Romantic children, brazen girls? An exploration of the girl-child’s representation in and around Nabokov’s Lolita and three derivative novels

Thesis (MA (English))--University of Stellenbosch, 2010. / Thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Arts at the University of Stellenbosch / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Since 1995, three female authors have published novels narrating the events of Vladimir Nabokov’s novel Lolita from Lolita’s point of view. What is it about the character Lolita that prompts writers to rework Nabokov’s text? In an attempt to answer this question this thesis explores reader-responses to Lolita. The grand narrative of girlhood is illuminated, and it emerges that, influenced by the discourse of Romanticism, girls’ subjectivity in the Western world is governed by an ‘innocent-or-corrupt’ dichotomy. As a result, Lolita, who seduces her stepfather, Humbert Humbert, has been vilified by readers through the decades, so that very little further critical attention has been given to her representation in the text. However, in recent years rising concern over the representation of girls has seen renewed interest in Lolita from feminist quarters, with Lolita’s non-representation being critics’ main concern. These derivative novels work towards compiling a body of feminist criticism on Lolita. A secondary function of the derivatives is the restructuring of the grand narrative of girlhood: in other words, the erasure of the ‘innocent-or-corrupt’ dichotomy in favour of a wide range of conceivable subjectivities. This is necessary because the sexualised images of girls in the media are in danger of representing girl-children as one-dimensional sexual objects. Both feminist critics and critical theorists are calling for a new form of resistance to these hegemonic media forms, so that a collaboration between the two fields seems useful. This thesis argues that the existence of the derivative novels point to the emergence of a new form of feminist resistance to the oppressive representations of advancing technological society. Consequently, the thesis performs a reading of Lolita and three derivative novels to ascertain how the girl-child is represented. Issues of interest include the Romantic discourse of childhood, the representational practices of advancing technological society, and girls’ agency. Finally, conclusions are drawn about the effectiveness of each derivative novel in terms of their contributions to both the Lolita-discourse and the feminist endeavour to restructure the grand narrative of girlhood. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Drie vroueskrywers het sedert 1995 romans gepubliseer wat die gebeure van Vladimir Nabokov se roman Lolita uit Lolita se oogpunt oorvertel. Wat is dit omtrent die karakter Lolita wat skrywers aanspoor om Nabokov se teks te hersien? In ‘n poging om hierdie vraag te beantwoord verken hierdie tesis leser-reaksies op Lolita. Die meesternarratief oor jongmeisieskap word blootgelê en dit kom na vore dat meisies se subjektiwiteit in die Westerse wêreld, onder die invloed van die Romantiese diskoers, regeer word deur die digotomie van ‘onskuldig-of-korrup’. Gevolglik is Lolita, wat haar stiefpa, Humbert Humbert, verlei, oor die dekades heen deur lesers sleggemaak, sodat baie min kritiese aandag verder aan haar gewy is. Hierdie tesis doen dit aan die hand dat die bestaan van Lolita-verkwerkings bewys is van die ontluiking van ‘n nuwe vorm van feministiese teenstand teen die verdrukkende uitbeeldings van die vooruitgaande tegnologiese samelewing. Gevolglik analiseer hierdie tesis Lolita en drie verwerkings om vas te stel hoe die meisiekind uitgebeeld word. Sake van belang sluit die Romantiese diskoers van kindwees, die uitbeeldingspraktyke van die toenemend tegnologiese samelewing, en meisies as agente in. Uiteindlik word gevolgtrekkings gemaak oor die effektiwiteit van elke roman ten opsigte van hul bydraes tot beide die Lolita-diskoers en die feministiese poging om die meesternarratief aangaande jongmeisieskap te herstruktureer.

Among these, the highlight the solid oxide fuel cell intermediate temperature (IT-SOFC). For application as electrolyte of the devices doped based CeO2 with rare earth ions (TR+ 3) have been quite promising because they have good ionic conductivity and operate at relatively low temperatures (500-800 ? C). In this work, studied the Ce1-xEuxO2-δ (x = 0,1, 0,2 and 0,3), solid solutions synthesized by the polymeric precursor method to be used as solid electrolyte. It was also studied the processing steps of these powders (milling, compaction and two step sintering) in order to obtain dense sintered pellets with reduced grain size and homogeneous microstructure. For this, the powders were characterized by thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, particle size distribution and scanning electrons microscopy, since the sintered samples were characterized by dilatometry, scanning electrons microscopy, density and grain size measurements. By x-ray diffraction, it was verified the formation of the solid solution for all compositions. Crystallites in the nanometric scale were found for both sintering routes but the two step sintering presented significant reduction in the average grain size / Diante da preocupa??o ambiental com o aquecimento global que ocorre principalmente pelas emiss?es de CO2 resultante da queima de combust?veis derivados do petr?leo, carv?o e g?s natural, as pesquisas voltadas para formas alternativas e n?o poluentes de gera??o de energia v?m se intensificando. Entre essas, destacam-se as c?lulas a combust?vel de ?xido s?lido de temperatura intermedi?ria (IT-SOFC). Rare earths doped ceria has been widely investigated as an alternative material for the electrolyte of solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs) due to its high ionic conductivity at low operating temperatures compared with the traditional electrolytes based on stabilized zirconia. This work investigates the effect of gallium oxide (Gallia) as a sintering aid in Eu doped ceria ceramic electrolytes since this effect has already been investigated for Gd, Sm and Y doped ceria electrolytes. The desired goal with the use of a sintering aid is to reduce the sintering temperature aiming to produce dense ceramics. In this study we investigated the effects on densification, microstructure and ionic conduction caused by different molar fraction of the dopants europium (10, 15 and 20%) and gallium oxide (0.3, 0.6 and 0.9%) in samples sintered at 1300, 1350 and 1450 0 C. Samaria (10 and 20%) doped ceria samples sintered between 1350 and 1450 ?C were used as reference. Samples were synthesized using the cation complexation method. The ceramics powders were characterized by XRF, XRD and SEM, while the sintered samples were investigated by its relative density, SEM and impedance spectroscopy. It was showed that gallia contents up to 0.6% act as excellent sintering aids in Eu doped ceria. Above this aid content, gallia addition does not promote significant increase in density of the ceramics. In Ga free samples the larger densification were accomplished with Eu 15% molar, effect expressed in the microstructure with higher grain growth although reduced and surrounded by many open pores. Relative densities greater than 95 % were obtained by sintering between 1300 and 1350 ?C against the usual range 1500 - 1600 0 C. Samples containing 10% of Sm and 0.9% of Ga reached 96% of theoretical density by sintering at 1350 0 C for 3h, a gain compared to 97% achieved with 20% of Sm and 1% of Ga co-doped cerias sintered at 1450 0 C for 24 h as described in the literature. It is found that the addition of gallia in the Eu doped ceria has a positive effect on the grain conductivity and a negative one in the grain boundary conductivity resulting in a small decrease in the total conductivity which will not compromise its application as sintering aids in ceria based electrolytes. Typical total conductivity values at 600 and 700 ?C, around 10 and 30 mS.cm -1 respectively were reached in this study. Samples with 15% of Eu and 0.9 % of Ga sintered at 1300 and 1350 ?C showed relative densities greater than 96% and total conductivity (measured at 700 ?C) between 20 and 33 mS.cm -1 . The simultaneous sintering of the electrolyte with the anode is one of the goals of research in materials for SOFCs. The results obtained in this study suggest that dense Eu and Ga co-doped ceria electrolytes with good ionic conductivity can be sintered simultaneously with the anode at temperatures below 1350 ?C, the usual temperature for firing porous anode materials / As c?lulas a combust?vel s?o tidas como uma das mais promissoras formas de convers?o de energia el?trica devido ao seu alto rendimento e por utilizar o hidrog?nio como combust?vel, considerado por muitos a principal fonte limpa de energia para o futuro. Neste seguimento de pesquisa, este trabalho investiga o efeito do ?xido de g?lio (G?lia) como aditivo de sinteriza??o em eletr?litos cer?micos a base de c?ria dopada com eur?pio, uma vez que este efeito j? foi investigado por outros em eletr?litos ? base de c?ria dopada com Gd, Sm e Y. A meta almejada com a utiliza??o do aditivo de sinteriza??o ? reduzir a temperatura de sinteriza??o para a produ??o de cer?micas densas. Neste trabalho investigou-se o efeito na densifica??o, na microestrutura e na condu??o i?nica causado por diferentes fra??es molares do dopante eur?pio (10, 15 e 20%) e do aditivo de sinteriza??o ?xido de g?lio (0,3; 0,6 e 0,9%), em amostras sinterizadas a 1300, 1350 e 1450 0 C. A c?ria co-dopada com 10 e 20% de Sm e com os mesmos teores do aditivo de sinteriza??o g?lia, sinterizadas a 1350, 1450 e 1500 0 C, tamb?m foi investigada, por sua vez, como par?metro de refer?ncia experimental, haja visto que, nesta pesquisa, adotou-se s?nteses pelo m?todo de complexa??o de c?tions enquanto que os trabalhos encontrados na literatura utilizaram o m?todo convencional. Os p?s cer?micos sintetizados foram caracterizados por FRX, DRX e MEV e as amostras cer?micas sinterizadas por sua densidade relativa, MEV e espectroscopia de imped?ncia. Verifica-se que a G?lia com teores at? 0,6% atua como um excelente aditivo de sinteriza??o na c?ria dopada com Eu. Acima deste teor e at? 0,9% a adi??o da g?lia n?o promove significativos aumentos na densidade da cer?mica. Nas amostras livres do Ga, as maiores densifica??es foram alcan?adas com 15% de Eu, efeito manifestado na micro-estrutura com os maiores crescimentos de gr?os, embora ainda reduzidos e circundados por muitos poros abertos. Densidades relativas superiores a 95% da densidade te?rica podem ser obtidas com sinteriza??es entre 1300 e 1350 0 C, contra as usuais 1500 a 1600 0 C. Com a c?ria co-dopada com 10% de Sm e 0,9% de Ga alcan?ou-se neste trabalho 96% da densidade te?rica com sinteriza??o a 1350 0 C por 3h, um ganho em rela??o aos 97% alcan?ados com a c?ria co-dopada com 20% de Sm e 1% de Ga sinterizada a 1450 0 C por 24h conforme encontrado na literatura. Verifica-se que a adi??o da G?lia em eletr?litos ? base de c?ria dopada com Eu apresenta efeito positivo na condutividade do gr?o e negativo na do contorno de gr?o resultando em uma pequena redu??o na condutividade total, a qual n?o compromete sua promissora aplica??o como aditivo de sinteriza??o. Valores t?picos da condutividade total a 600 e 700 0 C, em torno de 10 e 30 mS.cm -1 respectivamente, foram alcan?ados neste trabalho. As amostras de eletr?litos ? base de c?ria co-dopada com 15% de Eu e 0,9% de Ga, sinterizados a 1300 e 1350 0 C, alcan?aram densidades relativas superiores a 96% e condutividade a 700 0 C entre 20 e 33 mS.cm -1 . The fingerlings of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), commun carp (Cyprinus carpio) and tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) were submitted to the herbicide roundup in the following concentrations: 0.0 (control); 18,06; 19,10; 20,14; 21,18 and 22,22 mg.L-1, 0.0 (control); 13,89; 14,86; 15,83; 16,81 and 17,78 mg.L-1, and 0.0 (control); 18,06; 19,10; 20,14; 21,18 and 22,22 mg.L-1, respectively, three for 96 hours. The LC50 - 96h for O. niloticus, C. carpio and C. macropomum was 21,63, 15,33 and 20,06 mg.L-1 of the herbicide roundup, respectively. The results show that this herbicide is classified as slightly toxic to the three species. The values of dissolved oxygen, pH and temperature recorded in the aquarium control and aquarium experimental of the three fish species have remained without significant variations during the tests, which reduces the possibility of death caused by sudden variations of these parameters during the 96 hours the experiment. The values of LC50 between different species of fish were observed, noting that the species O.niloticus, C. carpio and C. macropomum showed no expressive differences. The values of environmental risk of Roundup were calculated to obtain more stringent parameters in assessing the dangerousness of those on nontargets. The risk of environmental contamination by Roundup for the Nile tilapia, common carp, and tambaqui are low for the lowest application rate (1 L.ha-1) and depths (1.5 and 2.0 m). The dilution of 100%, the highest recommended dose (5 L.ha-1) and depths (1.5 and 2.0 m) the risk is moderate for the three species. The values of the Risk Ratio (QR) were greater than 0,1, indicating that the values of the CAE and LC50 are above acceptable levels and there is a need, this study, a refinement in ecotoxicological tests / Considerando a import?ncia comercial, por se tratarem das esp?cies de ?gua-doce mais comercializadas no Brasil, por ocorrerem em diversos tipos de ambientes aqu?ticos (lagos, rios e a?udes) e ainda por serem tolerantes a um amplo espectro de varia??o de diversos par?metros f?sicos e qu?micos da ?gua, as esp?cies de peixes Oreochromis niloticus, Cyprinus carpio e Colossoma macropomum foram escolhidas para este estudo com a finalidade de testar a toxicidade do herbicida roundup. Diante do exposto, o presente trabalho teve como objetivo determinar a toxicidade aguda e avaliar o risco de contamina??o ambiental dessas tr?s esp?cies de peixes pelo herbicida Roundup. Os alevinos de Til?pia do Nilo (Oreochromis niloticus), Carpa-comum (Cyprinus carpio) e Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) foram submetidos ao herbicida roundup nas seguintes concentra??es: 0,0 (controle); 18,06; 19,10; 20,14; 21,18 e 22,22 mg.L-1, 0,0 (controle); 13,89; 14,86; 15,83; 16,81 e 17,78 mg.L-1 e 0,0 (controle); 18,06; 19,10; 20,14; 21,18 e 22,22 mg.L-1, respectivamente, os tr?s por 96 horas. A CL50 96h para O. niloticus, C. carpio e C. macropomum foi de 21,63, 15,33 e 20,06 mg.L-1 do herbicida roundup, respectivamente. Os resultados obtidos demonstram que esse herbicida est? classificado como levemente t?xico para as tr?s esp?cies. Os valores de oxig?nio dissolvido, pH e temperatura registrados no aqu?rio controle e nos aqu?rios experimentais das tr?s esp?cies estudadas mantiveram-se sem varia??es significativas ao longo dos testes, o que reduz a possibilidade de mortalidade causada por varia??es bruscas desses par?metros, durante as 96 horas de experimento. Os valores das CL50 entre as diferentes esp?cies de peixes foram observadas, constatando que as esp?cie Oreochromis niloticus, Colossoma macropomum e Cyprinus carpio n?o apresentaram diferen?as expressivas. Os valores de risco ambiental do Roundup foram calculados para a obten??o de par?metros mais rigorosos na avalia??o da periculosidade desses sobre organismos n?o-alvos. O risco de contamina??o ambiental por roundup para a til?pia do Nilo, carpa-comum e tambaqui s?o baixos para a menor dose de aplica??o (1 L.ha-1) e nas profundidades (1,5 e 2,0 m). Na dilui??o de 100%, na maior dose recomendada (5 L.ha-1) e nas profundidades (1,5 e 2,0 m) o risco ? moderado para as tr?s esp?cies. Os valores de Quociente de Risco (QR) foram maiores que 0,1, indicando que os valores da rela??o CAE e CL50 est?o acima dos n?veis aceit?veis, havendo a necessidade de um refinamento nas an?lises ecotoxicol?gicas

Within this context, the work aimed the development/proposition a methodology and alternative technology for treatment domestic sewage of residences located in rural area, specifically for the treatment of effluents generated in the kitchen sink and the toilet bowl. For this, was performed the domestic effluents source characterization through the management diagnostic of domestic wastewater in Paraná state and the city of Toledo; domestic effluents qualitative (physical, chemical and biological parameters) and quantitative (daily and monthly volume) characterization; performance evaluation of the conventional methods, processes and technologies for treatment of rural areas domestic sewage; the method and the technology design/developing for the rural domestic sewage treatment from the toilet bowl and kitchen sink; the construction, operation and monitoring of alternative technology; and the agreement analysis. From the results obtained in the first step, it was found that in Paraná state rural areas are generated over 261 thousand m³ day-1 of domestic sewage, in the city of Toledo rural area are produced 37,410.8 m3 of domestic effluent monthly. In the evaluation step of treatment methods and technologies it was verified the existence of technical limitations and bottlenecks in the equipment, prevailing the low treatment efficiency. Based on detailed studies of the physical, chemical and biological fundamentals and testing bench, was developed the project of alternative technology containing a feces and urine separator; a helical anaerobic bioreactor with tubular shape for the feces. The technology alternative prototype operation showed satisfactory results with respect the feces and urine separation and the feces stabilization in the reactor was completed in just 30 days of treatment forming a residual without the E. coli presence (<1 NMP g-1). / A ausência no uso de sistemas de tratamento de efluentes domésticos na área rural promove frequentes casos de contaminação do solo e dos recursos hídricos, bem como contribui com a disseminação de doenças entre a população. Nesse contexto, o objetivo do trabalho foi o desenvolvimento/proposição de uma tecnologia alternativa para o tratamento dos efluentes gerados no vaso sanitário e na pia da cozinha de residências da área rural. Para isso, realizou-se a caracterização da fonte geradora de efluentes domésticos por meio do diagnóstico da gestão dos efluentes doméstico no estado do Paraná e no município de Toledo; a caracterização quantitativa (volume diário e mensal) e qualitativa (parâmetros físicos, químicos e biológicos) dos efluentes domésticos; a avaliação do desempenho dos métodos, processos e tecnologias convencionais para o tratamento de efluentes domésticos das áreas rurais; o projeto/desenvolvimento do método e da tecnologia alternativa para o tratamento dos efluentes domésticos rurais provenientes do vaso sanitário e da pia da cozinha; a construção, operação e monitoramento da tecnologia alternativa; e a análise de concordância. A partir dos resultados obtidos na primeira etapa, constatou-se que nas áreas rurais do estado do Paraná são gerados mais de 261 mil m³. dia-1 de efluentes domésticos, na área rural da cidade de Toledo são produzidos 37410,8 m3 de esgoto domestico mensalmente. Na etapa de avaliação dos métodos e tecnologias de tratamento, constatou-se a existência de limitações e gargalos técnicos nos equipamentos, prevalecendo à baixa eficiência no tratamento. Com base em estudos detalhados dos fundamentos físicos, químicos e biológicos e dos testes de bancada, foi desenvolvido o projeto da tecnologia alternativa contendo um separador de fezes e urina, um biorreator anaeróbico helicoidal de formato tubular para o tratamento das fezes. A operação do protótipo da tecnologia alternativa apresentou resultados satisfatórios quanto a segregação das fezes e da urina e a estabilização dos dejetos no reator foi completa em apenas 30 dias de tratamento originando um composto sem a presença de E. coli (<1 NMP g-1).

The aim of thesis is to create an overview of the holistic concept of domestic palliative care in the context of social work. This overview includes identification of the needs of people in the terminal stage of life and the dilemmas that families face in the final stage of the lives of their loved ones. The individual chapters of this thesis describe the needs of the dying and informal caregivers, and they point out the importance of the family environment for coping with death-related concerns. The qualitative survey carried out via semi-structured interviews includes identification of the needs of the dying and caregivers, the dilemmas of caregivers in making decisions about choosing the form of care for their loved ones, and mapping the awareness of caregivers about the possibilities of social work support.

Optimering av produktionslina på tillverkande enhet i Sverige / Optimization of production line in manufacturing unit in Sweden

Denna studies syfte är att leverera ett förslag på hur ett tillverkande företag i Sverige kan öka sin kapacitet, sitt genomflöde och flexibilitet i en manuell produktionslina. Produktionsgolvet är trångt för de anställda på grund av stora lagernivåer intill produktionslinan. Det finns fem arbetsstationer, tre flaskhalsar i produktionen och antalet PIA (Produkter I Arbete) är högt. Studien genomför mätningar för att kartlägga nuläget, hur den aktuella layouten och prestandan ser ut. För att mäta nuläget samlar studien in data genom observationer, en processpromenad, informella intervjuer och genomför egna mätningar. Datainsamlingen analyseras med hjälp av teorier och metoder från Lean, TOC (Theory of Constrains), linjebalansering och produktionsledning. Studien använder sig av 5s som angreppssätt för att systematiskt uppnå genomgående renhet av arbetsplatsen och en standardisering av påfyllnads- och prognostiseringsprocessen. Studien finner att för att öka produktionslinans kapacitet kan bemanningen på produktionslinan ökas, med detta som utgångspungspunkt föreslås en ny layout som tillåter två extra anställda att arbeta på produktionslinan. Detta uppnås genom att dela upp nuvarande delmoment i produktionslinan och skapa två extra stationer. Detta ändrar antalet arbetsstationer från fem till sju och tillåter två extra anställda att arbeta i produktionslinan. Detta eliminerar också två mindre flaskhalsar i produktions flödet. Vidare innefattar förslaget en ny rutin för påfyllnad- och prognostiseringsprocessen som bestämmer hur många artiklar som ska lagerföras vid produktionslinan. Till sist föreslås att den nu enda flaskhalsen ska styra takten, vilket gör processen till ett dragande system styrt av efterfråga istället för ett styrt av generell tillgång. Detta innefattar också att produktionslinan ska börja tillverka ett säkerhetslager med färdiga produkter, detta säkerhetslager ska bytas ut kontinuerligt för att hindra produkterna passerar utgångsdatum. Resterande majoritet av produktionen ska endast ske mot kundorder istället för mot ett lager. För att implementera förslaget bör organisationen utbilda sig och dess anställda i teorierna studien använder sig av. Både ledning och anställda i produktionslinan måste förstå teorierna och varför de används för att implementeringen ska lyckas. / The purpose of this study is to deliver a proposition on how a Swedish manufacturing company can improve its’ capacity, flow and flexibility in a manual production line. The production floor is crowded as a result of large quantities of articles adjacent to the production line. The production line has five workstations, three bottlenecks and has a high number of WIP (Work-In-Progress). The study collects data to assess the situation, the production lines performance and how the current layout is planned. To measure the current situation the study collects data through observations, a process tour, informal interviews and conducts its own measurements. The collected data is analysed using theories and methods from lean, TOC (Theory of Constrains), line balancing and production management. The study is approaching the problems using 5s to systematically achieve pervading cleanness in the workplace and a standardisation of the refilling- and prognostication process. The study finds that to increase the capacity of the production line, the staffing can be increased. Using this as a standing point, the study proposes a new production layout that allows two extra employees to work on the production line. This is achieved by creating two additional workstations in the production line. Changing the number of stations from five to seven and allowing two extra employees to work in the production line. This layout change also eliminates two smaller bottlenecks in the production flow. Furthermore, the propositions suggest a new routine for the refilling- and prognostication process that determines how many articles to store within the production floor. Lastly the proposition suggests that the now single bottleneck in the production flow decides the production rate. Making the production line a pulling system set by the demand of the bottleneck, rather than a system set by general assets. This also includes that the production line is going to start producing safety stock of completed products, this safety stock will continuously be replaced to prevent the products from passing expiration date. The remaining majority of the production should only be done by customer order, rather than producing to store complete products. In order to implement the proposition, the organization need to educate itself and its employees, both management and workers need to understand the concepts the proposition uses and why the concepts are used in order for the implementation to be successful. / <p>Sekretess</p>

Utformning av verkstadslayout för paketeringsverkstad / Design of factory layout for packaging workshop

Detta examensarbete är en del av utbildningen Högskoleingenjör inom Maskinteknik, Industriell Ekonomi &amp; Produktion i Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan. Målet och syftet med detta examensarbete är förbättra ergonomi och arbetssätt i Verkstaden X genom framställning av två nya verkstadslayouter. Detta ska lösa deras problem gällande flaskhalsar och belastningsskador vilket ger upphov till långa leveranstider och arbetsskador. För att framställa förbättringsförslag på deras nuvarande problem kommer en implementering av LEAN- filosofin samt ergonomiläran att utföras i den nya verkstadslayouten. För att lyckas med detta studerades flera tidigare forskningsartiklar, iakttagelser, intervjuer samt litteraturstudier. De som intervjuades var anställda och arbetsledare i Verkstaden X där de bidrog med att identifiera och analysera deras nuvarande problem hos den studerande avdelningen samt vad som gav upphov till flaskhalsar och belastningsskador. Genom datainsamling framställdes två nya verkstadslayouter som främjar LEAN- filosofier och ergonomi i verkstadens arbetsflöde och arbetssätt. Verkstadslayouter utformades som 2D ritning där arbetsflödet och anställdas arbetsuppgifter beskrivs, samt kartläggning av arbetsstationer och förflyttningen av varor samt order. Verkstaden X har flera slöserier vilket leder till att de besitter en kapacitet som inte kan förhålla sig till den efterfrågan som finns, som är dötider mellan och i arbetsstationer, ineffektiva arbetssätt och brist på instruktioner. Skribenterna i denna rapport konstaterar att Verkstaden X arbetsflöde kan förhålla sig till den efterfrågan som finns genom de förbättringsförslag som framhävts i detta examensarbete. De förbättringsförslag är nya arbetsrutiner, vilket innebär att sorteraren ska använda handdatorer och att paketerare ska använda sig av nya arbetsbänkar som ger mått på vilka kartongen som ska användas, dessa nya utrustningar förändrar arbetsrutiner. Även bättre kommunikation mellan arbetsledare och anställd var ett av lösningsförslagen, där arbetsledaren kontor flyttas in i avdelningen för att arbetsledaren ska kunna ha större närvaro. / This thesis project is part of a bachelor’s program in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Economics &amp; Production at the Royal Institute of Technology. The goal and purpose of this thesis is to improve ergonomics and working methods in Verkstaden X by producing two new workshop layouts. This is meant to solve their problems regarding bottlenecks and repetitive strain damage, which gives rise to long delivery times and work injuries. In order to make suggestions for improvement on their current problems, an implementation of the LEAN philosophy and the ergonomics theory will be carried out in the new workshop layout. To succeed in this, several previous research articles, observations, interviews, and literature studies were studied. The interviewees were employees and supervisors in Verkstaden X where they helped to identify and analyze their current problems in the student department and what gave rise to bottlenecks and strain injuries. Through data collection, two new workshop layouts were produced that promote LEAN philosophies and ergonomics in the workshop's workflow and working methods. Workshop layouts were designed as a 2D drawing where the workflow and employees' tasks are described, as well as mapping of workstations and the movement of goods and orders. Verkstaden X has several wastes, which means that they have a capacity that cannot relate to the demand that exists, which is downtime between and in workstations, inefficient working methods, and lack of instructions. Then the two layout proposals were compared with each other with Pugh matrix, where Layoutsförlag 2 was considered the best layout proposal, and which was recommended to Verkstaden X. The authors of this report state that Verkstaden X workflow can relate to the demand that exists through the improvement proposals highlighted in this thesis. The suggestions for improvement are new work routines, which means that the sorter must use PDAs and that the packer must use new workbenches that provide measurements of which packages to use, this means that the new equipments change the work routines. Better communication between supervisor and employee was also one of the solution proposals, where the supervisors office is moved into the department to ensure more presence.

LKAB Mekaniska i Kiruna, Sverige är en ståltillverkare som bland annat producerar avropsartikeln lingenomföring till moderbolaget LKAB. Målet med detta examensarbete är att minska på leveranstiden för sistnämnda artikel. För att åstadkomma detta undersöktes produktionsflödet i affärssystemet Monitor. Därtill genomfördes en litteraturstudie och intervjuer hölls med avdelningschefer och operatörer från LKAB Mekaniska. Utifrån detta identifierades tre faktorer som påverkar leveranstiden negativt. Dessa är kötiderna mellan operationerna, den bristfälliga planeringen som skedde vid skär- och maskinavdelningen, samt begränsningarna som höll upp produktionen i maskinavdelningen Vi hävdar att leveranstiden minskar om följande åtgärder genomförs: eliminera kötiderna mellan tillverkningsprocesserna, öka beläggningen och kapaciteten på tillverkningsmaskinen, implementera ett kanbansystem, ändra ordningsföljden i tillverkningsprocessen och slutligen införa ett säkerhetslager med färdigsvarvade stänger. / LKAB Mekaniska in Kiruna, Sweden is a steel-manufacturer that, among other things, produces lingenomföring for its parent company LKAB. The aim of this thesis is to decrease the delivery time of the aforementioned product. In order to achieve this, production flow in the business system Monitor ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) was examined. In addition to this a literature study was conducted and interviews were held with department heads and machine operators from LKAB Mekaniska. Based on data collected, three factors were identified as negatively affecting the delivery time. These are queue times between operations, inadequate planning for the cutting and machinery department, as well as the limitations that kept the production back in the machinery department. We claim that the delivery time decreases if the following measures are realized: eliminate queue times between stages in the manufacturing process, increase personnel capacity related to the manufacturing machine, implement a kanban system, change the order of the manufacturing process and lastly to introduce a storage of ready-turned bars.

Tränen überschreiten die Grenzen des Körpers von innen nach außen und werden damit zu einem sichtbaren Anzeichen eines seelischen Extremzustands. In der Arbeit wird untersucht, ob die Träne, die Körpergrenzen gefährdet oder sogar auflöst, in der modernen und gegenwärtigen Kunst Metapher und Trägerin innerästhetischer Transgression werden kann. Dies bedeutet zugleich, dass eine Umwertung der Träne, von der Perle der Reinheit zu einem bedrohlichen Fluidum, stattgefunden hat. Die Träne als eine bedrohliche Grenzüberschreiterin ist ein Motiv, das in früheren Kunstepochen so nicht anzutreffen ist. Damit verweist sie zugleich exemplarisch auf die Auflösungsstrategien, welche die Kunst des 20. und 21. Jahrhunderts bestimmen. Fotoarbeiten von Man Ray, Madame Yevonde und Sam Taylor-Wood, Zeichnungen von Pablo Picasso und Hans Bellmer, Performances von Marina Abramović und Gina Pane, Video-arbeiten von Bill Viola und Bas Jan Ader, Installationen von Daniele Buetti und eine Buchserie von Dieter Roth, denen allen das Motiv der Träne gemeinsam ist, werden in einem Close Rea-ding auf Auflösungstendenzen hin untersucht. The present study examines whether the tear, which endangers or even dispels the boundaries of the body, could be seen as a metaphor and even as an indication of aesthetic transgression in modern and contemporary art. This would mean that the tear as motif has also undergone a paradigm change, from the pearl of purity to a threatening fluid. The aspect of the tear as a transgressor of boundaries is not to be found in earlier periods of art. Accordingly, it also references the process of disintegration, which strongly determines 20th and 21st century art. Photographs by Man Ray, Madame Yevonde and Sam Taylor-Wood, drawings by Pablo Picasso and Hans Bellmer, performances of Marina Abramovic and Gina Pane, video works by Bill Viola and Bas Jan Ader, installations by Daniele Buetti and a series of books by Dieter Roth – which all deal with the tear complex – will be examined in close reading. Their connection with disintegrative tendencies will be scrutinised, and special attention given to media-specific structures and analogies.
