Soup, Fins, and Exploitation: An Analysis of the Current State of Shark Finning

Huang, Katie 01 January 2014 (has links)
Despite being one of the most recognizable sea creatures in the world, sharks remain widely misunderstood by the public. Media coverage often sensationalizes them as dangerous creatures, when in reality, humans pose a much more significant threat to sharks than vice versa. Over the past few decades, overfishing has decimated populations worldwide as demand increases for byproducts such as meat, cartilage, and fins in particular, a crucial ingredient in the Chinese delicacy of shark fin soup. Finning, a particularly inefficient practice that promotes overfishing and waste, occurs when fishers cut off fins at sea and throw carcasses overboard. As sharks play an important role in marine ecosystems as apex predators and are slow to reproduce, increased attention to shark conservation is urgently needed. Although there have been attempts by international organizations such as the United Nations and by individual countries, current legislation has proven to be inadequate in combating shark exploitation. Though public awareness is on the rise thanks to increased media coverage and environmental advocacy, sharks still need greater protection in the face of overharvest and stock depletion. This thesis details the current state of shark exploitation, including shark biology, public perceptions of sharks, and current levels of shark finning, as well as the economics behind the trade. It also analyzes previous actions taken both at the international and national levels. Finally, it recommends further actions to be undertaken in order to preserve declining shark populations and keep them from extinction.

Development and characterization os soup of vegetable and meat with the wild passion fruit (Passiflora tenuifila Killip) submitted to the sterilization process / Desenvolvimento e caracterizaÃÃo de sopa de vegetais e carne à base de maracujà silvestre (Passiflora tenuifila Killip) submetida ao processo de esterilizaÃÃo

Dayse Karine Rodrigues Holanda 05 February 2015 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento CientÃfico e TecnolÃgico / CoordenaÃÃo de AperfeÃoamento de Pessoal de NÃvel Superior / Passion fruit Passiflora tenuifila is a non-commercial and wild species, popularly known as garlic - passion fruit, its use as an ingredient in soups contributes to diversification of the product and improvement in nutritional and functional properties. This study aimed to develop and characterize a formulation of soup of vegetables and meat, using as basis the functional species of wild passion fruit (Passiflora tenuifila Killip) and as a thickener flour of the yellow passion fruit peel (Passiflora edulis flavicarpa). The planning of the formulation was done, making up calculations of formulation on the components of chemical composition of the ingredients and their influence on the final composition of the soup. The sterilization process of the soup was conducted in a vertical autoclave, based on the value of F0 minimum of 8 minutes. In prepared soup, were determined physico-chemical analysis, chemical composition, calories and functional characteristics, such as analysis of bioactive compounds (total polyphenols and total antioxidant activity) and dietary fiber. Furthermore, it was made a commercial sterility testing and sensory evaluation of soup. In sensory evaluation, was check the effect of storage time on the bitter taste of soup (1, 19 and 37 days after the sterilization process) and its acceptance. The soup showed results consistent regarding their chemical composition, and between functional compounds showed a content of total dietary fiber of 3,88 g 100 g-1. The calories of the soup was 22,81 kcal 100 g-1. For the content of total polyphenol was found 103,43 mg gallic acid 100 g-1 and antioxidant activity of 4,09 uM Trolox g-1 (ABTS assay) and 9,98 uM g-1 ferrous sulphate (FRAP assay). In sensory evaluation, it was found that the storage time at room temperature did not affect the bitter taste of soup and the average score given by the judges in sensory acceptance was 3,02, corresponding to the term "not liked nor disliked" the scale used. The thermal treatment applied was efficient and the soup is up to the standards required by law and is considered as a commercially sterile product. Based on these results, it can be conclude that it is possible to prepare a formulation of soup of vegetables and meat with added passion fruit species (P. tenuifila and P. edulis), with a good nutritional quality and a source of natural antioxidants. The soup could be considered a functional food with a source of high dietary fiber.

Oliveira, Laila Thaíse Batista de 29 August 2016 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / This dissertation aims to understand how the soup opera, as the most popular audiovisual serial narrative in the country, contributes for the construction of race and gender as categories which involve power relations, and analyze how the black woman is represented in those productions through the protagonist characters interpreted by Taís Bianca Gama Araújo Ramos in the global soup operas carefully selected - Da Cor do Pecado, Cobras e Lagartos, Cheias de Charme, Viver a Vida and Geração Brasil. The study is divided in two stages, the first part focuses on presenting the black woman trajectory in Brazilian society, considering socioeconomic aspects, going through the organization of the black population as social movement. It also aims to discuss media, the soup opera and its techniques, bringing up considerations about social representation in media and reflecting in which level it contributes for identity formations of black women in society. In a second stage, we have focused on the empiric research. Therefore, a corpus has been selected composed by scenes from the different phases of the soup operas we have mentioned before, where the protagonist is presented or referred and, furthermore, where it is problematized themes which involve gender and race as pillars of discussion. To reach the goals we have proposed, it will be applied the methodologic procedure presented by Diana Rose (2002), named Analysis of Moving Images. Though the analytic and theoretical path, it is possible to conclude that despite the protagonism of the black woman in those narratives, some representations contribute to stigmatize her image, with negative social impacts. Moreover, the main issues addressed in those productions are relevant for the life of black women, in general, fulfilling an important role in mediating the debate about some social problems. Although, we have observed that the problematic is dealt in a superficial and uncritical way.

Community, self-help and mutual aid : friendly societies and the parish welfare system in rural Oxfordshire, 1834-1918

Morley, Shaun Philip January 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines welfare provision in rural Oxfordshire after the 1834 Poor Law Amendment Act. The county had little industrial development, remained largely agricultural in nature, and the region had been perceived as a backwater of friendly society development. This thesis rectifies that view and places Oxfordshire as an important component of the movement with its independent nature and early rejection of affiliated order branches that emanated from urbanized and industrialized areas. There is no evidence of impetus given to friendly society formation after the implementation of the new poor law with the general increase in societies continuing. However, the relationship with poor law administration changed. A case study of Stonesfield demonstrates how the friendly society became the heart of village life and was integral to self help and support for the poor. A wider view is taken of welfare provision, with detailed assessment of a range of welfare instruments, such as coal and clothing clubs, soup kitchens, and medical clubs, together with an appraisal of their geographical spread. The range of welfare instruments available is compared to Maslow’s Hierarchy of Need, a model of human motivation. The case study of Whitchurch provides an in-depth assessment of one parish welfare system where after 1834 at least nine stands of welfare were available at all times to the poor who held a degree of selection in what was an increasingly a consumer market. The thesis is underpinned throughout by the use of extensive primary source material.

Ensembles poissoniens de boucles markoviennes / Poissonian ensembles of Markovian loops

Lupu, Titus 26 May 2015 (has links)
In this thesis I study an infinite measure on loops naturally associated to a wide range of Markovian processes and the Poisson point processes of intensity proportional to this measure (intensity parameter alpha>0). This Poissson point processes are called Poisson ensembles of Markov loops or loop soups. The measure on loops is covariant with some transformation on Markovian processes, for instance the change of time. In the setting of Brownian loop soups inside a proper open simply connected domain of C it was shown that the outer boundaries of outermost clusters of loops are, for alpha1/2, Conformal Loop Ensembles CLE(kappa), kappa in (8/3,4]. Besides, it was shown for a wide range of symmetric Markovian processes that for alpha=1/2 the occupation field of a loop soup (the sum of times spent by loops over points) is the square of the Gaussian free field. First I studied the loop soups associated to one-dimensional diffusions, and particularly the occupation field and its zeroes that delimit in this case the clusters of loops. Then I studied the loop soups on discrete graphs and metric graphs (edges replaced by continuous lines). On a metric graph on one hand the loops have a non-trivial geometry and on the other hand one has the same property as in the setting of one-dimensional diffusions that the zeroes of the occupation field delimit the clusters of loops. By combing metric graphs and the isomorphism with the Gaussian free field I have shown that alpha=1/2 is the critical parameter for random walk loop soup percolation on the discrete half-plane Z*N (existence or not of an infinite cluster of loops) and that for alpha<= 1/2 the scaling limit of outer boundaries of outermost clusters on Z*N is a CLE(kappa) on the continuum half plane.

Dr. Eleine Mad

Jacobsson, Madeleine January 2021 (has links)
Dr. Eleine Mad is Madeleine Jacobsson's spokesperson for the scientific and paranormal discoveries that arise in her worlds. She describes content, tecniques and aesthetics based on a categorization system where art is divided into different types of components and then decoded as they go. To understand the intuition's involvement in the work process, it is transformed into three separate roles by a Seeker, Collector and a Myntare(In swedish language the one who is a "myntare" -is verbally declaring a concept or term). With these roles I try to describe in what ways intuition is beneficial or devastating to the artistic work. The story of M is about a frog-like character, Delop, who leaves the home planet to seek out other worlds. In her search, Delop finds a world whose views and lifestyles differ from her experiences of "reality" as she learned to survive in it. /
Recorded sound and image material of the presentation is available for private use.
