Whispering Bodies : The Textual Brain

During this project I’ve been exploring how we can work with things within art to change our way of relating to ourselves, other humans and our surrounding. I want to see if finding inner spaces within us can make us feel more connected to our external surrounding. I want to share the feeling of being connected with things through incorporating them inside our own bodies. I have therefore been leading participants on introspective journeys where they found rooms inside of their bodies. After that I have been translating these inner spaces into immersive performative Scenography, where visitors have been invited to engage with the things in the space with all their senses. All the bodies, things as well as visitors, have been given the possibility to interact on their own terms. I wanted to see what kind of relating this room of Whispering Bodies; the Immersive Scenography inspired and invited to, and I wished for it to be a tactile bonding with a sense of heightened empathy and listening.  This text-based piece, called Whispering Bodies: The Textual Brain, is created out of a curiosity in how a reflection based in the written language can exist as a complementary work for a physical and tactile space, in this case Whispering Bodies: The Immersive Scenography. I wanted to create an experience that would have traces of the room filled with different bodies. I have been experimenting with how to use different mediums to make this happen, and this piece will be a combination of meditation, video, drawings, audio and text, and the text itself will be jumping in between genres. I want to invite you to take part in this journey with me. Källvatten Människan står inför en framtid då rent vatten blir allt mer sällsynt, samtidigt som många vittnar om en känsla av meningslöshet eller ett liv som känns andefattigt, två fenomen som jag tror korrelerar varandra. Mitt kandidatarbete har kommit att handla om människans förhållande till vatten. Om min egen oro för miljöföroreningarnas långtgående konsekvenser och hur vi genom en livsstil i konsumtionens tecken har förpassat vattnet till att bli en livsmedelsprodukt. Det handlar även om de människor som väljer annorlunda, om källan som gestalt i myterna och om hur vattenbärandet kan utgöra en protesthandling i ett högteknologiskt samhälle. Arbetet sträcker sig från iakttagelser av vad som kan anses vara en samtida källkult till ett gestaltande arbete genom konsthantverk. Gestaltningen presenteras som en installation av föremål utförda i silikon, is och metall. Därtill finns ett antal fotografiska bilder.

Sigrid Blomberg and the altarpiece in the church of Oskarshamn – a woman’s work of art, is an essay with the aim to describe, analyse and to discuss the gypsum altarpiece in the city church of Oskarshamn and its artist, the Swedish sculptor Sigrid Blomberg.  The essay begins with a brief historical description of the situation for female artists in Sweden at the turn of the 20th century and a comment on the material chosen for the altarpiece – gypsum. This is followed by a short summary of the life of Sigrid Blomberg and two other examples of her work to illustrate and discuss similarities with the altarpiece in the church of Oskarshamn.  This is followed by a description of the church and its interior, as well as the altarpiece’s history, creation process and problems. The essay then focuses on an analysis of the different parts, as well as the whole, of the altarpiece – characters, meanings and interpretations. The essay ends in a discussion of the findings and the author’s conclusions regarding the altarpiece and the artist’s place in the art history. Central in the essay is the apparent lack of female artists in the art canon and the reasons and effect due to this.  The author uses a semiotic method and a feminist theory premiss to find the answers to questions such as: why was a female artist chosen for the assignment; how does the artwork compare to other, equivalent and contemporary artworks; how may the placing of the work have effected the perception of the altarpiece; have the perception changed over time; and finally what’s characteristic for the artist Sigrid Blombergs idiom?

Marken är något fundamentalt. Jag dras till att skapa hålrum och att gjuta av dem. Låta händerna leda. Det är något som attraherar mig med att inte riktigt kunna föreställa mig formen av hålrummet i tanken, att det är ett glapp i överföringen mellan händernas rörelser och tankens. Att värdera det definierade högre än det odefinierade, vill jag lägga i en parantes.  Vi använder språk som materia, vi bygger betydelser, rum som skapar sammanhang, stödkonstruktioner, konstruktion som är dikt, som är en rörelse som är jord som är ett arbete som är sten som är en förflyttning som är trä som är en handling som är metall som är nära intill, att skulptera en tanke. Det är idén om att kroppen har en korrekt form som gör kroppen korrupt. Den brutna cirkeln är på ett sätt en helhet av två korrupta kroppar. Kategorier och definitioner är något verkligt, oavsett hur de är skapade eller kommit till. Vi uppmärksammar genast om något är konstigt. Två enheter som vi uppfattar som separata, är separata. Om de inte varit separata skulle vi uppfattat de som ett och inte som två. Det här ser vi omedelbart. Om vi inte är i ett främmande sammanhang med främmande definitioner, men då kommer säkerligen någon ganska snart att uppmärksamma oss på hur saker hänger ihop. Människor är hjälpsamma på sådant sätt. / My work may be described as bordering between sculpture and installation, intuitive and conceptual, it could in a way be seen as a broken circle, as one, but i will work hard to make the two entities, the two seemingly half circle shaped entities, to be separate, to be two.  I will assert they are one work but also not, I will assert their indepencence, they are two. The bridge, the connection, will (or will not) happen in the thought, not by sight. There will be no side-by-side, object dialog in near space, rather association through memory and through distance. Like an object or some kind of occurence is planted early on in a movie and then reoccurs later on with the purpuse to further the understanding of course of events.  We tend to read two half circles near each other as a whole circle. Robert Morris made two half circles with only a thin lit gap underlining their distinct form, but at the same time dissolving them as a broken circle. It is the idea of of a correct body that makes a body corrupt. The broken circle is in a way the whole of two corrupt bodies.

Within this text, I will discuss my process of making sculptures through my examining MA soloshow. It is a deeply personal reflection of my ideas and where they originate from, symbolsand what they speak of, materials and techniques they require. The theme of my sculptures ischildhood and memories, what I lost when growing up, and who I became. There is also astrong theme of craftsmanship in my work and, in this text, an exploration of materials andthe knowledge of my working hands. In this essay, I present four sculptures within thechapters THE BRAID, THE ROPE, THE MITTEN, and THE WELL. It aims to give the reader aninsight into my artistic process when creating my MA exam work.

Frühstück im Freien / Freiräume im offiziellen Kunstbetrieb der DDR. Die Ausstellungen und Aktionen im Leonhardi-Museum in Dresden 1963 - 1990

Das Leonhardi-Museum in Dresden gehörte in der DDR zu den legendären Ausstellungsorten für zeitgenössische, nonkonforme Kunst. Seine Besonderheit bestand darin, daß die Konzeption und Organisation der Ausstellungen in den Händen der Künstler selbst lag - die sich dafür immer wieder in einer offenen Formation, einer Arbeitsgruppe (AG) zusammenschlossen -, und daß es kein inoffizieller oder autonomer Ort war, sondern zunächst eine Galerie des staatlichen Künstlerverbandes VBK und später des Stadtbezirkes Dresden Ost. In der vorliegenden Dissertation konnten von 1963 bis 1990 über 100 Ausstellungen und Aktionen im großen Saal des Leonhardi-Museums nachgewiesen und dokumentiert werden: In der Mehrzahl Personal-Ausstellungen von Graphikern, Malern und Bildhauern, die Haltungen provozierten, Sehgewohnheiten erweiterten und sich von der Dimension des Raumes zu Experimenten anregen ließen. Nicht selten war es für sie die erste Gelegenheit, überhaupt auszustellen. Kanonbildend waren vor allem die gemeinsamen Feste und die spektakulären Gruppenausstellungen zu den Themen „Türen“ (1979) und „Frühstück im Freien“ (1982), welche das Leonhardi-Museum auch über die Stadt- und Staatsgrenze hinaus bekannt machten. Ferner trugen die durch das Ministerium für Staatssicherheit veranlassten Verbote und Schließungen zur Popularität des Hauses bei. Im Vergleich mit anderen offiziellen Ausstellungsorten in Berlin (Kunstkabinett von Lothar Lang, Galerie Arkade), Leipzig (Galerie am Sachsenplatz, Herbstsalon), Karl-Marx-Stadt (Galerie Clara Mosch) und Dresden (u.a. die Galerien Kunst der Zeit, Nord, Comenius und Mitte; Puschkinhaus, Lücke frequentor, Intermedia) konnte gezeigt werden, daß sich die Bedeutung des Leonhardi-Museums veränderte, es aber der einzige Ausstellungsort in der DDR war, an dem es Künstlern über drei Jahrzehnte gelungen ist, offizielle Strukturen (aus-) zu nutzen, um in produktiver Eigenständigkeit einen Freiraum für bildende Kunst zu schaffen. / The Leonhardi-Museum in Dresden belonged to one of the most legendary exhibition centers / galleries for contemporary nonconformist art in the GDR. Its peculiarity was derived from the fact that the concept and organization of the exhibitions lay in the hands of the artists themselves – who continually formed open ad hoc working groups (Arbeitsgruppe / AG) – as well as the fact that it was not an unofficial or autonomous institution, but primarily a gallery belonging to the State Association of Artists in the Graphic Arts in the GDR (VBK) and later to the city council Dresden-East. This dissertation examines and documents more than 100 exhibitions and events held in the principal hall of the Leonhardi-Museum between 1963 and 1990. The majority were personal exhibitions by graphic artists, painters and sculptors which provoked attitudes and opinions, broadened viewing habits and which featured experiments which were stimulated by the dimensions of the room. Often it was the first opportunity at all for artists to exhibit. Especially the communal festivities and spectacular group exhibitions around the topics “doors” and “Alfresco Breakfast” made the Leonhardi-Museum famous both nationally and internationally. Ministry of “Staatssicherheit” bans contributed to the increased popularity of the Leonhardi-Museum. Comparisons with similar official exhibition venues in Berlin (Lothar Lang’s Art-Cabinet, Gallery Arkade), Leipzig (Gallery on the Sachsenplatz, Herbstsalon), Karl-Marx-Stadt (Gallery Clara Mosch) and Dresden (Galleries Kunst der Zeit, Nord, Comenius and Mitte; Puschkinhaus, Lücke frequentor, Intermedia) demonstrate that the importance of the Leonhardi-Museum changed, but that for three decades it remained the only place in the GDR in which artists were able to use official structures for their art. In doing so they created scope for freedom for the graphic arts.

I denna text vill jag, som undertiteln skvallrar, prata om att passa in i samhället eller hitta hem utanför. Arbetet har den enkla strukturen att det börjar med att prata om hinder man kan ha för att ”passa in”, såsom att inte klara prestations-pressen man känner från en osynlig makt, eller helt enkelt av att bryta från normen (här med fokus på att vara bög eller queer). Vidare via min och andras historier kring att ha sitt psyke eller sina känslor som en grundläggande parameter i sitt konstnärskap, och går sen avslutningsvis ut i några andra alternativa vägar att hitta hem utanför; drag och frivillig enkelhet.  Varsågod. / Dinosaurs, dragons, weapons, spaceships, aliens, fire, monsters, dangerous animals. Never interested me. That's why they interest me. Through intuitive sculpting, stories about my traumas, lusts and needs are formed, and about the society they exist in. I can see a tension towards the boy I never was/the man I never became, and a longing after to now approach him om my own terms. The sculptures are crooked, weak, broken, naive and weird, and in this becomes a vital space where that is allowed. The pieces are standing with the underdogs. In a movement upwards.​

Lineage Portraiture in Tibetan Buddhist Art

Im Fokus dieser Studie stehen mehrere Gruppen von tragbaren Skulpturen unterschiedlicher Größe und aus unterschiedlichem Material gefertigt (Bronze bzw. Papiermaché), die eine bestimmte Überlieferungslinie von Lehrern der Lamdre-Tradition darstellen. Lamdre („Der Weg und das Resultat“) bildet das zentrale religiöse Lehrsystem der Sakya-Schule des tibetischen Buddhismus und ihrer wichtigsten Zweigschule, der Ngor-Schule. Diese wenig bekannten oder weitgehend unerforschten Skulpturen und Skulpturengruppen befinden sich in der Sammlung des Klosters Namgyal in Mustang (Nepal), dem ehemaligen Königreich von Lowo (Glo bo), an der Grenze zu Tibet gelegen. Sie stammen aus dem späten 15. bis frühen 16. Jahrhundert, einer höchst innovativen Phase buddhistischer Kunstproduktion in Tibet und dem Himalaya, in der sich regionale Stile entwickelten und neue künstlerische Gestaltungsformen erprobt wurden, einschließlich verschiedener Arten des Porträts. Hierzu zählen idealisierte, typisierte, und gelegentlich hoch-expressive, Darstellungen von Lehrern innerhalb einer Überlieferungslinie ebenso wie individualisierte, realistische Einzelporträts von bedeutenden buddhistischen Meistern, die offensichtlich nach dem lebenden Modell geschaffen wurden. Basierend auf einer vergleichenden kunsthistorischen Analyse zeigt die Arbeit, dass der Repräsentation der Überlieferungslinie als Ganzes eine höhere Stellung beigemessen wurde als der Schaffung von Ähnlichkeit mit den einzelnen Figuren innerhalb einer Skulpturengruppe. Die Bildwerke reflektieren außerdem die religiösen, historischen und künstlerischen Verbindungen zwischen Mustang und angrenzenden Königreichen in West-Tibet, der Provinz Tsang und dem Kathmandu-Tal. Sie zeigen, dass die lokalen Klöster auf ein etabliertes Netzwerk von buddhistischen Klostergemeinschaften, machtvollen und wohlhabenden Stiftern und künstlerischen Traditionen aufbauen konnten, und dass sich die Region als ein Zentrum skulpturaler Produktion von höchster Qualität und Innovation etablierte. / This two-volume dissertation on lineage portraiture in Tibetan Buddhist art investigates in its core a body of portable sculpture preserved in a monastery in Mustang, Nepal. Most of these sculptures were originally part of sets documenting the person-to-person transmission of the most important teaching of the Ngor tradition, the Lamdre or “Path with the Result.” The Ngor tradition is a sub-tradition of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism to which this teaching traces back. Accordingly, most Sakyapa and Ngorpa monasteries may have had one or more Lamdre lineage sets in painting and/or sculpture. The focus of the study is on the iconographic and overall visual conceptions of different sets representing the same teacher lineage produced for or within the same regional context (Mustang in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries). A comparative analysis of the different sets shows that depicting the lineage teachers as a collective entity was deemed more important than creating physical likenesses of the individual teachers. This is reflected in the variation of the depiction of individual teachers from one set to another in terms of facial features, hand gestures, and even the type of practice a teacher may be associated with. The study also considers the emergence and evolution of teacher lineages within the Sakya school, introducing lineage representations on monumental backrest arches in repoussé work at the Sakya Lhakhang Chenmo in south-western Tibet. It also discusses teacher portraits produced outside the Lamdre lineage to reflect on questions of individuality, realism and likeness in Tibetan portraiture. A special focus is on portraits of two princely monks from the ruling house of Mustang, Lowo Khenchen and Lodrö Gyaltsen Pelzangpo. Overall, the lineage depictions and individual portraits are analyzed in relation to art history research on portraiture, Tibetan religious and political history, as well as their religious significance and ritual use.
