"Wow, now I've at least done something that a parent is expected to do" : A study of Godnattsagor inifrån

Alzén, Sara January 2019 (has links)
This master's thesis examines how the social activity of the library with books and literature can strengthen the contact between imprisoned fathers and their children. The project Godnattsagor inifrån has been studied from three different perspectives, the library, criminal authorities and the prisoners with their children. Interviews were conducted with the different actors of the project. The perspective social constructivism and the concept literacy practice were used to analyze the interviews and the project. In the prison reading program Godnattsagor inifrån the fathers choose a story from a children’s storybook and read the text, the story is recorded on a CD and sent to the child on the outside. The project attempts to create or strengthen the bonds between fathers and children with help of reading experiences. The fathers take part in a study circle where they are introduced to the library activities and practice how to read out loud to their children. This also includes reading and appreciating literature for themselves. I have noticed that Godnattsagor inifrån can inspire children to be reading people. It has also been noticed that the project can have the same impact on the prisoner´s identity. The cooperation between the prison, the library and the families increase the possibilities for both the children and their fathers. My knowledge contribution is to show how important reading is and why. What happens to the individual when given the opportunity to read? This is a two years master´s thesis in Library and Information Science.

Mammabarnanstalt : Barn i fängelse - bra för barnet, bra för mamman, bra för samhället

Edwards Mannheimer, Rebecca January 2011 (has links)

A qualitative study on recidivists experiences of factors that lead to recidivism and reintegration into society after serving a prison sentence

Nilsson, Amanda, Larsson, Fanny January 2023 (has links)
High levels of recidivism and failed reintegrations after serving a prison sentence is asocial problem in today's society. The purpose of this study is to look into theexperiences of men who have served two or more prison sentences in order to identifywhich factors that lead to recidivism as well as which factors that lead to reintegrationinto the society. The presented study has a qualitative approach with a hermeneuticperspective and the empirical material has been collected through semi-structuredinterviews. The selection is goal-directed and consists 8 male recidivists where the timesince release date varies between the participants. The most prominent cause ofrecidivism appears to be addiction, especially for it leads to further criminal acts inorder to finance the addiction. Other factors are deficient family relations, abuse duringchildhood and antisocial behavior in forms of violence and criminality that degenerateat an early age. Negative experiences during prison sentences as well as insufficientsupport upon release also has an impact on the risk of recidivism. Regarding factors thatlead to reintegration after serving a prison sentence, it emerges that self-awareness andtaking responsibility seems to be highly important. Employment in forms of workcontributes to increased self-esteem as well as economic capital, which is crucial in apositive reintegration. A secure social network with family is another prominent factorthat reduces the risk of recidivism and supports integration back into society. The resultsof the study point to the fact that there are many different reasons for recidivism andthat one path to reintegration can look very different from another, which indicates thatthere is a need for individually tailored interventions to reduce the risk of recidivismand promote reintegration.

Does the criminal policy allow swedish prisons to work in accordance with their mission to decrease re-offending? : A content analysis study based on interviews with prison managers.

Jacobsson, Jennifer, Lindh, Maria January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this essay was to examine how the prevailing occupancy situation and criminal policy initiatives have affected the Swedish Probation Service, how the criminal policy relates to this authority’s most important goal of reducing re-offending, and how it can affect their future work. This through five semi-structured interviews with prison managers from different prisons, and the transcripts were analyzed through qualitative content analysis. The results was related to prior research, neo-institutional theory and the routine activity theory. Based on the prison managers’ perspective, the overall results showed that stricter legislation and increased resources for mainly the police has contributed to the Swedish Probation Service’s problematic occupancy situation. This because the pursued criminal policy made it easier to prosecute more people but the Swedish Probation Service was not given enough resources to handle these inmates. The authority therefore lacked the conditions to provide all inmates with necessary rehabilitation. The majority of the prison managers expressed concern that the Swedish Probation Service in the future will be characterized more by custody than rehabilitation, which most likely would increase - rather than decrease - the likelihood of re-offending.

To become or not to become a part of society? A study of career guidance in prison in the swedish treatment of offenders

Möller, Terese, Andersen, Ulla January 2010 (has links)
The purpose with this thesis is to identify how the study and vocational guidance situation looks like, in prison in the Swedish treatment of offenders, and make it visible how the study and vocational guidance can be developed to meet inmates’ guidance needs, within the area rehabilitation. An additional purpose of the work is to contribute with new knowledge as we don’t find any previous national research in the area.To investigate this, we have chosen a qualitative method, where we have inter-viewed some official staff and inmates. The result showed how the study and vocational guidance is organized in prison in the Swedish treatment of offenders. We found common purposes for study and vocational guidance, rehabilitation and the rehabilitation in the Swedish treatment of offenders. Study and vocational guidance is considered as a natural part of the rehabilitation in Swedish treatment of offenders. The result indicated that the existing study and vocational guidance doesn’t meet the inmates’ needs. In order to meet their needs, we have worked out a model that implies that study and vocational guidance in the Swedish treatment of offenders; have a central role among the other actors, who have contact with the inmates.

Anstaltens ambivalenta funktion : En studie av den samtida kriminalvårdsdiskursen / The ambivalence function of the correctional institution : A study of the contemporary correctional treatment discourse

Pettersson, Helena January 2005 (has links)
<p>Due to the attention of several escapes, rescue attempts and hostage situations from Swedish prisons during the year of 2004 a debate about correctional system and safety arose. It resulted in official reports and proposals to improve the safety of the institutions. The incidents of 2004 will most likely have an effect on the discourse of the correctional system. The purpose with this study is to analyse which discourses that today can be distinguished in the correctional system and thereby will be the foundation of the correctional systemof tomorrow. </p><p>The method used to answer the purpose of the study is a Foucauldian based discourse analysis. A perspective of socialconstructionism that leans upon the thought that it through language and text is possible to read processes of society and power. Power is a central idea in the study. By discerning the activated instruments of power in the Swedish correctional system it is possible to analyse the discourses made visible by these instruments of power. </p><p>Two different discourses may in the analysis be seen as the main influence in the work of correctional system. The liberalistic idea of empowerment is visible in the work against relapsing criminals, where focus is set on personal responsibility and the will of adjustment as a way of reentering society. New liberalistic ideas represent the second discourse where power works threw surveillance and control. In a risksociety we must protect ourselves from threats and dangers, which makes the prison a way of keeping the criminals distanced from society. </p><p>Classification is activated, to make the two discourses co-exist, as a way to create reliability around the work against relapsing criminals. By reproducing the norms and structure of our society we classify the level of digression and thereby punish as a way of handling it. To find a new way in to the debate about correctional system perhaps we need to ask ourselves: What function do we want the punishment to have?</p>

Bertilsson, John January 2010 (has links)
The essay deals with hierarchies that occurs between inmates in prison. It deals with a theory that these hierarchies, when seen through a gender perspective, can be understood as a hierarchy where you are valued based on traditional male characteristics. Empirically, the paper consists of interviews with five inmates, or former inmates, who during a period in his life, has served a prison sentence at a closed institution. Based on the informants' statements, conclusions are drawn about which properties are valued low in the hierarchy. This becomes clear when the informants speak humiliating about sexually deviant groups, snitches, or sex offenders. Those who are highly valued are those who have committed acts of violence and express a violent attitude, and other traditionally male characteristics. Hierarchy occurs much because of the frustration and powerlessness the inmates are experiencing and their need to dominate each other.

Det dubbla straffet : Mödrar på anstalt

Eklund, Magdalena, Hansson, Lisa January 2011 (has links)
In this study we meet women who gradually change our picture of the "double penalty", which complicates our view of a life of abuse and drug dependence, and the life in a women’s prison, but also simplifies the notion of the deep love they have for their children. Since these mothers have worked a lot with themselves and emerging from long periods of drug dependence, we have experienced the force which is released when someone is working with something she is passionate about. To help others and to allow the individual to accept help has guided this story about the human beings ability to get up and move on. The fact that the love seems to work side by side with the indebted problem has aroused our interest and is discussed in the text as a running theme. By allowing the individual emotions to meet sociological theories widens the perspective to an angle involving both macro- and micro-levels of society. This essay tries to explain the relationships as well as the incompatible roles and its impact on mothers in prison. Thomas J. Scheff's theory of social bonds is leading the discussion and is critical to understanding the need for consideration as well as the devastating impact of shame on the individual and society. Human diversity and multiple views of reality will find meaning in a social psychological interpretation and analysis originated from an innovative study.

Walleräng, Alexander January 2020 (has links)
Walleräng, A. (2020). Suicide prevention within the Swedish Prison and Probation service – Employees experiences of “Guidelines for suicide prevention”. Bachelor thesis in Public Health Science. Department of Public Health and Sport Science. University of Gävle, Sweden.   A qualitative interview study with people working in the Swedish Prison and Probation service was conducted to explore their experiences of “Guidelines for suicide prevention”. As a starting point were the guidelines used within prisons and the probation service. Semi-structured interviews, where the respondents were allowed to reflect over its content and how they used it in their daily work, were used together with an interview guide. The data was then analysed through content analysis and later categorised. The result was divided into two domains; the individual and the organisation. Each category was described in the result. The main finding was that the responders described the guidelines as a good support in their work. Although they also reported a lack of clear descriptions of how the cooperation between the Prison and Probation service and external psychiatry was to be conducted. Guidelines were mostly directed inwards. In conclusion, the guidelines are produced to simplify the suicide preventive work. The importance of staff presence and personal engagement are key factors to successfully reduce suicides and self-harm.   Key words: Suicide prevention, prison, guidelines, experiences, interview study.
