Measuring quality management system performance using quantitative analysesSmith, Richard Angus January 2013 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree
Master of Technology: Quality
in the Faculty of Engineering
at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2013 / Many top performing businesses, which achieve superior levels of success
and sustainability, have a sound, implemented, and well maintained,
Quality Management System (QMS). The correlation between business
success and an implemented management system has been shown in
numerous papers. This research, which culminates in a quantitative
measure of QMS performance, was conducted at Eskom’s Koeberg
Nuclear Power Station (KNPS). The power station is the operating leg of
the Koeberg Operating Unit (KOU). The researcher is a QMS lead auditor
in the KNPS Quality Assurance Department.
A program of audits is planned based on the KOU quality and safety
manual and the national regulatory licencing requirements. The audit
monitoring program is then implemented over a three year period and
considers all the management system processes which impact on nuclear
safety and business performance. The individual audits each consider ISO
9001 criteria in context of the business area audited. Each major business
area (e.g. design, maintenance, etc.) within the power station adheres to
all generic ISO 9001 QMS clauses and considerations, such as
documentation management, records management, etc. Each process or
business area audit is thus effectively a QMS audit. The audit results,
when combined are therefore a representative measure of the overall
organisational QMS performance.
The potential value to be gained from the audit results and data accrued
over the monitoring period has not been optimised to maximise the return
on investment to Eskom. The research problem statement thus proposes
that the performance measurement capability of the quality management
system at Eskom's Koeberg Power Station is insufficient. This diminishes
management's ability to identify business risk resulting from management
system deficiencies, which impacts negatively on business performance.
The research question seeks to determine how the performance
measurement capability of the QMS can be improved to assist
management in identifying business risk resulting from quality
management system deficiencies in order to improve business
performance.
The research objectives are supported by the literature study, which
identifies the quality management methods currently used in order to
measure and subsequently improve business performance. It also shows
how QMS performance measurement, when deconstructed and analysed
can provide the required insight for supporting management decision
making. The research approach is considered inductive in that a theory is
developed based on the collection and the analysis of that data. Applied
research, will thus serve as the basis of the research methodology as it is
considered the most appropriate research approach, based on the need to
answer practical questions around the measurement of QMS performance
philosophy.
The research shows that by introducing additional theming and severity
data into the secondary audit findings data, it is possible over time to
extract high level strategic direction information when analysing the
additional metadata. The dimensions and value of the QMS Performance
measuring instrument are:
Ø A cause and effect theming philosophy of audit findings providing an
additional context to business improvement advice to management.
Ø The provision of a QMS process deficiency locator / identifier which
targets management action areas for improvement.
Ø The provision of a quantitative measure of the management system
performance, providing a reference from which to improve.
By providing a quantifiable measure of an organisations QMS
performance, a reference point is provided to gauge QMS performance
and also render a definitive measure to enable performance improvement
of the business.

Genom dessa fynd kan studien tillskriva etablerad teoribildning och tidigare forskning relevans även inom domänen grundskola / Regarding compulsory school staff’s participation in their school’s improvement activity, the area of research is thin, especially regarding research approaches which allows unconditional multidisciplinary findings. To fill this gap this study has been using Grounded Theory, with interviews, focus group interviews and observations, to achieve the purpose of this study, which was to, with an unconditionally approach, provide a new theory from an employee perspective, of employee’s participation in improvement activity, within compulsory school. More specific, this meant investigating the factors that influence compulsory schools staff participation in their work of improvement. It also included examining possible correlations between these factors, as well as how these possible correlations affect compulsory school staff's participation in their improvement activities. The findings showed that prerequisites need to be met to improve the probability of employees participating in work of improvement. The kind of leadership practiced also have great impact. However, employees can develop both negative and positive attitudes towards change if the prerequisites are not met, in part depending of their personality traits, which also determine their needs as well as how they need to be matched up with co-workers. Leaders therefore need to take personality traits into consideration regarding both needs of the employees and team composition. Furthermore, the phenomenon of teamwork has, as the result shows, a greatly positive impact on compulsory school staff’s participation in improvement activities. With these findings this study recognizes established theories and previous research, as valid even within the domain of compulsory school. / <p>2020-06-26</p>

Total quality management and organisational performance in the Maluti-A-Phofung municipality in the Free State ProvinceMasejane, Thamae Paulus 02 1900 (has links)
The overall aim of this study is to determine whether and how the application of Total Quality Management (TQM) can improve organisational performance in the Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality. There is a reason to believe that TQM can be and is a viable approach for improving productivity and performance in the public sector. TQM principles centred on customer satisfaction, process orientation and continuous improvement are very compatible with preferred public sector management styles. Therefore, a theoretical and conceptual analysis is undertaken of TQM as it is discussed in various volumes of published literature. As a result, quality is examined in terms of how it historically evolved during the various stages of development of mankind and overview of essential concepts that contributed to modern professional practice of the concept.
Furthermore, TQM defined within a broad framework of management theory and its dimensions are scrutinised. These dimensions are analysed in such a way that describe a model of how organisations could use TQM as a management theory. A thorough analysis of individual dimension and unique contribution of each to organisational performance is made. The role of managers to implement TQM principles and practices is analysed as well as factors contributing to failures as a check list of what managers must avoid in order to implement TQM effectively. Moreover, the criterion upon which TQM in public institutions could be evaluated is also discussed as the corner stone of a performance measurement system.
Local government introduced municipal performance management systems as part of the new public management paradigm shift, adopted in an attempt to find more effective and efficient methods of delivering services. Therefore, the concept of performance management and its impact on TQM on municipal performance is thoroughly discussed. The meaning of quality and performance is defined and evaluated in terms of components of performance management. In this way the fundamental value and impact TQM may have on performance management can be determined. To determine whether and how the application of TQM can improve organisational performance in the Maluti-A-Phofung Municipality, a structured questionnaire survey is undertaken based on nine TQM dimensions identified in the study. / Public Administration and Management / M.A. (Public Administration)

At a time when a new recession is increasing the pressure on companies to increase profits and reduce costs, the contribution of engaged employees has proven to be crucial. Despite this, the percentage of engaged employees only makes up a fifth of the employees at the organizations in Sweden. Most employees feel uncertain about their role or whether management even wants their help. If engaged employees hold the key to the organization's survival, why is it not used to a greater extent? The purpose of this study has been to investigate how participating and engaged employees contribute to improvement work based on the following questions "How do engaged employees contribute to the improvement work?" and "How can organizations increase employee participation in improvement work?". The theoretical frame of reference is based on two of the values used in offensive quality development: Create the opportunity for everyone to participate and work continuously with improvements. The study was carried out based on an essentially qualitative research strategy, by sending out a questionnaire. The outcome of the survey confirmed ten identified factors from the literature study that affect employee engagement. The study showed the importance of affirmation and appreciation, such as rewards linked to engagement and highlighted another aspect: engagement spreads engagement. The research questions were answered through the following conclusions: - Engaged employees contribute to the improvement work through participation, employeeship, a more frequent need-oriented flow of ideas, self-leadership and by spreading engagement in a learning, idea-driven organizational culture. - Organizations can increase employee participation in improvement work by increasing employee engagement, ensuring progress and providing satisfactory work environment and working methods.

Kultur av ständiga förbättringar : inom en offentlig verksamhet / Culture of continuous improvement : in public sectorFredriksson, Susanna January 2023 (has links)
The lack of a culture of continuous improvement means that organizations risk losing efficiency, cutting back on financial savings and becoming a less attractive employer. Creating a culture of continuous improvement is thus important. Trafik och samhälle in the Uppsala region wants to build an established culture of continuous improvement. The aim is to identify which key factors are needed to build a culture of continuous improvement, and these are then compared with what emerges regarding how Trafik och samhälle works with continuous improvement. Differences were identified to provide guidance on how management can develop a culture of continuous improvement. The design of the study is qualitative with interviews and a smaller literature study. The literature study show nine key factors: organizational quality management, committed management and credible leadership, employee commitment and encouragement, good communication, customer focus, clear structure and a process-based way of working, culture of trust and cohesion, training in continuous improvement and continuous improvement and Long term thinking. Trafik och samhälle have strengths in terms of employee engagement and leadership engagement. They have a clear end-customer focus and a culture characterized by trust and cohesion. Trafik och samhälle need to focus on creating an organizational quality management, clear structure and a process-based working method as well as training in continuous improvement. The organization is recommended to work with processes and develop close cooperation with other regional public transport authorities. This study has reinforced the importance of working with structure, processes and tools in parallel with culture.

Managing parental involvement with education in ZimbabweNgwenya, Victor Chaboneka 11 1900 (has links)
Parental involvement (PI) in school governance is an international acclaimed worldwide practice and is viewed as a major topic in current educational reforms. This study investigated the management of PI programmes in public schools within the jurisdiction of Bulawayo Metropolitan Province in Zimbabwe. The Total Quality Management (TQM) framework was employed as attempts were made to bring all stakeholders on board in the pursuit of quality education. To achieve this thrust, literature on the historical developments which obtained in the United States of America, China and South Africa on the phenomenon was reviewed. Further to that, the models of PI which influenced the adoption of what has obtained in Zimbabwean public schools were cited too. In the process the legal statutes which mandated PI programmes in operation were explored in detail. Data for this study was obtained by means of a quantitative approach involving questionnaires with precoded responses from a sample of 51 education managers and 47 school governors. The major findings of the empirical investigation was that PI is juridical and the bulk of the parents want to be engaged in both formal and informal academic issues of the school business as long as such engagement is well planned and organised. This collaboration of the minds and efforts does not only enhance the management style of the education manager but also the realisation of academic excellence in schools as both parties collectively embark on a quality conscious crusade. Generally, parents in this province were found to be less meddlesome when it comes to the professional governance of the school system, thus making the bulk of schools in this region “conflict free zones”. Disturbing though was the failure by parents to be engaged in the conception of the school vision and mission statement. Finally, the engagement of parents in the management of PI programmes has been recommended in this thesis as it has been found to be genuine, transparent, human resource oriented, dialogical and accountable if citizen participation in school governance is to be envisaged within a democratic framework. Orientation workshops and seminars can be manned for this purpose if home-brewed PI models meant to enhance ownership, commitment and motivation are to be realised. In that way, a customised educational menu may be approximated. / Teacher Education / D. Ed. (Education Management)

Developing a conceptual framework to analyse supply chain design practicesNel, Jacobus Daniel 11 1900 (has links)
Analysis of the supply chain is necessary to improve performance. For this reason,
supply chain management (SCM) has received a lot of attention recently and supply
chain design (SCD) is a concept that forms an integral part of the adoption and
implementation of SCM. Effective SCD contributes towards better supply chain
integration (SCI) which, in turn, contributes towards improved supply chain
performance. The focus of this study is on the analysis of SCD practices. Designing
the supply chain structure is a complex and demanding undertaking that needs to be
aligned with the needs of the supply chain’s end customers, because their needs
ultimately have to be satisfied. This study proposes a conceptual framework that has
been developed from literature to assist organisations in the analysis of their SCD
practices, with the aim of improving supply chain performance. The conceptual
framework was exploratively tested by means of empirical research to determine
whether it can be used as an assessment tool to assess the SCD practices of
organisations. The study concluded that the conceptual framework that was
developed in this study can be used as an assessment tool with which organisations
can analyse their SCD practices. / Business Management / D. Com. (Business Management)

The influence of total quality management on school improvement in secondary schools in the uThungulu District, Kwazulu-NatalSibeko, Sylvia Dolly 09 1900 (has links)
TQM has been identified as an approach that can be adopted to improve quality in business as well as in education. The main aim of this approach is to involve everybody in decision-making of the organization, in this case a school, with the purpose of achieving highest commitment from staff and customer satisfaction. TQM can be a way which can bring about changes in the education system. It is a philosophy with continuous improvement which can provide a set of practicable tools and techniques to meet the present and the future desires of any educational system. Therefore, this study sought to investigate the influence of TQM on school improvement in secondary schools in the Uthungulu District, Kwazulu-Natal.
The questionnaires were handed to schools in the Uthungulu District which is made up of 5 circuits, namely, Umhlathuze Circuit, Umfolozi Circuit, Umlalazi Circuit, Mthonjaneni Circuit and Inkandla Circuit. The research concentrated mainly on School Management Teams (SMTs) and Post Level 1 educators (PL1 educators) from senior secondary schools (high schools). On the whole, respondents in the study area have shown a positive attitude towards understanding the significance of Total Quality Management principles in schools. The findings seem to suggest that everyone has a responsibility of encouraging implementation of TQM in schools. It is important to develop quality management systems, because without them, it is impossible to implement. The quality improvement teams should be empowered to manage themselves and provide programmes that will enable them to be more effective. The proposed model of the study provides information about basic elements and factors which need to be taken into cognisance during the TQM and implementation process. The model identifies the main principles of TQM with continuous improvement at the centre of them all. The main aim of implementing TQM in school should be continuous improvement. / Educational Management and Leadership / D. Ed. (Education Management)

Quality management of education in Ethiopian public universitiesBiruk Solomon Haile 12 1900 (has links)
Quality management of higher education is a vital concern today. The purpose of this study was to examine education quality management practices of Ethiopian public universities and to investigate a relationship between three dependent variables (planning for quality education, implementation of plans and performance improvement) and five independent variables (identification of quality education, considering customers’ needs, performance tracking, education quality management strategies and taking actions). Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected by means of questionnaires and interviews. Respondents of the questionnaire items were 170 education managers and student union representatives. In addition, ten senior instructors and ten senior students were interviewed. The responses obtained using questionnaires were analysed using frequencies, percentages, means, modes, chi-square tests and Spearman’s correlation. Responses obtained using open ended items on the questionnaires and interview responses were analysed qualitatively using themes of issues most frequently obtained. This study showed that: in most Ethiopian public universities the educational quality planning process is not participatory. There is a gap in using their plans in guiding their day to day activities. Most universities do not regularly collect data on satisfaction levels of their customers. Educational process changes are not tested on small scale before a wide spread application. It also showed that there is a strong positive relationship between performance improvement and the four independent variables namely: considering customers’ needs, performance tracking, teaching methodologies and taking actions in Ethiopian public universities. Consequently, recommendations have been given so as to improve education quality management practices of Ethiopian public universities. This study hopefully contributes a lot for performance improvement of similar higher education system. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. Ed. (Education Management)

Tourist service quality management in the ecotourism accomodation sector of KwaZulu-NatalNaidoo, Krishna Murthi 12 October 2012 (has links)
Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the Degree: Doctor of Technology: Quality,
Durban University of Technology, 2012. / There is extensive focus on the practical performance of ecotourism in respect of environmentally invasive activities and the satisfaction of ecotourists in South Africa. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of quality management practices on service quality in the accommodation sector serving ecotourism destinations in KwaZulu-Natal.
The study was conducted at 58 hotels within a 50 kilometre proximity to ecotourism development regions of KwaZulu-Natal province. Two separate self-administered questionnaires were designed for the hotel managers and for their guests. A quantitative approach and a census of 58 managers were conducted and the guest response of 587 was obtained using convenience sampling.
The results revealed that there are mismatches in guests’ actual experience on the variables of interest for customer service quality and the importance they attach to each variable. The experience-importance findings show that most guests rated their experiences above the importance they attach to those experiences.
Little attention has been paid to hotel service quality research pertaining specifically to quality-related performance. This study fills this gap by identifying congruent hotel service quality attributes and relating these to management performance by analysing the importance of these attributes for hotel-guests seeking experiences of the natural environment. The results of the study offer measures for ecotourism service quality enhancement for the ecotourists experience at the hotels and a starting point for hotel managers to optimise the service quality growth and development while protecting the resources on which they are based.
Quality function deployment has emerged as a significant tool to guide hotel managers in ecotourism destinations to attain planned levels of guest service quality and formulate a well-informed and systematic framework that will advance strategies for service quality enhancement.
