L'organisation de l'Église au IVe siècle et ses fondements canoniques / The organization of the Church in the IVth century and its canonical foundations

Cobzaru, Daniel 26 September 2013 (has links)
This work provides a canonical and historical approach to the organization of the Church in the 4th century, having as main purpose the reconstruction of the face of the Church according to some key aspects, as well as the understanding of how the canons of this period have shaped its face. This return to a stable organization of the Church reveals inventiveness, which the Church has shown, in many circumstances, to meet the challenges of this era. The councils of the 4th century, as well as the canon law concerning the election and the ordination of the bishop, are considered in the direction of significant detail. The study pays particular attention to the Apostolic Canon 34, which is today the most commented and cited canon in the Orthodox community, not only to legitimize the organization of autonomous and autocephalous Orthodox Churches, but also to justify the jurisdictional rights of autocephalous churches in their diaspora.

In this work, it was analyzed a one-dimensional lattice formed by mass-spring systems with an additional Rosen-Morse potential on site. This kind of lattice is used to study thermodynamic properties of DNA, in particular the thermal denaturation. In the context of this work, the Rosen-Morse potential simulates the hydrogen bounds between the double helix of the DNA. The graphic of the average base pairs stretching in function of temperature gives information about the thermal denaturation of the macromolecule. This result shows that it is possible to obtain phase transition using an asymmetric potential on site without an infinite barrier. The graphic also showed a sharp denaturation in comparison with the transition curve obtained when the Morse potential on site is used in the original Peyrard- Bishop model. This behavior improves the model

Estado, igreja e imprensa: o episcopado de Dom José Brandão de Castro e a ditadura civil-militar em Sergipe (1964-1985) / State, church and press : the episcopate of Dom José Brandão de Castro and the civil-military dictatorship in Sergipe (1964-1985)

Silva, Rosana Oliveira 22 March 2018 (has links)
With a sometimes ambiguous stance, the Catholic Church has, over the centuries, demonstrated an immeasurable capacity for renewal and adaptation to the current historical context, something that can be observed, for example, in its attitudes towards military dictatorships. Whether it is in support or questioning this type of regime, the Brazilian clergy as well as Sergipe experienced moments of tension in the second half of the twentieth century. During his episcopate (1960-1987), Bishop José Brandão de Castro, the first bishop of the Diocese of Propria - se, was involved in a series of accusations of communist practices due to his change of attitude of condescension towards the defender regime of social causes and human rights. In this context, we aim to analyze the performance of Dom Brandão during the Brazilian civil-military dictatorship, emphasizing the period in which he was accused of communism, trying to understand the circumstances surrounding the episode, its repercussion in the religious, social and political scenario, but also attentive to the discourses built around the fact, especially in the press. To that end, the sources used in the production of this paper include newspapers such as A Defesa, Jornal de Sergipe, Gazeta de Sergipe, among others, and official sources (encyclicals, documents of the State Commission of Truth-SE), highlighting the fields of research in Church History and Press History. We thus understand that Dom Brandão's performance at the head of the diocese of Propriá displeased some sectors of society, a determining factor for having been raised the condition of constant vigilance by state security organs, as well as the Catholic Church itself which was part.

The objective of this dissertation is to analyze ultramontanism from religious practices from the referred bishop, understanding ecclesiastic reform as the creator of a specific routine and not only as a movement transplanted from Europe to Brazil. Thus, we studied some actions by D. Antônio Ferreira Viçoso (1787-1875) during his bishopric in dioceses in Mariana, Minas Gerais, from 1844 to 1875. The measures adopted by him as restructuration of the seminar, perpetual missions and pastorals visits, added to actions by priests and nuns, and were very important for the understanding of ultramontanism as religious culture. Opposite to the clergy, who despite controlling attempts, continued to live as they wished, Church had to change some of its rules and to make itself more flexible. Therefore, the relationship among imposed rules and creative actions favored a less strict ecclesiastic reform. The ultramontane movement, started by D. Viçoso, in Minas Gerais, through reformatory actions, had to face the great dimension of the dioceses, together with a numerical insufficiency of priests. The result was a religious reform that tolerated a faster education of the clergy and the continuation in priesthood of those with a record of scandals / Mestrado / Historia Cultural / Mestre em História

Abstract: This thesis reflects upon the subjective conditions regarding Lota Macedo Soares and Elizabeth Bishop?s love relationship, understanding that they were able to create affective and sexual ties outside institutionalized spaces such as family and maternity. Within this experience, they assumed new ways to relate with themselves as well as with the social environment in which they were inserted. Considered perversion, sickness, associated to criminality, so was the female homoerotism referred to by the legal-medical discourses. In this work, I rescue a discussion on these practices, underlining the importance of deconstruction, understanding that this conservative thinking discriminated women involved in this kind of relationship. Furthermore, I approach the studies that rescued the diversity of the female experience, noticing the social binary division under which sex became unquestionable evidence that erased the multiple forms of human manifestations. / Doutorado / Historia Cultural / Doutor em História

John of Salisbury and law

Esser, Maxine Kristy January 2017 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to consider the knowledge and use of law by John of Salisbury, evaluating what he thought law should be, whence it originated and how it related to aspects of society, for example the institutions of the monarch and the church. For this purpose, the main evidence used will be Historia Pontificalis, Policraticus and the large corpus of letters. Chapter One is entitled Types of Law and gives an outline of the main types of law as John saw them. Chapter Two is entitled Canon Law. This chapter is devoted entirely to the study of John's knowledge and use of canon law. In this chapter, consideration will be made to what canon law John appears to have known and how John used this knowledge within his written work. Chapter Three, entitled King and Law, focuses upon John of Salisbury's opinion of the relationship between the monarch and the law. Chapter Four, Theory of Law: Church and King considers John's ideas on the relationship between church and monarch. Attention will also be paid to how he conveyed his ideas during the papal schism and the Becket dispute as well as John's ideas on judges. Chapter Five is entitled Law in Practice: Church and King, whereby analysis will be made of how John sees the monarch's involvement in issues such as church elections.

Confronting the Normativity Objection: W.V. Quine’s Engineering Model and Michael A. Bishop and J.D. Trout’s Strategic Reliabilism

Moghaddam, Soroush 04 September 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to critically examine how W.V. Quine, Michael A. Bishop and J.D. Trout confront the normativity objection against naturalized epistemology. In Chapter One, normativity in epistemology is introduced, followed by a brief look over Quine’s grievances against the traditional approach to epistemology. Quine rejects traditional epistemology and assimilates epistemology with science. The second chapter assesses how Quine naturalizes epistemology, and the third chapter evaluates his engineering response against the normativity objection. Bishop and Trout’s theory, founded upon the Aristotelian Principle, concentrates on reasoning and epistemic excellence instead of belief justification. Strategic Reliabilism’s attempt to dissolve the naturalistic challenge and resolve the normativity objection is inspected in Chapter Four. The final chapter, succinctly, summarizes its preceding chapters and ends by suggesting a closer exploration of the link between epistemology and cognitive sciences, to better understand the underlying mechanics of the objections that face naturalized epistemology. / Graduate / 0422 / 0621 / soushi@gmail.com
