České střelecké platformy a události masové střelby: analýza komunikačních rámců / Czech gun-owner platforms and mass shooting events: framing analysis

Čadek, Matěj January 2021 (has links)
The primary goal of this diploma thesis is to analyze online and social media communication of the Czech gun-owner platforms. The online space is where these platforms are able to gather support for their cause and influence the mainstream opinion on firearms, use of guns and gun laws. This thesis presents a case study of online posts and articles of analyzed actors vis-à-vis European mass shooting incidents. Such events usually spark debates about stricter gun control which the Czech gun-owner platforms naturally oppose. The analysis is underpinned by the theory of framing and uses a methodological design proposed by the scholars Dennis Chong and James Druckman. Firstly, a basic set of frames is identified. Secondly, these frames are tested against a collection of posts and articles by one of the analyzed groups. It is concluded that most of the texts are explicitly framed using one of the identified communication frames. However, the usage of these frames varies based on the motives behind a given mass shooting. It also differs in the case of Czech incidents. Lastly, this work investigates whether and in what way the frames of gun-owner platforms are adopted by elites and the mainstream media and. In this case, a surprising conclusion is made: Despite the ideal framing environment - given the absence of...

Eriksson, Elin January 2015 (has links)
This qualitative study examines how emergency people are framed in Swedish evening-, and local newspapers during the forest fire in Västmanland, Sweden 2014. The study also includes if there is any difference between the framing due to the location of the newspaper. The study is based on qualitative text analysis. The theoretical basis is representation, framing theory, media image, media logic and a few conceptions from crisis communication theory. An overall result is that critique of emergency people never are answered. An other is that critique often is directed to people who haven’t been able to affect the critique situations.

The gender battle between Sportbladet and SVT Sport– : A comparative quantitative content analysis of Sportbladet and SVT Sports' portrayal of gender and sport on Instagram

Madestam, Sandra, Rydén, Matilda January 2023 (has links)
The study aimed to investigate how female and male athletes are framed on Sportbladet and SVT Sport’s Instagram pictures. The study also examines and compares Sportbladet and SVT Sport to see if there are any differences between their coverage, since Sportbladet is commercial media and SVT Sport is public service. We have conducted a quantitative content analysis where we analyzed 655 Instagram pictures in total, 280 were from Sportbladet and 375 from SVT Sport. The Instagram pictures that were used were from the months of February, May, August, and November in 2022. The results showed that men dominated Sportbladet, while women and men were equally represented on SVT Sport. Although the results also showed that women and men are framed differently on both Sportbladet and SVT Sport. Women are generally framed as passive, happy, and intimate, while men are active, cocky, and formal. The results also showed that Sportbladet and SVT Sport have different agendas, which could be based on what possibly sells the most. Sportbladet, which is a commercial, posts more Instagram pictures of sportsmen. Simultaneously, SVT Sport posts an equal number of pictures of both genders.

More of a drunken mess than a National Team with Coca-Cola in the bottles" : A Critical Discourse Analysis of the Swedish Evening Newspapers' representation of the Swedish Women's National Football Team during the 2023 World Cup

Gustafsson, Ida, Nilsson, Linn January 2023 (has links)
In this thesis, ten articles from the evening newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen are analyzed with the aim of examining how Swedish evening newspapers reproduce or challenge stereotypes in their reporting on the Swedish women's national football team during the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, based on gender and framing theory. We employ a critical discourse analysis rooted in Norman Fairclough's three-dimensional model. By analyzing textual, discursive, and social practices in the reporting, we uncover the underlying power structures that shape how the Swedish women's national team is portrayed and perceived in the media during the 2023 Women's World Cup. The analysis of articles from Aftonbladet and Expressen reveals clearly that the evening newspapers largely reproduce and reinforce stereotypes, preserving the gender power hierarchy. Even though the articles were written by women, tendencies toward stereotypical reporting were observed. The logic of the evening newspapers contributes to the persistence of these tendencies. The recurring stereotypes and the underlying gender bias in the media point to the necessity of cultural and social changes. A deeper transformation is required to break the entrenched structures and norms that continue to shape the representation of female athletes in the media.

Bergström, Isabell January 2022 (has links)
The aim of this study is to perform a rhetorical analysis of how motherhood is used as a shared platform for rhetorical agency to discuss the deadly violence that occurs in the urban periphery. The object of study is the theater play Mammorna; a drama that is based on interviews with women of a low socio-economic status that lost their sons to violence. Using a close-reading method, this study seeks to investigate how motherhood is used to create rhetorical agency, as well as how the deadly violence in the urban periphery is articulated in the play. Furthermore, this bachelor thesis discusses the complex relation between the narrative created in Mammorna and the story of real-life people, to understand how the play effects the agency of women living in areas that are exposed to criminality and violence. The theory of this work is based on Campbell’s definition of agency as the capacity to act in a way that will be recognized or heeded by others, in addition to Entman’s framing analysis and Alcoff’s perspective on the problem with speaking for others. The conclusion made is that motherhood could be a useful platform to form a shared identity between women of different race and class to stand together against violence – no matter where it occurs.

Indigenous media relations: reconfiguring the mainstream

Hiltz, Tia 02 September 2014 (has links)
Much of the scholarly literature on Indigenous media relations frames Indigenous peoples as passive players in the mainstream media, and focuses on negative elements such as stereotypes. This thesis challenges this view, finding that Indigenous peoples in Canada actively and strategically engage with mainstream and social media as they forward their social and political agendas. This thesis provides an analysis of the counter-colonial narrative in Canada by offering a new perspective on Indigenous media relations, focusing as a case on the Idle No More movement. Emphasizing three dimensions of communication--the mainstream print media, social media, and individuals involved in Indigenous media relations--I examine the ways in which Indigenous agency and empowerment have the potential to change discourses in the media. As sources of insight I draw on a discourse analysis of mainstream news media, a qualitative analysis of social media and on interviews with those who have significant experience in Indigenous media relations. Interviews with prominent media personalities and individuals involved in media relations (including CBC’s Duncan McCue and Janet Rogers; Four Host Nations CEO Tewanee Joseph, and others) illustrate the novel and impactful ways indigenous peoples in Canada are actively and strategically shaping the mainstream media. These representations create a more complex picture of Indigenous peoples as they counter the stereotyped or victimized media narratives within which Indigenous peoples have historically been placed.

Framing of diabetes in the Swedish press: a quantitative content analysis of Swedish daily and evening newspapers

Sandqvist, Cecilia January 2018 (has links)
Background: Diabetes is a global health issue on the rise. Besides genetics as a cause of diabetes, diet, weight and lifestyle are amongst the main factors. Due to the modernized society, new technology and risks, there has been a shift in responsibility of safety and health. As a part of a health promoting policy development during the last few decades there has also been a natural de-authorization of health knowledge and expertise. Governmental expertise has been decentralized to the society and so has the responsibilities. Traces of this new health paradigm can be seen in the media discourse. It has been seen in studies of the reporting of diabetes in North American press, that societal factors – such as labor market, health care and infrastructure – often get veiled by individuals’ responsibility and guilt due to lifestyle and life choices. This affects how individuals feel about their life situation and how the public perceive them.     Method and material: A quantitative content analysis was performed on 112 articles from six Swedish broadsheet and tabloid newspapers. The articles were coded with variables measuring article theme, dominant framing of diabetes´ causes and whose responsibility, what arguments are used and what agents with dignity can be seen. Excerpts from the articles were also analyzed with qualitative tools as modality and argumentation analysis. Results: Similarities between the Swedish and the North American newspapers were discovered. Societal factors and structures as causes and means of responsibilities were not as prominent as those aiming for the individual. The responsibility of the society was also reported to a much greater extent than society as a factor contributing to cause diabetes. This can be considered a sign of the health promoting strategy and the individualism that is rooted in modernization, industrialization and economic liberalization. Doctors and scientists were given dignity as often as celebrities and private citizens, which indicates the de-authorization of health knowledge and the further use of scientists and doctors as a truth repository in media. Several of the articles concern the critique of the diabetes unawareness and predominant individual responsibility that was the outset of this study. Celebrities and private citizens were frequently given dignity in these cases. In their criticizing, high modality contributed to a strong authority in their knowledge.

Hög tid: att undersöka kvällspressens cannabisrapportering : En kvantitativ och kvalitativ studie av medierapporteringen om cannabis sedan 2010 i Aftonbladet och Expressen / High time: a study of cannabis coverage in the evening press : A quantitative and qualitative study of cannabis media moverage since 2010 in Aftonbladet and Expressen

Neemé, Kevin, Zetterquist, Viktor January 2024 (has links)
This study delves into the media coverage of cannabis by analyzing articles from Aftonbladet and Expressen between 2010 and 2024. Through a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, the study examines the tone, content, and trends in reporting on cannabis through these years. A total of 904 articles were analyzed, with a focus on identifying patterns, trends, and shifts in the portrayal of cannabis in the two newspapers. The quantitative content analysis involves coding and categorizing a large sample of articles to uncover key themes and frequencies of coverage. Additionally, a qualitative discourse analysis is conducted on a subset of texts to deepen the understanding of how cannabis is framed and represented in the media. The methodological rigor includes inter-coderreliability checks and statistical evaluations to ensure consistency and validity in the analysis process. The findings reveal a predominance of negative articles, with a particular focus on domestic issues in Sweden such as increasing gang violence. The study also highlights the influence of media discourse in shaping perceptions of cannabis, portraying it both as an illegal commodity associated with violence and as a symbol of deviance. By scrutinizing the language and narratives used in media representations, this research sheds light on the construction of cannabis in Swedish newspapers and the potential impact on public attitudes and policies.
