Peace-washing : The pacifization of the Swedish arms export

Wehrling, Freja January 2024 (has links)
Sweden’s role internationally is often cited as a paradox which is argued to have its origin in the opposition between the state’s international humanitarianism and its large arms export. The tension here has often been examined from the perspectives of militarization in research on the subject. This thesis instead argued that a comprehensive understanding of peace is needed to analyze the paradox holistically. By semiotically engaging with the Swedish Government's annual reports on arms export control, this thesis could identify the construction of peace within the arms export during the years 2014-2021. A usage of the combined perspectives of pacifization, militarization and an in-depth review of the peace concept, allowed for a comprehensive understanding of peace within these discourses. The thesis discovered that elements of the Swedish arms export were framed as (1) a precondition for peace, (2) an agreement of peace, and (3) an enhancement of peace. Moreover, the material revealed the juxtaposition of two different versions of peace, one liberal and one emancipatory understanding. As these versions are associated with different values and practices of peace, their coexistence in Swedish arms export is argued to be the heart of Sweden’s foreign policy paradox.

Stereotyper och Traditionell Könsrepresentation : En semiotisk analys angående final girl stereotypen i The Texas Chain Saw Massacre / Stereotypes and Traditional Gender Representation : A semiotic analysis regarding the final girl stereotype in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

Söderholm Mogensen, Hugo January 2022 (has links)
The purpose of this essay was to examine and compare the portrayal of the final girl stereotype in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), based on literature about gender representation and slasher movie stereotypes. To achieve the purpose of the study, a comparative method was used in the form of a film semiotic analysis. This method was also purposefully adjusted for analyzing the representation of a character’s manners and behavior. To strengthen the analysis, theoretical approaches about stereotypes, slasher movies, and gender representation was used, with special reference to Carol J. Clovers essay: Her Body, Himself (1978). The result proved that the stereotype was portrayed differently in both movies, and that the latter mentioned one included a stronger and more obvious stereotypical representation. This outcome may have been affected by the large time-gap between the two movies, as well as the feminist movements that had influence on the movie industry during the time of their respective productions.

Stereotyper inom produktkommunikation : Hur porträtteras manliga respektive kvinnliga ideal i skönhetsindustrin? / Stereotypes in product communication : How are masculine and feminine ideals portrayed inbeauty industry?

Florén, Emmie January 2024 (has links)

“I prefer Asian models over white, because I am Chinese” : En kvalitativ studie om kinesiska utbytesstudenters uppfattningar om västerländska modeller i kinesisk reklam / “I prefer Asian models over white, because I am Chinese” : A qualitative study about chinese exchange students perceptions on western models in chinese advertising

Laestander, Carl January 2016 (has links)
The aim of this study has been to, from a comparative perspective examine how the use of western models in Chinese advertising are perceived by chinese exchange students living in Sweden. The scientific approach in this study has been both with semiotic picture analysis and qualitative interviews. The study's empirical material has consisted of pictures of white models in fashion magazines published in China for example Vouge China. These pictures were presented to the respondents during the interviews, and questions were asked about them and the answers is also a part of this study's empirical material. The theoretical perspectives used in this study is based on theories about whiteness, stereotypes and occidentalism. The results in the study has shown that the whithe models are presented with high status both in the semiotic picture analysis and the qualitative interviews. It has also shown that the respondents prefer asian models over white in advertising in China, especially with products conected to the body and that the white stereotype is almost described identiaclly by all the respondents. Finally the result has found that the ethnicity is connected to picture enviroments, in that way if it is a white model it should be a western enviroment.

Bild i beredskap : En kvalitativ innehållsanalys av MSB:s visuella kommunikation på Instagram / Images in preparedness

Johansson, Elaine, Göthe, Ludwig January 2024 (has links)
Given the heightened security situation in Sweden following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, we've focused on analyzing how Swedish preparedness is visually communicated on social media. Specifically, we've examined the visual communication on Instagram by the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency, also known as MSB, aiming to offer insights to enhance visual preparedness communication to Swedish society. Through a qualitative content analysis of images posted on MSB's Instagram over a two-year period, our study has provided valuable insights for improving MSB's visual communication. Our findings reveal that while MSB portrays gender equality in professional roles, the visual representation of civilian women and men at home is unequal, with women being overrepresented. There's also an unequal representation between urban and rural areas, with rural areas being notably underrepresented. Furthermore, our study suggests that MSB lacks a distinct visual identity that fosters recognition for the agency, which contradicts a principle of good e-governance, the aim to be visible and heard on social media. In conclusion, MSB demonstrates good e-governance through its Instagram account, adhering to guidelines for effective e-governance by providing information, maintaining transparency, and encouraging dialogue between the public sector and the public. The agency presents preparedness with a positive outlook, emphasizing our collective ability to tackle crises together.

: A comparative and qualitative analysis of the costume drama Bridgerton (2020)

Svensson, Emilia January 2024 (has links)
This study focuses on how taste can be perceived visually between two families in the first season of Netflix’s Bridgerton (2020) with a focus on costume, color and taste. Through the use of qualitative, comparative and semiotic methods, taken from a contemporary Western perspective, screenshots from two separate scenes will be analyzed to examine how the families convey a difference in taste and class based on theory by; Beverley Skeggs, Maria Sturken & Lisa Cartwright, Pierre Bourdieu and Gunther Kress & Theo Van Leeuwen. The results convey that taste and class is perceived depending on how the families’ costumes, focusing on color and fabric, work together with each other. One family shows a consistent use of color and fabric that portray a sense of unity, while the other family focuses on displaying individuality and personality traits through their costumes. Additionally, visual parallels are drawn between Bridgerton and the 2015 adaptation of Cinderella, particularly in how the costumes of Cinderella and her stepfamily may subconsciously influence the audience's interpretation of the characters in Bridgerton. This paper includes a design documentation after page 38 with the name “Mångfald i illustrationer” that is a fictional project in the form of an image bank for the organization Bris. The purpose was to create new illustrations for their website under the section "Vanliga ämnen" that were relatable to the target audience; teenagers between the ages of 13-18. The result is twelve illustrations that can be used in various ways in relation to the section "Vanliga ämnen", that feel inviting and contemporary for the target audience.

Att skapa med och mot andra : Gemensamt skapande och digitalt konstutövande på r/Place

Holm, Anna January 2024 (has links)
In this thesis, the hugely popular online art experiment r/Place is analyzed as an interesting example of digital art making and collaborative creation on a massive scale. This is done in an effort to contribute to the exploration of how art making and the artist’s role is shaped by a digital component as well as its accompanying opportunities, in this case collaboration. In the analysis the creations and participation of ten Reddit-communities taking part in the experiment are studied through the lens of semiotics and performativity. Through the analysis it was concluded that the art-making and resulting creations were not only shaped by the digital and shared nature of the format but also by the limited resources available, resulting in a strongly competitive atmosphere. The competitiveness highlights how two concepts often seen as opposites, creation and destruction, can be two sides of the same process depending on your perspective.

Homoerotisk sensibilitet : Byggandet av homosexuell identitet genom konsthistorien / Homoerotic Sensibility : The Construction of Homosexual Identity Throughout the History of Art

Varnauskas, Jacob January 2020 (has links)
The question of homoerotic sensibility is, in the purpose of this thesis, a matter of visual language connected to the portrayal of male bodies. By identifying this sensibility throughout the western art canon the essay seeks to understand its origins, development and function in relation to expressions of power. With the introduction of theorists such as Alois Riegl, Laura Mulvey, Abigail Solomon-Godeau and Raewyn Connell, the aim is to deconstruct homosexual masculinity. Adapting formal analysis and parts of visual semiotics, the focus lies on the visual expression of power through the homoerotic gaze, and asks what consequences it has in forming homosexual identity. Greek antiquity is home not only to the ideals that foster western art history, but is also where we find early examples of same-sex affection being portrayed in the arts. Hence classical antiquity is so important for the homoerotic: whenever the classical language of style is popular throughout history, we are sure to find homoerotic sensibility. For reasons mentioned, the main periods analyzed are the Italian Renaissance, the French Neoclassicism and then, naturally the late 20th century onwards as this is the period of gay liberation and modern homosexual identity. By identifying classical acceptance of homosexual relations only in the form of a clear social hierarchy, we soon discover how homosexuality has appropriated the idea of binary difference within its masculinity throughout history. Accepting relationships only between erastes and eromenos, or man and ephebe, homosexuality is forced to exist only on the terms of difference of power. With classical ideals, these tendencies are recurring in the visual representation of male homosexuality, and becomes a big part of the liberation and forming of a modern identity in the late twentieth century. As a result of objectification of the male body, in combination with idealized and sexualized power, modern gay culture has in many ways embraced a destructive culture shaped by misogynist ideas of hegemonic culture, where sexual violence exists, but is not spoken of.

Abject and Liminal Bodies : The Dead Body in CSI: Miami and Six Feet Under

Stenström, Kristina January 2010 (has links)

This study researches fictional representations of dead bodies in two television series in which representations of dead bodies are prominent features. The study introduces a brief history of the human body as a societal metaphor. The narrower theme of the study, the dead body as a cultural surface and carrier of meaning and ritual potential, is discussed through specific popular cultural television productions.

The two television series discussed in this study, CSI: Miami and Six Feet Under, are researched both through film analyses and focus group discussions. The film analyses have aimed to show to what use dead bodies are put in the narratives of the programs. The focus group discussions have sought to shed light on the audiences understanding of the meaning of the dead body, and also how this feature of the programs influence the audience and their experience of the programs.

The study shows that both series introduce and underline dead bodies as floating in-between subject and object status. A dead person is often introduced as a subject and then stripped of his or her cultural identity and reintroduced as an object or as having an uncertain cultural status which lies somewhere between object and subject. This borderline status of the body serves as a threat in the series, and the subject status of the body is reinstated in every case possible. Order is a central concept for the study and both series strive to reassert and maintain order, either in relationships or on a societal level. The reinstatement of order is reflected on the physical body as a metaphor and narrative device in both series. The reestablishment of the subject status of a dead body is part of this strive for order. The audience research concludes that all focus group members agree that the representations of dead bodies in the programs are important for their experience of the programs. Some find them unpleasant while others think they are interesting. The audience also listed several other themes of the programs which they found important. The representations of dead bodies strike the audience members both as “real” and material, and as metaphors.
