A Constituição Orgânica em Aristóteles: a substância natural no seu mais elevado grau / Organic Constitution in Aristotle: a natural substance in its highest degreeCarvalho, Rodrigo Romão de 17 April 2017 (has links)
This research aims to develop a study on the aristotelian notion of organic constitution, which seek to propose an examination of the natural philosophy of Aristotle concerning the aspect, assigned to the body, to be natural substance in its highest degree, establishing an analysis comparative between elementary compounds, inanimate homoeomerous compounds and organic compounds. Therefore, I intend, first, to promote an analysis regarding the substantial nature of living organisms. Then delimit an investigation around the kinds of natural compositions, taking into account the way in which natural necessity would be involved in the constitutive process of such compositions. And finally, offer an interpretation relating to Chapter 12 of De Caelo IV, which relies on discerning the formal nature associated, on the one hand, the characteristic properties of homoeomerous bodies generally considered in themselves and for themselves, and, on the other hand, the characteristic properties of the organic constitution in order to clarify the differences between then. I think that, with this study, also will be possible understand in a clearly way the reason, in this conception of nature, it takes the living organism as the paradigm of natural substances (ousiai).

The principle of solidarity: A restatement of John Rawls' law of peoplesTrifunovic, Milica 25 April 2013 (has links)
Meine Kritikpunkte an Rawls: 1. / In my disertation I have tried to present a theory of global justice. This theory has for its basis the thought of John Rawls. Rawls expressed his thaughts about the topic in his last book „The Law of Peoples.“ On the one hand I explain his theory while on the other I criticize it. My critique on Rawls goes accoring the following lines: 1. No elaborated disitiniction betwen the ideal and nonideal theory 2. Unfinished principles for the ideal theory of global justice I point to the possible amelioration of Rawls´ theory of global justice through: 1. Differentiation of the normative and descriptive ideal and nonideal theory (through this disticition is the stucture of Rawls´ argument clearer) 2. Introduction of three prinicples that should have been Rawls´s (through these three principles the content of his theory becomes more valuable) 3. Eplaning the principle of solidarity as the principle that could have been the specific for Rawls´ theory

Artefatos e modelos da música na antiguidade ocidental / Musical artifacts and models in Western AntiquityGusmão, Cynthia Sampaio de 08 July 2015 (has links)
This work investigates the Greek notion of téchne in the ancient world through its musical instruments, in the form of physical artifacts and mathematical, geometrical and mechanical models. Because of the lack of information about ancient lutherie, it examines other forms of craftsmanship, like carpentry and metallurgy. The inquire into the nature of the musical powers of music, and its relation to musical instruments, will be done by the examination of characters like muses and daimónes, and also of the organization models of the classical philosophers. Despite the inferior place that great philosophers give to the technicians, this study sustains that they had deeply influenced the Greek thought. Regarding music, its possible to say that the luthiers role was fundamental because the material foundation conducted developments in the musical language. Besides the artifacts, the mathematical, geometrical and mechanical musical models were born in the workshops. Artifacts and models, mastered by the musicians, will be equally responsible for the musical developments.

The main objective of the present dissertation is the affirmation of the Law as “scripture”, which is, at same time, transgressor and conservative of the juridical tradition. In order to state so, one has to approach the Law to the Literature, more precisely investigating the relations that have been established between the Greek tragedy and the Law. This way, one has to investigate the general panorama in which the studies that approximate law and literature (and vice-versa) are inserted, and the Aristotelic poetics is visited in order to allow the gender and the tragic man characteristics to be examined. Basic concepts of the ancient Grece are herewith investigated – such as physis, ethos, nomos, hamartia, hybris, themis e diké – as well as the passage of the pre-law structures to the law itself which are unveiled in the Greek myths and, consequently, in the tragic gender based on studies signed by Louis Gernet and Vernant. Identified since the Aristotelic poetics, the mimesis inserted into Literature, and

Jonson's and Shakespeare's "Comedy of Affliction"Goossen, Jonathan 23 August 2011 (has links)
This dissertation explores the relevance of recent studies of Aristotle’s comic theory to the central dramatists of early modern England, Ben Jonson and William Shakespeare. Applications of the Poetics to Renaissance English drama tend to treat Aristotle’s theory historically, as a set of concepts mediated to England by continental redactions. But these often conflated the Poetics’ focus on literary form with the Renaissance’s predominant interest in literature’s rhetorical effect, reducing Aristotle’s genuinely speculative theory to a series of often pedantic literary prescriptions. Recent scholarship has both undone these misinterpretations and developed the comic theory latent in the Poetics. Ironically, these studies make Jonson’s and Shakespeare’s comedy look much more Aristotelian than do Renaissance ones. So rather than taking the Poetics simply as a possible source for each dramatist, I read it primarily as a literary theory that, when reinvigorated by modern scholarship, can explain structures and effects arrived at practically by these dramatists.
Three recent hypotheses are especially pertinent to Jonson and Shakespeare: that comic hoaxes aim to expose comic error, which is for Aristotle a deviation from the mean of virtue; that “righteous indignation” is the comic emotion equivalent to the “pity and fear” of tragedy; and that catharsis is a clarification, rather than purgation, of reason and emotion. In light of these, I offer detailed readings of four plays that demonstrate these authors’ comic range: from Jonson’s satirical Every Man Out of His Humour to the almost farcical Epicoene, and from Shakespeare’s romantic Much Ado About Nothing to the tragicomic Measure for Measure. These plays demonstrate a variety of ways in which catharsis, the end of drama, results directly from the comic hoax and involves both the audience’s and characters’ experience of indignation and their comprehension of its relationship to the emotions of envy and pity. In each case, Aristotle’s incisive but flexible theoretical framework enables an explanation of the emotional pain present in the these “comedies of affliction” and reveals remarkable similarities between dramatists usually described as direct opposites.

IL VOLTO DEMOCRATICO DI SOLONE? ANALISI DEL CORPUS DI LEGGI SOLONIANOLODDO, RITA LAURA 17 March 2015 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is the study of the “democratic Solon”, whose genesis has been reconstructed through the ancients’ accounts and the works of modern scholars. To test the Aristotelian statement that traces the origin of democracy to Solon, we have primarily considered those measures that concern the constitution (Heliaia, boule of the Four Hundred, access to high offices), in order to understand if the ancients’ judgement was based on a shareable assessment of the legislator action. For that purpose some ordinary laws attributed to Solon - on idleness, on women, funerary and welfare laws - have been considered equally indicative. Of these laws it has been investigated the Solonian origin and compatibility with the rest of the Solonian legislation, starting from an assessment of their meaning. To complement the present thesis there are three appendixes which develop some of the themes that arose during the investigation and that have been considered worth to be deepened. It is the case of the procedural question regarding the law on idleness; the dating and comment of a funerary law concerning some duties of the demarch; of the connection between Solon and the Areopagos.

The metaphysics of dappledness: Charles S. Peirce and Nancy Cartwright on the philosophy of science.Teel, Paul David Wilkinson 12 May 2011 (has links)
Contemporary philosopher of science Nancy Cartwright (b. 1944) has raised many an eyebrow with her books How the Laws of Physics Lie (1983) and The Dappled World (1999), among others. The primary task of this dissertation is to link her philosophy with that of Charles S. Peirce (1839–1914)—a link that includes Duns Scotus. My focus is especially on the criticism Peirce would have of Cartwright, and on the philosophical support he can offer her. The question is this: Given her stated philosophy of science, to what else must Cartwright be philosophically committed? This includes discussions of metaphysics, scholastic realism, laws of nature, and the very possibility of science. There are many striking similarities between Peirce and Cartwright, but I argue that he sees further and deeper into the metaphysical implications of her views on science. / Graduate
