"By All the Codes which I Am Acquainted with, I Am a Devilishly Wicked Specimen of the Sex" : The Individual/Culture Conflict in Kate Chopin’s The Awakening

Mešinović, Samra January 2005 (has links)
<p>At the turn of the 19th century, ideas promoting women’s rights were sweeping across America. During that time Kate Chopin’s The Awakening was published, portraying a young woman, Edna Pontellier, who after several years of emotional unfullfilment in her marriage questions her place as a woman in her marriage as well in society. Edna’s Presbyterian Kentuckian upbringing is in opposition to Catholic Creole society that her husband belongs to. Creole society, at that time, was governed by its unwritten social codes, which were especially clear on issues concerning women’s traditional roles in society in connection to marriage and social duties. In this essay I present how Edna’s emotional awakening and her struggle to achieve independence are in conflict with the cultural norms that exist in Creole society. Also, I argue that the reason why Edna fails in her search for individual freedom is because her awakening is emotional and not intellectual; she lacks knowledge and cannot perceive herself beyond the conventions that limit and oppress her. Additionally, Edna cannot find guidance in any of the other women because they all act within the frames of the role they are playing.</p>

Social codes in the workplace : A qualitative study of social codes in the workplace and its possible limitations and resources for the human workforce.

Mesch, Mikaela, Freij, Gabriella January 2018 (has links)
A qualitative study regarding the phenomenon social codes was made to create a deeper understanding and develop knowledge about how social codes possibly could have an effect on human labor. The results of the study showed that social codes existed on all the participants workplaces. This was interpreted to imply that social codes was affecting all individuals in a social context on work. The questions of issue was if social codes existed on the labor market, and if these codes could possibly affect the human capital. The aim of the study was to implement interviews with four participants. Further it continued with a phenomenological analysis to illustrate differences and similarities within the results of the interviews. The participants of the study was between 23-56 years old. The study was not made to be able to generalise the studies results to a whole population, but instead to find a more profound description of the phenomenon social codes. Keywords were formulated and then decomposed into five themes to describe social codes and their impact on the human capital. The themes of the study was interpretation of rules and social interaction, alienation and communion, varied impact, changeability and work culture. The results of the study was based on subjective experiences and thoughts, which were interpreted into the discussion about how these results were useful for other employees.

Material Objects as Means of Portraying Female Characters' Personality in the 20th century : As Exemplified in the three Short Stories by J. D. Salinger, V. Woolf and F. Weldon

Zelenenkaya, Ekaterina January 2013 (has links)
The world we live in is full of material objects that serve as signs and thus are an important tool in literary texts. The purpose of the present essay is to illustrate how material objects are used to portray personalities of female characters, their inner world and attitudes, their ways of life and position in society. It is especially interesting in the context of the 20th century in the Western world, when the culture of consumption was gaining momentum and the role of a woman was gradually changing. The short stories analysed in the essay are written in the Western context in the 20th century, which are “A Perfect Day for Bananafish” by J.D. Salinger, “Moments of Being: ‘Slater’s Pins Have no Points’” by V. Woolf and “The Bottom Line and the Sharp End” by F. Weldon. The material objects mentioned in the texts are classified and analysed due to their role and purpose in the short stories.

Dr. Eleine Mad

Jacobsson, Madeleine January 2021 (has links)
Dr. Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it. / <p>Recorded sound and image material of the presentation is available for private use.</p>
