Salutogenic functioning amongst university administrative staff

This study provides an orientation towards coping with stress management through salutogenic functioning. Six constructs, namely, sense of coherence, hardiness, self-efficacy, potency, learned resourcefulness and locus of control, were studied as it manifest amongst random sampled university administrative staff. The literature review focused on salutogenic functioning, coping and stress, integrated in the salutogenic personality profile. The results from the research revealed positive correlations between external locus of control and self-efficacy and meaningfulness, autonomy and self control, internal locus of control and meaningfulness, internal locus of control and meaningfulness, challenge and meaningfulness. Negative correlations existed between autonomy and self-efficacy and comprehensibility, potency and all locus of control dimensions, males and females differed in their self control and external control, black africans had the lowest score on external control, and there was no relationship between age and the constructs. Burnout, work engagement and sense of coherence in female academics at two tertiary education institutions in South Africa

Female academics in higher education institutions face numerous challenges in the continuously ch~nging landscape of South African Higher Education. Numerous mergers between different institutions, increasing job demands, ever increasing class sizes and the unique demands of role conflict, inherent to the female role, contribute to the manifestation of stress and burnout (80) in this population group. The research is conducted from a salutogenic paradigm, seeking to find ways of avoiding the negative consequences of 80 and contributing towards the positive experience of Work Engagement (WE) for the female academic. The research also explores the effect of the individual academics' Sense of Cohrence (SOC) on the experience of BO and WE. The research is quantitative in nature. A psychometric instrument was sent to all the permanently employed female academics employed by Unisa and TUT, measuring their levels of 80, WE and SOC. The completed questionnaires were statisticaily analysed. The findings included average levels of 80, with definite signs that the experience of 80 is on the increase. The Cy sub-dimension of BO showed increased levels. The WE scores of the female academics were just above average. The SOC scores of the female academics were low. The main recommendations were that University management need to take cognisance of the symptoms of BO that are present in this population. Strategies need to be put in place to address these issues and the experience of WE need to be treasured and grown through definite actions from Management. Female academics also need to take personal responsibility for their own wellness and act on the initial signs of 80, rather than dismissing it as mere tiredness or lack of energy. Text in Afrikaans / Die studie fokus op die effek van krisiswerk op die helper in terme van stres, die uitbrandingsindroom en posttraumatiese stresversteuring (PTSV). Salutogeniese konstrukte as moderatorveranderlikes in die stres-siekte-verhouding word ook ondersoek. 'n Beskikbaarheidsteekproef van 52 ambulansmanne en 52 kontrolegroepwerkers is verkry. Biografiese, koherensie-, uitbrandings-, PTSV- en stresvraelyste is ingevul en statisties verwerk. Resultate dui daarop dat ambulansmanne hul werk as buitengewoon stresvol beleef en dat meer ambulansmanne diagnoseerbare PTSV vertoon. Daar blyk geen verskil tussen die twee groepe te wees nie met betrekking tot die voorkoms van uitbranding en streservaring. 'n Negatiewe verband tussen koherensiebelewing en die voorkoms van stressimptome en uitbranding is verkry. Ambulansmanne het 'n buitengewoon stresvolle werk en vertoon meer simptome van stresversteurings as mense in ander beroepe. Aanbevelings word gedoen oor hoe om die negatiewe konsekwensies van stres te verminder. / The study focuses on the effect of crisis work on the assistant in terms of stress, the burnout syndrome and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Salutogenic constructs as moderator variables in the stress-illness relationship are also investigated. An availability sample of 52 ambulancemen and 52 control group workers was obtained. Biographic, coherence, burnout, PTSD and stress questionnaires were completed and statistically processed. Results indicate that ambulancemen experience their work as exceptionally stressful and that more Ambulancemen display diagnosable PTSD. There appears to be no difference between the two groups in respect of the incidence of burnout and experience of stress. A negative connection between the experience of coherence and the incidence of stress symptoms and burnout was obtained. Ambulancemen have an exceptionally stressful job and display more symptoms of stress disorders. A salutogenic perspective of burnout in the nursing profession

The research has worked towards the general aim of generating a synthesis of burnout in the nursing profession, and also towards coming to a synthesis of burnout in nursing from the perspective of the salutogenic paradigm. Existing knowledge from the literature has been consolidated and integrated, and 'new knowledge' of the phenomenological experience of the causes and symptoms of burnout and how nurses stay healthy, were presented. Firstly was discovered that burnout, over time is caused by various factors that are individual and personal and therefore not easily discovered by other than the phenomenological method, where the life world of each individual is described. Secondly, the study ofthe strengths that nurses exhibit in order to manage the tension and stress in their lives and not to succumb to illness, proved to be a sound and descriptive paradigm with great utilisation possibilities. Three answers to the salutogenic question, namely sense of coherence, hardiness and learned resourcefulness were presented in great detail. Thirdly, it was stated that the individual nurses and the nursing practice in general be made aware of: (1) the existence of burnout, (2) the contributing factors to burnout, (3) the various manifestations ofburnout at work and in the organisation, and (4) the coping strategies available to counter this problem in a positive and salutogenic manner. The phenomenological results of this research revealed a number of issues that have implications for both the prevention and treatment of burnout in nurses. The results especially established how nurses can operationalise their inherent salutogenic qualities. Specific salutogenic coping strategies emerged via the respondents. The research took a broad view of personality in health research. It studied the psychological processes underlying the observed connections between psychological variables and health outcomes. In order to study the operationalisation of these processes, a phenomenological, person-based approach was followed. They study focussed on health phenomena and the individual nurse was retained as the unit of analysis. This approach represented a movement away from a fragmented science, infatuated with technology and linked to a singular epistemology, towards a focus on the process and dynamics of personal experience. / Psychology / D. Hälsa i ämnet Idrott och hälsa : gymnasieelevers upplevelse av hälsoundervisningen / Health in the subject of physical education and health : high school experience of health education

Sammanfattning Syfte och frågeställningar: Syftet med denna studie är att undersöka vilka kunskaper om hälsa som elever upplever att de lär sig i ämnet idrott och hälsa undervisningen, samt på vilket sätt hälsa framträder som ämnesinnehåll. Studien avser att besvara följande frågeställningar: 1. Vad upplever elever att de lär sig om hälsa i ämnet Idrott och hälsa? 2. Vilka synsätt på hälsa framkommer? 3. Vad tycker eleverna borde ingå i en hälsoundervisning?   Metod: Metoden som använts för att besvara studiens forskningsfrågor är intervjuer av kvalitativ karaktär. Åtta individuella intervjuer med gymnasieelever som läser kursen Idrott och hälsa 1 genomfördes i två olika skolor i Stockholmsområdet. Intervjuerna analyserades sedan med hjälp av Aron Antonovskys teori om hälsa, för att synliggöra salutogent och patogent perspektiv på hälsa.   Resultat: Resultatet visade att eleverna lär sig mycket om hur fysisk träning leder till att de uppnår hälsa, och att det i samband med fysisk träning även är viktigt att framförallt tänka på sin kost. Det framkommer även att eleverna har en likartad syn på hälsa som de möter i undervisningen. Denna undervisning har mycket fokus på fysiska aspekter av hälsa. Det finns dock elever som lyfter fram vikten av att även tänka på psykiska aspekter av hälsa. Det eleverna skulle vilja förändra i hälsoundervisningen är att de vill veta mer om hur de kan hantera stress samt mer om hur droger påverkar kroppen.   Slutsats: Studiens slutsats är att eleverna upplever att de får tillräckliga kunskaper om hälsa i hälsoundervisningen, och att fysisk träning är den hälsoaspekt som har mest fokus i undervisningen. Elevernas synsätt på hälsa skiljer sig till viss del från undervisningens innehåll då de i större utsträckning även lyfter psykiska aspekter av hälsa, vilket även är någonting som de vill veta mer om. Eleverna har ett intresse av att veta mer om hur de kan hantera stress i vardagen, samt att de vill veta mer om påverkan av droger och doping. / Abstract Aim: The purpose of this study is to find out what knowledge of health students experience that they learn in physical education and health, and how health is evident in the subject. The study intends to answer the following questions: 1. What do the students experience that they learn about health in the subject of physical education and health? 2. What views of health appears? 3. What do the students think should be included in a health education?   Method: The method used to answer the study's research questions is qualitative interviews. Eight individual interviews with high school students who study the course Sport and Health 1 were conducted in two different schools in the Stockholm area. The interviews were then analyzed using Aron Antonovsky's theory on health, to visualize salutogenic and pathohenic perspectives on health.   Results: The results showed that students learn a lot about how physical exercise leads to their health and that in relation to physical exercise it is also important to think about their diet. It also appears that the students have a similar view of health, with a focus on physical aspects of health. However, there are students who emphasize the importance of thinking about mental aspects of health. What the students would like to change in the health education is that they want to know more about how they can handle stress and more about how drugs affect the body.   Conclusion: The conclusion of the study show that the students experience that they have sufficient knowledge of health in the health education, and that physical exercise is the health aspect that has the most focus during class. The students' approach to health differs to a certain extent from the content of the teaching, as they also raise mental aspects of health slightly more, which is also something they want to know more about Students have an interest in knowing more about how they can handle stress in their daily lives and want to know more about the effects of drugs and doping.

This study aims to examine the views of care managers in eldercare, on the mental health of the elderly, and how the care managers work to promote this mental health among those they care for. Thus, the study has a salutogenic perspective in that it focuses on what leads to mental health, rather than mental illness. The study was conducted as a qualitative study and is based on eight semi-structured interviews, all held with care managers in eldercare. The results of the interviews were analyzed thematically and compared to earlier research and Aaron Antonovsky's theory of SOC (sense of coherence). It turns out that care managers within eldercare give a clear picture of what they think causes mental illness among those they care for, with concrete suggestions on how they would wish to work preventively to promote elderly mental health - results that align with the theory of SOC (sense of coherence).

Purpose: The purpose of the study is to analyze which psychosocial workenvironment factors are crucial for employee health and how managers shouldwork to improve employees´s perception of the psychosocial work environment.  Method: This study is characterized by a deductive approach. The researchmethod used is a qualitative research strategy. The selection was made inaccordance with a targeted selection and the data collection consists ofinterviews.  Conclusion: The study has shown that leadership affects the psychosocial workenvironment in different ways and is a situation based phenomenon that should beadapted to the actual context. The study has identified several specific factors inthe leadership and leadership behaviors that should be fulfilled to accomplish agood psychosocial work environment. / Syfte: Syftet är att undersöka vilka psykosociala arbetsmiljöfaktorer som äravgörande för arbetstagares hälsa samt hur chefer bör arbeta för att förbättraarbetstagares upplevelse av den psykosociala arbetsmiljön Metod: Studien präglas av en deduktiv forskningsansats. Den forskningsmetodsom använts är kvalitativ forskningsstrategi. Urvalet är baserat på ett målinriktaturval och datainsamlingen består av intervjuer.  Slutsats: Studien har visat på att ledarskap påverkar den psykosocialaarbetsmiljön på flera olika sätt och är ett situationsberoende fenomen som böranpassas efter rådande kontext. Studien har dock identifierat specifika faktorer iledarskapet och ledarbeteenden som bör uppfyllas för att uppnå en godpsykosocial arbetsmiljö.

Målsättningen med föreliggande studie är att bidra med kunskap om elevers upplevelser av stödinsatser och delaktighet i grundskolan. Det är sällan som elevernas upplevelser lyfts fram i forskning och syftet med denna studie är därför att belysa hur några elever som inte varit behöriga att söka in på ett nationellt gymnasieprogram, ser på de stödinsatser de fått, eller önskat att de fått, i grundskolan samt deras upplevelse av delaktighet under samma period. Studien bygger på en kvalitativ intervjustudie med semistrukturerade frågor, där fem respondenter bidrar med sina upplevelser. De teoretiska perspektiv som studien utgår ifrån är relationellt- respektive kategoriskt perspektiv, samt salutogent- respektive patogent perspektiv. Resultatet visar på att elevernas upplevelser var övervägande negativa under låg- och mellanstadiet och mer positiva under högstadiet. Detta förklaras framför allt med att de inte kände sig delaktiga, och upplever att stödinsatserna inte var adekvata i förhållande till stödbehovet. Insikterna som framkommit i studien handlar om vikten av att lyssna in varje enskild elevs upplevelse och beakta dessa när det kommer till att utforma och utvärdera stödinsatser. Elevers upplevelser kan ha en stor påverkan på det specialpedagogiska området och bidrar i arbetet med att utveckla lärmiljön i grundskolan för att främja delaktighet. / The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding about students' experiences of support measures and participation in compulsory school. It is rare that students' experiences are highlighted in research and the purpose of this study is therefore to shed light on how some students who have not been eligible to apply for a Swedish national high school program, look at the support measures they received, or wished they had received, in primary school and their experience of participation during the same period. The study is based on a qualitative interview study with semi-structured questions, where five respondents contribute with their experiences. The theoretical perspectives on which the study is based are relational and categorical perspectives, as well as salutogenic and pathogenic perspectives. The results show that the students' experiences were predominantly negative during elementary school and more positive during middle school. This is mainly explained by the fact that they did not feel participation, nor that the support efforts were adequate in relation to their need for support. The insights that emerged in the study are about the importance of listening to each individual student's experience and taking these into account when it comes to designing and evaluating support measures. Students' experiences can have a major impact on the special education area and contribute to the work of developing the learning environment in compulsory school to promote participation.

Syfte: Syftet med studien är att öka förståelsen för om hög arbetsbelastning bidrar till ohälsa ochsjukfrånvaro bland anställda inom vård och omsorg i hemmet. Vidare kommer olika faktorersinverkan på arbetsbelastning och hälsa att kartläggas för att åstadkomma förslag som kan inverkapositivt på medarbetarnas upplevda hälsa. Metod: Studien har utgått från en kvantitativ metod med en deduktiv forskningsansats. Empiriskdata har samlats in med hjälp av två olika frågeformulär där det ena riktar sig till enhetscheferoch det andra till anställda inom vård och omsorg i hemmet. Den teoretiska referensramen utgårfrån vetenskapliga artiklar och litterära källor. Slutsats: I studien konstaterades det att hög arbetsbelastning delvis har negativ inverkan påmedarbetarnas hälsa. Vidare framgick det att obalans mellan krav och kontroll samt avsaknad avhälsofrämjande åtgärder påverkar medarbetarnas upplevda arbetsbelastning samt hälsa i negativ aspekt.

Introduktion: Psykisk ohälsa har ökat markant de senaste åren bland unga i Sverige och därmed även konsekvenser av psykisk ohälsa enligt forskningen. Flickor är i högre grad drabbade av psykisk ohälsa medan pojkar i högre utsträckning begår suicid. Orsaken till denna ökning är komplex, men det finns fortfarande stora kunskapsluckor kring varför det ser ut så. Få studier bekräftar eller beskriver arbetsmetoder och tillvägagångssätt samt effekter av samhällsaktörers hälsofrämjande och förebyggande arbete. Syfte: Denna studies syfte är att undersöka hur valda samhällsaktörer inom en region i södra Sverige arbetar hälsofrämjande med psykisk hälsa och suicidprevention hos ungdomar. Följande frågeställningar användes: Hur arbetar samhällsaktörer för att nå ut till ungdomar? Vilka arbetsmetoder använder aktörerna för att främja psykisk hälsa och suicidprevention hos ungdomar? Skiljer sig arbetsmetoderna för att främja psykisk hälsa och suicidprevention mellan pojkar och flickor? Metod: Kvalitativa semistrukturerade intervjuer genomfördes, som analyserades utifrån innehållsanalys med en induktiv ansats. Resultat: Fem kategorier växte fram: Utbildning ökar samhällsaktörers kompetens, Arbetsmetoder som stärker ungdomars psykiska hälsa, Hälsofrämjande insatser för psykisk hälsa och suicidprevention, Utmaningar i arbetet med att stärka ungdomars psykiska hälsa och Mål med hälsofrämjande- och suicidpreventivt arbete. Slutsats: Samhällsaktörers gemensamma mål var att stärka unga individer att själva söka hjälp när det förekom ett behov. Ett salutogent fokus var också närvarande samt olika tillvägagångssätt för att nå målet att stärka unga individer. Tillvägagångssätten handlade bland annat om samverkan, kunskapsutveckling och digitala verktyg. / Introduction: Mental illness has increased significantly in recent years among adolescents in Sweden thus also the consequences of mental illness according to research. Girls are more affected by mental illness while boys are more likely to commit suicide. The reason for this increase is complex, but there are still large gaps in knowledge about why it looks this way. Few studies confirm or describe work methods and approaches and effects of community workers health promotion and prevention work. Aim: The purpose of this study is to investigate how selected community workers within a region in southern Sweden work to promote mental health and suicide prevention for adolescents. Following questions were used: How do the community workers reach adolescents? Which approach do the community workers use to promote mental health and suicide prevention to adolescents? Does the method between promoting mental health and suicide prevention differ between boys and girls? Method: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted, which were analysed based on content analysis with an inductive approach. Result: Five categories emerged: Education increases the competence of community workers, Work methods that strengthen adolescents mental health, Health-promoting efforts for mental health and suicide prevention, Challenges in the work to strengthen adolescents mental health and Goals with health-promoting and suicide-preventive work. Conclusion: Community workers common goal was to empowering adolescents to seek help themselves when needed. A salutogenic focus was present as well as different approaches to reach the goal of empowering adolescents. The approaches were for instance through collaboration, knowledge development and digital tools.
