auseinanderzusetzen.

The philosophy of the postmodern regards itself as a movement of liberation and cultural emancipation. In view of its anti-totalitarian inspiration postmodern philosophy is linked with the hope of a post-war age, because it believes it can put the times of war behind it together with the times of totalities. A discourse analysis of the writings of three philosophers who are of central importance for the body of ideas of the philosophical postmodern - Jean-Francois Lyotard, Jean Baudrillard und Paul Virilio - however reveals two particular contradictions which place a question mark against the pluralistic option of postmodern philosophy and hence against its claim to end the attempts at violent assimilation of the other together with the end of the age of totalization and to bring about a rehabilitation of the recognition of cultural differences. On the one hand the postmodern philosophical discourse does not comprise the evolution of a "positive barbarity" (Lyotard) but an anarchical lack of rules with negative connotations. On the other hand the idea of difference as the "ontological dignity" of the postmodern is in itself incoherent; it is rather the case that postmodern thought involves a fundamental process of de-differentiation. Because of these inherent contradictions in postmodern discourse postmodern theoreticians can contribute to the spread of precisely those ideas and that potential for violence whose disappearance they originally intended. Wherever today, in the age of a developing world inner space and of a multiplicity of intercultural contacts, attempts are made to propose the concept of postmodernity as a programme for the better acceptance of the cultural other and for the education of the various actors in a spirit of tolerance, these must be encountered with scepticism.

Arab, Arab-American, American: Hegemonic and Contrapuntal Representations / Araber, Araber-Amerikaner, Amerikaner: Dominante und alternative RepräsentationenFritsch-El Alaoui, Lalla Khadija 29 August 2005 (has links) (PDF)
Arab, Arab-American, American: Hegemonic and Contrapuntal Representations, explores the US mainstream discourse on the Arabs in the 1990s in different cultural texts: academic, popular and media, including Hollywood. The project investigates how these representational practices participate in the reconfiguration of American public opinion vis-à-vis the Arabs. It also focuses on the ways in which the various discourses that produce or even invent the "Other" are undeniably linked to the local and global power relations associated with their specific locations. Inspired by Edward Said's contrapuntal methodology, Gayatri Spivak's anti-essentialist postcolonial critique, and Ella Shohat and Robert Stam's polycentric multiculturalism, the book also makes space to examine counter-narratives and Arab perspectives. Arab, Arab-American, American´s analysis of the representation of Arabs in the US dominant media and Hollywood unravels the limits of liberalism and the "vestigial thinking" of Eurocentrism, at the heart of which demonizing or patronizing Arabs is still the norm. The book also offers a rigourous analysis of US foreign policy in the Arab world and addresses both the reality of imperialism in relation to its enablers, and the economic terrorism of neoliberalism in its various linkages with Islamic fundamentalism.

September 2001Wetzel, Jens 30 November 2006 (has links)
scheitert. Diese Problemstellung wird mit Hilfe
einer ausführlichen Analyse der europäischen
Antiterrorismusmaßnahmen seit dem 11. September
2001 aus menschenrechtlicher und
rechtsstaatlicher Sicht erörtert.

World Society on the CouchRoth, Steffen, Aderhold, Jens 24 June 2008 (has links)
This paper is about the re-establishment of a professional, that is, a neutral perspective on terror; most research on terrorism is partisan in terms of biased culturalist studies on the ‘index patients’ of an international conflict. At the same time, there is very little research on the forms and functions of so called anti-terror measures which are commonly treated as acts of self-defence. In contrast to this, from a sociological point of view we find that it takes two to make the terror: an act of violence, and an act of labelling this violence as terror, too. Thus, we argue that Western societies should take full responsibility for their own perceptions, attributions, and actions within an international conflict system, instead of continuing to externalize these. Finally, we state that sociology has a demand for research on the applicability of the concepts of systemic therapy on the field of the intervention into stable inter-cultural conflict systems.

Guantánamo has become a symbol for the clash of differing value systems. With widespread international concern and criticism of the treatment of the detainees - Islamic terror suspects - as grave violations of universal human rights. The dissertation illustrates the complex problems confronting international law by the aspects of international terrorism and especially the prison camp on Cuba. Furthermore, it examines the question, which rights beyond the international codifications are actually accepted within the cultures. The wording of the international human rights treaties and their dissemination assume a consensus on basic human rights. However differing and sometimes opposing cultural and religious conceptions exist. Some communities attach importance to a liberal and individual understanding, whilst others on the involvement and obligation of the individual into the community. Making it difficult to define and implement core human rights treaties, which can be applied universally regardless of cultural and religious beliefs. Therefore, the examination goes further than an analysis by means of international law. It discusses the question, which justifications of human rights are existing within the cultures, what the contents of the present paradigms of justification - to which also the international human rights refer - are, and how an inherence of a core of human rights can be derived beyond cultural relativity. Rights that would consider equal conditions of human interaction, and examine the correlation of identity, structural violence and the state of need of the human being. The actualization of the justification of human rights is vital in the legal discourse to assimilate the conceptions about the rights of man. Controversial human rights situations like Guantánamo can only be resolved and avoided in the future, with continued intercultural dialogue, understanding of a common human identity, and celebration instead of condemnation of the inherent richness of differing cultural and religious values.

The present work decribes the production and characterization of the first antibodies against triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a highly sensitive and improvised (non-commercial) primary explosive. Crucial to this work was the synthesis of a TATP-related hapten that mimics almost perfectly the typical nonagonal structure of TATP with its three peroxide and six methyl groups. Advantageously, it has an additional carboxylic acid group, which provides a conjugation site for covalent attachment to proteins. Thus, the TATP hapten could be linked to bovine serum albumin (BSA) to produce an immunogenic conjugate, allowing the successful immunization of two different mammalian species, mouse and rabbit. The in vivo immunization progress was followed by periodically analyzing the animals’ sera using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The polyclonal antibodies of both species were remarkably selective to TATP. The affinity of these TATP-antibodies was, however, different between the two species, with the rabbit sera showing an affinity about 5000-fold superior than the murine one. Consequently, the TATP detection limit of 0.01 µg/L was considerably better using the sera from rabbit in contrast to 50 µg/L when mouse serum was used. The working range of the TATP-ELISA with rabbit sera covers more than four decades, calculated from a precision profile. The obtained TATP antibodies from rabbit are now available for applications in highly sensitive detection systems for TATP, which could be employed, among others, in security-relevant areas. The first application was the realization of a TATP-ELISA, which was extensively optimized within the course of this work. Furthermore, the first steps towards the development of a lateral flow assay (LFA) targeting TATP were taken, making conceivable further biosensor platforms based on the newly developed TATP antibodies.
