aspirations.

The Monções interfere in that project, because they appear as one of the ideological supports for it implementation, mainly, for being a fluvial road that it was derived of a road used by the pioneers in the century XVIII, until becoming a commercial route that linked Porto Feliz to the gold mines of Cuiabá in a long and difficult trip. The largest implementation of that whole construction iconographic was it then director of the Museum From São Paulo Afonso de Taunay, that was used of a great visual apparatus as pedagogic instrument before the population, his writing and his contusing rhetoric served as support in that process, it was during his administration that several pictures were ordered and formed a room dedicated to the Monções. The image, of this sorts things out, it comes as source of inclusion multidiscipline that dialogues, above all, with a produced textual narrative. This way, it intends to interpret and to analyze the use of the images of the Monções, for an elite from São Paulo, with the support of the public patronage for the construction of a speech nationalism and ideologic. The research emphasizes the importance of a historical moment and it relationship with the history from São Paulo and the national, identifying the point of prominence of that expansionist movement and its connection with an elitist process, that it aimed at to put São Paulo instead of prominence before the remaining of the country / A dissertação tem como proposta principal, analisar como a iconografia monçoeira foi apropriada por uma elite política e letrada paulista, um projeto idealizador encetado com o objetivo de efetivar São Paulo como o maior responsável pela formação da nação brasileira, criando para isso o ideário bandeirante no final do século XIX e início do XX.

Les bannières religieuses : une approche du catholicisme bas-breton : 1805-2012 / Religious bannels : an approach of lower Britanny catholicism : 1805-2012

Guillou, Christiane 18 December 2013 (has links)
This thesis is about catholicism in Lower Brittany through the study of processional banners from the beginning of the 19th century to our days. These were found in tthe churches of the diocese of Quimper and Leon , in the french county of Finistere. The thesis is divided into four parts : the production of banners, their counting from the various types of available inventories, devotion which they highlight, even social evolution of which testify. The approach is quantitative and qualitative. It involves a systematic visit of churches and the conservation of a photographic record of all their banners. Classic sources are used such as the reportsof the canonical visits, and others vho are less so the inventories of 1906.The study of the life of two parishes, a deanship dating from the concordat and a former episcopal city, allowed to highlight the generative motives of the acquisition of banners. If parochial banners are the norm, the banners of congregations reflect the dynamism of the groups of devotion and their evolution in the course of the centuries.Quantitative approaches allow to propose a hypothesis of reponse to the policy of the Laic laws by interposed banners, in parallel to social evolutions. If the iconography shows a distant influence of the arts, it is especially the importance of trade that appears. However it leaves possibilities of expression for a different creativity and even for a different spirituality. The last chapters concerrn the revival starting from the seond third of the 20th century. The last chapter is dedicated to the banners made for the Mission 2012.

L’art et la bataille : représenter les campagnes d’Italie : (1800 ; 1859) / The art and the battle : a study on the way of representing the French Italian campaigns : (1800 ; 1859)

Nicolas, Aude 14 December 2015 (has links)
This work deals with a comparative analysis of military paintings representing the French Italian Campaigns (1800 and 1859), including drawings, photographs and sculptures when it is relevant. The parallel is established between artistic heritages and innovations from “a Napoleon to the other”, asking the artists’ willing of precision and military knowledge when they represented these events, so these works of art are studied in a different way focused on a military approach using iconography. Although the main work is in history of art, based on the analysis of formal handling and critical reception, the methodology resorts other sciences in order to examine the artworks composition and organisation in details: in that way, artworks are confronted to topography, strategy, tactic and also military heritage testimonies (uniforms, emblems, weapons…) and history they aimed to show. The work is divided in three parts, successively studying topographical representation (did the artists travelled to see the places and did they represented precise and recognizable geographical details?), the way of painting battles (how fights were figured at the beginning and in the middle of the 19th century, can regiments and tactical manoeuvres be identified correctly?) and heroic perception (how heroes were showed in 1800 and in 1859 and how artworks can be ranked, between glorification and realistic representations?).

Antichan, Sylvain 24 October 2014 (has links)
In 1837, the Palace of Versailles was « converted » into a vast museum aiming to « gather allthe national historical memories that it belongs to the arts to perpetuate ». For about a century, the Second Empire, followed by the Third Republic, maintained, reshuffled and expanded themuseum, to include representations of contemporaneous events. This thesis aims tounderstand, based on a dense network of archival materials, the museum’s contribution to theelaboration and diffusion of a national and civic imagination. The iconographic analysis of nearly 1,300 paintings within the context of their palatialframework allows us to explore the pictorial and material representations of the political, theirsimilarities and differences. The issue, therefore, is to apprehend the manner in which thesehistoricized visions of the nation-Statecould hold and become internalized. Their success isnot only the result of political and administrative action, but also finds its source in the mutualreinforcement of different social spheres and loyalties. This national history takes shape byreproducing the actors’ most familiar environments, by borrowing from the domestic memoryof the “great notables” and from the norms and issues of professional groups (painters, historians, the military), or by solemnizing the popular habits. The history of France becomesobjective through this interpenetration of identities, through this mutual reinforcement ofsocial sectors, in these processes of politicization of the social and socialization of thepolitical. To understand the formation, content and diffusion of this national imaginationamounts to scrutinizing the systems of relationships between social groups, the evolvinginterrelations between everyday life and the national, between art and history, and betweenthe social and the political.
