We take as the theoretical background archeology and genealogy formulated by Michel Foucault to understand the theoretical categories: discourse, power / knowledge / truth, sexuality / homosexuality and standardization. We adopted qualitative approach to analyze the corpus that was videos posted on YouTube containing pronouncement, debate, lecture and preaching of six political and religious leaders opposed to the policies of human rights aimed at the LGBT group. The definition of participants number followed the data saturation criterion proposed by Minayo (2010). To analyze the discourses we used the DA (Gregolin, 2004), whose analysis proposal was outlined by Foucault and is based on the following categories: Who speaks? Where does it speak from? What effect of meaning does it produce? Which discourses appear (statements, contradictions, repetitions, regularities and dispersions)? What great event do the discourses emerge from? The data indicate that the discursive practices of religious and political leaders materialize in aversion, rejection and exclusion discourse. They also emerge discourses that relate to LGBT with deprived people of character, promiscuous, pedophiles and threatening the social order. In view of these leaders, human rights policies should not include LGBT group. The subjects are crossed by discourses of imprint moral, religious and pseudo-scientific that support the heteronormativity. Homophobia is institutionally legitimized if we consider the place where these subjects speak.

This thesis was developed in the Post-Graduate Program in Science Education (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação em Ciências: química da vida e saúde), in the research line "Scientific Education: implications of scientific practices in the constitution of subjects", in order to investigate the discourses and practices of self that constitute gay, transvestite and transsexual subjects in educational spaces. The study was produced based on the foucaultian theoretical assumptions and Queer theory. The corpus of analysis consisted of narratives produced by gays, transvestites and transsexuals from Rio Grande/RS, with the link between the Thematic Oral History methodology and Participant Observation. For the analytical process, some tools from the Discourse Analysis proposed by Michel Foucault were used. While analyzing the enunciations, we highlighted the emergence of discourses and statements which were problematized in the articles that compose this thesis. Among these, we listed the statement 'the constitution of homosexuality’, which was problematized based on three enunciative scenes: the search for an explanation and/or genesis for homosexuality, the desire as constituent of homosexual subjectivity, and gender issues and their associations with homosexuality. The discourse of heteronormativity was emphasized with enunciations that show how some educational spaces question subjects and effect on their subjectivities. At the same time that they constitute themselves as educational spaces, they seek to lead lives of individuals based on their government strategies. The other analyzed statement was ‘the production of the body and self-(re)invention, which was problematized with the narratives from transvestites and transsexuals on their body fabrication and the production of femininity. The network of produced enunciations allowed us to understand how the subjects who participated in this study are constituted and what are the practices of self and the strategies of self-production involved in the production process of their subjectivities. We highlighted the school and the universitie as institutions in which control and surveillance govern its organization and structure. Also, we problematized the need for articulation between the discussion of the themes of the sexual and gender multiplicities to political-pedagogical projects of educational institutions, seeking to deconstruct some "truths" produced on lesbian, gay, bisexual, transvestite and transsexual subjectivities which, somehow, collaborate for the production of inequality and homophobia. The heteronormativity is expressed and reinforced in different social environments, in gender and sexual controlling norms, reproducing exclusionary and discriminatory practices, given that such norms affect the denial and invisibility of certain subjectivities. From techniques of the self, transsexuals and transvestites bring up different subject positions, challenging, in many cases, the heteronormativity.

I sought in this dissertation to understand the doing and undoing of the gender of drag queens from Belo Horizonte, using especially the works of Judith Butler (2003, 1993, 1997, 2004). The theory was structured discussing: the gender in a non-essentialist view, considering it as a doing and not a property of the subject, the criticis of the gender binary and questioning the transgender issue without intending to exhaust it given its complexity; doing and undoing the gender supporting me especially in Judith Butler, organizational and social sciences authors; (hetero) norm and the (dis) identification appropriating Butler's reflections on the subject related directly to social norms, given that the identifications are never complete, allowing differentiations and subversions; the performativity, parody and gender performance, differentiating them and recognizing the performativity imbricated with the reiteration of the discursive norms; a brief introduction to the world of drags especially focusing on Brazilian studies. Thus, I realized a qualitative research, with a poststructuralist epistemology through biographical narratives of ten drag queens, with inspiration in critical discourse analysis of Fairclough (2003, 2008). The analysis was designed from the work and concepts of Judith Butler and has the following categories: Performances that contains sub-categories: on performances, productions and caches, performances with the "straight" and "LGBTIQ" public, performances and feelings, and humor; The relationship among drags: family, "friends", "colleagues" and power games; Seeking recognition for x drag queen; Humor; (Dis) Identifications; Doing and undoing gender. Finally, considerations lead the complexity and ambivalence of this theme in the identifications, the doings, undoings and the contingentiality of the gender. Also thinking about the possibility of a direct relationship with critical organizational studies, having seen that the heteronormative matrix inhabits the administration, but does not prevent us to create rivals matrices.

Erbenius, Theo January 2015 (has links)
The subject of this bachelor thesis is the logics and counter-logics that have structured the perception of transsexualism and the now abolished sterilization requirement for legal recognition of sex change within the Swedish legal system and governmental authority. The analyzed material consists of judgments from two court cases with opposing verdicts that took place in 2004-2005 and 2012. The main conflict in the first court case was about if the sterilization requirement entailed the destruction of frozen germ cells or not. In the second court case the antagonism was mainly about if the sterilization requirement itself was legitimate or not. The differentiation in the verdicts and the expressed logics between the court cases was through analyze linked to discursive displacements in media coverage and judicial descriptions of transsexuals and their legal rights.

Devenir ‘expat’. Pratiques de l’espace du quotidien de femmes en situation de mobilité internationale à Luxembourg / To (be)come an ‘expat’ : women’s everyday practices of space during international mobility in Luxembourg

Duplan, Karine 13 May 2016 (has links)
Positioned in both critical mobility and migration studies, and studies on gender and sexualities, this PhD dissertation in political and cultural geography aims at unveiling the hidden double face of expatriation. For one part, it focuses on women’s daily practices during their international mobility cycle. It thus examines how these translocal practices fit within a multiscale mobility lifestyle. For another part, it places the body as the primary space of the analysis through the concept of performance. It shows of expatriate women play out specific sexual and gender norms and roles that contribute to the (re)production of a localised transnational space. This research seeks to reveal expatriation as a distinctive mobility practice, weaving from gender coercion to emancipation, which contributes to the reproduction and the spread of heteronormativity in a context of growing globalisation. It is settled in Luxembourg, which can be characterised as an emerging metropolitan capital, where the subjective experience of globalisation can be felt. Methodologically speaking, this thesis is based on in-depth reflexive ethnographic researches, combining participant observations and semi-structured interviews, in articulation with a statistical analysis and a large panorama of Luxembourg's expatriate places and institutions.

'That was yesterday, this is today' : Challenging the heteronormative dominant discourse by incorporating Jeanette Winterson's novel 'Written on the Body' in the EFL classroom

Modén, Sara January 2018 (has links)
Winterson’s Written on the Body is an experimental and provocative novel that challenges the reader’s mindset as well as society’s heteronormativity by implicitly questioning societal norms and fundamental values. With an unusual protagonist as a point of departure, upper secondary school students in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classroom can discuss important political and social issues and giving them the chance to become more open-minded and inclusive towards all people regardless of one’s sex, gender, and, or sexuality. This essay shows that Written on the Body with its unusual, queer protagonist challenges the heteronormativity in modern Western societies and instead of solely focusing on students’ language development during their English education, they are invited to interrupt and question set attitudes, behaviours, and traditions in modern Western societies.

Kaapista kaanoniin ja takaisin:Johanna Sinisalon, Pirkko Saision ja Helena Sinervon teosten queer-poliittisia luentoja

Karkulehto, S. (Sanna) 10 October 2007 (has links)
Abstract The present study examines three novels by Finnish women – Johanna Sinisalo, Pirkko Saisio and Helena Sinervo – each of whom has received the Finlandia Prize for fiction. The novels Ennen päivänlaskua ei voi (2000), Punainen erokirja (2003) and Runoilijan talossa (2004) are analysed in the context of contemporary cultural change in which queer themes have become not only a visible part of cultural representations of gender and sexuality but also active constituents of the established cultural canon. The study considers the varieties of gendered and sexual meaning which are generated by this fiction and – as the novels in question deal with non-normative sexuality – it also discusses how these issues were manifested in their reception. Additionally, it investigates the problematics of a literary genre which thematises non-normative sexuality. Beyond its engagement with the interrelationship between the selected novels (along with their social context) and the present culture, institutions and canon, the study also concerns itself with the question of how non-normative sexuality is addressed and discussed in literature and its reception. The novels are examined as products of a context in which their publication had seemed like a swift, yet appropriate, response to a cultural need for the creation of new, 'liberal' and 'progressive' queer representations. In addition, they are approached as works with specific queer-political agendas, aimed at opposing and deranging the hetero establishment. The analysis of the novels is consequently grounded in the politics of performativity, queer theory and the problematics of its domestic contextualisation, taking account, too, of the intersection between performativity and queer reading. This methodology is called queer political reading. The novels under investigation participate in the cultural, societal, social and discursive processes that use gender and sexuality to construct meaning. The fact that they have also received the Finlandia Prize connects them to a wider context, into a contemporary culture and society, which places sexuality at its centre. Where wide and far-reaching gender issues, brought about by cultural, intellectual, judicial and political changes, marked the turn of the 20th century, the turn of the present century is more explicitly sexual in character, facilitated by contemporary phenomena – such as the epochal changes in theories of gender and sexuality, or legislation and presentations of sexual culture, which have manifested themselves over recent years. Nevertheless, it would seem that discussions of queerness tend to remain allusive and implied rather than explicit, taking not only peculiar but also traditional forms, in which the rhetoric of the closet is used extensively. On the one hand, queerness is quite visible in representations of sexuality. But on the other hand, the reception of that queerness remains largely in the closet. This suggests that – particularly on institutional levels – queer themes can be rendered explicit only when it remains contextually suitable.

: A semiotic content analysis of homosexuality and queer in five animated American mainstream feature films

Voldberg, Jakob, Zontho, Erica January 2018 (has links)
Historically, films from the mainstream American animation companies have had an almost non-existent representation of homosexual characters. Previously, it has been proven that the heteronormative has had a strong dominance in these companies. Considering the companies constantly produce new films, we aim to explore if this is still accurate. Within this context, this research offers an updated perspective on current representation by analyzing five animated feature films: Zootopia (2016), ParaNorman (2012), Storks (2016), Finding Dory (2016) and Frozen (2013). We have, with semiotics as a foundation, conducted a qualitative inductive content analysis of these films. By diverging from the heteronormative perspective which is deeply rooted in society we have viewed these films with a different approach. This research shows that the inclusion of homosexual couples and queer characters in animated films has increased. However, despite this increase the characters remain in small roles which are only included for a short time. This shows that the heteronormative still dominates in American mainstream animation. The clues which are given about the characters’ sexuality are subtle, resulting in them being easily overlooked.

Language, Heteronormativity and Gender in EFL Teaching : Inclusion of Non-heteronormative Identities in Swedish EFL Materials and Classroom Practices

Leinonen, Emma January 2020 (has links)
The past few decades have seen a surge in awareness of issues related to both gender and sexual identity, which has shaped our understanding and use of these terms. However, there is a lag between awareness and practical changes, which can also be seen within education; teaching materials and practices change slowly, and the social and linguistic changes that are currently taking place are only partially visible in education. In the present study, gender and sexuality are approached from two perspectives: by analysing two EFL textbooks for upper secondary school and examining inclusive language use and representation of non-heteronormative identities, as well as by identifying attitudes and ideas expressed in interviews with three EFL teachers. The results show that LGBTQ+ representation is still scarce in these two textbooks; even though heterosexuality is not overtly reinforced in lexical choices, non-heteronormative relationships are not included. In addition, gender is still mostly portrayed as a binary, and gender issues are largely linked to male-female equality. In terms of the interviews, a general finding is that the participants are all aware of the importance of including and giving a voice to different gender and sexual identities when planning their teaching. However, deeply rooted traditions and the gender binary still play a role in how LGBTQ+ topics are perceived and addressed. Overall, it appears that teachers display more awareness and active inclusion of non-binary and non-heteronormative identities than what can be found in the textbooks.

Added to this research three narratives of interior youth who identify themselves as non-binary Trans* people and echo their voices and resistances in different Higher Education Institutions, two of them located in cities in the interior of the state of Paraná and the third inland from the state of São Paulo. The cartographic experience occurred through the displacement of this researcher to the territory of composition, where the meetings, interviews and follow-up of the proceduralities that take place in the daily life of the universities took place. Through the travel device - named in the course of the construction of this map/dissertation, as a cartographic way of producing knowledge/experience - we connect the Star, Moon and Sky that embarked with us and shared part of the luggage that they bring in their bodies/experimentation. In unraveling the lines that run through this experience, we are allied with the concerns of the Philosophy of Difference, Feminist Studies, Queers and Transfeminist perspectives, as well as Cartography itself, in order to search for the following clues: map the agencies that cross the experiences of Trans* people non-binaries in the context of Higher Education Institutions, as well as accompanying the deterritorialization and reterritorialization movements provoked by els with, to and at the u...
