The Sheela-na-gig and the creation of her history : a comparative analysis of two theories concerning the mysterious medieval figure

After scholars started conducting research on the medieval Sheela-na-gig carvings, a number of theories regarding the purpose and origin of the figure have been suggested. The question has been tackled through many different approaches, but still remains unfinished as there are no written records explaining what the Sheela-na-gig figure actually is. Scholars have divided into different areas, approaching the discussion from different disciplines: art history, medieval social history, and religious history (both Christian and pre-Christian) to name a few. As the figure is usually found on Christian buildings but is distinguished by very sexual imagery, it leaves the door open for many interpretations. This thesis looks at two common theories on what the Sheela-na-gig is; one which is viewing her as a Romanesque warning against lust and sin, and one which argues that the figure is a folk deity used as an amulet for childbirth, symbolising both life and death. By using discourse theory and a comparative method, this thesis compares the descriptions and arguments of the different theories, and studies the intention behind them. The thesis then shows how the theories choose to focus their search for evidence in order to support their own perspective, while also excluding information which does not serve their particular agenda.

Abstract The subject of the thesis concerns visual representations of the African diaspora in Swedish art history. The focus is on paintings by students at the Royal Swedish Academy for Fine Arts 1878–1903 for which the dockworker and artists’ model Pierre Louis Alexandre (1844–1902) posed. Twelve paintings are selected for visual analysis. Drawing on a theoretical framework provided by postcolonial studies and critical visual culture studies, the thesis investigates how Alexandre lent his body to visual types and representations, as well as how he himself emerges through these paintings. The thesis arrives at the following conclusions: Alexandre lent his body to several figures and representations constructed through contemporary orientalist ideas concerning race and the “Orient”. However, he can also be seen depicted as figures of the male worker in a modern Stockholm. Additionally, some of these images can be interpreted as the model himself emerging, thus enabling a claim to existence as an individual and subject, historical and visual. / Populärvetenskaplig sammanfattning Uppsatsen undersöker hur Pierre Louis Alexandre (1844–1905), levande modell och hamnarbetare med afrikanskt ursprung, framställdes i elevarbeten skapade på Konstakademien mellan 1878–1903. Med hjälp av postkoloniala studier och kritiska visuella kulturstudier samt konstvetenskapliga metoder för bildanalys undersöks tolv målningar som han poserade för. De frågor som ställs inför verken berör hur Alexandre lånade sin kropp till visuella representationer och typer, samt även hur han själv framträder genom målningarna. Målningarnas visuella innehåll och produktionssammanhang analyseras i relation till verkens och modellens samtida kontext, utifrån konsthistoriska perspektiv rörande konstakademiska ideal, och idéer kring ras, genus och klass. Resultatet visar att flera av de figurer modellen lånade sin kropp till konstruerades enligt samtida orientalistiska idéer kring ras och ”Orienten”. Dock så kan flera av verken istället ses skildra arbetaren som figur i ett samtida Stockholm. Slutligen kan Alexandre själv tolkas framträda genom verken, vilket möjliggör ett anspråk på historisk och visuell existens som individ och subjekt.

This essay investigates and compares two Swedish artist homes made into museums using an applied version of Danish scholar Rune Gade’s exhibition analysis method. The homes that were chosen for the study are Tallbo, in the region of Gästrikland, the home of Swedish painter Ecke Hedberg (1868-1959) and Bror Hjorths Hus in the city of Uppsala, the home of Swedish painter and sculptor Bror Hjorth (1894-1968). The essay focuses on the permanent exhibitions of the artists private homes and ateliers, and the interior and artworks that are shown. This essay answers the questions of which objects have been chosen for the exhibitions (with a presentation of the interior and art in both homes), how the objects are organized and curated, how the objects are presented and in which public context the exhibition functions in. The latter question is answered within the frame of intermediation, musealization, cultural heritage and identity connected to Australian historian and curator Linda Young’s theories of historical homes. / I denna studie undersöks och jämförs två svenska musealiserade konstnärshem utifrån en tillämpad användning av den danske konsthistorikern Rune Gades metod för utställningsanalys. Konstnärshemmen som valts ut för studien är Tallbo i Gästrikland, hem till konstnären Ecke Hedberg (1868-1959) och Bror Hjorths Hus i Uppsala, hem till konstnären och skulptören Bror Hjorth (1894-1968). Fokus ligger på interiören och konstverken i de permanenta utställningarna. Studien svarar på frågor som rör vilka objekt som valts ut för utställningarna, hur föremålen är organiserade, hur föremålen är presenterade och i vilken offentlig kontext som utställningarna fungerar. Detta besvaras utifrån perspektiv som förmedling, musealisering, kulturarv och identitet kopplat till den australiensiska historikern och curatorn Linda Youngs teorier om historiska hem.

Yves Kleins sista verk Eldmålningarna 1961–1962. / Yves Klein’s last work The Fire Paintings 1961–1962

The essay analyzes the final series of work by the French postmodern artist Yves Klein. The Fire paintings were created in 1961-1962 during a performance at the research laboratory of the National Gaswork of France, located outside Paris. Klein used a two-meter-long gas pipe to spray fire on wet canvas and damped Swedish cardboard to create an abstract, minimalistic body of work. The founder of Nouveau Réalisme Klein took traces of fire through a canvas and created a series including more than 150 oeuvres. In this research, semiotic philosopher Charles Sanders Pierce's method has been applied to analyze 23 selected artworks that devise the incarnation of the myth through five different analysis theories: fire, the creation, universe, man, and passion. Through layers of conceptual ideas, the research shows that Klein's body of work is more mystical than rational, just like the artist's personality. The analyst concludes that the 23 selected Fire paintings are constructed with ambiguous philosophical questions about existence and invoke our imagination with inspiration from alchemy. As in the Nouveau Réalisme manifesto, the essence of the paintings was to create traces of life. The research substantiates that the conceptual series of oeuvre represents the creation of life and universe, as the end of our physical life marks the beginning of our reincarnation. The inspiration for the Fire paintings came from Catholicism, Rosicrusian Order, spiritualism, judo, alchemy, and contemporary historical situations and science during 1950-1960.

The aim of this study is to explore heritage processes within contemporary urban planning in Sweden, which is done through a single-case study. The point of departure for the study is the management of Havrekvarnen, an early modernist industrial building within an urban development area of Nacka, Sweden. Through parallel decisions by the County Administrative Board and the local Municipality in 2016, the building was firstly, listed with the strongest legal, cultural, and historical protection available, and secondly, the municipal urban regulations were changed so that the landowner was given permission to pursuit a reconstruction of the building, replicating its original appearance. As such the case constitutes a hitherto unique example of a listed future reconstruction in Sweden. The study examines how the process took place, focusing on actors and critical junctures involved in the execution and how the description of the building's heritage-values changed. The study uses a composite theoretical framework of authorized heritage discourse and actor network theory. To this an explaining-outcome process tracing is applied as method. Through a sequential process of collecting empirical data, in the form of archival records and interviews, the process was mapped through the conceptualization of a causal mechanism. The method had not previously been used in the field of art history and was chosen as such with a tentative approach. The study gives an extensive presentation of the legal and practical framework surrounding heritage processes within urban planning in Sweden, as well as puts the study within a local historical context. The results of the study show that within the observed case, a trade-off situation between authenticity and aesthetic historical values arose, caused by the poor technical condition of the building: the aesthetic values were deemed to take precedence in the assessment. The study also shows how antiquarian consultants have had a decisive influence on the process of legislative enabling of the reconstruction of Havrekvarnen. The research design’s use of process tracing to map heritage processes is thus deemed useful for future enquiries within the field of art history and heritage studies.

Homoerotisk sensibilitet : Byggandet av homosexuell identitet genom konsthistorien / Homoerotic Sensibility : The Construction of Homosexual Identity Throughout the History of Art

The question of homoerotic sensibility is, in the purpose of this thesis, a matter of visual language connected to the portrayal of male bodies. By identifying this sensibility throughout the western art canon the essay seeks to understand its origins, development and function in relation to expressions of power. With the introduction of theorists such as Alois Riegl, Laura Mulvey, Abigail Solomon-Godeau and Raewyn Connell, the aim is to deconstruct homosexual masculinity. Adapting formal analysis and parts of visual semiotics, the focus lies on the visual expression of power through the homoerotic gaze, and asks what consequences it has in forming homosexual identity. Greek antiquity is home not only to the ideals that foster western art history, but is also where we find early examples of same-sex affection being portrayed in the arts. Hence classical antiquity is so important for the homoerotic: whenever the classical language of style is popular throughout history, we are sure to find homoerotic sensibility. For reasons mentioned, the main periods analyzed are the Italian Renaissance, the French Neoclassicism and then, naturally the late 20th century onwards as this is the period of gay liberation and modern homosexual identity.  By identifying classical acceptance of homosexual relations only in the form of a clear social hierarchy, we soon discover how homosexuality has appropriated the idea of binary difference within its masculinity throughout history. Accepting relationships only between erastes and eromenos, or man and ephebe, homosexuality is forced to exist only on the terms of difference of power. With classical ideals, these tendencies are recurring in the visual representation of male homosexuality, and becomes a big part of the liberation and forming of a modern identity in the late twentieth century. As a result of objectification of the male body, in combination with idealized and sexualized power, modern gay culture has in many ways embraced a destructive culture shaped by misogynist ideas of hegemonic culture, where sexual violence exists, but is not spoken of.
