Hey, You Monster : Ideological Representation and Resisting Interpellation in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

Fridh, Jenny January 2021 (has links)
This essay discusses the representation of Victorian ideologies and interpellation in Robert Louis Stevenson’s Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. By utilising Louis Althusser’s theories of ideology and interpellation, in combination with a critical understanding of Victorian ideologies as introduced by Rosemary Jann and Jihay Park, this essay aims to analyse the characters’ representation of and submission versus the resistance to these ideologies. Additionally, by analysing whether the characters conform to the Victorian ideologies, introduced by Jann and Park, this essay proposes that non-conformity to ruling ideologies suggests resistance to interpellation, which is what constitutes a bad subject. This analysis lends itself to the discussion of how Althusser’s theories may be used in literary analyses, as well as to the discussion, initiated by Judith Butler, of whether an individual’s deviation from interpellation is possible. This essay argues that Dr. Henry Jekyll and Mr. Gabriel Utterson represent ideological functions by conforming to the Victorian ideologies, which constitute them as submitting to interpellation as good subjects. However, Mr. Edward Hyde’s non-conformity to Victorian ideologies constitutes him as resisting interpellation as a bad subject.

Herslow Deijenberg, Anna, Lundin, Michaela January 2021 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to make visible the conflicts of interest that have arisen between a municipality and one of Sweden's Trade associations. These conflicts arose when the municipality applied to become a provider for the Swedish Public Employment Service regarding a service that so far only has been procured with private actors. Furthermore, this study also aims to investigate whether democratic or economic incentives form the basis for Karlshamn's municipality and the Trade association's position regarding the conflict of interest. Based on SOU 2020:41 Municipalities as providers of services to the employment service - an analysis of the legal conditions, Karlshamn municipality has submitted an application to the Swedish Public Employment Service regarding the Kundval Rusta and matcha. The municipality of Karlshamn was the first municipality in Sweden to submit such an application. By analyzing texts from Karlshamn municipality and the Trade association as primary material through Bacchi's method WPR analysis, we intend to make visible how the problem is represented by each party as well as analyzing the incentives behind the representations of what is perceived as a problem. By linking these representations to political governance, public ethos and power, our results show that Karlshamn's municipality is driven by both democratic and economic incentives, while on the other hand the Trade association is almost exclusively driven by economic incentives. We also conclude that the current political governance of Swedish labor market policy does not favor good cooperation between actors on the Swedish labor market policy arena without reforms having to take place. It is the Swedish Public Employment Service and thus the state that possesses the power, responsibility and more specifically, the structural power to distribute who should have access to the player market. In our reference countries, this responsibility has been decentralized to local municipalities. Which we, after this study, consider to be an alternative that Sweden should investigate further.

The gaze and subjectivity in fin de siècle Gothic fiction

Foster, Paul Graham January 2007 (has links)
This thesis is concerned with the importance of the gaze in fin-de-siecle Gothic. One of the ways in which the importance of the gaze manifests itself is in the central role of the onlooker like Enfield, Utterson or Lanyon in Robert Louis Stevenson's Stange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), Prendick In H.G. Well's Island of Dr Moreau (1896), or Harker in Bram Stoker's Dracula (1897). As their appelation suggests, Wells's Beast Men confound the distinction between the human and the animal, which is also the case with 'Beast Men' like Hyde and Dracula. A central concern of the thisis is the perceptual drama that is involved in looking at the spectacle of the monstrous body, for excample, as the onlooker struggles to get to grips with the challenge to representation posed by these 'Beast Men'.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Mariana Busnardo.pdf: 282500 bytes, checksum: 0691e2a68639f6bb55fee7ccf802a9b2 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-02-28 / The present work has as a goal to focus look and a listening to the deaf citizen by means of its writing, in detriment of the lack, of the error, emphasizing itself exactly the express, the profit, the marks that in the writing, there is a singular citizen. The interest for this research appeared due to the great number of complaints about the relationship of the deaf people with writing and, mainly, for the fact of that the traditional theories concerning the acquisition of writing abilities did not consider this question; waving towards a previous question, the constitution of these citizens. The work will be structured in the following way: an initial chapter, where elements of the education of the deaf people will be brought with the intention to point out historically the relations established between "deaf world" and "listener world", prioritizing the weight that this singularity (deafness) had in the acceptance of these citizens. A second chapter, where the writing will be focused, presenting some of its meanings and functions, relating them with the demands of the deaf citizens, to search clues on the reasons of this relation to be credited as "problematic" by the listeners. The third chapter will display an effective dialogue with literal productions of two deaf citizens. For this, open interviews that had been carried through with intention to know the life history of each one and the relation that each of them considers to have with the writing will be discussed. The second step will be the analysis of texts produced by these citizens, that, as it was previously said, will have as an objective to get to know these citizens better, as well as the relation that they keep with writing, in order to be able to understand how its process of authorship in relation to this happens or has the chance to happen / O presente trabalho tem como objetivo direcionar um olhar e uma escuta ao sujeito surdo por meio de sua escrita, em detrimento da falta, do erro, enfatizando-se justamente o expresso, o ganho, as marcas de que ali, no escrito, há um sujeito singular.

Player one ready player two press "START" : En autoetnografisk studie av genuskonstruktioner i spel och spelande

Söderberg, Jennifer, Rebecka, Dahlgren January 2015 (has links)
Fyra spel från olika genrer med enbart kvinnliga protagonister valdes ut; Tomb Raider, Child of Light, Life is Strange och Gone Home.

Anglicismos na administração de empresas: reflexões cognitivistas sobre motivações de uso / Anglicisms in Business Administration: cognitivist and functional reflections on motivations behind their use

This dissertation studies the use of anglicisms (English loanwords used in texts written in Portuguese) in the discursive field of Business Administration. This research is focuses on the fact that some English terms have translations that are well accepted by Brazilian speakers, and others are simply used in their native forms. The choice of subject was motivated by the author's experience as an MBA student. In this context, both in classroom interactions with professors and peers, as well as in the literature of the area, it was found that there is great influence of American culture on current management practices and hence the English language. In addition, in the literature concerning the theme of this dissertation, we have found journal articles, dissertations and doctoral theses in the field of linguistics, which contemplated the discursive fields of journalism, computer science and economics, among others, but there was a gap in regard to Business Administration. The theoretical framework that supports this work is based on the cognitive view of language. It approaches language a symbolic system that underpins human interactions and considers it a complex adaptive system. In this research, we present reflections on the use of ten anglicisms in the context of management. The analysis, in general, endorses the theory that these words were used in Portuguese to meet interactional communicative needs of its speakers. From the perspective of language as a complex adaptive system, we realize that the attractors economy and meaning serve as motivators to use all studied items. As a result of these attractors, there are benefits in text ergonomics, since the anglicisms make communication more fluid and reader-friendly, once they make excessive explanations and text elements as references or footnotes unnecessary. Another remarkable point of these reflections was the observation of the fact that, in this area, most of the time, the anglicisms play the role of nouns, and often refer to management processes. Thus, the image schema of CONTAINER proved to be very productive in several cases. This study found linguistic legitimacy not only for the use of anglicisms, but loanwords from any other language, not just in the field of Busines Administration, but in the Portuguese language as a whole. Although there are, at times, cultural and ideological reasons for the choice of words, this work brought as a contribution the realization that, in actual use of the language, speakers seeks, above other things, to ensure the informativeness of statements, and for that reason, they resort to loanwords when necessary.
