Automated brick sculpture construction

Smal, Eugene 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MSc (Mathematical Sciences))--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / In this thesis we consider the modelling of a particular layout optimisation problem, namely, the LEGO construction problem. The LEGO construction problem, in short, concerns the optimal layout of a set of LEGO bricks to represent a given object. Our goal is to develop a software package which LEGO enthusiasts can use to construct LEGO sculptures for any real-world object. We therefore not only consider the layout optimisation problem, but also the generation of the input data required by the LEGO construction problem. We show that by using 3D geometric models to represent the real-world object, our implemented voxelisation technique delivers accurate input data for the LEGO construction problem. The LEGO construction problem has previously been solved with optimisation techniques based on simulated annealing, evolutionary algorithms, and a beam search approach. These techniques all indicate that it is possible to generate LEGO building instructions for real-world objects, albeit not necessarily in reasonable time. We show that the LEGO construction problem can be modelled easily with cellular automata, provided that cells are considered as clusters which can merge or split during each time step of the evolution of the cellular automaton. We show that the use of cellular automata gives comparable layout results in general, and improves the results in many respects. The cellular automata method requires substantially less memory and generally uses fewer LEGO bricks to construct the LEGO sculpture when using comparable execution times.

Effects of relationship context and social factors on women's solo masturbaton and vibrator use

Sherrow, Ashley Reneé 08 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Little existing research has examined women’s solo masturbation and vibrator usage in a way that highlights the importance of both sexual agency and the sexual/romantic relationship context. This research evaluates if and how social factors, partnership status and the relationship context, and sexual self-concept impact a woman’s behaviors and attitudes toward masturbation and vibrator use. Using cross-sectional survey data from adult women (N=112), descriptive and bivariate analyses were used to explore a variety of factors. Single and partnered women did not differ significantly on a majority of measures, suggesting that partnership status may play an insignificant role in predicting women’s solo sex attitudes and behaviors. Regarding the relationship context, partner communication and positivity toward masturbation and vibrator use significantly varied together. Finally, greater sexual openness and sexual entitlement were associated with higher masturbation frequency. Results from this study suggest that masturbation and vibrator use are common among adult women, and women are capable of sexual agency in relation to masturbation and vibrator use, whether they are in established partnerships or not.

[pt] MINIATURA, MINIATURIZAÇÃO: DISPOSITIVOS DE PENSAMENTO E DE CRIAÇÃO ARTÍSTICA, A PARTIR DE WALTER BENJAMIN / [fr] MINIATURE, MINIATURISATION: DISPOSITIFS DE PENSÉE ET DE CRÉATION ARTISTIQUE, À PARTIR DE WALTER BENJAMIN / [en] MINIATURE, MINIATURIZATION: ARTISTIC PRODUCTION AND THOUGHT MECHANISMS IN WALTER BENJAMIN

FRANCISCO THIAGO CAMELO DA SILVA 02 July 2021 (has links)
[en] This thesis explores Walter Benjamin s work and, more specifically, his ideas for a commentary on miniaturization (Verkleinerung) that would be inspired by Goethe s The New Melusine (Die neue Melusine), to elaborate a theoretical perspective that envisions the process of miniaturization and the miniature itself as creative apparatuses for artistic and literary practices. This study also investigates Benjamin as a collector, focusing on his collection of small objects -such as miniatures, old toys, snow globes, children s books, stamps, and postal cards- and his interest on the topic of childhood, which emerged during his time in exile. This later interest would also allow the Jewish-German writer to develop not only the key concepts of monad, collection, and technique, but also the imagery that would become crucial to his work -namely, the child, the collector, and the ragman. This constellation of concepts and imagery will act as a methodological device in this thesis, which understands the miniaturization process as a reproduction technique and the miniature as an aesthetic form that is itself connected to the notion of childhood. By adopting the format of a journal composed of notations and critical comments that position both the miniaturization process and the miniature as creative apparatuses for literature and the arts, this study also investigates not only literary writings that adopt the idea of the miniature as a symbol, but the works of artists that touch on the topic of miniaturization as well.

En bristning i kvinnors sexuella frihet : en kvalitativ pilotstudie kring hur förlossningsbristningar kan påverka kvinnors sexuella hälsa / A tear in women's sexual freedom

Backlund, Maria, Olsson, Emma January 2023 (has links)
Sexual health and sexuality are central factors in a woman's life world. Historically, the image of women's sexuality has been covered with various taboos, which are still reflected in society today. Perineal tears can lead to physical and psychological consequences that can affect a woman's sexual health. The midwife can help the woman to a better sexual health by having good knowledge about perineal tears. Support and information as well before as after childbirth can help increase the Sense of Coherence, SOC, and promote sexual health. Caritative care can contribute to alleviate suffering and use the suffering to generate motivation for change. Perineal tears can affect a woman's sexual health and thus her life world. The purpose of the study was to describe women's experiences of how their sexual health has been affected after they suffered from perineal tears. The study was conducted as a qualitative interview study with an inductive approach where 10 women were interviewed. The results show that perineal tears caused a limitation to women’s sexual freedom. Women experienced a deterioration in sexual health, but sometimes also an improvement when new aspects of sexual life emerge. However, the women felt restricted regardless of whether their sexual health had improved. Feelings of being broken, dirty and having affected self-confidence, affected relationships and/or difficulties meeting someone new emerged. Physiotherapy, clear information from healthcare and exploring new ways of exercising sexuality, for example with the help of sex toys and non-penetrative sex, promoted sexual health. Feelings of shame and nonchalant treatment from healthcare professionals as well as a lack of information were perceived as limiting. There is a need for greater openness in talking about sexuality in healthcare as well as a better coordinated chain of care in combination with improved information and follow-up. Sexual aids such as sex toys need to be lifted and implemented in care. Midwife-led training of various professional categories in talking about sexual health can be of great benefit.

Barns maktpositioneringar i den fria leken : En kvalitativstudie i hur barn använder makt, motstånd och normer i den fria leken inomhus. / Childrens power positioning in free play : A qualitative studie in how children uses power, resistance and norms in the free play inside.

Lindh, Emelie, Karlsson, Beatrice January 2024 (has links)

Global Discontents

Khatri, Priyadarshini A 01 January 2005 (has links)
My creative project explores toys as means to express economic issues of globalization. By exploiting the educational and imaginative aspects of toys for adults and children, I intend to reflect on the impact and pressures of globalization on employment, technology and environment. In creating these toys I hope to make a visual statement concerning critical issues of human survival, sustainability and the divisive side of globalization.

Ties That Bind

Orlowski, Jessica Marie 23 March 2010 (has links)
I am fascinated by the inner thoughts, the memories, and the cumulative experience that make us each a complex physiological puzzle. From birth, sociological building blocks are constructed forming emotional walls and unexpected doorways, boundaries and comfortable passageways through the architecture of our personalities. My thesis work, which is comprised of ceramic figures and interactive toys, offers playful memory triggers and evocative spaces in which viewers can deconstruct the building blocks of their social persona.

Lycklig är den, vars arbete är en lek : Att skapa lust och undvika lustfällor i musiklekandet med förskolebarn / Happy is the one whose work is play : To create desire and avoid traps in musical play making whith preschoolers

Fagerberg, Kerstin January 2015 (has links)
Using this scientific essay, I examine how to recognize and protect the play and the joy of music-making with preschoolers. I highlight this not only from the children's, but also from my own and my colleagues, perspective. With the help of stories from my everyday life at preschool and based on my practical knowledge, I provide a picture of how this may emerge. These stories are the foundation for my further reflections. I scrutinize what play and playfulness are and carefully analyze the phenomenon into smaller parts. I reflect about, among other things, the preparation, atmosphere, materials, assessing rules, the support of individual children, ability to stay open, teamwork, the risk of verbosity and the necessity of humor. The voice that primarily has it's say belongs to Johan Huizinga. His ideas regarding the essence of play has helped me formulate my own thoughts. Others has also helped me to clarify, deepen, and contrast my own reasoning in this essay.
