Opportunities for Change : The impact of putting marginalized user groups first in urban redesign

Garord, Lucian Madalin January 2018 (has links)
This thesis aims at discovering how the city of Oslo can use an opportunity in rebuilding its city centre and begin to include the voices and opinions of marginalised communities that were otherwise previously ignored in planning processes. The theory and approach utilised throughout this thesis is feminist urban planning and gender mainstreaming because the two call for the equality and intersectionality so to appropriately rebuild cities with the needs of many in mind. As such, my hypotheses are that the car free centre will not improve the quality of life for marginalised user groups and the lack of gender mainstreaming policy has negatively impacted the five pilot project areas. Three methodologies have been employed: observations of the five pilot projects, interviews or questionnaires to stakeholders, and secondary analysis of literature. The results from the observations were varied, with some examples of gender mainstreaming practices implemented while others fell short and safety of users was questioned. Some practitioners had knowledge on feminist urban planning theory, whilst others had vague ideas of what it meant and how it was implementable in practice. To conclude, implementing gender mainstreaming policies would have gravely assisted the five pilot projects.

Urban activation through food : Stockholm’s new food destination / Urban aktivering genom mat : Stockholms nya matdestination

Reis, Mayra January 2019 (has links)
Responding to the needs of a rapidly growing urban population, Stockholm is investing in multiple urban development projects, one of which being Slatkthusområdet, the so-called meatpacking district located in the southern area of the city. Atrium Ljungberg, the Swedish developer responsible for a big parcel of the land in the area, envisions making the slaughterhouse district into an attractive destination for business, society and people in search of cultural life. The developer aims to transform the location from an industrial site to a lively neighbourhood for the society, with a diversity of activities that will work together with a food market in one of the main buildings of the area. Their plan is to establish a food destination that will have a leading role in Slakthusområdet. In the long run, the food destination will become the hub and the unifying link between the various actors and residents of the area, but also a destination that will lift Stockholm as a reference city for gastronomic experiences. It is a crucial issue to look at the identity and experience of a place, especially when proposing the urban renewal for an area that has long been known to have a significant representation in a city. By utilizing placemaking tools and lessons from the feminist urban planning movement, I ask how can we - urban planners, designers, and architects - contribute to placemaking by encouraging certain behaviours, such as collective cooking? Furthermore, from a commercial point of view: how to brand a place? Is it possible to make a win-win, where the developer, the inhabitant, the city, all gain from a place establishing an identity through food? While using Slatkthusområdet as a case study, this thesis project aims to undergo a review of the actions happening in the area, and the actors involved, in order to propose a strategic plan for the urban renewal of the neighbourhood. This plan could be used by the authorities responsible for making decisions regarding urban planning in the city of Stockholm. The celebratory nature of food is universal In search of the universal element that could inspire the creation of public spaces in Slakthusormrådet and extend the domestic life from indoors to outdoors, food as a social tool was continuously appearing as a recommendation during my search. Every single culture and religion uses food as part of their celebrations. Sometimes food means survival, sometimes a status, and in many cases, it is a synonym for pleasure. Regardless of the reason, everyone needs to eat, and the process of cooking and preparing each meal is part of many domestic lives around the world. Slakthusområdet is the ideal scenario to experiment with this concept: their history is connected to food production, and the leading developer of the area has the intention to establish the site as a food destination in the city. Thus, I aim to use eating habits to bringing different groups to the public spaces attracted by one common interest: food

: Reformulating the public toilet

Werner, Isabella January 2020 (has links)
Public toilets are often unclean, dull and designed with cold materials with no interest in creating a pleasant environment other than strictly satisfying needs. In my degree project, I have tried to bring life to the public toilet. Here, I want to let colour, form and playfulness be a part of the functionality. Whether you come to pause alone for a moment, or if you are in a hurry and just looking for an ordinary (but good!) toilet, you should find a place made with care. Based on feminist urban planning, I have tried to provide for needs that are not always included in the design of the public environment, for example by planning children’s toilets and a breastfeeding room. I have placed the toilet in Slussen’s metro station, where today there is no free public toilet, even though thousands of people pass here daily. Slussen’s tiles, art decorations and aesthetics have influenced the expression of the restroom, intertwined with the feeling and architecture of antique baths, hammams and Japanese bathing culture. The colourful, odd and carefully designed toilets I have come across, in many cases abroad and made during the early part of the 20th century, have inspired my design proposal, and also laid the foundation for my choice of theme in this degree project.

Trygghetsfrämjande möbler för det gemensamma uterummet : En designprocess med utgångspunkt i feministisk stadsplanering / Safe promoting furniture’s for public outdoor spaces : A design process based on feminist urban planning

Högberg, Sofia January 2020 (has links)
Our common urban landscape has traditionally been designed with men in mind. Manyplaces are perceived by women as threatening and exclusionary, while some simply do nothave anything that appeals to women and girls, and therefore becomes something theychoose to refrain from. This is a problem from an equality perspective as it causes women and girls to be restrictedand excluded from parts of society, something that affects many levels, and which the UNGlobal Action Plan Agenda 2030 intends to amend. My bachelor’s thesis is about designing outdoor furniture for a specific location underreconstruction in an area in Västerås. The furniture’s are designed to promote a sense ofsecurity and reduce exclusion with women and girls in particular in mind. The starting point for the design process is feminist urban planning and previouslycompleted projects where there is clearly a feminist approach, since that according to manyis the most effective way to actually create common places that in practice appeals to, andare used by everyone. The result is a product range that allows for a great deal of variation in furnishings and issuitable for many different types of places around our common urban landscape.

Trygghet i stadsmiljöer och offentliga toaletter : Feeling safe in public spaces and restrooms

Thudén, Lisa January 2019 (has links)
The planning, structure and shape of our urban environments affects our mindsets and perception of safety. The fear of being exposed to crimes causes many, especially women, to avoid certain public places completely. This proves the necessity of increasing and improving the mobility and safety for women in public spaces. This is the topic of this project, and the focus is on public toilets. The issue is relevant and it is based on the fact that cities traditionally have provided more toilets adapted to men (such as urinals), and existing toilets rarely being designed and equipped to fit the needs of women, girls and parents of young children. The purpose of this project is to improve the availability, design and experience of public restrooms. How can one, using design, improve the public space to feel more safe and accessible for men and women on equal terms.
