TIANA, UMA PRINCESA ÀS AVESSAS?: A REPRESENTAÇÃO DA PERSONAGEM FEMININA NO FILME DE ANIMAÇÃO A PRINCESA E O SAPO DA WALT DISNEY

In order to accomplish the main objectives, I take as reference theoretical concepts from different areas of knowledge, emphasizing on the genres of speech, intertextuality and polyphony, in accordance with Bakhtin and his Circle, besides focusing on the notions of stereotype and gender as a cultural category linked to the feminist criticism critique. This work is divided into two chapters. In the first one I present the theoretical framework, a brief history of fairy tales and comments about their film adaptations, from the panorama of the movie production of the nine Disney Princesses. In the second chapter, I highlight the methodology employed in the linguistic analysis and imagery from the movie "The Princess and the Frog" on the basis of what I call contextual nucleus which include the following elements: 1) time / space / family constitution, 2) economy / true love / happy ending, 3) scenario / songs / colors and traces 4) fantastic / wonderful / mysticism. I also suggest at this stage a study of Tyana´s physical and behavioral characteristics in comparison with the tale "The Frog Prince by the Grimm Brothers and, three of the "Disney Princesses": Snow White, Cinderella and Aurora. I believe that animation films and adaptations of traditional fairy tales that are directed to children, broadcast standards, values and meanings bring a great influence on the formation and construction of gender identities. Throughout the approach to cinematic language (verbal and imagery), it is possible to unveil the ideology that pervades this midia due to social interchange whereas it is an intertextual discoursive space / Esta dissertação tem por objetivo investigar de que modo ocorre a construção e a representação da personagem feminina no filme de animação A princesa e o sapo (2009), dos Estúdios Disney. Para realizar esse estudo, tomo como referencial teórico conceitos de distintas áreas do conhecimento, salientando-se os de gêneros do discurso, intertextualidade e polifonia, conforme Bakhtin e seu Círculo, além de enfocar as noções de estereótipo e de gênero, como categoria cultural, vinculados à crítica feminista. Este trabalho encontra-se dividido em dois capítulos. No primeiro, apresento o referencial teórico, um breve histórico dos contos de fadas e um comentário acerca de suas adaptações para o cinema, a partir do panorama da produção fílmica das nove princesas dos Estúdios Disney. No segundo capítulo, destaco a metodologia empregada na análise linguística e imagística do filme A princesa e o sapo com base no que denomino de núcleos contextuais , os quais compreendem os elementos seguintes: 1) tempo/espaço/constituição familiar; 2) economia/amor verdadeiro/happy end, 3) cenário fílmico/canções/cores e traços e 4) fantástico/maravilhoso/misticismo. Proponho ainda nessa etapa, um estudo das características físicas e comportamentais de Tiana, em termos comparativos com o conto O rei sapo , dos Irmãos Grimm e três das princesas Disney : Branca de Neve, Cinderela e Aurora. Acredito que os filmes de animação, adaptações de contos de fadas tradicionais, voltados para as crianças, transmitem normas, valores e significados, que influem diretamente na formação e construção de identidades de gênero. Por meio da abordagem à linguagem cinematográfica (verbal e imagística), foi possível desvelar a ideologia presente nesta mídia de intercâmbio social, enquanto espaço intertextual discursivo

Neogotická přestavba zámku Hluboká nad Vltavou / Neo-Gothic rebuilding of Castle Hluboká nad Vltavou

Diploma thesis "Neo-Gothic rebuilding of chateau Hluboká nad Vltavou" first provides a brief summary of basic literary and archival sources, followed by description of terminology in the field of 19th century architecture together with the explanation used by the author. After that there is mentioned a situation in Czech architecture at the end of 18th and in the 19th century. Next point is the Gothic Revival phenomenon - its establishment, ways of its spreading and its influence in middle Europe including Czech countries. Own topic of this thesis is introduced by a general and building history of chateau Hluboká nad Vltavou. After that there are introduced prince Jan Adolf II. of Schwarzenberg and his wife, who managed the rebuilding of the chateau. There is also a description of their personal contacts with British culture and architecture. Main part of the thesis is dedicated to Neo-Gothic rebuilding of chateau Hluboká nad Vltavou. This chapter is divided into several subchapters, where are described changes in the chateau interior and exterior including the effort of document the direct influence of Gothic Revival, and also the adaptation of the close surroundings of the chateau. “I didn’t have time to find the English words”: The Korean War’s Role in the Evolution of Bilingualism in the Canadian Armed Forces

This thesis explores the impact of the Korean War on the evolution of the role of the French language in the Canadian military between 1946 and 1954. It explains how the Korean War acted as both a catalyst for a more accommodating stance towards the French language in the Canadian Armed Forces, and an immediate impediment to the implementation of such changes. Particularly, this thesis explores the conflict that emerged between various officials in the Department of National Defence concerning the place that should be made for the French language, and how best to recruit more French Canadians. It shows that there was serious disagreement between the Minister of National Defence, Brooke Claxton, who wanted more bilingualism in the Canadian military, and the Chief of General Staff, General Guy G. Simonds, who resisted further concessions to francophones. Moreover, this thesis reveals the extent to which there was goodwill within the Canadian Armed Forces on the part of both anglophones and francophones on the frontline in Korea. This constituted the basis on which the Department of National Defence was able to begin the process of implementing a more bilingual system. In this respect, this thesis shows the Canadian military to have been ahead of the federal Civil Service.

Diadem och identitet : En studie kring identiteter i kejsarinnan Josephines pärl- och kamédiadem / Diadem and Identity : A Study on Identities in Empress Josephine's Pearl and Cameo Diadem

This paper, on the identities shown in one of the cameos in Empress Josephine’s pearl and cameo diadem, has first of all focused on the mythological characters, and thereafter raised the question if these are to be seen as an allegory for people from the time. The process of identi-fication has followed the three levels in Panofsky’s method for analysing art, where the first and second levels consist of already known material from the Bernadotte Library, Royal Palace in Stockholm and the jeweller house of Chaumet (former Nitot et Fils) in Paris.                      To decipher both the mythological individuals and the possible allegories, that is the third level, the iconology itself, the thoughts and methods of  Göran Hermerén on the rise and fall of allegories along with Leora Auslander’s solutions using visuals comparisons, when no written material is available, have provided the academic framework for the study.                                When comparing the cameo with pieces of art from the time, the subject fits the description of the Roman mythology’s love goddess Venus and her son Cupid, the lovechild fathered by Mars. Moving on to allegories, well-known material shows that Emperor Napoleon was keen to be portrayed as the god of war Mars and Empress Josephine as Venus.  A portrait of special interest to the study, a rather private painting by Parent from 1807, which is probably still unknown to most people, shows how Josephine is depicted with a recently deceased grandchild, a young boy how was also the nephew of Napoleon’s, a close relative to them both, and in the line of  succession to the throne, while Napoleon still was Emperor. This picture has an expression which is close to the one of Venus and Cupid, and it is also made to look like a cameo. These portraits were known at the time when Napoleon gave the diadem to Josephine in 1809.                                                       Among portraits from the Napoleonic era, there has earlier only been one known painting, even if in two examples, where the diadem is shown. It is a miniature of Empress Josephine, a work from her final period at Malmaison, 1814. However, another miniature picturing the daughter Hortense in the very same piece of jewellery, from 1812, has now become known. In both these examples, the depicted cameo has a hight measuring only millimetres, why a discussion on the execution and the rendering has to be done with restraint. But in the daughter´s portrait there is a certain attempt to show the outlines of the central cameo that differs from the later painting of the Empress. This may be an indication of how much more important it was for the daughter to relay the picture of her mother and the memory of her son, in 1812, than it was for Josephine in 1814, after the divorce, probably after the fall of Napoleon too, when she was no longer his Venus, and there was no longer a throne for any of her grandsons to inherit.         Therefore, in short, the chosen methods give the answer that the mythology depicted is a scene of Venus and her son Cupid, and the allegorical interpretation of Venus is the Empress herself. The child in shape of Cupid here, may well be read as one of her daughter’s sons, at the time a much longed-for heir to the throne of Napoleon I.

Im interested in the topic of praying machine, because I want to analyze aspects of photography and its functions. It's known, that the reality is manipulated by photography. Bud we can also say, that the relationship between reality and photography is neutral in fact, that the manipulation is made by our interpretation of photography. The change of the reality can be realized just in the dialog between photography and reality. Can it be, that the mechanization change into the will? Does it prays praying mill or the buddhistic monk, who rotates the mill? When he believes into it, is it enough? Or is it enough if believes who watch the monk with his mill? ... The computers from he place A are "praying" the prayers from the place B. With Tomáš Javůrek we collaborated with Vladimír Veselý and Radek Lát to create the Game for re-articulation our reality on the base of the revision of our faith.

The main purpose of this study of a pearl and cameo diadem, given by Napoleon to his first wife Josephine in 1809, is to follow its representation in portraiture from Paris in 1812 to Stockholm in 2010, and explore how the iconography develops during these 200 years. From the earlier years, the diadem is found only in miniatures, then after coming to the new royal family in Sweden, the Bernadottes, it is given a role of an heirloom representing history and families in grand paintings, arriving to the present well-known wedding hairpiece, covered by modern media, where the diadem is more of a crown than the open, forehead-covering piece of fashion jewellery it was during the Napoleonic era in France. The portraits from 1812, 1814, 1836, 1837, 1877, 1976, 2000/2003 and 2010 also portray a development of the female role model of its time. Just like the hair piece attains an iconography which comprises not only the highest dress codes but also a possibility of status transformation for the people involved in ceremony, the role of the country’s First Lady is about to change into a higher, more egalitarian position of present days.

As founder and director of the Youth Media Literacy Project and a self-titled Imagitator (one who agitates imagination), I have spent over 10 years teaching media literacy in various high schools, universities, and community centres across North America. This study will focus on my own personal practical knowledge (Connelly & Clandinin, 1982) as a culture jammer, educator and cancer survivor to illustrate my original vision of a ‘holistic media literacy pedagogy’. This research reflects on the emergence and impact of holistic media literacy in my personal and professional life and also draws from relevant interdisciplinary literature to challenge and synthesize current insights and theories of media literacy, holistic education and culture jamming.

Simple content analysis methods, such as the Bechdel test and measuring percentage of female talk time or characters, have seen a surge of attention from mainstream media and in social media the last couple of years. Underlying assumptions are generally shared with the gender role socialization model and consequently, an importance is stated, due to a high degree to which impressions from media shape in particular young children’s identification processes. For young girls, the Disney Princesses franchise (with Frozen included) stands out as the number one player commercially as well as in customer awareness. The vertical lineup of Disney princesses spans from the passive and domestic working Snow White in 1937 to independent and super-power wielding princess Elsa in 2013, which makes the line of films an optimal test subject in evaluating above-mentioned simple content analysis methods. As a control, a meta-study has been conducted on previous academic studies on the same range of films. The sampled research, within fields spanning from qualitative content analysis and semiotics to coded content analysis, all come to the same conclusions regarding the general changes over time in representations of female characters. The objective of this thesis is to answer whether or not there is a correlation between these changes and those indicated by the simple content analysis methods, i.e. whether or not the simple popular methods are in general coherence with the more intricate academic methods. / <p>Betyg VG (skala IG-VG)</p>
