Moving Rhizomatically: Deleuze's Child in 21st Century American Literature and FilmBohlmann, Markus P. J. 03 August 2012 (has links)
My dissertation critiques Western culture’s vertical command of “growing up” to adult completion (rational, heterosexual, married, wealthy, professionally successful) as a reductionist itinerary of human movement leading to subjective sedimentations. Rather, my project proposes ways of “moving rhizomatically” by which it advances a notion of a machinic identity that moves continuously, contingently, and waywardly along less vertical, less excruciating and more horizontal, life-affirmative trails. To this end, my thesis proposes a “rhizomatic semiosis” as extrapolated from the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari to put forward a notion of language and, by implication, subjectivity, as dynamic and metamorphic. Rather than trying to figure out who the child is or what it experiences consciously, my project wishes to embrace an elusiveness at the heart of subjectivity to argue for continued identity creation beyond the apparently confining parameters of adulthood. This dissertation, then, is about the need to re-examine our ways of growing beyond the lines of teleological progression. By turning to Deleuze’s child, an intangible one that “makes desperate attempts to carry out a performance that the psychoanalyst totally misconstrues” (A Thousand Plateaus 13), I wish to shift focus away from the hierarchical, binary, and ideal model of “growing up” and toward a notion of movement that makes way for plural identities in their becoming. This endeavour reveals itself in particular in the work of John Wray, Todd Field, Peter Cameron, Sara Prichard, Michael Cunningham, and Cormac McCarthy, whose work has received little or no attention at all—a lacuna in research that exists perhaps due to these artists’ innovative approach to a minor literature that promotes the notion of a machinic self and questions the dominant modes of Western culture’s literature for, around, and of children.

This study's main aim is to contribute with an insight regarding how employees of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) experience religion as a component of development work in religious contexts. The study focuses on whether or not religion is given enough space within Sida's development work and if the policies of Sida are enough to cover the needs in religious contexts. To answer these questions we have interviewed six employees of Sida which holds experiences of development work in religious contexts. The results show a lack of knowledge and encouragement of these questions within Sida and that the interviewees experience religion as a complex concept. The study also shows that the interviewees find policies, methods and tools within Sida as inadequate to cover the needs of religion in development work. In order to highlight and to problematize the results, the study has mainly been inspired by the secularization, the post-secularization and the sacralization theories that focuse on the role of religion in the public sphere. / Syftet med uppsatsen har varit att bidra med enförståelse för hur anställda på Sida upplever religionsfrågor som komponentinom utvecklingssamarbete i religiösa kontexter. Det vi frågat oss är vilkaupplevelser och behov av att arbeta med religionsfrågor som finns samt omreligionsfrågor ges tillräckligt med utrymme inom Sidas utvecklingssamarbete ireligiösa kontexter. För att svara på uppsatsens frågeställningar har vi utförtsex kvalitativa intervjuer med anställda på Sida som har insikt i deraslångsiktiga utvecklingssamarbete och erfarenhet av arbete i religiösakontexter. Studiens resultat visar att intervjupersonerna upplever att religionfår bristande uppmärksamhet och uppmuntran inom Sida samt att de uppleverreligion som ett komplext begrepp. Studien visar även att intervjupersonernaupplever att Sidas policyer, metoder och verktyg inte tillräckligt täcker debehov som finns av religion i utvecklingssamarbetet. I vår analys avintervjumaterialet har vi utgått från teorier om sekularisering,postsekularisering och sakralisering som belyser utvecklingen av religionensroll i den offentliga sfären.

Att rädda Sara Sand : En deleuziansk läsning av Stina Aronsons experimentella verkBerlin, Denise January 2019 (has links)
This thesis explores the creative function of the pseudonym Sara Sand, used by the author Stina Aronson for four literary works in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Två herrar blev nöjda (Two gentlemen were content), Fabeln om Valentin (The tale of Valentin), Tolv hav (Twelve oceans) and Syskonbädd (Siblingbed) are modernist and experimental works that I approach with an experimental way of reading. In order to emphasize what I find to be an inherent strive for freedom within these texts, I draw from Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattaris notion of desire as a productive force and their view of the text as a rhizomatic structure, as presented in Anti-Oedipus (1972) and A Thousand Plateaus (1980). The characters in Sara Sands writing are in constant movement and in continuous processes of becomings which challenges any kind of fixity, whether that be social structures and hegemonic discourses or simply the individual self.

Cette recherche en ethnologie de l'interculturel s'intègre dans le courant de la recherche en ethnopsychologie. Elle s'appuie sur les théories de la reconstruction sociale et symbolique de la réalité ainsi que sur la recherche portant sur la structure et les fonctions du conte traditionnel. L'objectif de cette thèse est de mieux comprendre la fonction de médiation culturelle de la littérature en situation d'interculturalité en observant la dynamique qui lie entre elles l'écriture et la lecture de romans de littérature nomade, d'une part et, d'autre part, les perceptions et les stratégies identitaires des personnes qui écrivent et des personnes qui lisent cette littérature. L'expression littérature nomade désigne une littérature dont une des caractéristiques est d'être écrite et publiée par des auteurs qui vivent, écrivent et publient dans un endroit autre que celui où ils sont nés. Ce genre de littérature contient généralement des récits de migration. Des théories sur les stratégies identitaires en contexte d'interculturalité sont aussi explorées. Puis, de nouvelles catégories de stratégies identitaires correspondant à celles qu'on observe chez les participantes à la recherche sont proposées, fournissant ainsi un modèle d'analyse novateur. La méthodologie adoptée s'appuie sur l'entretien biographique, le commentaire réflexif, ainsi que l'analyse de contenu. La recherche a fait appel à la collaboration d'une écrivaine québécoise d'origine haïtienne, Marie-Célie Agnant, de sa fille et de six lectrices. Deux romans de l'écrivaine sont utilisés comme tiers en médiation culturelle, soit les romans La dot de Sara et Le livre d'Emma. La démarche d'analyse se fait en deux étapes. Dans un premier temps, la chercheure fait ressortir la façon dont se répondent les identifications des participantes aux personnages et aux situations mis en scène dans les romans et les postures identitaires adoptées en cours d'entrevue par ces mêmes participantes. Puis, les récits livrés à travers les entretiens biographiques et les commentaires réflexifs sont reconstitués puis analysés à partir d'une grille présentant les différentes étapes du conte traditionnel merveilleux. Auparavant, il avait été établi que ces étapes étaient aussi observables dans les expériences de migration et de deuil. L'analyse des romans et des entrevues permet de dégager des stratégies identitaires nouvelles mises en oeuvre par les participantes pendant les entrevues et dans leur vie en général. Cette recherche permet aussi d'observer que la littérature nomade agit dans la communication interculturelle et dans la transmission culturelle intergénérationnelle surtout par les échos identitaires qu'elle suscite. Enfin, on constate que le rôle de la littérature nomade en médiation culturelle est grandement accentué par le retour réflexif sur l'exercice de lecture.

Une étude expérimentale a été effectuée sur diverses formules de trois familles d’enrobés bitumineux avec des taux de recyclage variables et la présence ou non de régénérant. La composition des mélanges et le procédé de fabrication ont été élaborés afin d’effectuer une étude comparative. L’enrobage produit des variations des paramètres physico-chimiques des liants telles que la consistance, la température de transition vitreuse, les fractions cristallisables, les taux d’aromatiques et d’asphaltènes ; ces variations sont limitées en présence de régénérant. Lorsque le taux d’AE augmente, la compactibilité et l’orniérage des mélanges diminuent et leur rigidité viscoélastique augmente, mais le régénérant limite ces variations. Globalement, les AE produisent une augmentation de la résistance à la fatigue des formules et un aplatissement des droites de Wöhler. Le régénérant améliore le paramètre de fatigue ɛ6 ; les performances en fatigue augmentent avec la TBA et l’indice colloïdal du liant ainsi qu’avec la diminution de la viscosité de l’enrobé. L’impact favorable d’un taux élevé d’AE et du régénérant sur le trafic admissible a été déterminé suite au dimensionnement d’une structure souple tri-couche. À basse température, la détérioration par les AE de la ductilité en traction et de la température de rupture par retrait empêché se trouvent limitées par le régénérant ; un compromis est cependant à trouver avec la résistance à la fatigue. Les formules régénérées mises en œuvre sur la couche de roulement d’une route départementale ont subi une moindre évolution après six ans de service que les mélanges non régénérés. / An experimental programme has been performed on three types of bituminous mixes with variable recycling rates and the possible addition of rejuvenator. The mix composition and the production process have been defined in order to perform a comparative analysis. The coating process modifies the physico-chemical parameters of the binders, like consistency, glassy transition temperature, cristallizable moiety, aromatics and asphaltenes rates; the above variations are limited by using the rejuvenator. As the RAP content increases, the compactibility and the rutting of the mixes decrease and the viscoelastic stiffness increases, but the rejuvenation reduces these variations. Globally, RAP increases the fatigue resistance of the mixes and flattens the Wöhler curve. Rejuvenation enhances ɛ6 fatigue parameter; fatigue performances increase with R&B temperature and colloidal index of the binder and as the viscous component of the mixes decreases. The positive impact of a high rate of RAP and of the rejuvenation on the allowable traffic has been evaluated from the structural design of a threelayered pavement. At low temperature, the deterioration of the tension ductility and of the stress restrained failure temperature produced by the RAP, is limited by the rejuvenation; a compromise with the fatigue resistance has to be found. The rejuvenated mixes laid as surface layers on a provincial road have experienced a smaller evolution that non rejuvenated mixes.

Mitt första möte med en tiggande föranledde mig att under fem år undersöka den nya situationen för tiggeriet och giveriet i Sverige. Förutsättningen är att vardagliga handlingar och reaktioner gentemot en annan människa kan synliggöras estetiskt med en etisk klangbotten. Min undersökning utspelar sig i första hand i gaturummet och i medierna. Det är hela tiden bilderna som är utgångspunkten för resonemangen och de gestaltande verken. Bilder som både separerar och länkar samman kroppar. Vilka bilder är i spel i tiggeriets och giveriets sociala koreografi? Hur kan bilder i detta sammanhang aktiveras på nya sätt? Hur kan nya genereras? Tiggandet är en uppmaning till social interaktion, och vare sig givaren socialt interagerar eller inte med den tiggande människan på gatan så involveras givaren i det europeiska samfundets asymmetriska värdesystem. I min första gestaltning anlitas en professionell marknadsundersökare för att ta reda på hur en tiggare i Sverige skulle kunna göra för att bli framgångsrik. Det blir en film som jag sedan visar mittemot en film där tiggande pratar om hur givare ger. Ur detta verk följer så en rad gestaltningar och en interdisciplinär teoretisk diskussion med bland andra Judith Butler, Sara Ahmed och Hannah Arendt, samt med en rad konstnärers arbeten, kring hur bilder – och kroppsliga handlingar – är kopplade till samhällsbilden och samhällskroppen? Körernas uppställning i gestaltningen Tiggandets kör och Givandets kör anger ett utrymme för social interaktion och demonstrerar därmed en annan ordning som kräver andra insatser, i språk, rörelse och attityd gentemot varandra. Det är en social koreografi: när körerna tränade och sjöng tillsammans uppstod en politisk form. Min förhoppning är att estetiskt synliggöra ett politiskt handlingsutrymme mellan tiggandet och givandet som kan utnyttjas för fortsatta etiska förhandlingar, och nya gestaltningar. / My first encounter with a begging person led me to spend five years investigating the new situation regarding begging and giving in Sweden. The premise is that every-day actions and reactions to another person can be made visible through aesthetics with ethical underpinnings. My investigation takes place mainly in the urban landscape and in the media. The images always constitute the point of departure for the reasoning and for the staged works. Images that separate as well as connect bodies. Which images are at play in the social choreography of begging and giving? In this context, how can images be activated in new ways? How can new images be generated? Begging is a call to social interaction, and regardless of whether the giver interacts socially with the begging person on the street, the giver is implicated in the asymmetrical value systems of the European Union. In my first staged work I hire a professional market researcher to find out how a beggar in Sweden should behave to be successful. This becomes a film that I then show opposite another film in which begging people talk about how givers give. This is followed by a number of staged works and an interdisciplinary theoretical discussion involving, among others, Judith Butler, Sara Ahmed, and Hannah Arendt, as well as a number of artistic works concerning how images – and bodily actions – are linked to the social image and the body politics. The arrangement of the choirs in the staged work The Chorus of Begging and The Chorus of Giving, indicates a space for social interaction and thus demonstrates a different order that demands different actions in terms of language, movement, and attitude toward each other. It’s a social choreography: when the choirs rehearsed and sung together a political form emerged.
