“It’s been difficult to love, when all love has led to disappointment” : – A study about love and gender representation in Håkan Hellström’s and Veronica Maggio’s lyrics.

Lysfoss Gunnerfeldt, Isak January 2015 (has links)
This is an essay about love and gender representation in Håkan Hellström’s and Veronica Maggio’s lyrics. The purpose of this essay is to investigate how lyrics of indie-pop music represent gender, sexuality and love. The lyrics used is from love songs performed by Håkan Hellström and Veronica Maggio. The method for examining the lyrics of the love songs is discourse- theory and analysis. I analyzed the results using theories about performativity, heteronormativity and masculine hegemonyic masculinity. I found patterns which indicate that love songs in indie-pop music often represents an ideal relationship to be heteronomy, meaning a heterosexual and monogamous relationship between a man and a woman. Although, there were differences between how a masculinity was built; Hellström’s discourse built a masculinity that was fragile and vulnerable, but still loving and showing a lot of emotions. Maggios discourse built a masculinity that were more or less mirroring the society’s view of how a “man” is supposed to be. Also, the view of femininity differed from the two artists: Hellström’s discourse built a femininity of strong and controlling women, and Maggio’s built a more fragile and normative discourse about femininity. Another theme that was discovered was of all the disappointment that was found in love. Indie-pop’s love is always built around disappointment in the relationship – that you will always be disappointed either by yourself or by your partner.

Sánchez Flores, Miguel Antonio 13 February 2017 (has links)
Tesis

Poluentes Orgânicos Persistentes em sangue de aves marinhas no Arquipélago de São Pedro e São Paulo e na Ilha da Trindade / Persistent Organic Pollutants in blood of seabirds in the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago and Trindade Island

Silva, Daniela Alves Maia da 08 March 2019 (has links)
Seabirds are sensitive to changes at all trophic levels, due to variations in prey availability and contamination by some compounds, which can be accumulated in the tissues of organisms and to be magnified through the trophic chain. The Brazilian oceanic islands harbor important seabird breeding colonies and, although they are considered remote sites, they are subject to contamination from human activities. This work evaluated the presence of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in blood, a non-destructive matrix, of six species of seabirds in the São Pedro and São Paulo Archipelago (SPSPA) and Trindade Island (TI), that allows the monitoring of these individuals over the years. The results indicated that the major POPs detected in blood (ng g-1 in wet weight) were PCBs (0.05 to 55.09), DDTs (0.01 to 17.36) and Mirex (0.01 to 5,53). Migration influenced the high levels of POPs found in Pterodroma arminjoniana and the mean mass (g) of the individuals drove a strong negative correlation with the concentrations of the predominant compounds in the blood. The gender of the individuals did not contribute significantly to the concentrations of POPs in monotypic species, except for the species Sula leucogaster that presents marked sexual dimorphism. The feeding behavior was evaluated through the analysis of stable isotopes of carbon and nitrogen (δ13C and δ15N) as well as the biological conditions of each animal contributed to explain the variations in the contamination profiles between the different species. In general, we observed that POPS concentrations at both sites presented low and similar values suggesting the atmospheric transport as the main input mechanism of these compounds for these regions. The unpublished results of POPs, in blood of seabirds from the two most recent marine conservation units created in Brazil, can contribute as reference values for their long-term monitoring in those regions.

I present a theoretical review about this phenomenon which originates from social inequality, generated by the exploitation of the working classes in the capitalist system, representing one of the most tragic manifestations of the social question. These are men and women who live in a situation of extreme poverty, without work and regular housing, who inhabit public spaces, streets and squares of the city, surviving as beggers or by conducting informal services, such as looking after parked cars, collecting recyclable materials and similar activities. This study examines the trajectory of the construction of a national policy for inclusion of people living in a street situation, particularly in Brazil, and specifically in Pelotas. A study was conducted in this municipality with the users of the Specialized Reference Center for Social Assistance for the Street Population (CREAS-pop), to trace the characterization of these subjects and analyze the implementation of the service, according to the manifestations of the participants in the study. To conduct the study, scientific research was conducted with a qualitative approach, within a dialectical-critical focus, which included a study of documents, observation and a focus group to respond to the following key question: what is the meaning of the implantation of the CREAS POP Pelotas to meet the needs and expectations of its users? The data collection to characterize the profile of users allowed, in addition to the preparation of reference statistics, unveiling the reality of a population group, which - despite life s adversities and the difficulties of a system that denies them their most essential rights - continue to dream of better days, with a complete life, and hope that the service will help improve their reality. It found that the work undertaken by CREAS POP Pelotas is participating in efforts to implement a national policy for people in a street situation, which still functions in a very limited manner. The institution is involved in the construction of a model of care for these people, to guarantee their rights, particularly the right to access social policies. The statements of the users include visceral expressions of the anguish of people who survive in inhuman conditions amid the daily life of the city, and coexist with others, living exposed to the elements, with hunger, without income, abandoned, suffering all kinds of violence, while basically invisible to society. Nevertheless, they declare that they have hope that the service can provide the force that they are lacking to change their lives, that they feel safe at the shelter, that they get together to discuss their problems and say that once again their voices are being heard / Este trabalho versa sobre a População em Situação de Rua, fenômeno sócio histórico que vêm ganhando visibilidade em face do crescimento alarmante de pessoas que se encontram na miséria absoluta, vivendo nas ruas e praças das cidades, com direitos fundamentais violados e sem acesso aos serviços públicos a que tem direito.

Relations and interactions between the music created in the music industry dynamics and the culture of the image, as well as with the expansion of the registers and documents of process of music, from the eletronic record to the video, are established. Pop music refers to that of the Culture Industry, of media insertion, especially mass media, such as the radio, the cinema and the television, and their production is seen as a wide creative network. The documentary Let it Be, by the British group The Beatles, filmed in 1969 and released in 1970, was chosen as case study and, from the processes critique approach and based on the theories of the work of art creative networks, by Cecília Almeida Salles, it is understood as register and index of the collective process of creation of the band. The movie is considered, from this perspective, a precursor of the audiovisual format known today as the making of and, based on their critical analysis, different moments and points of tension are recognised during the creation and recording of an album, nods of the pop music network. We seek to understand how the interactions among their members, the creative subjects, as well as with external factors to that specific process, characterized the collective process of creation of the group at that stage of their career / A seguinte dissertação pretende investigar o processo de criação da música pop a partir do estudo do formato audiovisual como registro de processo de criação musical, em particular, o gênero cinematográfico documentário e o formato audiovisual making of. Organiseringsprocesser i ett popband : bakom kulisser och mellan människor / Processes of organizing in a pop band

Malm, Tobias January 2015 (has links)
There is a gap between thought and action in smaller organizations. Unawareness of its own activities has led to misleading explanations for both successful and unsuccessful organizing. This study therefore aims to develop knowledge and understanding of processes of organizing in smaller organizations and specifically in pop bands. The research design is a longitudinal case study of a pop band. The methodology was inspired by ethnography and has an abductive approach. The main source for data collection has been observation of chatting, however direct observations, interviews and a meeting of stimulated recall has also been conducted. The results show how the pop band is organized in projects and the importance of complexity and the collective sense that it can make. Analysis is based on Czarniawska's theory of organizing and Weick's theory of sensemaking. It is concluded that sustained and coherent processes of organizing are associated with processes of collective sensemaking. An endeavor for collective sense is an endeavor to realize the organization as a collective. The implications for well-functioning activities in smaller organizations proposed to be to endeavor for complexity by involving the most sensible projects according to all participants into one another, and to schedule meetings and to have multiple deadlines, and avoid authoritarian leadership, avoid competing buddy collective, avoid delegation and allocation of areas of responsibility and avoid the pursuit of a common view.

History, culture and identity in the novels of Bapsi Sidhwa, Bharati Mukherjee and Hanif Kureishi / Historique, culture et identité dans les romans de Bapsi Sidhwa, Bharati Mukherjee et Hanif Kureishi

Khan, Shoukat Yaseen 28 June 2017 (has links)
The objective of this thesis is to study three novels written by English-speaking authors of Pakistan or India, namely Bapsi Sidhwa, Bharati Mukherjee and Hanif Kureishi. One might be tempted to place the three writers of this study in the category of "literature of immigrants." They all write at a time of mass migration when the idea of "cultural shock" among Western peoples begins to be more evident. All three writers are affected by themes which appear only marginally in the debate evoked above, much of the emphasis being on the cultural and social difficulties of women in Indo-Pakistani society. As for Kureishi, the polarization mentioned above assumes a very different emphasis, involving the situation of an Asian born and brought up inside Western society. Within this overall assessment of the ideological and historical context common to all three writers, it will thus be important to examine the specific attitudes adopted by each writer in relation to his or her own personal experience. The main focus of this study will therefore be thematic, centering on these writers’ specific preoccupations and the way this is seen in their peculiar depiction of the tensions at stake.

Comparison of Multiple Models for Diabetes Using Model Averaging

Al-Mashat, Alex January 2021 (has links)
Pharmacometrics is widely used in drug development. Models are developed to describe pharmacological measurements with data gathered from a clinical trial. The information can then be applied to, for instance, safely establish dose-response relationships of a substance. Glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) is a common biomarker used by models within antihyperglycemic drug development, as it reflects the average plasma glucose level over the previous 8-12 weeks. There are five different nonlinear mixed-effects models that describes HbA1c-formation. They use different biomarkers such as mean plasma glucose (MPG), fasting plasma glucose (FPG), fasting plasma insulin (FPI) or a combination of those. The aim of this study was to compare their performances on a population and an individual level using model averaging (MA) and to explore if reduced trial durations and different treatment could affect the outcome. Multiple weighting methods were applied to the MA workflow, such as the Akaike information criterion (AIC), cross-validation (CV) and a bootstrap model averaging method. Results show that in general, models that use MPG to describe HbA1c-formation on a population level could potentially outperform models using other biomarkers, however, models have shown similar performance on individual level. Further studies on the relationship between biomarkers and model performances must be conducted, since it could potentially lay the ground for better individual HbA1c-predictions. It can then be applied in antihyperglycemic drug development and to possibly reduce sample sizes in a clinical trial. With this project, we have illustrated how to perform MA on the aforementioned models, using different biomarkers as well as the difference between model weights on a population and individual level.
