07 December 2007 (has links)
This study focuses on the relation between the picareque genre and the way in which guilt is processed in literature. André Brink’s Inteendeel (On the contrary) was used in this examination and also, for a wider perspective than merely the South African situation, Arthur Japin’s De zwarte met het witte hart (The two hearts of Aquasi Boachi). The possibilities offerd by the picaresque in order to investigate the manifestation of guilt in literary texts were explored with the theories of, inter alia, Wicks, Ricoeur and Todorov. Tracing the origins of the picaresque reveals that this type of text exhibits specific characteristics, e.g. an unethical attitude that is usually imposed on the individual by a society in crisis – “guilt” and a confessional tone are therefore intrinsically part of the picaresque. Using Wicks’s modal-generic approach, the two novels are examined with the purpose of determining their degree of “picaresqueness” to test the validity of the hypothesis, i.e. that the more a text displays picaresque characteristics, the more the issue of guilt would be a central theme to that text. In the two novels relevant to this study, colonial guilt is the main form of guilt examined. / Prof. W. Burger

True un-veilings or pure fiction? An analysis of four autobiographies from a postcolonial perspective.

Folkesson, Kristina, Lundberg, Anna January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this Master’s thesis is to investigate the descriptions of characters and settings in four autobiographies. The main question is: What picture of women and men, of the West and the Orient do these books provide? To answer this question we have formed three sub questions, which are: In what ways are main and minor characters described? In what ways are the key settings, and the Western and Oriental societies described? Which themes are dealt with, and from what points of departure? The theoretical framework is based on a postcolonial theoretical perspective, where the concept of binary opposites and Edward W. Said’s ideas about orientalism are crucial. The method used is a textual analysis. To analyze the material, a number of analysis questions were designed with the main question, and its sub questions, as a basis. The result shows that descriptions of characters and settings have dramaturgic functions of forming a background to the story. Accordingly, the same features may be described in either negative or positive terms, due to what aspect of the story the book currently deals with. The conclusion suggests that colonial stereotypes are evident today in popular literature, such as these autobiographies, in fact, they are even stronger than they used to be.

Isabelle, Sandborg January 2019 (has links)

Vad betyder min novell? : Författaren tolkar sin okända text

Svensson, Morgan January 2010 (has links)

All my short stories have been written in an intuitive way according to which no outline of characters, intrigue or plot was made in advance. A consequence of this process is that not even myself as the author is aware of the meaning of the texts and therefore I too have to interpret the stories. Because of the character of the text, I use an analysis of archetypes according to C. G. Jung’s analytic psychology. In addition to this I also use concepts from hermeneutical and existential phenomenology, represented here by Viktor Frankl, Emmanuel Lévinas, Martin Heidegger and Paul Ricoeur. The Jungian analysis shows that the content in the short story Sjön (The lake) in a high degree is structured in a way that correlates very well with this method. When it comes to the phenomenological thinkers, several of their concepts are applicable in my short story. In the philosophy of Frankl and Heidegger, the concept of conscience is a warning to the individual to take care of his life, which is a possible interpretation of the anxiety of my main character. When it comes to his seeking for the significance of an important earlier event in his life the concept of memory in the discourse of Ricoeur also bring some light to the understanding. Finally, the concept of the Other in Lévinas´ philosophy can explain his longing for a reestablishing of a meaning in his life.

Hadjipetri, Sofia January 2007 (has links)

På jakt efter en identitet : Identitetsskapande i samband med backpackingresor / In search of an identity : Identity formation in the context of backpacking journeys

Gottfridsson, Sofie, Holmström, Sara January 2013 (has links)
The dream of traveling abroad and to discover different countries and cultures are becoming more common and is made possible with cheaper airline tickets. Backpacking has tended to increase during the last decades and has come to symbolise a new social phenomenon in Sweden. This paper concerns the phenomenon of backpacking and how backpacking is significant for the creation of an identity of the individual. The purpose of this paper is to examine whether a backpacking journey corresponds to an inner journey of the individual. Backpacking has already been explored in other disciplines and this paper wishes to contribute to existing research with a social psychological perspective. The selected theories are based on a symbolic interactionist perspective, which include Mead's theories about the interplay between the individual and society in social action and Giddens' theories of identity formation in the global community. The empirical data consists of eight interviews with young Swedish backpackers. The result of the study show that the informant’s identities changed during and after their trip and that they completed their journey at defining moments of their lives. The result also highlights that the journey can be used in order to create a story about the self and also that some of the informants may use their journey as a status marker to their surroundings. v

Yttergren, Matilda, Gustavsson, Angelica January 2010 (has links)
Abstract We decided to explore former school pupils’ experiences of not conforming to the norm. Earlier studies have focused on the children as “the problem”. We see this as worrying, especially since there is very little research focusing on the pupils’ own experiences. The children’s own perspective needs to be brought to the fore. We hope in a small way to contribute to this. Our study consists of retrospective qualitative interviews with former school children, now all over the age of eighteen. We have adopted a social constructionist perspective to illuminate the area. Social constructionism can be seen as a meta-theory underlying the choice of method, theory and research questions in our study. The study is qualitative and consists of five semi-structured interviews. As a theoretical and analytical tool we will construct a discourse using a psychological perspective. We will base this on the work of Potter and Wetherell as well as Winther Jörgensen and Phillips’s discourse theories. Our qualitative approach means we will look at the role of speech production based on interpretation repertoires and subject positions. In this way, we can see how meanings form the building blocks used in the way people talk about, and thereby construct, the world of everyday interaction (Winther Jorgensen & Phillips 2000: 116). In other words the discourses are a social act, a discursive practice. We are interested in analysing how the interviewees construct versions of social reality in their stories in relation to current social norms and discourses. In addition to discursive psychological theory we have used Börjesson & Palmblad’s descriptions of the impact of verbal discourse about pupils at school on a macro level. They found that the pupils had been categorised as “deviant” and “problem children” during their time at school, also that there was an image of how the “desirable child” should be. We also applied Beckers’ theory of using the “outsider” in order to understand the mechanisms behind the position of not fitting into the norm. Utilising these theories we analysed the five interviewees’ description of themselves, others and their situation at school to illuminate their experiences and also to highlight their description of the experience of being viewed as “deviant” during their school period. Key words: Identity, Normality, School Norm, Outsider, Discourse psychology, Social constructionism
